In my past life, Jayden got an official death certificate from the hospital so he could deceive everyone.
Now, the clerk verified everything to be in order and stamped the certificate without hesitation, just as I had requested.
"My condolences, Miss Hanson," she said. "Here is your husband's death certificate."
With a nonchalant hum, I casually tucked the certificate into my purse.
I had only taken two steps when I heard Jesse's phone vibrating. He glanced at me nervously before hurrying into a corner to take the call.
Even from a distance, I managed to hear parts of the conversation.
"How was I supposed to know she'd be so ruthless? Your identity was revoked in the system? You're stuck at the gate and can't leave the country? Don't panic. We'll figure something out. Take care of Nel. Don't make her upset."
Jesse and Joel wore a dark expression on their faces. Jesse hung up and strode over with Joel, their hands curled into fists.
They were about to speak, but I seized the initiative first.
"Put out an announcement. Say that I have lost my husband and am now officially looking for a new husband!"
Immediately, their eyes turned red in anger.
"Lauren! Jayden just died, and you're already looking for a new husband? Are you trying to kill him all over again? All you have is that you're born in a good family, but your character is worse than a maid's! Who'd want to marry you besides us?!"
Suppressing the disgust in my heart, I glared coldly at the two angry men. "My words are law. Do it now."
Jesse and Joel exchanged a look, contempt evident in their eyes.
"If this is your way of provoking us into begging to marry you, then my apologies. Compared to Nel, you're nothing at all!"
"You want an announcement, right? Fine! One day, you'll be the one begging!"
When my father heard about the announcement, he immediately called me home. Jesse and Joel wanted to follow, but I stopped them with a raised hand.
"This is a Hanson family matter. It has nothing to do with either of you."
After being shut down again, the two stormed off in fury.
When father saw me, he let out a long sigh. "Lauren, you loved Jayden so deeply. Are you really ready to take the next step?"
When he saw me nodding, he pulled out an envelope from his drawer. "If you're sure, then I actually have someone in mind."
I didn't even ask, and simply agreed on the spot. "If it's someone that impresses you, then it's good enough for me. It's him, then."
When my father saw my decisiveness, a smile formed on his tired face. He said he would ask Shanan Cole to make his way back from abroad soon to support me as my right-hand man.
The moment I heard that name, my heart began beating wildly.
To think Shanan was my father's chosen candidate!
My father told me that Shanan had some urgent business to take care of, but he would be back in one week at the earliest. I held back the excitement inside of me and decided to give myself one week off to relax at home.
Jesse and Joel didn't come and see me, probably plotting something again. I didn't mind it, as I had some peace and quiet.
One day, I finally managed to receive confirmation of Shanan's return. I was just about to head to the airport when I saw my late husband, Jayden, standing upright at the gate of my villa.
He used to wear luxury clothes I bought for him. However, now he ended up with cheap T-shirt bought from the streets. His striking good looks were gone, and he looked utterly unremarkable.
Beside him was Nellie, who looked like she was being mistreated. Jesse and Joel were trying their best to console her.
Ah, the dead had finally resurrected from his grave!
Seemed like they couldn't leave the country and had no choice but to crawl their way back to me.
I took a deep breath and stepped forward, and spat coldly, "You're not dead, Jayden?"
Before Jayden could respond, Nellie jumped in front of him protectively. "How can you say something like that, Miss Lauren? He's your husband! Do you really wish him dead?"
I raised my eyebrow and stared pointedly at the woman who, in my past life, lived in luxury overseas off my family's money.
"Who do you think you are to raise your voice before me?" I shot.
Nellie knew she had overstepped, and quickly lowered her head.
However, Jayden immediately stepped in front of her. "She saved my life! Who are you to speak so rudely to the one who saved me?"
Jesse and Joel began to explain what had happened, claiming that Jayden had fallen off a cliff while performing a site inspection for me. He survived, but he lost his memories after knocking his head on a rock. Nellie happened to pass by and save him. Now, she was no longer just a maid for the Hanson family—she was also the savior of the Scott household.
As soon as they finished their story, Nellie shoved her purse into Jayden's hand and lifted her chin at me.
"I'm tired, Miss Hanson. I'm afraid you'll have to arrange a room for your husband's savior to stay in temporarily," she said arrogantly.
Jayden immediately escorted Nellie into the villa.
But, with a snap of my fingers, the butler immediately slammed the door in their faces.
Jayden turned to glare at me, livid. "They said you're my wife. Then my savior is yours, too! How could you show her such disrespect?"
I chuckled.
What a performance!
If I hadn't been reborn, I would have really welcomed Nellie as an honored guest!
"You may be my husband, Jayden, but in the Hanson household, I'm the only head of the family. " I said.
"Drive me to the airport right now. This is an order!"
Jayden's eyes were practically burning in rage, but Nellie tugged his sleeve at this time and subtly shook her head.
After a moment of silence, Jayden bent over and opened the door into the passenger seat.
Nellie didn't hesitate to sit inside. "I'm sorry, Miss Hanson. Jayden had just come to. As the person who saved him, I'm worried about his condition. Someone of your status won't mind, right?"
Jayden didn't even spare me a glance as he leaned in to fasten Nellie's seatbelt. Then, he opened the driver's door on his own. "If you're coming, get in."
Nellie's lips curled slightly at Jayden's icy tone toward me. I simply scoffed and got into the back seat.
These two were trying to assert their dominance, but what they didn't know was that I was on my way to welcome my new husband from abroad.
At the thought of Shanan, I let out a long sigh.
In my past life, I vowed to remain a widow for Jayden. Shanan stayed single until the end as well, and took care of me without ever asking for anything.
In the end, he turned out to be the man my father had chosen for me.
As I became somewhat nervous, the car suddenly jolted violently. Then, I heard Jayden cry out as he yanked the steering wheel, slamming the left side of our car…into an out-of-control truck!
Agonizing pain struck me, but the first words from Jayden were to ask if Nellie was alright.
Nellie was in the passenger seat, safely out of harm's way. What could be wrong with her?
I tried to reach for my phone to call 911, but I had no idea where my phone had gone during the crash.
I tried to assess my situation despite the pain, and realized my thigh was pinned under the mangled seat. An artery was also slashed open…
My blood and my life were slowly slipping away.
I was starting to black out because of the blood loss. I clutched my wound as best I could, hoping that emergency services could make it in time.
However, when the paramedics arrived, Jayden leaned out the window and shouted, "The one in the back seat isn't hurt! Don't worry about her! Save the person in the passenger seat first!"
My hand froze. Jayden's words were like knives, cutting deep into my heart. He knew I was dying, but he couldn't even bother to pretend anymore.
In the passenger's seat, Nellie kept on wailing about the pain, begging the police to break open her door first. Jayden was so anxious that he was crying, holding Nellie tightly in his arms despite his injured arm.
Seeing this, the police didn't hesitate. They circled to the rear and smashed the window, pulling me out safely. Their expressions remained chilly even when they heard Jayden's angry barks.
"If you can scream and yell, it means you're not in danger! I know you want to save your lover first, but we can't let someone in critical condition bleed out in the back!" they snarled.
Even strangers could see their relationship. How blindly must I have trusted Jayden in my past life not to notice anything at all?
When I woke up again, I was already in the hospital.
Jesse and Joel were both whispering beside my bed. "The old man doesn't know about this yet, but if he finds out Jayden crashed his car with Lauren inside, we're all doomed."
"Relax. Jayden is donating his blood to Nel right now. Once Lauren's awake, we'll let Lauren tell the old man that she was driving the car. We'll be fine, and we can also trick them and gather enough funds to pay for Nel's tuition for studying abroad."
My body was aching all over, and so was my heart.
At this time, Jayden rushed into the room. "Is she still unconscious? Get her sedated! We'll need to use her facial skin for Nel's graft."
Jesse and Joel were both instantly distressed.
"What happened to Nel? Why does she need a skin graft?"
"She's in the emergency room. I didn't see it myself, but I just heard her crying that her skin was ruined. She needed a graft."
"If it's for Nel, then let's hurry up! I've practiced Lauren's handwriting. I'll forge the signature. Here's the sedative… Force it into her."
Their words chilled me to the bone. I immediately opened my eyes and reached for the button to call for the nurse right above me.
But Jayden was even faster. He lunged forward and pinned my hand, a cruel expression on his face.
"Lauren, Nel cares a lot about her looks. This time, you must help her."
When Jesse saw what happened, he quickly forged my signature. He grabbed the milk laced with sedatives and poured it down my throat without caring about anything else.
"Lauren, why must you wake up now? Why can't you just be a donor for Nel quietly?"
I wanted to struggle, but my body was injured all over, and I was also wrapped in casts. I couldn't move at all.
They forced the milk down my throat with an icy stare before covering my mouth, stopping me from crying out. All they needed to do was wait.
I could feel my mind slowly becoming cloudy. My consciousness was slowly fading.
And then, the door to my ward was kicked open violently with a bang.
