Chapter 1

On the Goldman heir's wedding day, I take a small bite out of a piece of cake because I am hungry from waiting too long at the ceremony.

But my fiancee, Sheryl Wilson, slaps me in the face immediately.

"You really are shameless! How could you eat in an occasion like this?"

Dazed from the slap, I look at the other guests, who are staring at us at the moment. Having tasted copper in my mouth, I turn on my heel and approach the heir with a plate in my hands.

"The cake's pretty delicious. Do you want a slice?"

Sheryl started to panic. She's about to drag me away when the groom of the wedding takes a small bite out of the same slice.

He remarks coolly, "It really is tasty. I'll have my men prepare 100 slices of cake for the woman who slapped you just now."

The moment I stepped through the door, I spotted my wife, Sheryl Wilson, who was supposed to be working overtime that day. She was holding on to her assistant, Hunter Colton's arm.

Sheryl didn't look nervous at all when we made eye contact. She simply stared at me and said, "You don't fit in at these sorts of events, Felix. Don't look at me like that. Just stay in a corner later and don't embarrass yourself!"

"It's Mr. Luther's first time attending this type of banquet," Hunter chimed in mockingly. "He doesn't know the rules. That's why he's dressed so casually. Just stay out of our way. Don't embarrass Ms. Wilson."

I smiled at them and didn't say a single word as I made my way over to a corner of the hall.

The truth was, I didn't see Sheryl at first. The very first thing that caught my attention was the feast that was spread out on the table.

It was already 12:00 pm when I arrived at the hall. I was starving, so I served myself a small slice of cake and grabbed a glass of white wine to pair with it.

The cake was delicious, and I was tempted to have a second slice after finishing my first.

Just then, Sheryl stormed over to me and slapped the cake right out of my hands.

I was stunned. Before I could snap back to my senses, Sherly slapped me hard across the face.

The sound of the slap ringing through the air caught the attention of all the guests in the hall.

"Have you lost your mind?" Sheryl roared. "Didn't you eat at home? Must you embarrass yourself in front of everyone here? Do you even know where you are right now? Who gave you permission to eat the cake?"

I was still stunned, but she just continued berating me.

I touched my face and pressed my tongue against my inner cheek. I then let out a derisive scoff.

Sheryl was my fiancee, but she didn't respect me at all. She was even daring enough to slap me during such an important event.

I took a deep breath and looked at her, saying, "So what if I ate the cake? That's what we're supposed to do, right? It's not just a decoration."

Sheryl turned indignant upon listening to my retort.

Hunter had rushed over to us by then. "Why did you do that, Felix? You're not supposed to eat that, no matter how hungry you are! We're at Mr. Goldman's wedding banquet for crying out loud!"

Sheryl was wearing a stormy expression. "Apologize to Mr. Goldman right now!"

She then forcefully dragged me around the hall, but she couldn't find who she was looking for, even after she searched the entire place.

I shrugged and said, "I'm sure Mr. Goldman won't do anything to me just because I ate a tiny slice of cake. Besides, aren't we supposed to enjoy ourselves during a banquet? Why are you getting so angry at me over a slice of cake? How dare you slap me because of it! What do you take me for, Sheryl?"

Sheryl became infuriated. "How dare you talk to me like that!"

She scoffed before continuing, "I underestimated you, Felix, but it doesn't matter. I want you to leave right now. Don't linger here, or I'm going to break up with you! You won't be able to mooch off of me then!"

As I looked between Sheryl and Hunter, who stood nearby, I was suddenly struck by a realization.

"Fine then. I'd like to see exactly how you plan to deal with me."

I shook her off after I was done speaking. I grabbed a plate and placed a slice of cake on it before walking over to Shawn Goldman, who was standing nearby.

I was going to show Sheryl just how outrageous I could get.

Panic gripped Sheryl as she watched me walk away. She lifted up her skirt and chased after me, hissing, "What do you think you're doing? Talk to me!"

"I'm going to show you who's boss, of course!"

"Stop right there, Felix!"

Sheryl kept her voice lowered, not daring to shout at me. There were too many guests in the hall, so she didn't dare raise her voice. On top of that, she was worried about offending the Goldman family. She wouldn't be able to explain herself if that happened.

Hunter was also hot on our heels. He grabbed me and held me back right when I was a mere few feet away from Shawn.

"Don't cross the line, Felix. Today is the Goldman family's big day. Go ahead and sign your own death sentence for all I care, but don't drag Ms. Wilson into your mess.

"Ms. Wilson prepared for a long time for today's opportunity. If the partnership falls through, she won't be able to continue doing business in this city!"

Was Sheryl actually hoping to use the Goldman family as a stepping stone when her own company was so tiny?

Chapter 2

I scoffed and asked, "Do you really believe that the Goldman family will want to work with Sheryl just because she talked to them? What can she even offer the wealthiest family in the city?"

Sheryl had caught up to us by then. "I'm warning you, Felix. Don't cause a scene!" she hissed fiercely. "I'll give you 500 dollars. Call a cab right now and go home! You can order delivery for whatever you want to eat!"

She then transferred 500 dollars into my bank account.

I nearly burst out laughing when the notification popped up on my phone. Did Sheryl really think that I needed her money?

The handprint on my cheek was still stinging terribly. I couldn't help but wonder what made her assume that I had only shown up at the banquet to cause a scene.

I ignored Sheryl's orders for me to leave. Instead, I turned around and continued marching toward Shawn.

Did Sheryl really think that she could change my mind with a mere 500 dollars? What a joke!

Sheryl chased after me and roared, "Stop right there, Felix!"

Her raised voice drew the attention of the guests around us, but I wasn't going to let anyone stop me.

Sheryl was beyond furious. Casting aside the image she was trying so desperately to uphold, she lunged and grabbed me. She then raised her hand, looking as if she was going to slap me again.

I grabbed her wrist before she could slap me, saying, "You're behaving quite barbarically, Ms. Wilson. Are you really going to slap me when you're dressed so nicely? Are you sure you want to act like a madwoman in front of the Goldmans?"

Sheryl gritted her teeth. "Have you lost your mind, Felix? How dare you speak to me like that!"

Hunter had also caught up to us by then. "Don't waste your breath on him, Sheryl. He wouldn't even be able to set foot in this hall if not for you. Just order the security guards to throw him out!"

Sheryl's eyes lit up. She was just about to call the security guards when I freed myself from her grasp and strode over to Shawn.

Sheryl was so shocked that she didn't dare breathe too loudly. She hurried over to us and said, "I'm so sorry, Mr. Goldman. This bastard only offended you because he doesn't know any better. He's totally uncultured, so I hope you don't take his words or actions to heart."

Shawn looked at Sheryl curiously before asking, "Who is this man to you?"

Sheryl was momentarily stunned before she stuttered, "H-He's my friend!"

"A friend?" Shawn repeated.

"She was my fiancee a few seconds ago, but we're no longer engaged as of this moment. We're just normal friends," I declared loudly.

"Good. You still have your wits about you," Shawn said, nodding.

Sheryl was extremely nervous. Her face had twisted into an upset expression, not understanding what Shawn was talking about.

So, she simply nodded and said, "It's nice to meet you, Mr. Goldman. I'm Sheryl Wilson from Peak Corporation. I've contacted your assistant before. I—"

Shawn interrupted her by raising his hand. "I have no plans to talk business today."

Sheryl stood awkwardly to the side. She was nearly overwhelmed with the urge to tear me apart when she noticed the mirth sparkling in my eyes.

In the past, whenever she had to meet a client, I would always help her find out their preferences. My information made it easy for her to find common ground with them before she moved on to her real goal.

However, I had no plans to help Sheryl this time, so she could only glare at me.

Hunter squeezed himself into our conversation, eager to prove himself.

"It's your big day today, Mr. Goldman, so you shouldn't let someone unpresentable and insignificant ruin your fun. We'll throw him out right now!"

He made a gesture and yelled, "Guards!"

Shawn simply glanced at Hunter.

When the security guards remained at their stations, Hunter shouted again, "Guards!"

I laughed and took a bite out of the cake.

"Stop shouting. Do you really think that you can order the Goldman family's men around? How embarrassing. You really do see yourself as an equal among these powerful people, don't you?"

Hunter's expression turned steely as he clenched his fists.

Meanwhile, Sheryl glared at me fiercely. She was just about to start berating me when Shawn spoke first.

"Does it taste good?" Shawn asked.

I nodded. "It's delicious."

I then brought the cake close to Shawn's lips and asked, "Would you like a bite?"

Sheryl was absolutely stupefied by my actions. She grabbed me and hissed, "Have you lost your mind?"

She then turned to Shawn and said, "Don't mind him, Mr. Goldman. He's got some screws loose in his head. I'll get him to leave right now!"

Chapter 3

To Sheryl's shock, Shawn accepted the plate of cake from me and took a big bite out of it.

She stared at him in disbelief before looking at me, her eyes darting rapidly between the two of us.

"Mr. Goldman—"

Shawn arched his brow and clapped me on the back. "It's good. Anyway, have fun."

He nodded at me before he took his leave.

Sheryl sighed in relief before turning to look at me. "You're lucky that Mr. Goldman's a gentleman. That's why he didn't lose his temper at you. Get out of here right now! You've already more than enough to humiliate us!"

Hunter burst into laughter. "Don't admonish him, Sheryl. He totally did that on purpose. Apparently, Mr. Goldman has certain 'hobbies'. He was just catering to Mr. Goldman's preferences."

The other guests immediately pinned me with strange looks.

"Is it true?"

"That's impossible! He looks like a pretty upstanding guy."

"Mr. Goldman must be desperate if he's willing to settle for someone like him."

A look of utter disdain crossed Sheryl's face.

"Why did I get engaged to someone like you, Felix? I'm calling off the engagement! I want to break up with you!" she said as she removed her ring and threw it at me.

I picked up the eight-carat diamond ring that I had meticulously designed myself. Creating the ring was the first time I had poured so much effort into something.

Meanwhile, the ring that I was wearing was identical to the one that Shawn wore. Our respective family crests were engraved on it. They looked similar, but there were some minuscule differences. However, there was no way that Sheryl and the others knew that.

I arched my brow at her and asked, "Are you sure?"

Hunter forced himself into our conversation, saying, "Of course she's sure! Although you managed to catch Mr. Goldman's attention through unscrupulous means, you're not going to get very far. After all, Mr. Goldman is getting married today. He'll discard you soon enough."

He then smugly wrapped his arm around Sheryl's waist, not even bothering to pretend that they weren't together anymore.

The guests began to whisper among themselves.

"I knew something was amiss when I saw him for the first time. He always showed up at Mr. Goldman's company."

"I can't believe that he shares that type of relationship with Mr. Goldman!"

"The bride is so unlucky."

I couldn't hold myself back anymore as their speculation became progressively more ridiculous.

"I don't care that you want to break up with me, Sheryl. But don't forget that we're in the Goldman family's territory now. If you badmouth Mr. Goldman, you're going to have to pay the consequences of your actions."

Sheryl scoffed. "What an arrogant thing to say. If the bride learns of your existence, you're the one who's going to get punished, no? Well, I'm interested to see just who has the guts to teach me a lesson for what I just said!"

The words had just left her lips when a voice boomed behind us.

"I do!"

Surprised gasps erupted all across the hall.

"Mr. Goldman is here!"

Sheryl was momentarily stunned. She immediately presented herself with a refined demeanor when she noticed Shawn and his bride, Katie Irwin, approaching us.

"You can't keep protecting him like this, Mr. Goldman. The others might not know about the nature of your relationship with him, but I can see it clearly with my own eyes!"

I couldn't help but snicker as Sheryl continued to blurt out her misassumptions.

"And what do you see exactly? Your own vision is tainted because you're no saint either."

"Are you still going to deny it, Felix?" Sheryl asked, raising her voice. "Our engagement was just a cover. That's why you never touched me. Furthermore, we've never worn couple rings, but you're obviously wearing the same one as Mr. Goldman. How are you going to explain that?

"Yet you dare to insist that there's nothing going on between the two of you. Your relationship with Mr. Goldman is so obvious, but I just don't want to say it aloud. I feel repulsed just thinking about it!

"Oh, by the way, I'm not talking about you, Mr. Goldman. My criticisms are all targeted at Felix. He's just too shameless!"

Shawn arched his brow and asked, "What exactly is the nature of my relationship with Felix? Why don't you enlighten me? After all, I have no idea what other scandalous relationship I could possibly have with my nephew except for a familial bond."
