Chapter 1

For twelve years, I trusted my fiancé, the syndicate's ruthless Underboss, and my best friend, Mia.

But on the night of my birthday, I found a dark web forum where Mia was bragging about sleeping with him.

She posted a picture wearing my custom blood-diamond engagement ring, boasting that they had been sharing a bed for six years.

At my grand birthday banquet, they executed their final public humiliation.

Lorenzo dropped to one knee in front of hundreds of Capos, but instead of proposing, his velvet box sprayed cheap, sticky frosting all over my face.

"It's just a harmless hazing prank I lost to Mia in a bet," he chuckled, brushing confetti from his tailored suit.

Looking at his smug face, I remembered the cartel ambush in Palermo.

Lorenzo had shielded Mia with his own body and shoved me away, leaving me to suffer a brutal miscarriage alone in a dirty alley.

In their leaked chat logs, he callously referred to the heir I lost as a weak mistake.

I had protected Mia with my mafia family's name since we were teenagers, and I had loved Lorenzo with all my heart.

Why did the two people I trusted most under the sacred code of Omerta treat me like a disposable pawn?

I calmly wiped the cloying frosting from my eyes and delivered a brutal, full-force slap across Lorenzo's jaw.

Then, I signaled my loyal soldiers to drop the massive projector screen, ready to expose their filthy treason to the entire Family.

Chapter 1

Clara POV

I was staring at the syndicate's encrypted forum when the image resolved itself on my screen: a photograph of the custom blood-diamond engagement ring my fiancé had commissioned.

It had been posted by my best friend.

The caption bragged that the engraved initials were hers. It warned that if the birthday girl did not cancel her mafia wedding by midnight, her Underboss lover would personally execute anyone who tried to show her the sex tape they had just filmed.

The stark luminescence of the phone was the only light in the heavily guarded penthouse.

I had just returned from an intimate pre-birthday gathering hosted by Mia—the girl I had protected with my family's name since we were teenagers.

Darkness had swallowed the living room; I was a shadow recessed in the deep velvet of the sofa, waiting for a message from Lorenzo.

Lorenzo Falcone was the Underboss of our syndicate.

The record of an entire rival cartel, wiped out on the East Coast before his twenty-fifth birthday, had settled into the dark, indelible scars across his knuckles.

And for twelve years, those same hands had been the ones to meticulously smooth the creases from my skirts.

Suddenly, my phone vibrated in my palm.

It was a text from Lorenzo.

"Secure and clear. She was dead drunk, but I got her into her safehouse. Headed back to you now, mi amore."

It was not a feeling, but a physical event: a sudden, violent plunge in temperature, as if a pail of ice water had been dashed over my head, seizing the blood in my veins.

I looked back at the encrypted forum, a hidden network used only by the lowest associates and soldiers in our underworld.

The anonymous poster was currently active.

She was replying to a comment that warned her she was playing a dangerous game by messing with a Made Man's fiancée.

She laughed at the warning.

She boasted that her high-ranking mafia boyfriend would help her exact revenge and publicly humiliate the birthday girl tomorrow night.

She wrote that he always prioritized her safety during cartel hits, diverting the choicest illicit spoils to her before his fiancée ever laid eyes on them.

My fingers trembled as I zoomed in on the photo she had attached.

It was not just the blood-diamond ring resting on a velvet cushion.

In the blurred periphery of the image, resting on a bedside table, was a watch of limited edition.

I had bought that exact watch for Lorenzo three months ago to launder a massive sum of syndicate money.

Beside the watch lay a jade bracelet.

It was the matching half of the sisterhood bracelet I currently wore on my own left wrist.

Mia was not insensible with drink; she was lucid, lying in a bed with the watch I had bought my fiancé, composing posts on a dark web forum about how she had stolen his first kiss and shared his bed on countless occasions.

She bragged that he had delayed his mafia betrothal to me three times just for her.

A scalding nausea clawed its way up my throat.

I scrolled down to her latest comment.

She complained that the birthday girl had only gifted her a designer bag, completely clueless to the fact that during a syndicate operation trip in our sophomore year, she and the Underboss had slept together seven times.

The memory arrived not as thought, but as a dull, concussive force against my ribs.

I remembered that trip in the mountains.

Mia had claimed her legs gave out on the trail.

Lorenzo had handed me his heavy pack and carried Mia up the rocky path while I walked behind them, wiping the sweat from my brow, trusting them both with my life.

The salt of it stung my eyes before the first drop fell, blurring the glass of the screen.

The two people I trusted most under our sacred code of Omerta had been making a fool of me for years.

My fingers tightened around the phone until the edges bit into my palm. Every instinct screamed at me to call my soldiers, to end this now, to leave Lorenzo a message of ice and ash and disappear before dawn. But the Capos would gather tomorrow night. Every Made Man in the syndicate would be in one room, raising their glasses in my name. If I walked away tonight, Lorenzo and Mia would spin their own story before I could tell mine. No. I would let them believe I was still their fool. For one more day. And then I would bury them in front of everyone who mattered. I set the phone down gently, as if it were made of crystal, and let the darkness swallow me whole.

Chapter 2

Clara POV

The screen flickered as the thread on the dark web forum refreshed automatically.

Mia had just posted another comment, every digital word dripping with a familiar, calculated venom.

She bragged about gifting the birthday girl a vintage silver rosary as a sick, twisted joke.

She revealed the rosary's clasp was broken—snapped during a violent, degrading encounter with the Underboss in the back of his armored SUV.

A knot of pain tightened in my throat, making each breath a sharp, difficult labor.

Lorenzo had given me that exact silver rosary just last month.

He had met my gaze without flinching and lied, swearing he had procured it from a sacred shrine in Sicily for my protection.

My vision blurred as Mia kept typing, bragging that during the holidays, her lover had smuggled her into his family's heavily guarded compound to meet his Consigliere parents.

To prove it, she posted a picture of her wrist wearing a thick, gold heirloom bangle.

My stomach seemed to drop through the floor of my body. Lorenzo's mother had worn that bangle every day of her life, claiming it was a family treasure that would only ever pass to a true mafia bride.

They were all in on it.

His parents, the guards, the very people I had foolishly considered my future family.

At exactly one in the morning, the heavy oak door of my penthouse clicked open.

His heavy footsteps echoed ominously across the marble foyer.

Lorenzo walked into the dimly lit living room, bringing with him the sharp scent of cold night air, bitter gunpowder, and the unmistakable, sickly-sweet notes of Mia's signature perfume.

He dropped his suit jacket on a chair and walked toward me in the dark.

Reaching out, he pulled me flush against his chest, his large, calloused hands gripping my waist.

I did not pull away. I catalogued every detail: the perfume, the lie in his breathing, the way his heartbeat against my back was steady and slow—the heartbeat of a man who believed he had already won. Let him believe it. I needed him confident. I needed him careless. Tomorrow night, I would teach him the difference between confidence and a trap.

Before I could pull away from the lie of his embrace, my phone buzzed loudly with an incoming video call.

It was Mia.

Behind me, the fingers resting on my waist contracted, the knuckles digging into my ribs with a sudden, painful pressure. His breathing, until then a steady rhythm against my back, caught for a half-second, and I felt the difficult slide of his throat as he swallowed. He made a subtle, useless attempt to lean out of the camera's frame, his dark eyes fixed over my shoulder on the glowing screen, betraying a frantic tension that was equal parts terror and fascination.

I forced my finger to swipe accept and held the screen up between us.

Mia's face appeared, her eyes drooping as she put on a flawless, Oscar-worthy performance of a heavily intoxicated woman.

She deliberately slurred her words, telling me how much she loved me and how guilty she felt that she could not afford to buy me an expensive designer birthday bag in return.

On the screen, Mia's fake, drunken smile vanished in a heartbeat.

Without warning, she let out a sharp, blood-curdling scream.

The phone in her hand clattered to the floor, the camera jarring until the screen showed nothing but the stark white ceiling of her bedroom.

Against my skin, the warmth of a devoted lover evaporated. In its place was the chill of a man whose right hand instinctively traced the line of his spine, down toward the holster I knew was nestled there.

He released me as if I had burned him and bolted toward the foyer.

He grabbed his weapon from the console table, his chest heaving with a sudden, raw panic.

He threw a frantic look at me and barked that her safehouse might have been compromised by a rival crew, and that he had to go secure the perimeter.

Without waiting for a reply, he slammed the heavy oak door behind him with a deafening thud.

A second later, the video call disconnected.

I remained on the velvet sofa, the fabric seeming to cling to my skin, my hair filmed with a damp, chilling sweat.

With trembling fingers, I looked down at my phone and refreshed the forum one last time.

Mia had just posted a brand-new comment.

She openly mocked the birthday girl, calling her a clueless, pampered princess who did not even realize her best friend had just intentionally lured her Made Man right out of her bed with a single, fake scream.

I stared at the words until they blurred. Then I opened my encrypted contacts and sent a single message to my tech enforcer: "Everything. Save everything. The forum, the timestamps, the images. Have it ready for the banquet hall screen." His reply came within seconds. "Already done, boss." I set the phone down and let the silence settle around me like armor. Let them play their games. I was building the board they would lose on.

Chapter 3

Clara POV

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse, casting a cold, sterile light across the room.

I sat in the same depression on the sofa, my spine held so erect that not an inch of it made contact with the cushions behind me.

I picked up my phone and sent a cold, encrypted text to Lorenzo, bluntly telling him that our betrothal was officially severed.

Twenty minutes later, the front door unlocked with a heavy click.

Lorenzo and Mia walked in together, their shoulders brushing in a way that made my stomach turn.

They were carrying bags of expensive pastries and fresh espresso, playfully bickering over who had fought the hardest to buy the cannolis at the bakery.

They were implicitly flaunting the fact that they had spent the entire night together, oblivious to the storm waiting for them.

A sudden chime interrupted their laughter. Lorenzo checked his encrypted phone to read my text, and the color instantly drained from his face.

Mia peeked at his screen, then looked up at me with a mocking smirk.

"Are you throwing a tantrum just because Lorenzo did not come home to sleep in your bed?" she asked, her voice dripping with fake innocence.

Pivoting instantly, she put on a cloying, victim's tone. "You didn't even ask if I was hurt from my terrible fall last night," she complained, "yet we still went out of our way to bring you breakfast."

I looked at the bags on the counter, thoroughly unimpressed.

"Those are your favorite cannolis, Mia, not mine," I pointed out, my gaze shifting to Lorenzo. "And you purchased them with the same black card used to commission my blood-diamond engagement ring."

My voice was dead and flat as I looked at the fresh, purple bruising blooming on both of their necks.

"I heard your soft chuckle over the phone right after you screamed," I told Mia, stripping away her delusions. "I know you faked the fall to lure him away."

Lorenzo dropped the coffee cups on the table, the dark liquid sloshing over the rims.

He scrambled toward me, his hands raised defensively, claiming Mia was concussed from the fall and he simply stood guard outside her door all night.

He placed his hand over his heart and swore on his honor as a Made Man that he had never touched her.

Unmoved, I repeated my words, telling him the betrothal was over and he needed to pack his things immediately.

Mia's gasp was a calibrated performance. The silk of her dress traced a deliberate, swooping arc as she sank, her hands finding the trouser seam of Lorenzo's suit with unerring precision, twisting the fine wool into a set of panicked, ugly wrinkles as she begged him to kneel beside her and apologize. But Lorenzo refused. To bend a knee, especially before me, was a concession his station would not permit. He tore his arm from her grasp and hauled her upright by the elbow, his grip rough on her skin.

He tenderly told her that she never had to kneel for anyone, then turned his dark, angry eyes on me.

"Why can't you act like a mature mafia woman?" he demanded, his tone turning vicious. "You should trust your future husband instead of acting like a paranoid bitch!"

The last fraying thread of my mercy snapped.

I stood up, towering over them in the center of my own home.

"I know the full extent of your treason," I told them, my voice dropping to a low register that carried more menace than a shout. "And if you do not leave my sight this instant, I will summon the Capos to adjudicate according to the old laws."

Mia rolled her eyes, dropping the victim act entirely, and grabbed Lorenzo's hand.

She dragged him toward the door, loudly telling him that I was just being dramatic and acting out some delusional mob-wife fantasy.

The door slammed behind them. I stood alone in the silence and let the mask fall—not into tears, but into something colder. Something sharper. The text I had sent Lorenzo that morning was not a genuine attempt to end things. It was bait. I needed them rattled, off-balance, too busy managing my supposed emotional breakdown to notice the trap closing around them. They had just given me exactly what I wanted: they had walked into my home, flaunted their betrayal, and confirmed every suspicion. Now all that remained was the banquet. And the screen. I turned toward my study to make the final preparations. Tonight, the entire syndicate would witness what I had witnessed. And there would be no coming back from it.
