Chapter 3

For a long time, Isla didn't move. She lay motionless on the vast, cold bed, the physical ache in her body a distant echo to the chilling void that had opened up in her soul. The scent of his cologne lingered in the air, a suffocating reminder of his violation.

Eventually, she forced her aching limbs to obey. She stumbled into the adjoining master bathroom, a cavern of marble and glass she rarely used. She kept her eyes fixed on the floor, deliberately avoiding her own reflection in the wall of mirrors.

She turned the shower on, twisting the knob until the water was scalding hot. Steam filled the enclosure, but it couldn't warm the ice in her bones. She stepped under the spray, scrubbing her skin raw with a bar of soap, as if she could wash away his touch, his scent, his presence from her very pores. The water sluiced over the faint bruises already beginning to form.

Finally, her strength gave out. She slid down the cool, tiled wall to the floor of the shower, the hot water beating down on her. She opened her mouth and let out a silent, gut-wrenching scream, her body shaking with sobs that made no sound.

The intense pain, both physical and emotional, acted as a key, unlocking a memory she kept buried deep inside. The sterile smell of the hospital-grade soap suddenly transported her back three years.

(Flashback)

She was standing in a different sterile room, this one filled with the quiet, rhythmic beeping of machines. Her mother, Elara, lay in a coma, a pale, still figure tangled in a web of tubes and wires. Her life was tethered to those machines.

Her stepfather, Frank Kowalski, was pacing beside the bed, wringing his hands. "It's all gone, Isla," he'd confessed, his voice thick with shame. His gambling addiction had finally done it. He had bankrupted their family business, a small but respected embroidery workshop that had been in her mother's family for generations.

Then the doctors had delivered the final blow. Her mother's care was astronomically expensive. Without payment, they would have to discontinue life support.

Desperate, her world collapsing, Isla remembered a woman she had met once at an art gala-Eleanora Beaumont. A woman of immense power and grace, who had shown a surprising interest in Isla's own embroidery work.

Swallowing her pride, Isla had secured a meeting. Eleanora was sympathetic but, above all, pragmatic. She already knew about Isla's predicament. She also knew about her grandson, Julian, and his scandalous, public affair with a socialite named Victoria Hayes, who had just made a very public suicide attempt after Julian tried to break things off. The Beaumont family needed a scandal shield.

Eleanora offered a deal. A contract. She needed a stable, respectable, and controllable wife for Julian to quiet the media storm and project an image of stability. Isla needed money.

She presented a contract. An eighty-million-dollar trust fund. In exchange, Isla would marry Julian and remain his wife for a minimum of three years, presenting a united front to the public. A specific clause stipulated that the funds would cover her mother's medical bills for life and provide enough capital to revive the family business.

Seeing no other way to save her mother, Isla had agreed. Her heart was filled with despair, but also a tiny, foolish flicker of hope. A secret hope that the handsome, distant Julian Beaumont, a man she'd admired from afar, might one day see her, might one day even grow to love her.

(Flashback ends)

The memory of that naive hope was a cruel joke now, mocking her from the past. The eighty-million-dollar contract had become an eighty-million-dollar scar.

She turned off the water, shivering in the now-cold bathroom. As she wrapped a towel around her trembling body, the bedroom door opened.

Her heart froze in her chest. Terror, pure and primal, seized her.

It was Julian. He had come back. He stood in the doorway, his eyes scanning the room until they landed on her. He'd forgotten his watch on the nightstand.

He saw her huddled on the floor, wrapped in a towel, her visible skin already showing the faint, purplish marks of his assault. For the first time, a flicker of something unreadable crossed his face. It wasn't remorse, not exactly. It was... uncertainty. Maybe even a sliver of guilt.

He cleared his throat, his voice gruff and lacking its earlier rage. "Who was the first man you were with?"Perhaps it was that tiny shred of guilt that made him start making forced, awkward conversation.

The question was so bizarre, so completely out of place, that it shocked her out of her stupor. She stared at him, bewildered. The memory of their wedding night, of him leaving her alone in this very suite, flashed in her mind.

A bitter, hysterical laugh escaped her lips, a sound that was half sob, half mockery. "You are, Julian," she said, her voice raw.

Her response, laced with raw pain and biting sarcasm, seemed to catch him completely off guard. He just stared at her, a strange conflict warring in his eyes. He opened his mouth as if to say something else, but then clamped it shut, his jaw tightening.

His moment of uncertainty was gone as quickly as it came. He strode to the nightstand, snatched his expensive watch, his movements clipped and tense.

Without another word, he turned and left for the second time that night.

Isla watched him go. The brief glimpse of something human in him gave her no comfort. It only made his cruelty more profound. The assault, coupled with the memory of why she was here, solidified a cold, hard resolve in her heart. This marriage wasn't just loveless; it was a cage.

And she was going to break free.
