Chapter 3

The two bodyguards, built like brick walls in tailored suits, stopped a few feet from Clare. Their voices were flat, devoid of emotion. "Ma'am, move your vehicle. Now."

Clare ignored them. Her gaze was locked on the tinted rear window of the Rolls-Royce. She knew he was in there, watching.

"I'm here to see Edward Carlisle," she said. Her voice was quiet but carried with an unnatural clarity over the hum of the engines. "Tell him Clare Beaumont is here."

The name clearly meant nothing to them. One guard spoke discreetly into his wrist. The silence stretched.

"Mr. Carlisle doesn't know you," the first guard said, his patience wearing thin. "Please leave, or we will be forced to call the police for obstructing his passage."

A cold smile touched Clare's lips. She had anticipated this. She took a step closer. "Then tell him it's about the 'Midnight Sun.' The yacht party, a few weeks ago. If he's forgotten, I can help him remember."

Inside the car, Edward Carlisle, who had been resting with his eyes closed, opened them. The words, relayed through the tiny earpiece he wore, cut through his thoughts. His ice-blue pupils contracted slightly.

He remembered. The scent of gardenias and champagne. A woman with green eyes and golden hair who had slipped into his suite, a bold, beautiful trespasser in his carefully controlled world.

Felix Stone, sitting in the front passenger seat, turned to look at his boss, his expression one of mild surprise.

Edward was silent for a long moment. Then, a quiet command into his own comms. "Let her approach."

The bodyguards stepped aside, creating a path.

Clare straightened her back, squared her shoulders, and walked. She moved past the guards, past the lead car, her focus entirely on the Rolls-Royce that was the heart of this procession of power.

The rear door opened with a soft, expensive click. It revealed the man inside, seated like a monarch on a throne. He wore a dark grey suit, custom-made, that fit his frame perfectly. Even sitting down, he radiated an aura of immense, suffocating pressure.

"Get in," he said. His voice was like his eyes, cold and without a trace of warmth.

Clare slid onto the plush leather seat. The door closed, sealing them in a capsule of silence and the faint, clean scent of woodsmoke and leather that clung to him. It made the air feel thin.

"What do you want?" he asked, his voice cutting straight to the point. His eyes were like scalpels, dissecting her.

She wasn't intimidated. Not anymore. Desperation had burned that out of her. She met his gaze and pulled the doctored pregnancy test from her small purse. She didn't hand it to him. She placed it on the empty seat between them.

"I'm pregnant," she said, each word a carefully placed stone.

His gaze dropped to the test, to the two stark red lines, then lifted back to her face. His eyes were dark, dangerous.

"And?" He arched an eyebrow, a flicker of amusement in his tone. "You believe this has something to do with me?"

"Doesn't it, Mr. Carlisle?" Clare shot back, her voice steady. "I haven't been with another man since that night."

The air in the car grew thick, heavy. Felix, in the front seat, seemed to have stopped breathing.

"My lawyer will contact you," Edward said coolly, as if discussing a line item on a balance sheet. "You'll be given a generous settlement to handle the... complication."

"I don't want a settlement," Clare interrupted, her heart pounding against her ribs. This was it. The moment of truth. "I want you to marry me."

For the first time, a genuine expression of surprise crossed Edward Carlisle's face. He stared at her, truly seeing her, as if reassessing a miscalculated asset. His mind instantly went to his grandfather, to Augustus Carlisle and the suffocating pressure of the arranged marriage he was being forced into.

"And what makes you think," he said, his voice laced with contempt, "that I would marry a woman with... no background?"

"My background is right here," Clare said, tapping a finger on the armrest next to the test. "This child is a Carlisle heir. Or would you prefer I take this news directly to your grandfather? To Mr. Augustus Carlisle?"

The name hung in the air, instantly dropping the temperature in the car by ten degrees. The amusement in Edward's eyes vanished, replaced by a glacial cold.

He leaned forward. The sheer force of his presence made Clare instinctively shrink back against the seat. He caught her chin between his thumb and forefinger, his grip firm, forcing her to meet his gaze.

"You have courage," he said, his words clipped and precise. "But how do you prove this child is mine?"

His grip was painful, but she didn't flinch. She met his stare with one of her own. "Take me for a paternity test. Right now." She was betting everything on the fact that he couldn't afford for this to become a public spectacle.

He stared at her for a full ten seconds, his blue eyes searching hers for any sign of a bluff. Then he released her and leaned back.

He spoke to the driver, his voice once again a flat, emotionless command.

"Turn around. We're going to Dr. Sterling's clinic."
