Chapter 2

Ethan and I naturally became a couple.

We grew up together, went to the same school, and entered the same college.

He attended to me so carefully.

In winter, Ethan would nervously ask me whether I caught a cold as soon as I coughed.

Every time I had my period, even if it was in the middle of the night, he would buy whatever I wanted to eat.

I remembered that once I interned in another city and had a low fever, he drove to where I was overnight and stayed with me all night.

"You must feel very uncomfortable and helpless when you are sick. I can't bear to see my girlfriend suffer like this," said Ethan.

On our wedding day, he took my hand from David and made a promise to him with tears in his eyes.

He said, "David, you are my second father! From now on, I finally have a family in this world! I'll love Violet for the rest of my life and will protect her from all the misery!"

After our wedding, Ethan was determined to start his own business, and David used his life savings to support him.

Meanwhile, David worried about Ethan's body as Ethan had to work overtime after his long working hours, so he often made chicken soup for him and reminded me to take good care of him.

Ethan said that David and I finally made up for the love he lacked in his childhood, and he felt satisfied, lucky, and happy.

I had seen what he was like when he loved me; that's why I could sensitively discern when his love faded.

Two years ago, Ethan was driving on a business trip when a series of accidents occurred on the highway, resulting in heavy casualties.

The person who should be held responsible for it had been killed in the accident, only leaving Olivia.

When Ethan saw the helpless Olivia, he thought of his past.

Out of humanitarianism and perhaps out of a bit of compassion in his heart, he did not ask for any compensation but instead offered Olivia a lot of money.

After hearing this, David said out of kindness, "I'm sorry to hear that. If she encounters any difficulties in the future, please help her as much as you can!"

But unexpectedly, Ethan fell in love with Olivia and raised her himself.

"Violet, Olivia has lost her parents. No one in this world will care about her except me!

"I owe her! I just treated her as a sister, and we didn't do anything amoral!

"Violet, could you please stop being so unreasonably jealous and be kinder to a little girl?"

We quarreled countless times because of Olivia, but I tolerated him again and again because we had known each other and had been together for more than ten years.

In the middle of the night, someone sent me an application to be my friend on WhatsApp.

With a woman's intuition, I knew it was Olivia.

Although she didn't send any messages to me after I passed her application, the posts on her Instagram flaunted her victory.

The latest one showed a big hand holding a small hand with a pair of couple rings on its ring fingers.

Enclosed with the post was a sentence: what belonged to me would eventually belong to me!

As I checked her previous posts, I found a picture she posted on the day they pushed David to the ground. The background of it was my bedroom, and Olivia was caressing Ethan's eyelash softly while he was sleeping.

She called him her Mr. Right.

Before that, they went on vacation together at the beach, climbed mountains together to watch the sunrise, and watched concerts together...

In the past two years, Ethan lied to me with the excuse of working overtime in order to spend time with her.

Even when I caught a high fever and wailed because of the fear and sharp pain in my throat, he didn't return home to stay with me and just ordered a medicine delivery for me on his business trip.

However, that afternoon, he managed to come back to take care of Olivia, who just had a low fever.

Olivia also commented on his caring movement, praising the efforts he had spent to come back from a distant city.

Looking at their backs leaning against each other, even though I had been totally disappointed by Ethan, I found myself still aching for his betrayal.

Because the memory that he was out of control and kissed me excitedly when he came back and found I had recovered from the high fever was indelible.

At that time, I thought that after almost losing me, he would cherish me more.

But now, I had realized that his caring reaction to me was just out of the guilt and compensation after cheating on me!

It was so fucking disgusting!

I was heartbroken over the loss of David, with whom I had depended for decades.

My love for Ethan and the last attachment to the happiness in the past had all gone at that moment.

Chapter 3

I had been busy with David's funeral these days and couldn't spare my energy to deal with other things.

Since the cemetery was in short supply, I had to wait for several days.

Early in the morning, I held his bone ashes and prepared to bury him.

Unexpectedly, the moment I opened the door, someone shoved me to the ground.

The only thing on my mind was to protect David's bone ashes, and then I heard a crack as my arms hit the ground; my bone fractured.

Looking up, I saw Ethan and Olivia standing at the door, followed by a group of reporters and self-media with cameras.

They rushed in, shouting my father's name.

Ethan angrily kicked open every door and searched everywhere but found no trace of David. Then, he rushed to me and said condescendingly, "Violet, where's your father?"

I held the urn tightly in my arms, feeling a surge of hatred in my heart.

"It's too late for you to think of him now!" I said.

Ethan grabbed my collars with outrage.

"Where is he hiding? Call him out! If he thinks he can hide away and we will forgive his filthy deeds, he's terribly wrong! I'll definitely beat this old pervert myself!"

Hearing this, I couldn't help but have an ominous feeling in my heart. Nevertheless, what he said made me quiver in rage.

"How dare you say something like that to my father? How can you be so ungrateful after he had patronized you for so many years?!" I said.

I thought he had known what happened and came here to attend David's funeral because of remorse.

And the reality slapped my face; he was here to slander David and back Olivia up!

"What? You're afraid to hear me reveal how shameless that old pervert is?!"

David was a righteous man all his life and was always kind to others, winning everyone's praise and gratitude. Now that he was dead, Ethan, the person who took off mostly due to his help and married his daughter, accused him of such a disgusting curse.

I was furious and pointed at Ethan angrily. "Don't you, an adulterer, dare to slander my father!"

The people around me burst into laughter and looked at me as if I were a clown.

"Don't you even look at your phone, Ms. Robinson?" one of the onlookers said.

"Maybe she feels ashamed of what her father did, so she pretends to be confused." another man said.

Then, Ethan took out his phone with a disdainful look.

"Facts speak louder than words. Look at what that old pervert did! I don't even want to bring it up!"

It looked like a surveillance video on his phone.

In that video, a man secretly opened Olivia's door, lay on the ground, and looked at the bathroom through the cracks in the door.

After more than ten minutes, he stood up and tiptoed out, and then Olivia came out wrapped in a bath towel.

Judging from the figure of the man in the video, he did look similar to my dad, but no one could be sure since he covered his face with a black mask.

Olivia stepped forward with a fake, pitiful face and wept artificially, "Violet, it must be a misunderstanding, right? Maybe David came to my house to discuss something serious with me. Just tell him to come out and clarify everything, okay?"

Ethan held her in his arms to comfort her and stared at me angrily.

"It was not a misunderstanding but an old pervert peeping at a woman in the shower! You're too innocent and naive, Olivia. Just see what the netizens have discovered!" said he.

I quickly took out my cell phone. This video was all over the Internet, with thousands of comments under each video.

They dug up David's identity as a teacher and our family situation, and with a series of misleading comments, they nailed my dad to the pillar of shame.

Netizen A: [He's a teacher? Kiss my ass!]

Netizen B: [Such a scambag should die now! I suggest the police should look into what he did in the past, see if they can find the victims also being molested by him!]

Netizen C: [He must be a recidivist! I just saw the news that praised him for saving a drowning girl. Look at his hand! He actually put his hand around her butt!]

Netizen D: [Holy crap, it's real. Just look at where he put his hands. I think we should castrate him and let all his children being raped!]

Netizen E: [Why hasn't anyone revealed all his evil deeds these years? Is someone in the government protecting him?]

Among the numerous comments, one highly suggestive comment gained the most attention.

Netizen F: [I don't know whether someone in the government is backing him up, but this old bastard is goddamn rich that he can easily bring five million dollars from his bank account! How can an ordinary teacher earn so much money?]

In fact, the five million dollars were the money David had supported Ethan in starting up his business.

And indeed, David couldn't make such vast sums; it was all from Lydia, who saved it when she was a businesswoman.

Only David, Ethan, and I know the exact amount of this fund.

Never had I anticipated David's support for Ethan to become evidence to prove the crime he had never committed.

I looked up with resentment and anger.

"Ethan, you know my father very well, and without his help, you will still be a obscure boy in the orphanage instead of a hypocritical saint with decent clothes and fancy cars today!"

A trace of guilt flashed across his face.

Meanwhile, Olivia wiped the tears that actually didn't exist and wept.

"How I wish everything was just a misunderstanding, Violet! But in fact, your father has tailed me home several times, and yesterday, he actually broke into my house and peeped at me when I was showering! I don't even have the guts to go home now. I'm so scared..." said Olivia.

Hearing this, Ethan looked more stern. "Are you going to turn blind to the evidence? I'll definitely take that old pervert to the police today!"

Olivia was obviously lying. It had been several days since David's death, and he couldn't break into her house yesterday.

But Ethan didn't doubt her at all.

Over the years, David treated him as his own son, cared for him with all his heart, and was always worried that he would be tired.

And Ethan repaid his kindness with sleazy slander and cheating on his daughter.

I was more irritated when thinking of the message David left before his death that told me to communicate with him.

The funeral was about to start, and I didn't have time to argue with them and just wanted to leave.

Ethan took out his cell phone and called David directly.

Then, David's phone rang from the urn.
