The Substitute Bride's 51% Revenge Chapter 1

Julian slid the annulment papers across the mahogany table.

Right in front of our entire family on Christmas Eve.

"Sign it," he ordered, not even looking at me.

Beside him, my half-sister Isabella flashed the massive ten-carat diamond I was never allowed to wear.

For three years, I was the stand-in bride.

I slept alone, wore Isabella's discarded size-five ring, and endured their sneers.

I signed the papers without a single tear.

I packed only one thing: an old wooden box from my late grandmother.

Nobody in the Sinclair family ever asked for my grandmother's maiden name.

If they had, they would have known who really owned them.

Six months later, their lavish wedding was live-streaming to eighty million viewers.

Right before the vows, my lawyer walked onto the stage.

He held a trust document proving someone owned fifty-one percent of Sinclair Holdings.

Me.

The thick stack of divorce papers slid across the polished mahogany table, the sharp edge scraping against my crystal wine glass with a high, grating screech.

Julian didn't even look up as his finger pinned the document in front of me. He simply lifted his scotch, taking a slow sip while staring at the snow falling outside the window.

"Sign it." His voice held no emotion.

Across the table, Richard drummed his knuckles against the wood. The heavy gold of his signet ring clacked rhythmically, echoing in the cavernous dining room.

"I told you three years ago, Cora." My father-in-law curled his lip into a sneer. "Isabella is too precious to be tied down by duty. You were only ever a substitute. A placeholder until she was ready to return. Now she is back, and it is time for you to get out."

I stared at the bold letters at the top of the page. Marriage Annulment Agreement.

Isabella shifted in the seat beside Julian, resting her chin on his broad shoulder. A reckless laugh slipped from her lips, bright and cutting.

"Don't be so harsh, Richard." She traced the rim of Julian's glass. "Cora kept the seat warm. Even if it was just the guest room."

Julian finally shifted his gaze, looking down at Isabella. The rigid line of his jaw softened. "She knew the terms."

"Did I?" I kept my voice steady. "I recall vows. I recall a church."

Richard scoffed. "You recall a transaction. We needed a wife on paper to satisfy the board. You needed money for that crumbling orphanage your grandmother left behind. The contract is up."

"The board wanted stability." I looked directly at Julian. "Are you going to tell them you are swapping one Vance sister for another like a used car? Or should I?"

Julian's jaw tightened. He did not answer. He never did when the truth cost him something.

"That is what I thought," I said. I turned away from the altar, my heels echoing across the cold marble. At the doors, I paused and looked back at Richard one last time. "You wanted me gone. Consider me gone. But you should have read the prenuptial clause my grandmother insisted on. You will be hearing from me very soon."

I walked out into the snow without a coat, and I did not look back.
