Chapter 3

At that thought, I took a deep breath and tried to persuade them once more with the ethics of a proper doctor.

"Jill doesn't have any medical experience at all. She's lying. Grandma, if you let me operate on you, you'll get to live for another three years."

I did not expect our grandmother to scoff at what I said.

"You? Operating on me? With your less-than-mediocre capabilities? Dream on."

At that, Jill, Molly, and our grandmother left for the hospital.

Time was running out. They were worried that Robert would refuse the change of doctors if he found out about this, so of course, they were going to operate throughout the night.

As they left, my eyes gleamed sharply. Since Jill was planning to pretend to be me to operate on our grandmother, I would stay with Robert the entire night.

I wanted to see how Jill explained herself out of this one!

I took a document folder and headed to Robert's study.

Robert and his mother were as close as a mother and son could be. Her surgery was the next day, so he could not possibly sleep at all the night before.

When he saw me, he bellowed angrily, saying, "Why are you still awake? Tomorrow is your grandmother's surgery! You might not focus and make a mistake!"

I jumped and aggrievedly handed the medical report to him, saying, "Dad, the hospital had just sent me Grandma's latest report. I thought of sharing it with you."

Robert's expression softened.

I said, "Dad, the report shows that Grandma is in good condition. She will be able to come home one week after the surgery. When she returns, let's spend more time with her. She will surely be happy."

Robert could not hide his delight. He grabbed me by the shoulders tightly as tears of joy streamed down his face.

"That's amazing! Your grandmother has had a tough life. If you can cure her heart condition, we will always be indebted to you."

Then, he pulled me inside his study. "Come, tell me all about it. What are the changes?"

I smiled widely.

Just like that. The happier Robert was at that moment, the angrier he would be once he found out about the truth the next day.

After all, the higher one's hopes were, the more disappointed they would be!

I wanted to seek revenge on Jill, letting her have a taste of what she did to me in my previous life.

Robert and I discussed every single detail of the report.

He said emotionally, "Janice, you're a good kid. If you can cure Grandma, I will reward you handsomely. You'll get the same as Jill in the future. I can also give you half of the company's shares."

I shook my head shyly. "Dad, I'm just happy to be able to treat Grandma. I mean, Jill has just returned. She isn't familiar with the family yet. Don't be too nice to me. She's your biological child, after all."

Robert looked at me pensively and said nothing further.

Looking at the time, I said, "Dad, it's almost time. Let's head to the hospital now. That way, I can prepare myself, too."

He nodded and got the driver to take us to the hospital.

I had just changed into my scrubs and arrived at my grandmother's room when a figure rushed over to me, yelling, "You witch! You murdered Grandma!"

Chapter 4

There were a lot of people in the hospital. When they heard what Jill said, they quickly came over to have a look.

Jill's eyes gleamed with exhilaration when she saw a group of passersby forming.

She pointed at me, saying aggrievedly, "Janice, I never thought that you'd be so wicked. Just because Mom and Dad found out that you're not their biological child, and they brought me home, you'd actually kill Grandma? The person who raised you!

"Grandma trusted you! Just because you were worried that I'd find a better surgery plan, you went ahead with the surgery behind everyone's back! You kill her!"

Jill was sobbing so hard that everyone started to pity her.

Many started pointing at me, commenting among themselves.

"This woman looks like she's the attending physician, but she killed her own grandmother."

"The drama that goes on in a wealthy family isn't that simple. It might not be true."

Right at this moment, Robert, who had just finished some work in the car, arrived.

"What's going on?"

The moment Jill saw Robert, she threw herself in his arms, sobbing and saying, "Dad, I never thought that Janice would be so afraid of me taking her spot as the attending physician that she'd break hospital rules and operate on Grandma in the middle of the night! She didn't even tell us after the surgery had failed! You didn't get to see Grandma one last time.

"Before she died, Grandma was crying and asking to see you. She was afraid that no one would look after you after she was gone! Janice is pure evil!"

Robert was trembling. His face paled with misery. "Impossible. She was still doing well yesterday. How could this have happened? Jill, stop with your nonsense! Don't curse her!"

Right at this moment, Molly pushed the gurney with her mother-in-law's body on it.

"Honey, come quickly and have a look. Your mother died a terrible death. Jill told me all about it. She had found a better surgery plan, but who knew that Janice would be so vicious that she would jumpstart the surgery when she found out about it?

"If it weren't for Janice, Jill could've saved your mother! What will we do without her around? Your mother died on the surgery table from blood loss."

Then, Molly uncovered the shroud, showing our grandmother's bloodless, stiffened face.

Robert's eyes reddened. He fell next to her. Then, he carefully uncovered the rest of the shroud with trembling hands.

"Mom, are you feeling unwell? Don't worry. I've brought Janice here. She said that you'd live a long life."

The next second, he looked down at his mother's chest to see blood all over, her torn flesh exposed.

He was stunned into silence, clenching his fists so tightly that his bones crackled.

Jill's eyes gleamed with hidden excitement as she continued fanning the fire.

"Dad, this is all Janice's fault! I had just told her about the better surgery plan, but then she yelled at me! Grandma died because all her blood vessels ruptured! No normal surgery would cause that. She clearly sabotaged it!"

Jill shot me a provocative look, a dark triumph gleaming in her eyes. She thought that she had won.

However, the next second, Robert wrapped his hands around her neck.
