Chapter 2

The motel room stifled me; Logan's USB felt heavier than it should, pulse racing.

The laptop glared as I plugged in the drive—spreadsheets, emails, and receipts flooded the screen.

First, meaningless data—until I saw my father’s company, tangled in Logan’s financial dealings.

“What the hell…” My voice cracked.

Frantic clicks revealed the truth: Logan was stealing from my father, with Sophie complicit.

I leaned back, chest tight—this wasn’t just betrayal, it was calculated and methodical.

The motel phone buzzed, breaking the silence. I hesitated, staring at the unknown number.

Against my better judgment, I answered. “Hello?”

“Elena.”

The voice sent a chill racing down my spine. It was Sophie.

“You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into,” she said, her tone low and sharp.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded, my voice trembling.

A bitter laugh hissed, “That USB? You should’ve left it. Trust me—let it go.”

"Trust you?" I spat, knuckles white. "Tell me, Sophie—what exactly is Logan planning?"

Her pause was deafening.

“You’ll regret it,” she said finally, her words dripping with menace.

The line went dead, leaving me with nothing but the hum of the dial tone.

I sat frozen, her warning reverberating in my mind. Stay out of it? Regret it? Not a chance.

A shadow moved outside the window; I turned, catching a figure vanish into the night.

Fear twisted inside me, but my instincts to run were smothered by something stronger.

Resolve.

If they thought fear would break me, Sophie and Logan were about to be proven wrong.

The USB drive sat beside me, a beacon of their deceit. And I? I was done being their pawn.

They’d lit a fire they couldn’t contain.

Let them try.

The room felt icy, Adrian’s words pressing down like a storm on the verge of breaking.

"Logan isn’t just cheating you," Adrian said, urgency lacing his words. "He’s laundering money."

The air left my lungs in a rush. “What are you saying?” My voice cracked, each word feeling foreign in my mouth.

Adrian leaned in, eyes sharp. “It’s worse—Logan’s using your father’s company to launder dirty money.”

My pulse roared as I blurted, “You’re wrong,” the denial reflexive, desperate, and unconvincing.

"I wish I were," he said, sliding documents over. "Elena, this goes deeper than fraud."

The words lingered. Trembling, I flipped through the papers—names, dates, transactions—evidence I couldn’t ignore.

“Why?” My voice was barely a whisper. “Why involve my father?”

Adrian’s gaze softened. “It’s not just money, Elena—Logan’s after power, controlling everyone in his orbit.”

Bile rose as Logan’s charm twisted sinister. “I should’ve seen it,” I murmured. “He fooled me.”

"That he loved you," Adrian said sharply. "Charm and manipulation—that’s how he blinds people."

The truth cut deep. Feeling exposed, I asked, “And you? Why are you helping me?”

Adrian smirked. “I don’t like people like Logan. And maybe… I remember the girl who stood up.”

His words stirred forgotten memories—Adrian, the quiet boy with bruises, and me standing beside him.

Now, the roles have reversed.

“I’ll help,” Adrian said, cutting through my thoughts. “But be ready—Logan won’t let go easily.”

The room fell silent, his warning sinking into the depths of my resolve.

I met his gaze, steeling myself. “I’m not afraid.”

Adrian’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “You should be.”

Before I could reply, tires crunching on gravel made Adrian freeze, his expression shifting instantly.

“Were you followed?” he hissed, already moving to the window.

“No,” I said, my chest tightening. “At least, I don’t think—”

His curse was low and sharp. “Stay here.”

I grabbed his arm, the fear I’d suppressed surging to the surface. “What’s going on?”

Adrian’s gaze flicked to the door, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Someone doesn’t want us talking.”

The weight of his words settled in, chilling me to my core.

Then came the knock—slow, deliberate, and menacing.

Chapter 3

The motel room was shadowed, the documents before me too personal—my fingers hesitated to touch them.

Adrian’s voice cut through the heavy silence. “Elena, you need to see this.”

I glanced at him, his expression carved from stone. His jaw was tight, a muscle ticking as though he were bracing for my reaction.

“I already know Logan’s corrupt,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “What else could there possibly be?”

“Connections,” Adrian said, tapping papers. “Logan’s using your father’s company as a shield—offshore accounts.”

Anger and dread twisted inside me. The papers blurred—nothing mattered compared to the betrayal.

“He’s not just stealing,” Adrian said sharply. “He’s involving dangerous people—drug traffickers, arms dealers.”

I slammed my palm on the table, the sound sharp in the suffocating quiet. “Stop,” I snapped. “I can’t—”

“You can.” Adrian’s voice softened, but his eyes didn’t waver. “If you don’t, they’ll bury you along with him.”

Before I could reply, my phone buzzed—jarring, cutting through the tension. My heart skipped.

Unknown Number: You’re playing with fire, Elena. Keep going, and you’ll burn.

My grip tightened, phone trembling. I handed it to Adrian, his lips tightening as he read.

“Who is it?” I demanded.

“Could be anyone,” he muttered, reaching for the knife on his boot. “They’re trying to scare you.”

“Well, it’s working,” I hissed, the anger bubbling just beneath my skin.

Adrian stepped closer, his voice low. “They don’t know who they’re messing with. You’re stronger.”

“Am I?” I shot back, my voice cracking under the weight of my doubts.

He held my gaze, intense. “Yes. And you don’t have to do this alone.”

Before I could reply, there was a knock at the door. A cold, deliberate knock.

Adrian’s hand flew to his knife, his body going rigid. “Stay behind me,” he ordered.

I didn’t argue, pulse pounding as Adrian approached the door. The knock came again, deliberate.

“What?” I whispered.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he yanked the door open.

Pinned with a bloodied knife, a wedding invitation with red ink—my name, Logan's.

Adrian held the bloody invitation, his voice cold. "Message received," he said, unyielding.

I stared at the invitation, my breath shallow. They weren’t just warning me. They were daring me to fight back.

The study reeked of betrayal. I stood before him, fists clenched, heart pounding.

“You knew,” I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “You knew what Logan was doing, and you let it happen.”

My father’s face was a mask of feigned calm, but his hand tightened around the crystal tumbler of whiskey. “Elena, it’s not that simple.”

“Not that simple?” I echoed, my voice rising. “You let him bleed this family dry, drag our name into filth, and now you’re telling me it’s complicated?”

He sighed, a sound more weary than regretful. “Logan was—”

“Was what?” I cut him off. “A criminal? A manipulative bastard? You’re supposed to protect this family, not sell it out to the highest bidder!”

His gaze hardened. “I thought marriage would stabilize things, Elena. Keep him close, keep the empire intact.”

A sharp laugh escaped me, hollow and bitter. “So I was a pawn in your twisted game of chess? Did you even care what it cost me?”

“I care,” he said, his voice low but firm. “More than you realize. But you’re naive if you think this world runs on morals. Logan was a necessary evil.”

“A necessary evil?” I repeated, my words sharp enough to cut glass. “He’s a parasite, and you let him latch onto us. Onto me.”

He looked away, the lines on his face deepening. For the first time, he looked old. Defeated. But I couldn’t afford sympathy—not now.

“You knew he was laundering money through the company,” I continued, my voice steady but cold. “You knew about the offshore accounts, the arms deals. And you did nothing.”

“I kept you out of it,” he snapped, his calm facade cracking. “I kept you safe.”

“Safe?” My laughter was bitter. “You tied me to a man who’s destroying everything we’ve built. That’s not protection. That’s betrayal.”

The room fell silent, the weight of my words hanging heavy between us.

Finally, he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper. “What do you want, Elena?”

“I want to burn it all down,” I said, my tone icy and unyielding. “Logan. The empire. Every lie you’ve built. I’ll tear it apart, piece by piece, and watch it crumble.”

His eyes narrowed, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them. “You don’t know what you’re getting into.”

“I know exactly what I’m getting into,” I replied. “And I don’t care.”

Before he could respond, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, the screen glowing with a message.

A terse message glowed on my screen: You need to see this. Now.

I turned and left, leaving my father in the suffocating silence he had created.

I entered Adrian's apartment, the tension thick in the air. He paced, clutching a photo.

“What is it?” I asked, my voice taut.

He handed me the photo silently. My breath caught—Logan, Sophie, my father, and a familiar man.

“A known crime lord,” he said grimly, his tone dripping with controlled fury. “This isn’t just business, Elena. It’s war.”

The photo slipped from my fingers, fluttering to the floor like a harbinger of doom.

“They’ve been playing us from the start,” he continued, his voice like steel. “And now, it’s our move.”

I met his gaze, my heart pounding in my chest. “Then let’s make it count.”

The sound of shattering glass erupted behind us, and the room plunged into darkness.

Chapter 4

The café smell of burnt coffee and deceit. Adrian’s words echoed: "Know your exits. Trust no one."

I sipped my coffee, flicking through documents—Logan’s offshore accounts, shell companies—dangerous truths.

The doorbell jingled. Logan entered, his presence commanding, a predatory smile warning everyone.

I tightened my grip on the cup, forcing my breathing to remain steady.

He spotted me, his gaze pinning me, his smile cold, full of menace, no warmth.

“Elena,” he greeted, sliding into the seat, cufflinks clinking—a sound like a threat.

“You’re early,” I said, keeping my voice light.

He leaned back, eyes gleaming with mockery. “Can’t wait to see your next game.”

I matched his gaze, refusing to flinch. “Funny. I was about to ask you the same thing.”

His laughter was low, intimate, yet grating. “You’re bold, Elena. Now, it’s inconvenient.”

“Only for you,” I shot back, leaning forward. “Does it bother you, Logan? Knowing your house of cards is about to collapse?”

His smile faltered, just for a second. It was enough.

“You think you’ve won because you’ve got a few scraps of paper?” he hissed, his voice like venom. “You don’t even know what you’re up against.”

“Then enlighten me,” I challenged, my pulse pounding in my ears.

He leaned closer, whispering coldly, “You don’t have the guts to take me down.”

Before I could respond, two men entered, their eyes scanning the room, landing on us.

Logan’s smirk widened. “You should have stayed in your pretty little cage, Elena. Now, you’ll see what happens when you stray.”

I stood quickly, my chair scraping loudly. Logan didn’t flinch as eyes turned to us.

The two men closed in, suffocating. My fingers itched for the blade Adrian gave me.

“Stay,” Logan murmured, his tone mocking. “Let’s not make a scene.”

I met his gaze, my voice steady despite the fear clawing at my throat. “I’m not afraid of you.”

He chuckled, standing slowly, his height dwarfing me. “You should be.”

The men lunged, chaos erupted. Logan’s grip tightened: “You’re mine, Elena. Always will be.”

As I closed the door, the thrill of the hunt surged. This time, I played for revenge.

I slipped into his office, heart racing, the bug recording. Today, I’d tear his empire down.

I pretended to admire the office, but I saw the cracks in Logan’s fortress.

I activated the recorder, scanning the folders—offshore accounts, dangerous deals, all waiting to be exposed.

But then, the door creaked open.

"Sophie," I muttered under my breath, my heart dropping into my stomach.

She stood in the doorway, arms crossed, eyes narrowing—she knew something wasn’t right.

I straightened up, forcing a casual smile. “I was just—”

“You’re snooping,” she interrupted, her voice low but cold. "I always knew you'd find a way to break into Logan’s world, Elena. But this?" Her gaze swept over the desk, landing on the bug I’d hidden under the papers.

I froze.

“You think you’re smart, don’t you?” Sophie took a slow step toward me, her fingers lightly brushing the edge of the desk. “You’re playing with fire.”

I met her gaze, trying to hide the panic rising in my chest. “I’m not afraid of you.”

Her lips curled into a small, cruel smile. “Oh, you should be.”

I watched her closely. Sophie was Logan’s shield, willing to bury me to protect him.

“You think Logan’s going to fall for your little act?” she asked, voice dripping with disdain. “You’re a fool if you think you’re fooling anyone.”

I leaned in, my eyes narrowing. “Maybe I am. But you’re wrong if you think Logan doesn’t have a weakness. Everyone does.”

Sophie’s eyes flickered, a brief sign of weakness, but she quickly regained her composure.

"You think you’re playing a game,” she said, her voice dangerously low.

“But you’re not. This is real. And when Logan finds out you’ve crossed him, there will be no turning back.”

I swallowed hard, but my resolve didn’t waver. “I’m not backing down, Sophie. Not this time.”

Silence thickened. Sophie exhaled sharply, turning to the door. "You'll regret this," she warned.

I barely had time to process her words before I heard Logan’s voice from the hallway.

“What’s going on in here?” he asked, his tone calm but laced with an undercurrent of danger.

Stepping back into his world, I knew mistakes weren’t allowed. But it was too late to retreat.

Logan filled the doorway, his gaze intense. "You’ve made your choice, Elena," he said.
