Chapter 1

A major car accident nearly cost me my life. With ambulances in short supply, paramedics provided basic care as I waited for rescue.

Mustering all my strength, I called Granger, who was on vacation, to save me.

He coldly replied, "Can you stop pulling these stunts to get me to see you? I'm very busy."

I was rushed to the ER and told there weren't enough doctors. The hospital called Granger to come back and assist with the emergency.

At that moment, he was at an intern's house performing surgery on a dog. He made various excuses and only returned to work at the hospital the next day.

But by then, I had already been transferred to another city for surgery, barely escaping death.

Three years later, I returned home to visit my father who had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. I ran into Granger at the hospital.

Wearing his white coat, he smirked at me, "Finally decided to come back? If you want to marry me, go apologize to Melody first. Then I'll consider whether to take you as my wife or not."

But I was already a mother by then, with a pair of twins. I no longer needed to beg him to marry me.

------

Upon learning of my father's hospitalization due to a brain hemorrhage, I promptly purchased a plane ticket to return to my hometown and visit him.

Unexpectedly, I ran into Granger who was working at the hospital.

He was wearing a white coat, looking confident and accomplished, with a nameplate on his chest displaying his position as chief physician.

Seeing me looking travel-worn, he stopped me and said,

"Evelina, where on earth have you been these past two years? Did you go into hiding just because I didn't marry you?"

I hadn't realized Granger had changed hospitals, and it happened to be where my dad was admitted.

Eager to see my father and not wanting to get entangled with him, I spoke with a harsh tone.

"Get out of my way. Don't block me from my important business."

Never having heard me speak to him so brusquely before, Granger pulled his hand out of his pocket.

He grabbed my arm forcefully and said in an unpleasant tone, "I'm trying to have a civil conversation with you. Why are you still so disrespectful?!"

His grip on my arm was painful. I glared at him and said, "What's wrong with you?"

Granger looked at my reddened arm, paused for a few seconds, then said, "I'm sorry, I..."

Before he could finish, I walked away and took the nearby stairs up to the thirteenth floor where the inpatient department was located.

I saw that because my dad's condition was caught early and he received prompt treatment, he was conscious and able to move his limbs, though they were still a bit numb.

My anxious heart finally relaxed, and I let out a sigh of relief.Mom was worried that Dad hadn't slept for two days and one night. I told her to go back and rest, and I would take over watching him.

At seven in the evening, just as I was about to feed Dad, Granger appeared at the doorway with some fruit.

He had already taken off his white coat and was wearing casual clothes. After putting down the fruit,

His gaze fixed on my reddened hands. He took out some Tiger Balm from his pocket and said to me:

"Evelina, I'm sorry about what happened this morning. I got a bit worked up. Put some of this on first.

If you had told me earlier that your father was in the hospital, I wouldn't have treated you like that. You always keep things to yourself, just like two years ago when you left without a word."

What a phony. I rolled my eyes and swatted the ointment out of his hand.

I spoke coldly and distantly: "Please don't call me by my nickname, and you put your hands on me, that's what you did. Why bother with all these excuses? I don't accept your apology.

Before I lose my temper, take your fruit and leave."

Seeing how unfriendly I was, and noticing the strange looks from patients in the next room, Granger's face darkened.

Just then his phone rang, and as soon as he answered, his tone became gentle.

"Fifi threw up again? I'll come right away and take her to the vet. You..."He hurriedly walked out of the hospital room while talking on his phone, his voice fading until I could no longer make out what he was saying.

Fifi is Melody's pet dog.

Chapter 2

Two years ago, I was in a car accident. Due to the high number of injured patients who were unconscious, the ambulances were only transporting those with severe injuries.

As I was still conscious, I had to wait for the next available transport. But at that moment, I felt like my internal organs had been shattered, and I was so dizzy that I thought I might die at any second.

Terrified of dying, I called Granger. He was on vacation at the time, but I wanted him to come save me.

However, when he received my call, he thought I was being unreasonable. He assumed I was lying about the accident just to get him to come see me, and he refused my plea for help.

Later, I only found out through a post on Melody's social media account.

During the time of my accident, Granger was performing orthopedic surgery on her pet dog, Fifi.

In his eyes, I, his official girlfriend, wasn't even as important as his intern's dog.

My mom and I took turns taking care of my dad, alternating days.

When I went to relieve my mom, I saw Melody, dressed in a white coat, sitting by my dad's bedside, laughing and chatting.

Noticing that my dad's IV bag was almost empty, she eagerly offered, "Uncle, wait a moment. I'll go get a new bag to replace it for you right away."

My mom and dad smiled, saying, "Okay, thank you, doctor."Melody turned around and saw me standing in the doorway, looking displeased.

She smiled and stuck out her tongue playfully, saying, "Hey, Evelina! I heard you were back, so I came to check on you guys."

I didn't say a word, my face dark as I set down the thermos. Mom chided me, "What's wrong with you? The doctor is being so friendly, taking time out of her busy schedule to chat with us and even encouraging your dad to get out of bed more. How can you be so rude?"

I pouted, not wanting to argue with my parents, and forced a smile. "Yes, yes, Mom's always right. Let's not talk about that now. Come try this chicken soup I made myself. I managed to get my hands on a free-range chicken. It's very nutritious."

Just then, Melody came in with an IV bag. As she was about to connect it, I stopped her.

Melody looked hurt and said, "What's wrong, Evelina? I'm just changing your dad's IV. If you keep holding onto me, the blood will backflow."

I snatched the IV bag from her hand and pointed at the label, saying, "If you can't do a nurse's job properly, then don't do it at all. Look at this name. Is it my dad's name and bed number? Were you going to change his IV without even checking?"

Melody's face turned pale as she looked. Her voice choked up as she said, "I... I didn't mean to. I just wanted to change Uncle's IV quickly."She was crying in her white coat. Anyone who didn't know the situation might think I was bullying her.

The parents who had just been defending Melody were now silent. After all, mixing up medications is a hard pill to swallow for anyone.

Even the patient in the next bed chimed in with a few critical remarks, which made Melody break down sobbing uncontrollably.

She bowed to me and apologized through her tears, "I'm so sorry, Evelina. I had no idea my good intentions could have led to such a terrible mistake. It's all my fault."

Just then, an angry roar came from the doorway, "What the hell are you doing?!"

In the next second, Granger violently shoved me again, causing my side to slam against the bed rail.

The car accident had left me without a spleen and with multiple fractures. My body was now held together with metal plates, and that push had hit me right where I was injured.

It made me break out in a cold sweat, and my vision started to blur with stars.

Granger hugged Melody and yelled at me, "Evelina, if you have any issues or grievances, you can take them up with me. But you absolutely cannot bully Melody. She's just a resident doctor in training. As patients, can't you show a little more understanding?

If you keep picking on young doctors like this, who's going to want to become a doctor to treat you in the future?"

Chapter 3

Melody's face was filled with sadness as she buried herself in Granger's arms, sobbing, "Granger, I'm fine. If everyone dislikes me as a doctor so much, I might as well go and resign to the chief, boo-hoo-hoo."

Granger angrily ordered me, "Evelina, apologize to her right now. You've made Melody cry."

These two lovey-dovey couples are treating the workplace like a playground, and now they're behaving this way in front of my parents.

At this point, his favoritism towards Melody doesn't affect me anymore. My heart no longer aches.

Why should I apologize?

I went straight to the doctor's office to complain about Melody's carelessness at work, her lack of thorough examinations, and her crying in front of us patients.

As luck would have it, the hospital leadership came down for an inspection and discovered my report. They immediately sent Melody home to reflect and write a self-criticism, barring her from coming to work for a while.

Even Granger, the top dog in surgery, was called in for a talk with the hospital director.

In the evening, my husband told me he had arrived with the twins. I asked him not to bring the children over and to rest well before seeing their grandparents.

My husband replied: "okay, whatever you say, darling. But I'm passing by your hospital to buy some snacks for Blossom. Want to come out for a quick hug?" It's been days since I last saw my darling. I miss her.]

This guy lies without even bothering to come up with a cover story. The hospital is nowhere near where they live - it's not on the way at all.

But I've been missing him too. While waiting for my husband downstairs, I saw him get out of his car. Overjoyed, I rushed over and threw myself into his arms.

The fresh scent of his body wash calmed my heart. I whispered in his ear, "Honey, I've missed you too."

"I've missed you as well, darling. You must be exhausted. Sweetheart and Blossom are asleep. I need to head back or they'll probably cry if they don't see me. The nanny can't manage alone."

That brief moment of tenderness dispelled much of the day's frustrations.

I said goodbye to my husband, watching his car from the roadside until the taillights disappeared. Only then did I pick up the pancake he'd bought me, ready to eat.

Suddenly, someone appeared behind me, startling me so much I dropped the bite of pancake from my mouth.

A hand tapped my shoulder: "Who was that man just now? Why were you smiling at him?"

Granger interrogated me with a gloomy face, his tone unyielding. As he spoke, his fingers on my shoulder kept tightening.

Feeling the pain, I grabbed the wooden skewer in my hand and jabbed it hard into his arm, cursing, "Let go! You're hurting me."Granger winced in pain but didn't let go. Instead, he became more aggressive, backing me up to the flower bed until I sat down on the ceramic railing with a thud.

I tried to stand up and leave, but Granger pressed me down and demanded, "You still haven't answered my question. Who was that guy just now? What's your relationship with him?"

I found his behavior bizarre. He claimed to love Melody, yet he was oddly interested in my personal life.

Not wanting to get entangled further, I answered truthfully, "He's my husband. The one on our marriage certificate. We're legally married. I've answered you now, so can you let go?"

But my response only made Granger more agitated. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look directly into his eyes.

"Evelina, you don't have to resort to these tactics to force me to marry you. Don't think I don't know that you deliberately brought your sick father to the hospital where I work, and intentionally let me catch you being intimate with another man when I got off work. To be honest, I'm feeling quite upset.

If you want me to marry you, just agree to one condition, and we'll go get our marriage license right away.

Go apologize to Melody and withdraw your complaint against her. Do you know that because of your complaint, she might lose her job now?"Turning and turning, it always comes back to this Melody.

Two years ago, I was indeed anxious to get married because I was already in my thirties. If I didn't get married and have children soon, it might become difficult for me to conceive.

I really wanted children and loved them, but Granger kept dragging his feet, always using the excuse that his career wasn't on track yet, asking me to wait.

But I had already waited for him for 7 years, from his residency to his job.

A sneer crossed my lips as I looked Granger up and down. He was no longer as handsome as he used to be, and had even gained a few wrinkles and dark circles under his eyes.

I said, "Granger, when did I ever beg you to marry me? If you want to get married, go find your student Melody. I'm sure she'd be more than willing to marry you."
