After Benjamin switched the lights off, he carried me in his arms and rubbed his head gently against my neck.
"Lena, are you feeling unwell? You seem a little out of it," he said with concern.
I turned over, facing away from him. "Maybe I didn't sleep well."
He chucked. "Alright then, I'll let you off tonight and just cuddle you."
Before long, the sounds of Benjamin's breathing became steady, and he drifted into a deep slumber.
Under the dim glow of the moonlight, I gazed intently at him until tears began to uncontrollably stream down my face.
I could still remember the day he got down on one knee and proposed to me. He had told me, "Please give me a chance to be your knight. I will love you and protect you forever, until the very end of my life."
At this moment, every beautiful memory felt like nothing more than a cruel joke.
I tossed and turned, unable to get myself to fall asleep. Thus, I picked up the tablet and went to the living room.
I tapped in and checked his other social apps, even Google Drive, but every single one had been logged out.
Benjamin, you had to be feeling guilty as hell, huh?
The moment I climbed back into bed, Benjamin instinctively embraced me in his sleep.
"Lena, love me forever…" he suddenly muttered.
His nose that brushed against my ear felt warm and scalding. He hadn't woken up—he just murmured this before sinking back into deep sleep.
The familiar scent and warmth of his body had once been my safest haven. So, when did this embrace find a new owner?
…
The next morning, Benjamin held up his tie, pouting as he said petulantly, "I want Lena to tie it for me!"
He always went for a morning run, and after washing up, his skin was still damp with the condensed steam.
His usually cool, indifferent eyes looked at me, glistening with moisture. And I—unable to resist—relented.
He triumphantly pulled me into his arms and rubbed his chin lightly against the top of my head.
Benjamin gently said, "Lena, do you want to go to the auction held at Jewel tonight? Shall I bid on the biggest ruby and give it to you, hmm?"
The auction catalog from Jewel Hotel had already been delivered to me in advance, and I could freely choose from all kinds of exquisite jewelry and rare gemstones firsthand.
The ruby he mentioned was the centerpiece of the event—huge and exceptionally precious.
"Lena, as long as you like it, I'll make sure to get it."
I was a jewelry designer, and I enjoyed crafting jewelry. Sometimes, I even made pieces by hand.
Benjamin had always been supportive of my career. When I'd first graduated, Benjamin had spent a fortune purchasing all kinds of gemstones and materials so I could experiment with my designs.
Meanwhile, participating in numerous competitions allowed me to establish myself quickly in the industry.
But the truth was—I simply loved jewelry design. I preferred to take my time refining my craft, which was why I had already withdrawn from all competitions.
When I met Benjamin's expectant gaze, I curved my lips into a small smile, saying, "I don't like that ruby. Just forget about it. Besides, it just so happens that I want to take a break for a while."
Benjamin raised an eyebrow, then chuckled as he ruffled my hair. "That's good too. Don't pressure yourself, and take your time to rest. Whenever you're ready to get back to work, I'll get you even better ones."
After he got dressed neatly, he bid me farewell and left for the office.
I stood on the balcony and watched his Maybach drive out of the neighborhood.
And then, as if possessed, I opened my phone and connected to Benjamin's dashcam app.
I heard him say, "Bid on it and gift it to Jessica. Find a good design company to create a complete set of accessories for her.
"I'm on my way to the office now. I'll be spending the entire day with her."
Benjamin chuckled lightly and said, "Tell her to wear the bunny outfit."
I closed my eyes. I felt my heart suddenly clench with excruciating pain before finally becoming so heavy that it seemed to plummet and crash down into the abyss.
As I sat dejectedly on the couch, my mind kept replaying the things Benjamin said.
Would he hug her? Would he kiss her?
When I rushed to his company, the only person in the office was Benjamin's assistant, Anson Pierce. He didn't usually stay by Benjamin's side while he was going about his tasks.
Anson greeted me warmly when he saw me. "Mrs. Lane, you can wait in the office first. Mr. Lane is in a meeting now. Would you like me to make you a cup of coffee?"
I declined his offer and stepped into Benjamin's office.
Benjamin had always known how to enjoy life, even as a boss. His office was a massive suite—the outer section was his workspace, and further inside, there was a private lounge and a game room.
I walked straight into the game room, feeling restless and upset, so I decided to distract myself with a game.
"Don't look! I'm shy!"
A burst of soft-sounding laughter came from somewhere else, and I instinctively yanked off my headphones.
"Alright, alright, you change—I won't look." That was Benjamin's voice.
Even though I couldn't see his face, I could easily picture his indulgent expression as he said those words.
The game room door wasn't fully closed, and their flirty voices carried through loud and clear.
I turned my head and looked over.
The tall man was shaking his head with his back turned to me. The petite woman slipped off her black business suit and revealed a bunny officer outfit underneath. She then pulled a pair of bunny ears from her bag and perched them on her head.
She hugged Benjamin from behind and teased, "Freeze! You're under arrest. Now, hands up!"
Benjamin laughed, his shoulders shaking slightly. He raised both hands in surrender and turned to face her.
But the woman wasn't satisfied. She threw herself into his arms and stomped her feet in protest, nuzzling her face against him as she whined coyly," Come on! You're not allowed to laugh at me!"
Benjamin sighed with indulgence and smiled helplessly, wrapping his arms around her in a protective embrace.
"Okay, my bunny police officer."
The woman, triumphant, let her mischievous hands slip gently into the man's shirt. She traced over his abs and reached all the way down.
Benjamin's breathing grew noticeably heavier, and his gaze darkened. The hands he had raised now gripped the woman, lifting her into his arms.
While she was held in this position, the woman wrapped herself around the man's neck and tilted her head up to kiss him.
I felt a sharp pain stab through my eyes, and I instinctively blinked. Following that, tears began streaming down my cheeks.
The man who told me countless times that he would only love me for his whole life now seemed like a wild beast out of control, embracing another woman and releasing all his passion.
I bit down hard on my lips, forcing myself to stay silent.
He probably loved her, right?
This man—who became increasingly calm and restrained with me—was now impatient and acted desperate, like an eager young boy.
He eagerly tore apart the bunny officer costume and pinned her down on the desk. She clung to his neck, responding just as eagerly.
Soon, the sounds of a heated, steamy exchange could be heard across the room.
I felt my blood slowly turn to ice, and my body was frozen in place—unable to react at all.
The two of them moved from the desk to the couch before finally shifting to the private lounge.
I stared at the tightly shut lounge door, listening to the fevered sounds within. Without a word, I quietly closed the door to the game room.
Their session lasted a full hour. When they emerged, they were neatly dressed again. The woman had changed into a pink sports outfit, looking energetic and refreshed.
Benjamin sat back in his oversized office chair as the woman nestled onto his lap.
"Benny, stay with me tonight. I even prepared a nurse outfit for you!" she cooed.
Benjamin chuckled, stroking her hair. "Still not satisfied, bunny?"
The woman pouted and poked him with her hand. "Benny, you're so mean! You're always bullying me."
Just then, a knock sounded at the office door, and Benjamin's friends strolled in.
The woman hopped off Benjamin as though she were a frightened rabbit.
His friends exchanged knowing glances at the two. "Alas, did we come at a bad time? We interrupted Ben and Jessie's intimate time."
Despite their words, they still walked in and made themselves comfortable.
"Ben, I got that ruby you wanted. We figured you didn't bid in person because you wanted to gift it to Jessie."
"Ben, Jessie is so adorable. I have to say she's much more youthful and energetic compared to Selena Johnson."
All these years of marriage, Benjamin had rarely allowed me to interact with his friends. In his words, he had to protect me properly and keep me away from these playboys.
And yet, these men were obviously very familiar with the woman and seemed to have a great relationship with her.
Benjamin furrowed his brows tightly after hearing the comparison about me.
"Selena is my treasure. Keep your mouths shut. No one is to talk nonsense in front of her. Otherwise, I won't let any of you off," he said.
Then, he even earnestly added, "My Selena is the best."
His friends chuckled. "Alright, alright. Your wife is the best.
"It should be fine for you to join us for dinner tonight, right? Don't worry. We'll make sure you get home before curfew."
"That's right. But today, we have to treat Jessie to a drink first!" another friend said.
Benjamin domineeringly pulled the woman into his arms, making her fall completely into his embrace.
"I'll drink with you guys," he declared.
"Woah, must you be this protective? Alright, let's go!"
Then, the group of them left while chatting and laughing together. Among them were Benjamin's friends, childhood friends, and even his cousin.
They got along well with this woman and affectionately called her Jessie.
How ridiculous to think that I once believed I had a perfect love.
After I left Benjamin's office, Anson glanced at me a few more times. He probably didn't understand why I wasn't leaving with Benjamin and the others.
I ignored him and wandered home alone, lost in thought.
My heart ached, and my mind kept replaying the image of Benjamin getting entangled with that woman.
I knew who she was. She was the new secretary Benjamin's company had just hired. She was also the one who sent him the bunny officer video on the tablet.
Her name was Jessica Cooper, a fresh university graduate—truly undeniably attractive and tempting.
When she first joined the company, Benjamin had even joked that she reminded him of me when I was just starting out.
I had her WhatsApp account, and I clicked on her status updates.
The very first story was a selfie of her bunny officer costume, with a small mosaic carefully placed over her private parts.
Her caption read, "Bunny officer has captured Mr. Benny's heart today."
Benjamin's like on that story felt like a stab to my heart. He had openly commented, "Of course, Mr. Benny's heart belongs to the bunny officer."
He probably didn't think I would ever see Jessica's social media. After all, I didn't have the habit of scrolling through my social media accounts.
I thought back to when we first got together. I had always wanted reassurance about my place in his heart.
Whenever I saw someone beautiful, I would ask him, "Do you like this type of woman?"
He would laugh helplessly and tightly hug me in his arms. "What are you thinking? No matter what my type is, I only like you. There is only one Selena Johnson in this world. Besides you, even if they were as beautiful as Aphrodite, I wouldn't spare them a second glance."
Back then, I was overjoyed. Now, I was utterly heartbroken.
Five years had passed, and my husband—who had always been so devoted, gentle, and considerate of me—had actually lied to me.
I sat there blankly for two hours before finally making up my mind to call my mom, who was abroad.
"Mom, I've decided to come to you. Yes, I want a fresh start, a new identity."
My mom was thrilled. She had always wanted me to join her from the start, but I had stubbornly stayed behind to get married.
"Are you sure? Did you get into an argument with your husband? Don't act on impulse," she advised.
"I'm sure. It's not an impulse," I replied.
I didn't want him anymore.
Mom helped me book a flight out, and I also immediately contacted a lawyer to draft a divorce agreement.
Then, I calmly ate dinner before laying in bed and scrolling through my phone.
Sure enough, Benjamin came home right on time. He spent a long time in the bathroom before finally climbing into bed and pulling me into his arms from behind.
He loved sleeping like this. He said that holding me this way made him feel happy and secure.
I could clearly see the red marks left behind on his body. My eyes burned with tears, and Benjamin immediately became anxious.
"What's wrong, Lena?"
I sniffled, forcing back my tears. "It's nothing. I just saw a story about a husband cheating. It was really heartbreaking."
Benjamin chuckled softly and said, "Silly, what's there to be sad about? I would never do that."
I stared at him intently, and he emphasized helplessly, "I will always love you, Selena. If I ever betray you, may I live in endless suffering, never finding relief."
"Sure," I said, nodding.
…
I told Benjamin I was attending a designer exchange conference and would be gone for a week.
He had originally planned to come with me, but right before we were supposed to leave, he received a video call.
On the other end, Jessica was dressed in a leopard-print bodycon dress, fishnet stockings, and high heels. A leather collar adorned her neck, and she held a small whip in her hand.
She asked, "Benny, will the leopard girl get to see you tonight?"
Benjamin's gaze darkened, and he turned to look at me. "Lena, there's an urgent matter at work that I need to handle. You can go over first, and I'll join you tomorrow, okay?"
I smiled as I looked at his shifty gaze and the forced calm on his face.
"It's fine. Work is important. I can handle it myself," I said.
Benjamin let out a long sigh of relief and pulled me into a gentle hug.
While in his embrace, I whispered in his ear, "Goodbye."
His body visibly stiffened for a moment, but he quickly relaxed, said his goodbyes, and left.
As I waited for my flight in the departure hall, I received a video from Jessica. In the video, Benjamin was holding her down while indulging in passion and whispering sweet nothings.
"Selena, do you finally see who Benjamin really loves?
"Did you hear that? He said he'd rather die than be without me.
"Did you know he likes uniforms and little whips? Did he ever play like this with you?"
I took screenshots of this and saved them, then blocked Jessica from my contacts.
Then, I sent the saved videos and screenshots to Benjamin's friend group and posted them on my social media.
After that, I turned off my phone and walked away.
