Chapter 2

ADELAIDE HUGHES POV:

My fingers, scraped raw by the rough stone, left faint bloody smears that quickly dried in the cold night wind. The drug surged again, making every movement an agony, a tearing of muscle and will.

A shriek echoed from my room above. "She's gone! The little bitch escaped through the window!" It was Mrs. Gable.

Immediately, the chaotic thud of guards' boots and the dancing light of torches filled the courtyard below. They were starting the search. I had to be faster.

I quickened my descent. A loose stone crumbled under my foot, clattering down into the darkness below. My heart seized. I froze, pressing my body flat against the wall, holding my breath.

The torchlight swept past my position, moving toward the forest. A small mercy. They assumed I would run for the woods, not toward this place of death.

My feet finally touched the ground. My legs buckled, and I nearly collapsed. The air in the North Wing was thick with the smell of dust and decay, but underneath it, there was something else—a faint, crisp scent like a winter forest, cold and clean.

Before me stood a massive oak door, shrouded in dust and creeping ivy. The door knocker was a snarling wolf's head, its empty eyes seeming to stare right through me.

This was the lair of the "Ancient One."

I knew there was no turning back. The shouts of the guards were getting closer, and among them, I heard a voice I despised more than any other—Eleanor Serrano, the matriarch of this wretched family.

"Find her! Dead or alive!" Her shrill command cut through the night, dripping with venom.

I took a deep breath, raised a trembling hand, and knocked. The sound was hollow, swallowed by the silent courtyard.

Nothing.

My heart sank. Was the legend false? Was he not here?

The torchlight of the search party appeared at the courtyard entrance. I could see the glint of light on their armor.

Desperation took over. I stopped knocking and started pounding on the door with my fists, with my whole body, my voice a raw croak. "Please! Open the door! Help me!"

The drug was a fire in my veins now, my body heating uncontrollably, my skin flushing a feverish red. They had mixed it with something else, an aphrodisiac to make me compliant for Finch. Vile.

Just as a guard spotted me, just as they began to charge, the heavy oak door slid open without a sound, just a crack.

I didn't hesitate. I squeezed through the opening. The door slid silently shut behind me, cutting off the noise, the light, the entire world.

Outside, I could hear Eleanor's furious curses and the guards' startled cries, but none dared to approach the door.

I was in a vast, empty hall, lit only by a sliver of moonlight from a high, domed ceiling. The cold, crisp scent was stronger here, carrying an oppressive weight, an aura of indisputable power.

A tall figure stood in the center of the hall, his back to me. He wore simple, dark robes, and his short, black hair seemed to drink the moonlight.

He didn't turn. His voice was deep and cold, like it was dredged up from a frozen abyss. "Who gave you the audacity to trespass in my domain?"

My legs gave out. I leaned against the wall to keep from falling. "I... I'm being hunted," I gasped. "I need sanctuary."

"Sanctuary?" He finally turned, slowly. I couldn't see his face clearly in the gloom, only a pair of gray eyes that burned like embers in the dark, ancient and utterly indifferent. He was nothing like the decrepit old man I had imagined. He was young.

He stepped closer, and his nostrils flared almost imperceptibly. For a heartbeat, something flickered in those gray eyes—surprise, maybe recognition. I heard him murmur, so low I barely caught it: "Frost... and embers? That scent... it's been centuries." Then his gaze sharpened, and his voice turned glacial again.

"The Serranos' little problems are of no concern to me," he said, his tone so cold it was clear he was about to throw me back to the wolves.

The heat in my body was becoming unbearable, my sanity fraying. I knew simple begging would be useless against a being like this.

I needed to give him a reason he couldn't refuse. A bargain that would pique the interest of something that had seen everything.

Shaking, I took a step toward him. The tattered remains of my dress offered little modesty after the climb. "I... I have nothing to offer you," I said, lifting my head to meet those terrifying eyes.

I steeled myself, gathering the last of my willpower for the most insane gamble of my life.

I reached up and tore the neckline of my dress, exposing skin flushed crimson by the drug. "But I can offer you... myself."

The air in the hall solidified. The cold, clean scent of him became intensely predatory, an invisible net closing around me.

In the depths of his gray eyes, a strange light flickered. It was the look of a hunter who has just spotted unexpected, intriguing prey.

Chapter 3

ADELAIDE HUGHES POV:

He took a step forward, and the sheer force of his presence was a physical blow, nearly making me choke. I forced myself to stand my ground. Retreat meant failure.

His gaze was a physical touch, a blade of ice tracing a path across my exposed skin. "Yourself?" A soft, almost inaudible scoff, thick with derision. "A wolfless orphan. What value do you think you possess?"

He was testing me. I knew it. Any sign of fear, and he would discard me like trash.

The drug was a raging inferno now. I bit my lip, forcing myself to be bolder. "I may be wolfless, but I was a Gamma on the battlefield. My body, my will... they have more value than you can imagine."

I even took a step closer, closing the distance, deliberately placing myself within his suffocating aura. "Aren't you curious? What kind of... flavor... a broken warrior might have in her desperation?"

It was a raw, naked provocation. I was betting everything on the ancient, primal instinct that had to lie beneath his cold exterior.

He was silent, his gray eyes turning into bottomless pits. I could feel something in him stir, a great, sleeping beast opening one eye.

Just as my strength was about to fail, he reached out. His cold fingers brushed against the side of my neck. I flinched, not from fear, but from a strange jolt, like a spark of lightning.

It was the most primitive form of recognition among our kind. Even as a wolfless, I felt the tremor down to my soul. His thumb pressed gently against my pulse point, his eyes narrowing slightly. It felt as if he wasn't just touching my skin, but scenting my very soul—a scent I couldn't even detect myself, a mix of frost and slumbering embers.

His deep voice was a murmur against my ear, a new, rough edge to its icy calm. "You've succeeded, little thing. You have my interest."

The next second, the world spun. I was swept off my feet, held fast in arms as strong as iron bands.

He carried me across the vast, empty hall, deeper into the darkness. I took it as a sign. The bargain was struck.

From outside the door, Eleanor Serrano was still screaming. "He won't protect you! The Ancient One never interferes in family affairs! Get out here, you filth!"

Her words were cut short as the sealed door flew open with a deafening boom. It wasn't pushed. It was blasted open by an invisible force.

Eleanor and her guards were thrown back, stumbling over each other, their torches scattering across the stone courtyard.

The man holding me, the "Ancient One," didn't even look back. He just kept walking, his steps unhurried.

But an invisible pressure, an aura of absolute authority and killing intent, rolled out from him, blanketing the entire courtyard.

It wasn't the scent of a normal Alpha. It was something older, purer, something that made the soul itself tremble. It was the power of a Lycan.

Every guard dropped to their knees. Even Eleanor Serrano, her face a mask of white terror, stood frozen, her legs shaking too violently to hold her. She couldn't utter another word.

This was absolute power. No words, no actions needed. Just the release of his aura was enough to make the proud matriarch of the Serrano family cower like a dog.

Lying in his arms, I watched the terrified faces outside, and a sick, triumphant pleasure flooded me. My gamble had paid off.

He carried me into a sparse room, furnished with only a massive bed and a window that framed the moon.

He tossed me onto the bed without a shred of gentleness. The drug had reached its peak. I was a fish out of water, writhing, my body no longer my own.

He stood over me, his gray eyes churning with dark emotions I couldn't decipher.

He leaned down, and his scent—that cold, winter forest—enveloped me completely. I could feel the tension in his body, the storm he was barely suppressing in those gray eyes. My provocation, combined with the drug, had ignited the ancient predator.

There were no more words. Only a raw, violent claiming. Pain and the false pleasure of the drug intertwined, a wildfire consuming everything. All I could hear was his ragged breathing and my own broken whimpers. It was a primal, adrenaline-fueled collision.

In the heart of the storm, the drug in my system was overwhelmed, burned away by a force far more powerful and domineering. My consciousness frayed at the edges, my body feeling like it had been torn apart and reassembled.

Just before I blacked out, I heard him whisper against my ear, his voice hoarse and absolute. "From now on, you are mine. Your life, your body, your revenge... it all belongs to me."
