It happened overnight. A job label suddenly appeared on everyone's forehead.
My wife was [Cleaner], while her first love, the man she had always pined for, was [Unemployed].
She hugged my leg and begged me pitifully, "Honey, your label is [Emperor]! That's a useless label in this modern era. Please give it to him so that he can revive his career by using the fate of the chosen one."
Before I could answer her, her first love and her knocked me unconscious and pointed an ancient bronze mirror at my forehead while chanting a spell.
The golden label of [Emperor] left my forehead. It was an excruciating pain that felt like my soul was being torn apart, and I almost passed out. The label ended up being branded on the forehead of her first love.
They celebrated wildly when it appeared on his head.
As I opened my eyes slowly, I was filled with pity for them.
They had no idea that the full label was [The Last Emperor].
Mona Lewin helped me up from the cold floorboards. Tears were streaming down her face, but the look in her eyes was bright. She was staring at the man next to her, whose forehead had a shiny, golden word on it… [Emperor]
"I'm sorry, Cole… I'm so sorry… But Sean can't be an [Unemployed] forever. He is talented, and he deserves the best!"
Sean stood by her side, admiring the new label on his forehead in the mirror. He tidied his collar, and his chin lifted slightly as he seemed to emanate a natural air of arrogance. He turned to look at me and said in a deep voice with a fake tinge of pity, "Don't worry, Cole. I'll take good care of Mona on your behalf from now onward."
He seemed to have forgotten that he was the one who had his knee on my chest a minute ago, while Mona, who was my wife, gagged me with a towel so that I could not call for help. They had no idea that I had exhausted all ideas trying to get rid of the curse of [The Last Emperor] for several lifetimes, and now, my wish had come true.
After suffering through intense pain, I felt relief that I had never experienced before. A gray label appeared on my forehead, [Loafer]. Mona looked at the new label on my forehead, and she was instantly filled with guilt. "Honey…" Her voice was soft, and she choked back a sob.
"I know this isn't fair to you… If you need anything in the future, Sean and I… We'll make sure to give it to you as compensation…."
My voice was as calm as dead water when I told her my demand. "I want five hundred thousand."
The room became silent instantly.
Mona's guilt froze on her face, and she looked at me in disbelief, as if I shouldn't have made such a crude request. "Cole, why would you…"
Sean interrupted her. He came up to me and looked down at me with an air of superiority, as if I were a dog begging for food. He took out a stack of cash from his wallet and threw it in my face. "Five hundred thousand? Now that you're a [Loafer], you've become pretty thick-skinned."
He burst out with laughter. "Take this. It's two thousand. Get out and buy me a proper suit. After that, take my Salvatore Ferragamo leather shoes for maintenance. I'm an [Emperor] now. I can't be wearing cheap clothing."
Sean paused before continuing condescendingly, yet matter-of-factly, "You can work as my assistant and driver from now on. I can't let a [Loafer] like you die on the streets. It will only make Mona sad."
Mona nodded vigorously, and the guilt in her eyes vanished. It was replaced with a proud look of 'just look at how great he is to you'. "He's right, Honey. Sean's status is different now. You won't stand to lose anything if you stick with him. You're just a [Loafer]. You won't be able to find a good job with that label."
I looked at them chattering away like they had practiced this speech. They sounded pretentious and were pretty long-winded, but all I did to respond was quietly pick up the money from the floor.
Sean's label as [Emperor] came into effect almost immediately. He received a call the next day from a rich heir to invite him to attend a private party he had been trying his hardest to get invited to.
"Did you see that? That's fate!" Sean paced back and forth excitedly in the living room after taking the cool. The label [Emperor] on his forehead seemed to become even brighter.
Mona looked at him with admiration, as if he were a God. "I knew it! I've always known that you were meant for great things!"
Sean enjoyed her adulation while looking at me like he was pitying me. "Get the car, Cole. You're coming with me tonight." He gave the tie, which came with the expensive suit I purchased for him, a tug. "Wait for me at the door later, don't follow me inside. It would be embarrassing for a [Loafer] to appear at such an event.
"You'll just stick out like a sore thumb and spoil my luck."
Mona agreed, "Sean's right, Honey. You should just stay outside. You won't be able to handle all those renowned personalities in there. Sean and I will pack some good food for you once the event is over."
She spoke as if cajoling a naughty child, but I nodded stoically.
The car was parked at the doors of the glamorous club, and Sean and Mona held each other's arms as they entered the party with flair.
I sat inside the car as I watched them enter the club like two moths flying into fire. The first curse of [The Last Emperor] was that one would rise as quickly as they fell. Fate would give him numerous windfalls before pushing him into a never-ending abyss of misery.
After waiting for about two hours, Sean called me on the phone. He could not suppress the joy in his voice, and he sounded slightly drunk. "Get in here, Cole! I'm rich, damn it!"
I entered the club, and a waiter led me to a private room filled with cigar smoke. Sean was sitting at a huge card table with a bright look. The [Emperor] label on his forehead glittered under the crystal lights, making him look like he was enveloped in a dreamy reflection.
A small mountain of chips was stacked in front of him, while Mona stood behind him, her face red from excitement as she massaged his shoulders. Opposite Sean was a middle-aged man with the label [Tycoon] on his forehead. He looked green in the face, and his forehead was covered in cold sweat.
"Looks like this is my lucky night, Mr. Wagner." Sean smiled as he flung the last card onto the table. "I win."
The [Tycoon], Mr. Wagner, stared at the label [Emperor] on Sean's head with fear in his eyes, but he let out a long sigh at the end and stood up. "Good game, Mr. Chetman. I'll transfer the 30 million to you first thing tomorrow morning."
Sean laughed as he stood up to pat John Wagner on the shoulder. "You're much too kind, Mr. Wagner. I still need a lot of your help in the future." He was acting as if John were his subordinate.
John said nothing. He had a dark look on his face when he left with his men.
Everyone else in the private room crowded around Sean as they showered him with flattery.
"You're a man destined for great things, Mr. Chetman!"
"The [Emperor] fate is amazing!"
"We'll be depending on you for our livelihood, Mr. Chetman!"
Sean was on cloud nine as he enjoyed the attention. He drunkenly hugged Mona and glanced across the crowd, and his gaze stopped at me. He pointed at me and announced to everyone, "Let me introduce this man to all of you. That's my driver, Cole Fuller."
He paused and suddenly laughed bad-naturedly, "He used to be an [Emperor] too!"
Everyone turned silent as they looked up at my gray [Loafer] label. After that, everyone burst out laughing.
"Huh? Him? The [Loafer]?"
"You're such a joker, Mr. Chetman!"
"Is his [Emperor] label still asleep? This is such a joke!"
Mona stood next to Sean as she watched me being made fun of by everyone. She did not sympathize with me at all, but looked proud of Sean, as if my embarrassment had proven that she had made the 'right' choice.
Sean was very happy with the results. He came up to me and patted my face with the chip in his hand. It was deeply humiliating. "Do you see this, Cole? This is what an [Emperor] should be like. As for you…" He leaned in close to my ear and said in a low voice that only both of us could hear, "You're only good enough to be a dog."
I watched him gloat while intoxicated and said calmly. "Mr. Wagner's label is [Tycoon], but the quiet young man standing next to him has the label [Grand Master]. You won that round of cards because it's a trap set for you."
Sean's smile froze.
"What the hell are you talking about?!" Sean sobered up as he grabbed me by the collar and pushed me up against the wall. The [Emperor] label on his forehead lit up violently from his anger. "You're just a [Loafer]! What do you know about playing cards? You're just jealous that I'm doing better than you!"
Sean looked savage as his saliva sprayed onto my face. "I'm warning you, Cole Fuller! Say nonsense like that to mess with my mind again, and I'll f*cking kill you!"
Mona came running to me as well. She punched me in the chest as her eyes reddened. "How can you be so malicious, Cole? How can you curse him right after he won money?!" Her shrill voice was filled with disappointment and anger. "You disgust me! You're just a petty, little man who can't stand others being better than you!"
The guests around us started to criticize me as well.
"Who's that guy? Is he a jinx?"
"Don't be mad, Mr. Chetman. There's no need to argue with a [Loafer]."
"Get him out of here right now! He's bad luck!"
Sean pushed me out of the private room as everyone else behind me continued partying while staring at me with disdain. I stood at the end of the corridor and stared at the city's night view from the window, feeling nothing inside me.
The second curse to [The Last Emperor] was becoming headstrong and refusing to accept advice, which caused one to end up close to backstabbers and push loyal and wise people away.
Every difficult truth would sound like a vile curse to Sean, while every honey-dripping lie would be music to his ears. He was walking on a path covered with fresh, beautiful flowers, but he would end up falling off the cliff at the end of the path.
The next day, he received 30 million in his account.
Sean used the money to register an investment company right away, and he named it 'Imperial Capital'. He rented the most expensive office in the city center and bought himself a brand-new Rolls-Royce.
Mona resigned from her cleaning job, which paid 3000 per month, and became the 'CEO's wife'. They moved into a bungalow at the top of the hill, while I was given a room in the servants' quarters next to the garage.
It took only one week for Sean's life to hit great heights. Many heard about his [Emperor] fate, and they came looking for him with money and potential projects, begging him to invest in their businesses. Before his company had even officially launched, his net worth had been estimated to be 500 million.
Sean went crazy after that. He held lavish parties in his villa with guests from every echelon of the upper social circle and a bevy of beauties.
Mona was all smiles, dressed in an expensive gown as she went from guest to guest like the hostess of the party. As for me, I continued being the driver dressed in a cheap uniform.
One night, Sean held another lavish party. This time, Mona's parents, my former in-laws, attended the party as well. They used to treat me well, praising me for planting my feet on the ground and being honest with my ways. They used to say that I was worth trusting Mona with.
However, they looked extremely upset when they saw the [Emperor] label on Sean's forehead, and the [Loafer] label on mine.
"You've finally made the right choice!" My former mother-in-law held Mona's hand as she looked agitatedly at Sean. "This is a match made in heaven! An [Emperor]! Oh my gosh. We have a noble in our family!"
My father-in-law walked up to me stoically, looking upset at what I had become. "How did you end up this way, Cole? How can a man be a [Loafer] and still be thick-skinned enough to stay here? If it wasn't for Mona's sake, Mr. Chetman would have kicked you out of here long ago!"
I lowered my head and said nothing.
Sean held Mona in his arms and came over to us, looking gleeful. He said to Mona's parents, "Mom, Dad, you don't need to worry about Mona. I'll take good care of her and give her a good life." He pointed at me and said nonchalantly, "As for Cole, he had been with Mona before, after all. I've gotten him a job as a driver, and I like to think I've already done my best for him."
Mona's parents looked grateful.
"You have a kind heart, Mr. Chetman!"
"Mona is so lucky to be with you!"
While Mona's parents were busy criticizing me, she leaned into Sean's arms and seemed to enjoy my humiliation. She loved how it felt to kick me to the ground, as it proved that she had made the right choice.
The party came to a climax when Sean got dead drunk and stood next to the swimming pool to announce some big news to all the guests. "Everyone! I've decided to buy over John Wagner's Baton Corporation!"
His announcement caused a commotion at the party.
John, the [Tycoon], owned Baton Corporation, one of the leading businesses in the city with a net worth of billions.
Everyone thought Sean had gone crazy.
"Mr. Chetman, isn't this going a little too far?"
"Yeah. Baton Corporation is a huge company…"
Sean waved his hand with great authority and the air of an emperor. "What's there to be afraid of?!" He roared. "I'm the [Emperor]! Fate is on my side! A mere [Tycoon] is nothing but a rock under my foot. I'll get him to submit himself to me in three days!"
Someone shouted from the crowd, "Long live Sean Chetman!"
This was followed by tremendous cheering that echoed in the air.
Sean's regal-like confidence got everyone excited, and it truly felt like the rise of an emperor. Mona was so touched by what was happening that tears streamed down her face. She hugged Sean's arm, and she looked at him with stars in her eyes.
I was the only one who saw the young man with the label [Grand Master] on his forehead, standing in the corner with a cold smirk on his face.
