At the grave stone of her parents, Millicent wept, reliving again the events that took place in her pack, eleven years ago.
'I shall bring you justice!' she said as her tears dropped on the grave. 'I shall make sure, Sylvester and any other person responsible for your deaths pay for this. I shall avenge you! she howled loudly, looking up as she howled the vow.
After that she stood and Cara walked her back home.
'Don't you want to see the pack?' she asked.
'Not now!' Millicent said, bitterness in her heart. Old wounds had just been reopened.
'Good decision! Remember the vow you just howled to your parents and do not grow faint in it's execution', Cara advised. 'Also, there is a lot more I have to tell you. Things that you are not aware of but should know. I shall tell you when you come back victorious from the attack on Sylvester', she called the name like it was a bitter taste in her mouth.
'I shall be back and I shall expect you to tell me all that you know!' Millicent said not sounding like herself at all. A change seem to have taken place in her.
****
Millicent went to see Alpha Blake. 'I am ready Alpha to avenge my parents', she said.
'That's good. I was thinking you were never going to make up your mind!' the Alpha said. 'I have already gathered an army and asked them to get prepared for the signal from me. We shall take the Moon Ville Pack unawares, you shall draw us a map of the whole pack with the help of our architectures'.
'Anything I can do to further this cause, I shall do it!' Millicent said, with grim determination.
' Good! There is something you must know', Alpha Blake said.
'What's that?'
'Someone else would be joining us. Someone you know!' he said.
'Anyone, provided he will not become a liability', she said.
'She will be no liability. She is as determined as you are to humble Sylvester!' Alpha Blake said and called, 'Come out now!'
'Good day, Millicent!'
Millicent turned to see Cathania facing her.
'You?' she exclaimed. Millicent had thought that nothing could shock her anymore considering all that she's had to go through but she had not expected to see Cathania in this place and in a position to harm Alpha Sylvester.
'Yes, me!' Cathania replied unflinchingly.
'How can you possibly trust her?' Millicent asked looking from Cathania to Alpha Blake.
'Just as I trust you!' he replied smiling.
' Her case is different. She is the lover of Alpha Sylvester and might even end up being his Luna!' Millicent protested.
'Sylvester paraded her as his chosen mate, used and dumped her. He kicked her out because of you. How is her case any different from yours?' he asked. 'In any case, her father has promised us his army to help us in this attack.
'I am not going on any mission with her!' she protested. 'I cannot trust her nor her father for that matter. She has never given me any reason to. She is a back stabber! What if she cuts or claws me down instead of fighting with those she claims she wants to fight? It will make way for her to be the Luna, don't you think? Destroying the opposition...'
'Sylvester wronged her by dumping her for a younger, more beautiful female than her when she has loved him all her life, and you don't think she has a reason to want revenge? You know what they say, hell hath no fury than a woman bla bla bla', he started. 'The same man destroyed your pack, murdered your parents and the possible heir to the Crescent Pack throne, captured and Maltreated you for many years. Both your fathers are my friends and I owe it to them to avenge their daughters. So, you see, princess, you are either in or out. If you have a problem with her, you can deal with that later. For this operation, Cathania stays!' he concluded, and heaved a breath.
Millicent knew that she could not take Sylvester down on her own. She needed all the help she could get, and if making a few compromises would help her achieve her aim, why not? But she was determined to keep an eye on Cathania.
'Since you are determined that she joins us, is she aware of our agreement?' she asked.
'What agreement?' Cathania asked.
'None of the Alphas of Moon Ville Pack should be killed. Sylvester is to be captured. I want to have him in custody and the courtesy to torture him myself, paying him back in kind and doing to him as I deem fit afterwards!' Millicent explained to her.
Cathania looked from one to the other questioningly. Alpha Blake nodded imperceptibly.
'Right!' Cathania said.
'Also, Alpha Blake, I know you have spoken at length about how Sylvester has wronged the both of us and how you wish to help us with our vengeance mission, but that is not all, is it? Because, I don't believe that is the only reason you are doing this.' Millicent said. 'So what's the catch in all this? Because there is a catch? What will you benefit from helping us?' she emphasized.
'What do you mean?' he asked annoyed.
'I mean that you have been friends with the Merryweathers for a long time. They are not your enemies, at least that is what you have led me to believe. What I don't understand, in as much as I am grateful for your assistance, is why you would want to stage an attack on your friend'.
'I only want to help my friends, I hate injustice and I act against it no matter the person involved and you'd better believe it!' he said annoyed at Millicent's exasperating attitude. The female was becoming very annoying. How could he tell her about Magdalene?
'Forget about my annoying attitude!' Millicent said seriously.
Alpha Blake could not believe his ears. Her words could not mean what he was assuming, could it? But her next words confirmed his suspicions.
'Who is Magdalene and what does Sylvester have to do with her?'
'You can read minds!' he observed flatly.
'Yes, I can. And I want to know what grievance you hold against them. We are supposed to be a team and should therefore be open with one another!'
'Sylvester betrayed me with a female called Magdalene, and that's all you need to know for now. Too much information may prove to be detrimental to our mission. I shall tell you the complete story after the mission!
Wow, so Millicent could read minds? Cathania thought. I'd better be careful with my thoughts when I am around her. I do not want her learning all my secrets.
'What secrets do you not want me to learn, Cathania?' Millicent asked. Cathania started, then, 'Right! You read minds!' she muttered and walked away from her.
When they were alone, Millicent felt the need to make sure that Alpha Blake knew she was serious about her condition.
'Alpha, I am indeed grateful for this opportunity you are giving me to avenge my parents but I want to be sure that we understand each other when I said, Sylvester is not to be killed but be captured'.
'We have already agreed on that. You are one troublesome female!
'Also, no harm should come on Christopher!'
'Ah! You mean your chosen -fated mate?' he smiled knowingly.
'My ...what?'
'Chosen - fated mate! Having more than one fated mate, you made your choice. And that was why you allowed the one you have chosen to claim you!'
Millicent was so shocked, she could not utter any word.
'No words? I could smell Christopher on you the first day we met at the Blood Moon Pack'.
Millicent's mouth formed a circle as she mouthed, 'Oh!' her cheeks heated.
'But while we are having this discussion, I must tell you that in a war, no one can determine the outcome. I might not want to harm anyone but end up doing the opposite. I could not possibly allow myself to be cut down or captured because I do not want to harm a certain someone. Remember the Merryweather twins are a very powerful duo Alphas'.
Millicent considered that and had to agree with him.
'But you can incapacitate him without killing him!' she said.
'We are in a war, princess. All I can promise is that I'll try!' Alpha Blake said, trying very hard not to have any thoughts while near her.
Millicent wanted to say more but thought better of it and walked with him to the group of warriors who were going to stage the attack with them and who had been waiting for their instructions for a while now.
Alphas Christopher and Sylvester were having a meeting with the Chief and the council of elders, when a gamma rushed in with a shocking announcement!
'My Alphas, Chief, Elders, we are under attack!'
At once, everyone stood and the Alphas howled the battle call, to alert the other warriors who may not be aware of the attack. Then taking their weapons, they rushed out.
'Who is the fool who dares to attack the Moon Ville pack?' Alpha Sylvester howled.
'Who have we offended this time?' Alpha Christopher thought. 'Has Alpha Blake got wind of the fact that I have found out his secret and therefore decided to attack us before we attack him? 'Well, only one way to find out!' he said aloud as though in response to Alpha Sylvester's question.
They rushed to the battle zone and there he was, Alpha Blake like Alpha Christopher had suspected.
They had already started fighting the warriors, after getting in with Millicent's influence.
'You can let us in, we are here to meet with the Alphas. There is an important information they need to know about!' Millicent said, smiling sweetly at them.
'That's correct', Cathania added. 'Sylvester and Christopher are not aware we were on our way, else you would have been alerted!'
'Moreover, I need to see them. I heard they've been looking for me', Millicent said, shrugging, so as not to seem to anxious to get in.
The guards were sceptical but seeing both Millicent and Cathania, they had relented thinking both Alphas would be happy to see the return of their fated mate, Millicent.
Something put them on their guard, though. They caught sight of the weapons the visitors hadn't on them and the size of the warriors was intimating and they thought, 'What kind of meeting would warrant bringing these number of warriors and weapons?' They grew alarmed. But before they could question the visitors further, Alpha Blake killed a guard and the others fell into the war mode, howling for other warriors to come join in the battle. Someone was sent to alert the Alphas...
Christopher saw the way Millicent was fighting and could not believe his eyes. That surely wasn't Millicent, fighting like a trained warrior!
'What is she doing, here?' he thought and rephrased it, 'What is she doing fighting us?'
While he was distracted at the sight of his long lost love, Sylvester, though also shocked to see both Millicent and Cathania fighting them, understood their grievance. He recovered fast and howled very loudly, attracting the attention of Alpha Blake, who leapt towards him as Alpha Sylvester also leapt towards him and the battle raged on with them fighting with both their weapons and claws.
Alpha Christopher was confused. How could he fight his own love, the female who had given him sleepless night by her absence? And why had Millicent felt the need to fight them? After what they shared, couldn't she have forgotten any thoughts of vengeance? The thought that Millicent had led him on and then chosen vengeance over him twisted his heart and his wolf wriggled in immense pain.
'I have to push the lover side of me to one side and be the Alpha now! I need to protect my people!' Christopher thought and quickly went into action, taking on, the Alpha of the Blood Moon pack who had come to assist his friend. Blake really came prepared.
'Hia, hia', went the noise in the arena and the fighting raged on.
'Hoooo, hooo', went the howling of the warriors.
Though caught unawares, the Moon Ville Pack was showing that they were great fighters. Alot of the warriors from the Moonlight pack lay bleeding on the floor.
Alpha Blake was not finding it easy fighting with Alpha Sylvester, infact he was being over powered, both of them were bloodied and Millicent looked at Sylvester and prayed that he should collapse so that Blake wouldn't have any excuse to kill him. She was not willing to kill him because of Christopher. But he had to be thought a lesson. She did not want to look at Christopher again so that she would not lose her resolve or become weak. The first look she had taken had left her shaken, causing a pang in her heart and she had quickly looked away, vowing not to steal another glance at him.
'Wow, both your women are fighting against you, Sylvester, are you not ashamed that you are not male enough for them?' he taunted as they fought.
'They are only misguided and you must also have brain washed them, but I assure you, they will come back to their senses, soon enough and return you the favour', Alpha Sylvester answered chuckling as he clawed him on the shoulder.
Alpha Blake winced , 'Ouch!' he exclaimed.
'What's that?' Sylvester asked. 'A real male will not shout out in pain due to a little injury such as this in battle. You must be growing too old for this. Maybe you should retire!'
Blake was enraged and started fighting furiously. 'You have offended lots of people and it will be a favour to them if I killed you and that is what I intend to do today!' he said through his teeth.
Alpha Christopher was also not having a smooth time with Alpha Martins of the Blood Moon Pack.
'You are just as shady as your friend. Little wonder you have come to assist him, fight a pack that has done both of you no wrong!' Alpha Christopher said to him. 'You must know that you have already lost this battle and shall be humiliated!'
' Do not count your chicks before they're hatched', Alpha Martins replied. 'The battle is not over yet...'
Both of them were bloodied and Alpha Martins was fighting dirty. Christopher started having the upper hand once he allowed himself to shut off all thoughts of Millicent from his mind and focus on the fight at hand.
Soon Martins was on the floor wriggling. Looking round, Alpha Christopher leapt to go and assist his brother, Alpha Sylvester.
'You are the person who killed our parents. You hired and mobilized rogues to do your dirty work for you and yet you have the guts to stage an attack on us?' Christopher said as he got to where Blake was fighting with Sylvester.
'Oh, I thought as much', Blake responded smirking smugly. 'It was you who sent those fools to come investigate the matter. You have made a grave mistake. You should have let sleeping dogs lie!' Blake concluded, laughing at him mockingly.
Alpha Sylvester was so shocked at what he just heard that he did what he normally didn't do in wars, his reflexes became slow as he looked towards Millicent, who had also stopped fighting when she heard what Christopher had howled about Blake's involvement in the deaths of their parents. She instantly perceived even before she read his thoughts that Blake hadn't planned on sparing Sylvester and now that Christopher knew his secret, he wouldn't spare him as well. 'What have I done?' she thought wildly. She leapt to where the Alphas were.
Alpha Blake saw Sylvester slow down his attack from shock and took it as an opportunity to finish him off. He never planned to spare Sylvester, he only agreed to it so the fool, Millicent could come with them, he was hoping her presence would cause both Alphas to be less focused on the war.
He raised his spear and drove with all his might into Alpha Sylvester but noticing his intent, Alpha Christopher pushed Sylvester away, coming in front of Alpha Blake and the spear found its way into Alpha Christopher, and he staggered and fell just as Millicent reached them.
Her heart thumping painfully, Millicent caught Christopher before he could hit the ground and both fell due to Christopher's awesome weight, with Millicent making sure he fell on her rather than the ground.
Holding him tightly to herself, praying fervently that he'll be alright, the scene at her birth pack, where she held her dying father while the battle raged on, replayed before her eyes. A sense of Deja Vu filled her. Was history repeating itself? Was she going to lose the one she loves yet again?
'Christopher! My love! Stay with me!' she said, smiling encouragingly, though her heart was aching terribly. 'What have I done?' were the words that kept screaming in her head.
Christopher looked at her and nodded. 'My Luna!' he breathed, lifting his hand to touch her cheek.
Millicent sniffed back the tears that seem to be choking her. All the same, a single one still escaped and slipped down her cheek into Christopher's hand where it still rested on her cheek and he wiped it from her cheek tenderly. 'I knew you would come back to me!'
'Of course, why wouldn't I? Nothing could keep me away from you!' she choked, sniffed and added, 'Why did you have to allow yourself get injured?'
'My brother would have suffered the hit if I had not saved him. It was my duty as the elder twin to protect him!'
Millicent nodded. Christopher was so honourable but she wished he had not been hit. She looked at the spear protruding from his side and reached a decision. 'This is going to hurt but it is better out than in you, my love', she said, breaking the sharp, pointed edge of the spear and pulling at it, wishing there was a way it would not hurt him but knowing there wasn't.
Samuel, Alpha Christopher's Beta cut down the warriors he had been fighting with and kept on cutting down others as he ran to his Alpha when he saw him fall. He got there just as Millicent pulled the spear away from inside Christopher.
'My Alpha', Samuel said. 'I am here. You'll be okay'.
Millicent tore a part of her cloth and pressed it to his wound, trying to stay the blood flow. 'Take him inside and stay with him. Call the doctor to attend swiftly to his wounds!' Millicent ordered, trying not to break down. She could not afford to. Not now, she still had something to do.
Blake was caught of guard by the turn of events. He had aimed for Sylvester but had ended up stabbing Christopher. He recovered quickly. 'One gone, the other left to go!', he thought. He was going to kill them both and take over the Moon Ville Pack. Luckily, both Alphas had no heir. If they had, he would have killed the heirs as well.
He raised the spear again to drive into Sylvester who was lying shocked where he had landed when his brother pushed him away from the danger his spear posed while taking the hit for him, but Sylvester recovered but was not fast enough as the spear intended for him grazed his side but found its way into Cathania who had come to push Sylvester away from the raised spear.
Cathania fell. And Alpha Sylvester regained his balance and looked regretfully at Cathania, pain in his heart and the loss he was encountering in this battle. Though bleeding profusely, Sylvester got up, his eyes red as he advanced menacingly towards Alpha Blake who started moving backwards, staring at Alpha Sylvester with dread. This attack hadn't gone as well as he would have wished. All he wanted to do now was to escape with his life, if he could, then he could assemble a greater army of warriors and attack Sylvester. As soon as he thought that, he turned, his back to Sylvester and ran, Sylvester ran after him but was overtaken by Millicent who had left as soon as Samuel carried Alpha Christopher away from the battle ground into an inner room. She had grabbed a sword from a dead warrior as she ran after Blake whom she had seen running.'Coward!' she thought bitterly as she drew close to him.
As soon as she was a short distance from him, she threw the spear at him, aiming directly for his chest and it hit the target, stopping him in his tracks and piercing his heart. He stood for a while, staring at his chest, his knee trembling, buckling under him, then he crumbled to the floor.
'We had an agreement!' Millicent howled at him.
'No, we didn't! Blake said weakly, blood pouring from his mouth.
Alpha Sylvester had got to where they were.
'His father took the love of my life away', he growled, pointing at Sylvester. 'I saw her first but she went after him. He knew of my feelings for Magdalene but he made her his Luna and I had to make do with a second best after years of suffering heartbreak. I pined for my love but had no choice but to agonize over her loss. Know -ing she was ha-ppy with another nearly des-troyed me', he said haltingly caught in a fit of coughing, spurting blood, his words becoming slurred.
'I stayed like that, alone for ma-ny years, an Alpha without a Luna, be-cause no other woman would do and I couldn't very well go and reveal my feelings to her, she was already living her life with Merryweather, blissfully unaware of what she was doing to me', he paused, then said solemnly, 'I ended up marrying Selina - who I didn't even care for - to serve as my breeder. I got tired of pretending to be happy for them, when I was not. At long last, my patience paid off. The opportunity I had been waiting for presented itself and I used it to my advantage. I didn't ask Sylvester, foolish and impulsive Sylvester to assume unreasonably that your father - great and honourable Harry O'Hara who could never betray a friend - that such a man was responsible, and hence made him take the fall for me. I regret his death but it helped me keep my secret safe, at least until now', he paused as a fit of coughing ceased him yet again, causing him to spurt blood and bloody tissue. The region around his chest where the spear had pierced through was soaked with blood. His blood had pooled around him, and was increasing by the second. The sight was nauseating and Millicent thought disinterestedly and impersonally that it was a miracle that he was still alive but he seemed determined to continue talking despite the his obvious discomfort and pain. 'The satisfaction I felt when I killed both betrayers, Merryweather and Magdalene can better be felt than imagined!' he laughed harshly, spurting more bloody tissue but it was as though, having kept these things in his heart for so long, he wanted to unburden himself of them before dying. ' I can go in peace now, having avenged the wrong done me years ago! I had wanted to kill both you and your brother and take over the pack. It was part of my vengeance plan but it didn't work out that way. That's my only regret!' he concluded and started breathing with difficulty, his breathing sounding raspy, then he was gasping for breath,
Sylvester drove the spear that was sticking out of Blake, the one Millicent had thrown at him, deeper into him, and twisted it at an angle, and then drawing it down, causing it to cut him horizontally, almost into two, cutting off his breath completely.
