Chapter 1

1

On the day Austin Jones regained his feet, a celebration was held for him.

Sophia Brown was also there.

They laughed and cheered, raising their glasses in celebration.

And I hid in a corner on the second floor, silently watching it all, because no one had invited me to the party.

"Austin, you don't know how much Sophia cares about you. She bought the earliest flight back as soon as she heard you were better to let you see her as soon as possible.

"She's so worried about you, don't you think you should show your appreciation?"

Sophia blushed and looked shy.

Austin pulled out a ring and knelt down in front of everyone.

"Sophia, will you be my girlfriend?"

Sophia covered her mouth in surprise and tearfully nodded.

The ring slowly slipped onto her finger, and everyone cheered and congratulated them who embraced each other.

I covered my chest and sighed quietly.

I couldn't bear to watch anymore.

I asked the system if my mission had failed.

The system was silent for a moment, then suddenly swore, "This idiot must be crazy!

"It was you who devoted yourself to taking care of him, and he not only didn't thank you but confessed to your enemy. How disgusting!

"Come on, let's try again. This time, let's target someone else and let him suffer!"

I was surprised. "Can I really start over?"

The system's voice sounded mischievous. "This is me taking advantage of my position secretly. Don't tell anyone, okay?"

I was speechless.

Who else could I tell, anyway?

So I happily accepted the system's suggestion and started over.

2

My original task was to charm Austin and make him fall in love with me.

Only in this way could I continue to live.

It was not easy, after all, as we had a big gap in status. He was born into a wealthy family, while I was just an ordinary person supported by his family.

So, in the early stages, my task hardly had any progress until the unexpected incident occurred.

Austin's leg was injured.

That was when I got the chance to approach him, take care of him, and put up with his bad temper.

I spent three years warming his heart little by little until he couldn't live without me.

Of course, that was all in my imagination.

It turned out that he had always looked down on me, even though I worked hard and had no complaints. He never even looked at me in the eyes.

And even after knowing how Sophia had treated me, he still wanted to be with her.

The power of his dreaming girl was truly extraordinary.

Since this path was not workable, I decided to take a different one.

This time, the target was Ryan Miller.

When I heard this news, I was silent for a long time.

I don't know if it was intentional, but Ryan and Austin were sworn enemies. Ryan would have loved to see Austin die on the spot.

When Austin's leg was injured, Ryan was the happiest.

I heard that he celebrated at a nightclub for three days and nights, and the entire bill was paid by him.

When Austin learned about this, he was so angry that he smashed everything in the room.

I tried to protect him from hurting himself, but in the end, I got hurt myself...

The past is too painful to recall.

Shaking my head, I let out a long sigh.

Since I can't avoid it, I might as well face it with a calm attitude.

According to the system's instructions, I was going to meet Ryan.

To win him over, I had to at least get him to know me.

When I was about to leave, Austin stopped me.

"What are you going to do so late at night?"

Looking at Austin in front of me, I bit my lips tightly and felt a mix of emotions.

My family was poor but I excelled in my studies, and I was fortunate to be one of the students sponsored by the Jones group.

Later, my parents passed away for some reason, and Mrs. Jones felt sorry for my lonely background and brought me back, giving me a place to stay.

But I knew that there was no such thing as a free lunch in the world, and I couldn't accept others' kindness easily.

So even though I lived in the Jones household, I didn't get carried away, instead, I did what I could and never dined with them. I always ate with the servants.

I defined my position as a "laborer".

This was also the reason why Austin always looked down on me.

He looked down on my identity and thought I wasn't worthy.

But before, he never cared about where I went, and now...

I held back my confusion and spoke in a casual tone, "Something came up."

Without waiting for his reaction, I walked past him and left.

I found Ryan at a nightclub.

People around were gathered in groups, having a great time.

But he was alone in the middle of them, filled with loneliness.

I took a deep breath and walked up to him.

"Ryan."

Hearing my voice, he lazily raised his eyes and glanced at me.

Suddenly, he laughed and said, "Isn't this Austin's little sidekick? Why are you here, regretting following him?"

His words were filled with sarcasm.

I was not angry.

Actually, I had come into contact with Ryan several times in my previous life.

He looked at me, always with a look that seemed to say more than words could express.

He had also asked me, "Are you stupid, insisting on chasing after him? What's so great about him?

"You'll regret it sooner or later!"

4

I never expected that my words would come true, and I really do regret it.

"Yes, I regret it now, so I've decided to turn over a new leaf."

Hearing my words, Ryan was taken aback. What I said must be beyond his expectations.

I faced him calmly, not flinching or backing away.

After a long time, he suddenly smiled.

"Since so, shouldn't you show your sincerity?"

He pointed to the wine in front of me.

My hand hanging by my side clenched into a fist.

The impoverished life I led had left me with a severe stomachache.

I never dared to touch cold or spicy food, let alone drink a drop of alcohol.

I was afraid of getting sick, and more afraid of not being able to afford medical treatment.

But now...

Biting my teeth, I picked up a glass of wine and looked determinedly into the air. "I'll drink this first to show my sincerity!"

I raised my head and drank the entire glass of fiery liquor.

Instantly, my throat felt like a wildfire was raging, burning painfully.

The pain spread from the top down, reaching my stomach.

Immediately, I turned pale with pain and slowly crouched down, clutching my stomach.

People around me were egging me on, "How can you crouch down after just one glass? Are you okay?"

"That's not very sincere, is it?"

"If that's your best effort, you might as well forget about getting Ryan's favor."

Strangely, they were right beside me, but I couldn't hear a word they were saying.

The whole world seemed to be spinning.

The pain numbed my consciousness, and I finally couldn't hold on anymore. I closed my eyes and collapsed to the ground.

In the last moment of my fading consciousness, I seemed to hear someone rushing towards me in a panic.

"Amelia!"

5

When I woke up, all I saw was pure white.

I muttered to myself, "Is this what death feels like?"

Just as I finished speaking, a melancholy voice came from beside me, "Dream on."

I turned around and found Ryan with a frown on his face.

He asked me seriously, "Amelia, did Austin send you here?"

I didn't understand what he meant.

"Did he send you here to feign friendship with me, lower my guard, and then surprise me by killing yourself in front of me, leaving me with a big problem that I can never get out of?"

I was speechless.

"Your silence means you agree!"

Seeing my silence, Ryan immediately sprang up like his tail had been stepped on.

He stood up with a 'whoosh' and paced back and forth in the ward with his face turning black.

His spinning made my head dizzy.

Finally, he stopped and rushed to my face.

I thought he was about to explode, so I was ready to explain.

But he took the lead. "Amelia, are you stupid? Did Austin save your life or see you killing someone, and you just follow him blindly?

"Can't you be more sober? What's so good about that weakling that you're willing to sacrifice so much for him?"

As he spoke, he muttered, "Or is it because you've seen too little of the world and got fooled by such a thing."

I couldn't react to his words.

I had known him to be arrogant and egotistical, but I had no idea that he was also a comedian in private, with an imagination that was out of this world.

However, it was clear that Austin meant nothing to him.

I couldn't help but laugh out loud, only to be scolded by Ryan with a glare. "Do you think I'm joking?"

"I didn't mean it that way," I said, shaking my head and trying to sit up.

But I had no strength in my body.

Ryan hummed softly and condescendingly offered to help me up.

I thanked him quietly.

"I didn't come to find you because of Austin. I have nothing to do with him, never have, never will."

Ryan stared at my eyes without speaking, as if to verify the truth.

I calmly let him scrutinize me.

After a moment, he pursed his lips and still looked arrogant. "I guess I didn't make a mistake in judging you. You're a smart person. Since now, you can follow me from now on. I won't let you suffer."

I was surprised, he was accepting me so easily?

"Don't you fear...?"

"Fear what?"

Ryan looked at me, smirking. "You said you had nothing to do with Austin, didn't you?"

I subconsciously nodded, then I realized his meaning and smiled knowingly.

Chapter 3

6

My stomach problem was not serious and I was discharged from the hospital soon after waking up.

Ryan was very dedicated and personally drove me back.

He said with a smile, "My person cannot lack in grandeur!"

Looking at the flashy sports car parked outside the hospital, I was speechless.

Then, when the car crawled along the road at a speed of 30 miles per hour, I was even more speechless.

I quietly asked the system, "He must be very poor, right? He can't even afford to put gas in his sports car."

The system said nothing.

Although it didn't say anything, I felt like it rolled its eyes at me.

If we went on like this, I didn't know when we would arrive.

I thought for a moment and pulled out my phone. "Let's exchange WhatsApp."

Ryan looked at me and casually threw his phone at me, "The password is 0731. Do it yourself."

I was surprised that he told me the password so easily.

And this number...

"Oh, what a coincidence! My birthday is also on July 31st."

Ryan didn't respond.

I felt a bit embarrassed and quickly lowered my head to fiddle with his phone.

After adding him as a friend, I transferred him 100 dollars.

My move caught his attention. "What are you doing?"

"Thank you for driving me back. I have transferred some money for gas. You don't have to be stingy with it. If it's not enough, I'll top it up for you... Ah!"

Before I could finish speaking, Ryan suddenly slammed on the brakes.

Fortunately, the seatbelt held me back, otherwise I would have probably flown out of the car.

Gasping for breath with a look of shock, I heard Ryan's teeth clenching as he said, "Amelia, you really are..."

I subconsciously turned my head to look at him and saw that his face was dark. I felt very nervous in my heart. "I'm sorry. Did I do something wrong to make you unhappy?"

Just after I said that, Ryan, who had a stern face a second ago, suddenly became at a loss.

Stuttering for a while, he finally managed to say, "Nothing."

When he restarted the car, I noticed that it was definitely faster.

I knew that money really does move mountains!

But thinking about my own savings, I couldn't help but sigh.

It seemed I had to find another part-time job.

7

When I returned to the Jones family, I ran into Austin again, as expected.

His face looked rather pale.

I nodded to him and was about to go back to my room when he suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"Did you see Ryan last night?

"You know how I feel about him, yet you still went to see him.

"Amelia, are you crazy!"

His temper came out of nowhere.

I frowned and tried to shake off his hand, but failed.

Taking a deep breath, I looked at him calmly, "Whatever conflicts you have with him, that's your business. It has nothing to do with me.

"The same goes for what's between us, it's none of your business to meddle.

"Austin, you've crossed the line."

Upon hearing that, Austin looked as if he had been hit by something, his face turning pale instantly.

He mumbled something and hesitated before he finally spoke.

Just then, a footstep sound was heard.

I glanced to the side and saw Mrs. Jones.

She was standing in the corner, her eyes slowly moving down from our faces to our intertwined hands.

Her eyes narrowed.

My heart tightened at that moment.

"Amelia, come to the study with me."

"Okay."

I nodded and reminded Austin in a low voice, "Let go of me."
