Six weeks passed in a wink of avoided phone calls and isolation, Elara barely leaving her apartment except for groceries until the mandatory pack assembly notice appeared under her door with a red seal that meant attendance wasn't optional.
She dressed in plain clothes and kept her head down as she entered the Silvercrest hall where more than two hundred pack members filled the seats, their conversations dying when they spotted her and the whispers starting immediately—rejected omega, did you know she once attacked Maya Thornwood, she's unstable.. blah blah blah.
Elara took a seat in the back row and stared at her hands while people pointed and murmured until the seer entered through the side door, she's an ancient mini old lady with white eyes that saw things no one else could.
The hall went silent as the seer moved to the platform, her staff tapping against the floor with each step, and pack elders rose from their seats in respect while Kai sat in the front row beside Maya, his father on his other side.
"I have seen a truth that must be spoken," the seer announced, her voice was loud despite her age. "The Alpha's true Luna carries his heir, the bloodline continues within her womb."
Congratulations erupted from the crowd and everyone turned to Maya, but she looked confused and shook her head slightly while touching her flat stomach.
The seer's staff struck the floor once. "Not the chosen Luna," she said and those white eyes turned toward the back of the hall, toward Elara's section. "The fated mate, the one that was rejected, she carries the Alpha's child."
Elara's heart stopped and the room tilted sideways as every face swiveled to stare at her, shock and disgust written across their features while her mind raced through the impossibility of what the seer was saying.
Pregnant? She couldn't be pregnant, she hadn't been with anyone except….
The hotel room flashed through her memory, the stranger's familiar voice, the heavy cologne masking his scent, waking up alone and naked with no memory of how she'd gotten there.
Six weeks ago, the same night as the rejection.
"This is sacrilege," the seer continued and her tone held no sympathy. "An omega bearing the Alpha's child outside of bonding violates pack law and the child will be cursed by this sin unless purification is performed."
The crowd exploded with noise—how did she trap him, omega whore, probably planned this, always knew she was desperate—and Elara couldn't breathe through the shame crushing her chest as mothers covered their children's eyes like she was something dirty they shouldn't see.
Kai's father stood, his face red with fury. "This is an outrage, my son would never…"
"The bloodline does not lie," the seer interrupted. "I have seen the truth in the magic, the child shares his essence and cannot be denied."
Elara pressed her hand to her stomach which felt no different than it had yesterday, it was still flat and unchanged, but if the seer said she was pregnant then it was true because the seer's magic never failed.
The stranger had been Kai, somehow, in disguise, and he'd done this deliberately while she was too drunk to recognize him or consent properly or understand what was happening.
"Elara will present herself for purification in three days," the seer declared. "Until then, she is not to leave pack territory or the curse will deepen."
Pack members stood and filed out slowly, their eyes on Elara with judgment and disgust as they passed, whispering about her sin and her desperation and how she'd ruined herself trying to trap an Alpha who didn't want her.
Elara stayed seated as the hall emptied, her hand still on her stomach and her mind spinning through fragments of that night, trying hard to piece together how Kai had orchestrated everything.
The seer approached Kai near the exit after everyone else had gone, speaking quietly but Elara's wolf hearing caught the words. "You are the father, your scent lives in the child's blood, I see the truth you're hiding."
Kai's expression didn't change, it was still cold and he still looked unmoved. "You're mistaken, old woman, I was never with her."
He walked away without looking back and the seer stood there watching him go, her white eyes somehow sad.
Liam caught up to Kai in the parking lot, grabbing his arm. "You need to act fast, we both know she's telling the truth and this will destroy everything we've planned."
Kai shook him off and got into his car without responding.
In his mind, he was already calculating, the solution was simple—exile her, remove the problem completely, make her and the child disappear before anyone could prove what he'd done.
Elara sat alone in the empty hall with one hand on her stomach where a stranger's child grew, except the stranger wasn't a stranger at all but the man who'd rejected her publicly and then used her privately for reasons she still didn't understand.
Tears fell but she made no sound, just sat there as afternoon light slanted through the windows and painted everything beautiful, beautiful and terrible all at once.
Three days felt like three years but the morning came anyway. As Elara walked to the pack temple with her stomach churning from nerves and morning sickness she'd only just started experiencing.
Pack members lined the path leading to the temple entrance, watching her pass with judgment in their eyes and whispers following her steps—sinner, omega whore, cursed child—and she kept her gaze fixed ahead because looking at their faces would break what little composure she had left.
The seer waited inside the temple's main chamber where candles burned in iron holders, five pack elders seated in a semicircle behind her while Kai stood off to the side with his arms crossed and Maya beside him holding his hand.
"Kneel," the seer commanded and Elara dropped to her knees on the cold stone floor, her hands shaking as the seer approached with a ceremonial bowl filled with water that glowed faintly blue.
The seer dipped her fingers in the water and pressed them to Elara's forehead, speaking words in the old language that Elara didn't understand but felt in her bones, the magic crawling under her skin and settling warm in her abdomen where the child grew.
"The purification cleanses the child of the mother's sin," the seer announced to the watching elders. "But the bloodline must be confirmed for the ritual to take full effect."
She pulled a silver knife from her robes and Elara flinched but the seer only made a small cut on Elara's palm, letting three drops of blood fall into the glowing water which immediately turned gold and began to swirl.
The seer added her own magic, chanting again in the old language while images formed in the water's surface—Elara at the bar, the stranger approaching, the hotel room, and then the stranger's face became clear as the magic stripped away the disguise.
Kai's face stared back from the water's reflection and gasps echoed through the chamber as the elders leaned forward, Maya's hand dropping from Kai's as she stepped back in shock.
"The Alpha heir is the father," the seer declared, her white eyes fixed on Kai. "The magic cannot be deceived, the bloodline speaks truth."
Kai moved forward fast, his expression twisted with anger. "This is a lie, I was never with her, someone's manipulated the magic."
"The old magic cannot be manipulated," Elder Thomas said from his seat. "If the seer's vision shows…"
"Then the seer is wrong," Kai interrupted, pulling out his phone. "I have proof I was nowhere near that bar the night she claims this happened."
He opened a video file and held the phone up for the elders to see—security footage from the Grand Arena showing him entering at 8 PM and not leaving until 2 AM, time stamps clear in the corner.
"I was at the arena practicing for the championship game," Kai said. "My coach was there, the security guards saw me, this footage proves I couldn't have been at some human bar getting an omega pregnant."
Elder Thomas frowned and gestured for the phone, studying the footage carefully while the other elders crowded around to watch.
"The footage appears legitimate," Elder Sarah said slowly. "Time stamps match the night in question."
"Because it is legitimate," Kai snapped. "Elara is lying to trap me into claiming a child that isn't mine, probably slept with some random human and now wants to pin it on me for status."
Maya found her voice finally, moving back to Kai's side. "She attacked me in my home last week, tried to hurt me because she's jealous, and now this? She's unstable and dangerous."
The seer struck her staff against the floor, the sound was so loud that almost everyone flinched. "The magic does not lie, I saw what I saw…"
"Then your magic is broken," Kai said coldly. "Or you've been bribed by someone who wants to see me fall, either way I won't accept false accusations from a rejected omega desperate for attention."
Elder Thomas handed the phone back, his expression troubled. "The evidence contradicts the seer's vision, which is unprecedented, but the footage is clear and can be verified with the arena's records."
"This is madness," Elara whispered, still kneeling on the floor. "He was there, the magic showed him, why would it lie?"
"Why would security footage lie?" Elder Sarah countered. "Alpha Kai has no reason to disguise himself and seduce his rejected mate, it makes no logical sense."
"Unless he wanted an heir while keeping Maya's wealth," the seer said quietly but no one seemed to hear her.
Kai's father stood from where he'd been watching in the shadows. "This omega has made serious false accusations against my son, the Alpha heir, and attempted to damage his reputation and his bonding with Luna Maya."
The other elders nodded slowly, their decision forming in the silence.
"For making false claims against the Alpha bloodline and attempting to manipulate pack magic for personal gain," Elder Thomas announced, "Elara Whitmore is hereby exiled from Silvercrest pack territory."
The words knocked out air from her lungs and Elara's vision blurred as she tried to stand but her legs wouldn't cooperate.
"You have twenty-four hours to gather your belongings and leave," Kai's father added. "If you're found within our borders after that time, you'll be arrested and imprisoned."
Kai smiled, while Maya pressed closer to his side like she'd won some competition Elara hadn't known she was competing in.
The seer said nothing more, just watched with her white eyes as guards lifted Elara from the floor and escorted her from the temple into the morning light that felt too bright and too cold all at once.
Twenty-four hours to pack six years of life into whatever she could carry, twenty-four hours before she'd be homeless and pregnant and completely alone.
Elara threw clothes into her suitcase without folding them, her hands were shaking as the clock on her wall showed 6 AM and she still had eighteen hours before the exile took effect but eighteen hours felt like eighteen seconds.
Something crashed against her front door and she jumped, as voices started shouting outside… "Omega whore!" and "Get out!" ….followed by more impacts.
She looked through the peephole and saw three of her neighbors from down the hall, people she'd smiled at for years, now throwing garbage at her door while Mrs. Kim stood behind them with her arms crossed and her face twisted with disgust.
Elara grabbed her second suitcase and kept packing, ignoring the noise until the little glass in her window shattered, along with more shouts about how she'd disgraced the pack.
Her phone buzzed with a message from her former supervisor at pack administration: Don't bother coming for your last paycheck, we're keeping it to cover the embarrassment you caused.
She shoved her documents into a folder (birth certificate, ID, bank statements), then she heard footsteps in her apartment, spinning around to find two of her ex-coworkers standing in her living room holding spray paint cans.
"Get out," Elara said but her voice came out weak.
"This is pack property," Jennifer said, the woman who used to bring Elara coffee and chat about weekend plans. "And you're not our pack anymore."
They sprayed red paint across her walls—LIAR, WHORE, REJECTED—while Elara stood there with her suitcase in hand and rage building in her chest but she was outnumbered and pregnant and had no authority here anymore.
She grabbed her bags and ran for the door, pushing past the neighbors who tried to grab at her clothes, and made it to her car in the parking lot where someone had keyed deep scratches into the paint and slashed one tire.
"You've got to be kidding me," she whispered and popped the trunk to grab her spare, changing it with shaking hands while people watched from their windows and no one offered to help.
She threw her suitcases in the back seat and started the engine, pulling out of the lot as someone threw an egg that splattered across her windshield, and she turned on the wipers without stopping.
The road to the territory border was empty this early and she'd planned to drive straight through, maybe stop for gas once she crossed into neutral land, but headlights appeared in her rearview mirror moving fast and getting closer.
Pack security vehicles, two of them with lights flashing.
"No," Elara breathed and pressed the gas pedal harder but her old sedan couldn't match their speed and they pulled up on either side of her, boxing her in.
The driver's side vehicle lowered its window and she recognized one as Kai's personal guards, the one who'd stood beside him at the rejection ceremony.
"Pull over," he shouted. "Alpha's orders."
"What do you guys want, I still have eighteen hours…"
"Orders changed, and your time has elapsed, so we came to arrest you for trespassing."
Elara's hands tightened on the wheel and she saw the border marker ahead, maybe two miles away, and made a split-second decision that was probably stupid but felt necessary.
She slammed the gas pedal to the floor and swerved right, cutting off the vehicle beside her and sending it skidding sideways while she shot forward with her engine screaming.
The guards recovered fast and came after her, their vehicles built for speed and power while hers was built for grocery runs and commuting, but she had desperation and they only had orders.
One mile to the border and they were gaining on her, they were close enough that she could see the driver's face in her mirror, close enough that when they hit her bumper her whole car jolted forward and fishtailed across both lanes.
She overcorrected and the car spins, the tires squealing as the world rotated and she lost track of which direction was forward, and then her car hit something solid and everything went black for a moment before pain exploded through her shoulder and chest.
When her vision cleared she was stopped sideways across the road with her airbag deployed and white powder covering everything, and through the cracked windshield she saw the border marker twenty feet away.
The security vehicles had stopped and the guards were getting out, walking toward her car with grim expressions.
Elara kicked her door open and fell out onto asphalt that scraped her palms, dragging herself forward on her hands and knees while blood dripped from a cut on her forehead and her shoulder screamed with pain.
Ten feet, then five, and she heard the guards shouting at her to stop but she kept crawling until her hand touched the border marker's base and she collapsed against it, gasping.
"She's past the line," one guard said, stopping at the marker like there was an invisible wall.
"Alpha's not going to like this."
"Not our problem anymore, she's exiled, let the borderlands have her."
They walked back to their vehicles and drove away, leaving Elara bleeding on the ground with her car smoking behind her and everything she owned scattered across the back seat, and the sun rising over territory she could never return to.
