Chapter 3

Carmela Greco POV:

Vince's study was the one room in the compound I was forbidden to enter. The door was always locked. The security camera in the hallway was always active. For five years, I had respected this boundary the way a good future don's wife should.

Tonight, I picked the lock with a hairpin and a credit card.

It took me twelve minutes. My bandaged hands made everything slower. But the guards were at their posts, the household staff had gone home, and Vince was at a Commission dinner that would keep him occupied until at least midnight.

The study smelled of leather, old paper, and the faint, metallic tang of gun oil. The walls were lined with bookshelves that held more ledgers than literature. A massive mahogany desk dominated the center of the room. Behind it, a painting of Vince's grandfather--the original Vincenzo Moretti--glared down at me with judgmental eyes.

I started with the filing cabinets.

The first drawer was financial records. Offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, shell companies in Delaware, real estate holdings in cities I'd never heard of. I photographed everything.

The second drawer was correspondence. Letters from politicians. Thank-you notes from judges. A Christmas card from the police commissioner. I photographed those too.

The third drawer was different. It was locked separately, with a combination safe built into the cabinet itself. I tried the family birthday. The date the Moretti Group was founded. The address of the first family home.

Then I tried the date of the first hit I knew about--the one from 2011 that the Rossi family had been holding over Vince's head. September 14, 2011.

The safe clicked open.

Inside was a single leather-bound ledger, its pages yellowed with age. The first entry was dated 1972. It was written in Vince's grandfather's handwriting, a neat, precise script that listed names, dates, and locations. Beside each name was a single letter: *T*--terminated.

The death list. Fifty-one years of Moretti family executions, documented in meticulous detail. The victims. The dates. The locations of the bodies.

My hands were shaking. Not from the nerve damage. From the weight of what I was holding. This ledger was a map to every unsolved murder connected to the Moretti family for half a century. It was the key to dismantling their entire organization.

I photographed every page. Then I put the ledger back exactly where I found it.

As I was relocking the safe, my phone buzzed. A text from Vince: *"Dinner running late. Don't wait up."*

I smiled. He had no idea that while he was eating veal with the Commission, his future wife was systematically dismantling his empire from the inside of his own study.

I relocked the door, reset the security camera feed to a loop of the empty hallway, and was in bed with the lights off by the time Vince's key turned in the front door.

He climbed into bed beside me, smelling of wine and cigar smoke. Within minutes, he was snoring.

I lay awake in the darkness, the photographs of fifty-one years of murder burning in the cloud storage that only I could access. I had gone from being a broken bride to the most dangerous woman in New York in the space of three days.

Tomorrow, I was supposed to walk down an aisle and become Carmela Moretti. Instead, I was going to become a federal witness.
