Chapter 4

I was finally able to move after Damon and Bonnie left the shopping, so I went back home.

Later that night, Damon strode into our bedroom with a satisfied smile on his lips. However, it turned into a nervous one when he saw the scowl on my face as I glanced at him.

I didn't say anything as I moved my gaze back to my laptop to continue watching the movie that I was watching before he came in.

His gaze moved to my stomach before he looked back at me, “Were you waiting for me?”

“Yes.” I muttered in a cold voice.

“Don't wait for me next time.” He replied then walked over to me.

“By the way, how's our baby doing? Has he started kicking yet?” He murmured as he placed his hand on my stomach.

I brushed his hand away as I thought of the day that I lost our baby.

It was heartbreaking to think about it.

I didn't want to tell him that I’ve lost it when he didn't care about me, so I changed the subject, “Don't worry, I won't wait for you anymore.”

A pained look passed over his face as he sighed, “Are you angry that I've not been home because of Mafia business? Our wedding anniversary is coming up, I'll make it special for you.”

“Sure.” I answered as I glanced at him.

A smile touched his lips as he murmured, “You'll love the day that I've planned for us.”

I nodded and he looked relieved that I wasn't angry.

On the day of our wedding anniversary, Damon took me to the amusement park.

He seemed excited as we entered the park. He kept talking about how he was sure that I would love the park, but I wasn't sure about that.

As we waited in line to climb the rollercoaster, his phone beeped, signaling that a message came through.

He pulled it out of his pants pocket then his lips tugged up in a smile as he typed a reply.

He shoved his phone back into his pants pocket as he glanced at me, “Listen, I have to go to the gang's warehouse because of some Mafia business; the Mafia Lord of Britain’s Mafia gang is here to see me and he traveled from Britain for this business. I forgot that he was coming today and I can't keep him waiting.”

I could tell that it was just an excuse to go and see Bonnie, so I gave him a smile even though my heart was breaking inside.

“Okay.” I replied as I nodded.

He looked a bit surprised that I didn't make a fuss, “So you're not mad?”

I widened my smile, “Yeah, I know that Mafia business can't wait.”

He looked glad that I wasn't making a fuss and said, “I'm really sorry that I have to leave. We'll come back another day and have so much fun. I promise.”

I nodded as I remembered that I would be leaving the country soon. I couldn't wait.

It soon reached my turn to ride the rollercoaster and I rode it alone like I was a pathetic person. That was what Damon and Bonnie see me as, but not anymore. This was the end of my pathetic marriage.

I glanced at the roller coaster cart in front of mine to see a couple holding hands as they squealed in excitement. They laughed as they commented on how fun the ride was.

Damon used to arrange special outings for us whenever it was our wedding anniversary, but today, he left me all alone.

I thought of our wedding anniversary dates and how fun they usually were.

Damon would give me several gifts and make love to me, but today, things have changed.

After the rollercoaster ride, I decided to go home since I didn't want to feel pathetic anymore.

Even though I was married to Damon, it felt like I was single since I was so alone.

Chapter 5

The next day, Damon bought me roses to make up for leaving me at the amusement park.

I felt a bit touched, but then I felt angry because I saw Bonnie's Instagram post.

It was a video of her saying, “My man bought me so many roses that I had to ask him to give them to some of his friends and colleagues. Isn't he so sweet?”

She moved the phone's camera towards her table and I saw many roses both on the table and on the floor.

So I was getting her hand-me-downs again? I sighed as my eyes filled with tears, and I decided to throw out the roses.

Later that day, we were sitting in the living room when Damon glanced at me as he said, “I'm going to my friend’s birthday party.”

It seemed suspicious that he didn't mention the friend’s name, so I asked, “Which of your friends?”

He laughed nervously as he asked, “Why do you want to know?”

“Just like that, and why hasn't he invited me? Your friends usually invite me to their birthday parties.” I answered him.

He let out a defeated sigh and replied, “Bonnie is visiting the country and today is her birthday. She's hosting a small house party, and only her close friends are invited, so that's probably why she didn't invite you.”

“Well, I want to go with you.” I said as I gave him a small smile.

Sweat trickled down his forehead as he replied, “Are you sure you want to go? You two aren't close.”

“Yes, I'm sure.” I answered him.

He ran a hand down his face and nodded, “Fine, let's go.”

When we arrived at Bonnie's house, he rang the doorbell. It took her two minutes to answer.

“Damon! I've missed you!” She exclaimed as she leaned closer to him and pecked his cheeks.

She looked as beautiful and elegant as always while I looked average.

Was this why he wanted her, and not me?

“I've missed you too, Bonnie.” He replied as he grinned at her.

“I'm glad to hear that.” She said as she grinned back at him.

He was staring into her eyes and she stared back into his.

I couldn't take their disrespect anymore, so I cleared my throat.

They both turned to me and a guilt shown on his face while surprise shown on her face.

“You brought Katie with you?” She asked as she turned back to him.

“Yeah, she wanted to come.” He answered her as she frowned.

She turned back to me and her frown vanished as she gave me a tight smile, “It's been years since I saw you. How have you been?”

“Great.” I answered in a clipped tone of voice, not bothering to ask how she was because I really didn't care.

When she saw that I didn't reply, she said, “I'm sorry for pecking Damon, it's just that we're so close.”

I gave her a tight smile, “Oh, I know just how close you two are.”

“Okay. Well, come on in.” She replied, looking nervous as she stepped aside to let us pass.

“Sure.” I replied while Damon replied, “Okay, Bon Bon.”

He even had a nickname for her when he didn't give me a nickname.

The house was filled with people dancing and laughing as music blared from the speakers.

So Damon was lying when he said that she invited only her close friends. He just wanted to defend her.

My heart clenched in pain and I drew in a deep breath then let it go.

She led us to one of her couches and we sat down. She kept talking to Damon, ignoring me and her friends didn't acknowledge me, so I felt awkward.

She kept bringing up their childhood memories and he would laugh with her. It felt like she was trying to show me just how close they were, and how he preferred being with her to me.

He seemed to have even forgotten that I was there as he kept talking with her.

“Bonnie, why are you taking Damon's attention away from his wife? You broke up with him because he loved you too much, and now that he's married, you want him?” Bonnie and Damon's friend, Penny said as she looked between the two of them.

Bonnie’s face fell and she looked pitiful as she replied, “I had to break up with him because I was moving to Chicago for College. We would have been miserable if we had stayed in a long distance relationship.”

Damon looked like he pitied her as he rubbed Bonnie's arm in a reassuring way.

He turned to Penny as he defended Bonnie, “Bonnie is right, we would have been miserable in a long distance relationship and I'm sure that it hurt her as much as it hurt me. You don't know what she's been through, so don't judge her.”

Everyone stared at Penny as they waited for her reply, but she didn't respond.

I felt anxiety grip me as I stared at Bonnie and Damon. With the way that he defended her, it was obvious how much he cared for her.

Suddenly, one of the party people yelled, “Someone is ringing the doorbell!”

"I'll get it!” Bonnie said as she stood up from the couch.

Three minutes later, she returned with a large transparent cake box in her hands. It had five layers and it was very big.

Everyone started whispering as they stared at the cake box.

She placed it on the center table and grinned as she glanced at Damon, “The delivery guy said that you ordered this birthday cake for me."

Chapter 6

“Yeah." Damon answered Bonnie with a grin on his face.

"Happy birthday!” He exclaimed as Bonnie sat back down beside him.

“Awe, Damon! You're so sweet!” She squealed.

Realization seemed to dawn on him as he glanced at me, “Katie, I hope you don't mind me buying Bonnie a birthday cake? It's not a romantic gesture, it's just that we're so close.”

More whispers broke out amongst everyone and I was sure that they were saying that I was the other woman while Bonnie was the wife.

I drew in a deep breath and let it out as I replied, “Of course, I don't mind. You two are the closest people I know.”

Damon stayed quiet as he processed the sarcastic tone of my voice.

I remembered my birthday and how he left me all alone. He didn't even buy me a birthday cake, yet here he was buying one for Bonnie.

He has never bought me a five layered cake, he only bought the ones with one layer.

It was obvious how much he values Bonnie.

There was a time when I caught Damon talking to Bonnie on a video call. He was too engrossed into the video call that he had no idea that I've entered the room.

He was telling her how he wanted to relocate to Chicago just for them to be closer to each other.

Did he even try to consider whether I wanted to move or not?

I've been with Damon through thick and thin. He wasn't so rich when we first started dating; I would pay the bills from my Dad's inheritance while he struggled to put food table.

Where was Bonnie when he needed someone to lean on?

I was the one that soothed his pain and helped him when he needed it.

It seemed that he has forgotten all that I've done for him.

He only gave me attention when Bonnie wasn't available to talk with him.

I always came second to him, and she was always first.

Half an hour later, the party moved outside for the barbecue.

As Damon, Bonnie and I sat at our table, I noticed a helicopter flying in the sky and a large banner was tied to it.

The banner read, “Bonnie and Damon together forever."

Damon smiled as soon as he saw the banner, but then he glanced at me and his smile dropped as he grimaced.

“Katie, I- I just wanted to make Bonnie's birthday special." He muttered as he looked nervous.

"Okay.” I replied in a cold voice.

Bonnie laughed as she said, "It's just a banner, Katie. I'm sure that he made it for me because we're just so close.”

I felt humiliated and pained as the helicopter kept flying around with the banner.

Anyone that read that banner would think that they were a couple.

Was Damon trying to make a fool out of me?

Well, he didn't expect me to come along.

He has never done something like that for me.

Everyone was whispering and I could faintly hear what they were saying.

One of them, a woman, said, “Damon has to be the best boyfriend to do this kind of thing.”

I stood up and started walking away because I couldn't take it anymore.

“Katie!" Damon called as he ran over.

He stopped in front of me as he said, “Are you angry? Don't be. I'm not Bonnie's boyfriend, I'm your husband.”

“Okay." I muttered in a steady voice, trying not to let him see how much he hurt me.

His eyes widened in surprise at my reply and he asked again, “You're not angry?"

“I'm not, so don't worry about it." I answered him.

Confusion was evident on his face as he stared at me, but he didn't say anything and we walked to the car in silence.

Later that day, I was on the couch in the living room, reading a novel when Damon walked in.

He came to the couch and laid his head on my lap.
