Chapter 5

Lynn got drunk and started acting out. No one could stop her.

William could not stand the sight and carried her up the stairs.

My father sighed in disapproval, but my mother held him back while mumbling something to him.

They had waited for Lynn’s return for too long.

When William wanted to take his leave, my mother told him to stay because it was too dangerous to drive at night.

“Just stay in the guestroom tonight. After all, you’re our future son-in-law.”

She then patted his hand.

William seemed to understand her meaning, and he gestured that he would come find me later.

Why would I let him do that? He had fooled me in my last life and sold me off to an old man for just two thousand dollars.

He had also kicked my abdomen despite hearing my pleas.

My heart tugged in pain when I recalled that.

I was going to give him and Lynn a big gift tonight. I turned around and switched off the main power plug.

The house that had never experienced a black-out was now in complete darkness.

I could hear the clock ticking.

My mother told us to head to bed since the electricity went out.

It sounded like she was smiling.

I went to the pool in our garden to fish and stared at the dimmed candlelight on the second floor.

William did not come out for a long time. He had placed Lynn in my bedroom.

My fiance and my younger sister were fooling around.

A voice interrupted my thoughts.

The person standing behind me sounded angrier than I was. “Harper, do you want me to take you to catch them in the act?”

I knew this voice.

After my long wait in the village, I was used to watching the sunrise and sunset.

I was not afraid of the blinding light.

If I actually became blind, I would not have to see what was happening to me.

However, before I went blind, someone saved me.

I was shocked and my fishing rod fell into the water.

I reached out to grab it but I only grabbed a handful of mud.

The person behind me quickly took out some tissues and wiped the mud off my fingers.

His attractive voice said, “I know you’re angry. Your nails are broken. How are you going to play the piano like that?”

He understood my emotions…

He was always like that, wiping my face with a handkerchief.

He looked regretful, and his eyes were filled with pain when he looked at me.

A single drop of tear fell onto his arm.

He froze and tossed the handkerchief aside.

He met my gaze. “Let me bring your parents to see what those adulterers are doing.”

Chapter 6

My fingernails were covered in black mud, and it was hard to wipe them clean.

Even if I exposed the two now, they would not be embarrassed.

My mother might even praise William for having the ability to tell the difference between the princess and the pauper!

I gave Joe Anderson an address, and he immediately disappeared into the darkness.

Joe was my bodyguard. When my father saw everyone else get a bodyguard, he hired one for me too.

I did not expect him to be the only loyal one out of the entire family.

The night ended as the sun rose.

It was time.

I walked back into the living room when my parents were already having breakfast. They were a little shocked to see me.

“Harper, why aren’t you asleep?”

My mother passed me a cup of tea. “Your hands are so cold. Did you not get a good sleep last night?”

How could I get a good night’s sleep knowing my fiance was sleeping with my younger sister?

“Lynn has finally found her real parents. I was too happy on her behalf to sleep. But why isn’t she here for breakfast?”

My mother was momentarily stunned when I asked that. She covered up by saying that Lynn had too much to drink, so she should sleep in. She told me she would bring me shopping later.

It was obvious that she was trying to distract me.

I simply ate some bread when I heard a slight commotion at the door.

Before I could stand up, I saw a woman dressed in a patterned-shirt barge into our house with her feet covered in mud.

When she saw my well-dressed mother, she was momentarily stunned, then grabbed my mother’s hand.

“So you’re my in-law! It’s fine for Lynn to not call me mother anymore, but she should still take care of her kids…”

When the newcomer saw that my mother was too shocked to reply, she pushed my mother aside and started yelling in a loud voice.

“Lynn, I’m here to see you! Lynn, stop hiding from us…”
