The first thing the fake heiress did when she saw me was imitate me.
I loved fishtail dresses. Hence, she immediately bought all the fishtail dresses in the city.
I loved roses. Thus, she made the entire rose garden hers. I thought she was only jealous that my family had brought me home.
Unexpectedly, my elder brother mistook her for me when he saw her from the back when she was wearing a fishtail dress. He gave me forty-nine lashes as punishment that night.
She was carrying roses in her arms when my father saw her cheek and mistook her for me. Then, my father immediately drove me out of the house.
Before I could investigate the matter, I died of acute renal failure.
After my death, I saw her marry my fiance with my family’s blessing.
She made a remark on the night of her wedding.
“System, I’ve got to thank you for letting me change people’s memories. As long as others mistake me for her, I can casually change their memories.”
Enlightenment gripped me, but it was too late.
It did not occur to me that I would return to the moment when she had just purchased the fishtail dresses.
I snapped back to reality when Melanie Smith slammed the money on the table.
Melanie shouted rudely, “I want all the fishtail dresses in this shop, especially the one she’s holding!”
In my previous life, Francis Smith, my elder brother, mistook Melanie for me. It was simply because she was wearing the fishtail dress I was holding.
Francis barged into my room that night. He made me take off my clothes and forced me to kneel on glass pieces as punishment. My legs were bleeding, but he was still angry. Thus, he harshly gave me forty-nine lashes.
“Are you out of your mind, Scarlett Smith? How dare you drug me?! You let me down!”
I realized that it was Melanie who had drugged Francis, but the system had tampered with those memories.
Once I remembered that, I smiled and texted Francis.
[Frank, I don’t like fishtail dresses anymore! I’ll only wear skirts from today onward. I’m going to be mad at you if you mistake someone for me.]
Francis texted me an emoji to tell me that he had understood. A long sigh of relief escaped me. I handed the dress to the salesperson. “Let her have it.”
But Melanie screamed when I wanted to turn and leave. “Scarlett! How could you hide a needle in the dress to prick me?!”
Before I could defend myself, someone abruptly slapped me and made me fall to the floor.
Henry Jordan, my fiance, looked at me with disgust. “I told you, Scarlett. If I find you bullying Mel, you’ll wish you were dead!”
Melanie snuggled up to Henry and looked at me provocatively. It hurt me.
Henry had mistaken Melanie for me the day before. Thus, he came to my house to cancel our engagement that night.
“How dare you hook up with men in bars?! My family won’t put up with such shamelessness!”
He did not wait for my explanation before he pinned me to the floor.
He handed Melanie a needle. “Get your revenge, Mel.”
Melanie pulled my tongue out and stabbed it with the needle fiercely. The needle soon pierced through my tongue, and I started bleeding.
“I’m sorry, Scarlett. I accidentally missed it. I’m sure you won’t blame me.”
I wanted to dodge, but Henry pinned me down hard. Helpless, I could only let Melanie stab my entire body with needles.
In the end, my body was filled with needles. I looked like a hedgehog.
Henry gave me an icy look. “Serves you right.”
It broke my heart. But I knew that the most important thing was that I could not let any other person mistake Melanie for me again.
A passerby drove me to the hospital. Henry’s parents dragged him to the hospital to apologize to me.
But when his parents left, he looked at me with hatred.
“It’s just a minor injury, Scarlett, but you used it as an excuse to force me to come and see you.”
I stared at him. I had to ask him a question because of our decades-long relationship.
“Henry, what did I do to make you hate me this much?”
Henry snorted. “What? Aren’t you happy being a playgirl? Tell me which hurt you more, Miss Scarlett. Being stabbed with needles or whipped by that man?”
Helplessness overcame me as I offered a weak explanation.
“That wasn’t me…”
Henry burst into laughter. “So, you’re saying that I was seeing things?”
Francis punched Henry. “Henry Jordan, I’ll kill you if you say anything more! Lottie is not that kind of person!”
I bit my lip and texted a private detective.
[Help me look into Henry and Melanie’s whereabouts for this week!]
Francis pinned Henry to the floor before the Jordan family dragged the latter out. Still, he yelled, “Scarlett Smith, loving you is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever done!”
Francis wanted to rush over. But I held back my tears and pulled him back. I reminded him, “Frank, you must never mistake someone else for me!”
“Don’t worry.”
But that night, Francis kicked the door of my ward down.
Melanie was standing behind him. She wore an odd smile.
Francis looked gloomy as he dragged me out of the hospital bed.
“Scarlett, I kindly came to the hospital to see you tonight. But you made someone prick me using the syringe used by an AIDS patient. How could you do that to me?!”
Disbelief filled me. My entire body was bandaged. I wondered why he would mistake Melanie for me.
Before I had time to ponder it, Francis had already dragged me out of bed. He gloomily fished out a syringe used by an AIDS patient and tried to stab me with it. But he failed to do so when he saw my teary eyes.
Hope rose in me. Maybe, he still trusted me.
However, he lazily waved. “Throw her into a pool of alcohol. She needs to learn her lesson.”
My body was filled with stab wounds from the needles. Hence, the pool was soon dyed red by my blood.
Melanie looked at me smugly while holding a bottle of sulfuric acid.
“Do you think Frank will blame me if I pour sulfuric acid into the pool, Scarlett?”
I gnashed my teeth. “What have you done?”
Melanie looked at me naively. “What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
Talia Smith, my mother, pounced on me to block the sulfuric acid before it splashed on my face.
Talia fell to the floor because of the pain, but she still braced herself and caressed my face. “I’m here. You don’t have to be scared…”
She fainted in the next moment.
David Smith, my father, and Frank hurriedly drove Talia to the emergency room. Melanie threw me a disgusted look.
“It’s not over yet! Just you wait!”
I ignored my pain and hurried to the emergency room.
Excruciating pain gripped me when I heard Talia’s piteous cries from inside.
Talia weakly searched for me. “Where’s Lottie?”
I was about to rush over, but Melanie fiercely dragged me to the side.
She was wearing a mask and a hospital gown similar to mine. She lowered her head and rushed into Talia’s embrace.
David and Talia hugged her and comforted her.
“It’s fine, Lottie. It’s not your fault…”
But their voices grew softer, and a dazed look came over them.
Melanie turned around and smiled at me.
“Mom, Scarlett is over the line! How could she try to splash sulfuric acid at me?”
David and Talia seemed to have just snapped back to reality. They firmly hugged Melanie.
“Don’t be scared, Mel! We’ll disown her right away! You’re our only daughter. We won’t forgive anyone who hurts you!”
I stood at the door. I was at a complete loss when Francis abruptly kicked me to the floor.
He gripped my hair and dragged me to Talia’s bed. He said fiercely, “Get down on your knees!”
I looked at my parents, but they averted their gazes.
Melanie whispered, “Frank, Scarlett pressed my head into the pool of alcohol just now. My head hurts so badly…”
David slapped me hard before scowling at me.
“You’re my biological daughter, Scarlett! Why are you this wicked?! Get lost! From now on, you are cut off from my family!”
I wanted to deny it, but Melanie suddenly spoke up.
“But everything she’s wearing belongs to the Smith family. If we want to cut her off, shouldn’t she…”
I looked at Talia. I was trembling, but she was caressing Melanie’s head, trying to comfort her.
“You have to bear the consequences after doing something wrong, Scarlett.”
An extreme pain overcame me. I bit my lip and took off my coat. “Is this okay?”
Melanie snorted. “Scarlett, you have to take everything off.”
My parents and brother kept silent. I shakily unbuttoned my shirt and put it on the floor. When I was about to take off my innerwear, Frank shouted, “Forget it. I don’t want people saying that we’re harsh! Get lost!”
I turned to walk out of the ward. But when I exited the hospital, a group of reporters rushed toward me with excitement.
“Miss Scarlett, I heard that the Smith family has disowned you. May I know if it’s because they found out that you’d harmed Miss Melanie?”
“Miss Scarlett, do you regret what you’ve done?”
The camera lights were on me, and I had no way out.
At that time, someone draped a jacket over me.
“Get in the car. Leave the rest to me. Nothing is what you think it is.”
