The Wife He Betrayed Chapter 1

My phone buzzed at 8:47 on the coldest night of the Boston winter.

"Evie." Madison Reed, my best friend since freshman year, didn't bother with hello. "Where's Adrian right now?"

I set down the wooden spoon. The risotto kept bubbling. "Client dinner. Why?"

"Because I just watched your husband walk into the Larchmont Hotel with his arm around a girl who can't be a day over twenty-five."

The word *girl* landed strangely, like she'd spoken a foreign language.

"Mads, he meets developers downtown all the time. It's probably work."

"Work." She laughed, short and mean. "Does work wear the gray cashmere scarf you bought him last week? The one you spent forty minutes picking out while I starved to death in Nordstrom?"

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Lots of people own gray scarves."

"Evie. Check your texts."

The image loaded slowly, pixel by pixel, like it wanted to torture me.

Adrian Cole, my husband of four years, stood under the hotel awning. Snow dusted his dark hair. He was bending down to kiss a young woman's forehead. My scarf was looped around her throat.

In his other hand he held a small navy box with a silver ribbon.

I knew that ribbon. I'd tied it myself. Our anniversary watch. I'd left it on his desk three days ago with a note that said *Open on the 14th.*

"Evie? You still there?"

"I'm coming."

---

The Larchmont lobby smelled like money and pine. Madison was waiting by the fireplace, her red coat buttoned wrong, her cheeks flushed from the cold.

"Room 1408," she said. "I tipped the bellhop fifty bucks. Let's go."

I didn't move. I walked to the tall front windows instead and watched the snow fall over Boylston Street.

"Evie, what are you doing?"

"Thinking."

"Think in the elevator."

"Mads." My voice came out calm, which scared me more than tears would have. "Do you remember the first office? Above the laundromat in Allston?"

She stopped tugging at my sleeve.

"I paid that rent," I said. "Eighteen months of it. With the money my parents left me. I quit Hollister Creative so I could answer his phones for free. I waited tables on weekends and did data entry at night so he'd never have to beg an investor for anything."

"I know, honey. I was there."

"He held my hand at our wedding and told a hundred people he'd never let me down."

"So let's go upstairs and remind him."

She started for the elevators. I caught her wrist.

"No."

"*No?* He's up there with—"

"If I go up there screaming, what happens?" I turned to face her. "I'm the hysterical wife. I'm the problem. Six months from now, he's telling his lawyer I was unstable. I won't hand him that."

Madison stared at me like she didn't recognize me.

Then, slowly, her shoulders dropped. "You're scarier than I thought."

"I'm just tired."

We stepped out into the snow. My phone buzzed again.

*Adrian: Stuck with the Morrison group. Gonna be a late one, babe. Don't wait up.*

A second message followed. A photo of a glass of cabernet on white linen, candlelight glowing behind it.

*Love you, see you soon.* ❤️

I'd read those exact words a thousand times. Tonight they made my stomach turn over.

Madison read over my shoulder. "Want me to key his car?"

"Not tonight."

---

At home, I reheated the risotto and ate half a plate standing at the counter. Then I pulled out the ironing board and pressed his charcoal suit for tomorrow's board meeting. Every crease sharp. Every sleeve perfect.

It gave my hands something to do besides shake.

At 11:32, his key turned in the lock.

"Evie? You're still up?" Adrian dropped his bag by the door and crossed the kitchen in three strides. He pressed his lips to my forehead.

He smelled like vanilla and jasmine. Not my perfume. I don't wear perfume.

"God, what a night." He wrapped his arms around my waist and rested his chin on my shoulder. "Morrison wouldn't shut up about zoning permits. Three hours. I wanted to stab myself with a fork."

"Poor baby."

"You know what got me through it?" He nuzzled my neck. "Thinking about coming home to you. Best thing I ever did was marry you, Evelyn Hart."

My eyes burned. I blinked until they stopped.

"Adrian. Were you at the Larchmont tonight?"

His arms went stiff around me. Just for a second. If I hadn't spent four years memorizing him, I would have missed it.

Then he laughed and pulled back, grinning.

"The Larchmont? Yeah, for like five minutes. Morrison's assistant had too much wine, so I walked her up to make sure she didn't fall on her face." He tilted his head. "Who told you that?"

"Someone mentioned seeing you."

"Let me guess. Madison?" He sighed, rubbing my arms. "Babe, you've got to stop listening to gossip. People love drama. You know I'd never."

I studied his face. Warm brown eyes. Easy smile. Not a single crack.

He was good at this. Better than I'd ever known.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay?" He kissed my cheek. "That's my girl. I'm grabbing a shower. I smell like that restaurant."

*You smell like her,* I thought.

The bathroom door closed. The water started.

I walked to the bedroom, where his jacket hung over the chair, and slid my hand into the inside pocket.

A folded slip of paper. Larchmont Hotel Valet. Entry stamped 8:31 p.m.

Sixteen minutes before Madison called.

I flipped it over. Ten digits in purple ink, round and bubbly, with a tiny heart dotting the end.

*Call me — K.*

The shower kept running. I took a photo of both sides, emailed it to myself, then tucked the ticket under the sweaters in my bottom drawer.

When Adrian climbed into bed, I pretended to sleep. When he started snoring, I got up and sat on the living room couch in the dark.

I was still sitting there when the sky over the harbor turned gray.

---

At seven-fifteen, he came downstairs in the suit I'd ironed.

"You look amazing in that," I said, reaching up to straighten his tie.

"Because my wife takes care of me." He smiled down at me.

I tugged the knot snug against his throat. Maybe a little too snug.

"Come home early tonight," I said softly. "We haven't had a real dinner together in weeks."

"Deal." He cupped my jaw. "And this weekend? Rockport. Just us. That little seafood shack where I spilled chowder all over your dress on our first date. Remember?"

"I remember everything."

"That's why I love you." He kissed me, grabbed his keys, and was gone.

The door clicked shut.

My smile dropped like something cut loose from a string.

I opened my laptop at the kitchen table and dug through the old folders until I found it. *Cole Design Studio – Founding Investment.* Four years old. My signature right next to his.

I'd never read past the first page. I'd never needed to.

This time, I opened the bank records.

My parents' money. One hundred and twenty thousand dollars. The deposit was there, dated two weeks after our wedding.

And then, nine days later, the entire amount had moved out again.

Not into the company account.

Into an account ending in 4471, under a name I had never seen in my life.

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

I'd thought last night was the worst thing my husband could do to me.

I was starting to realize it was only the first thing I'd found.
