Chapter 8

The city didn't sleep, it watched from the rooftops and tinted windows, from silent cameras mounted where no one thought to look Milan pulsed with quiet surveillance. And tonight, somewhere beneath that glittering surface, a war had just begun.

Inside a dimly lit apartment across the city, Sofia leaned back in her chair, her eyes were fixed on the glowing screens in front of her. There were six monitors positioned in different angles.

The screen was lined up with traffic cams, street feeds and private security grids she definitely wasn't supposed to have access to. Her fingers moved lazily across the keyboard, but her eyes were sharp and focused.

"Come on..." she muttered under her breath.

A grainy image sharpened on one of the screens. It was a black SUV with no plates of course.

"Amateurs." Sofia smirked faintly.

Her fingers moved faster now, pulling up adjacent feeds and tracking the vehicle's movement across multiple cameras. It had appeared twenty-three minutes ago outside Matteo's daycare.

And then everything went dark as the camera blacked out. It was clean, calculated and professional.

Sofia's expression shifted, Nah, that wasn't amateur, it was intentional.

"Okay..." she whispered, sitting up straighter now. "Now you have my attention."

She cracked her knuckles once, then dove into firewalls, encrypted feeds and private networks layered beneath public systems. Whoever these people were, they had resources but so did she.

Lines of code reflected on the glasses that tested on the bridge of her nose as she worked, bypassing block after block until...

There.

A flicker from one camera that they had probably missed in their sweep.

"Got you." Her lips curved slightly.

The screen showed the back entrance of the daycare. The door still closed then it burst open.

Sofia's expression hardened.

Two men stepped out first with their weapons drawn and them was a small figure.

Her stomach dropped.

"Matteo..." she whispered.

The little boy struggled slightly, confused and scared, but not screaming yet. One of the men lifted him easily, carrying him toward the SUV.

Sofia's jaw tightened.

"No, no, no..."

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up location tracking, rerouting traffic cams, marking their direction.

"Think, Sofia," she muttered. "Think."

Call Isabella? Bad idea, she'll definitely lose her mind.

Call the police? Nah... that's useless.

There was only one option left, the one she had been avoiding as her gaze flicked to another screen which contained a file that contained the name, Lorenzo De Luca.

Sofia exhaled slowly.

"Well," she said under her breath, "guess we're doing this."

******

Ten Minutes Later

Lorenzo's car didn't slow down as it cut through the city streets and highways.nInside, the air was cold, silent and deadly. His men sat in the front, focused, alert.

But Lorenzo?

He was something else entirely, he sat still and controlled. But beneath that control was precise rage, the kind that destroyed things permanently.

His phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number but he ignored it. It buzzed again. And again.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"Boss, you're sure you don't wanna answer it," one of his men said cautiously. "It could be intel."

Lorenzo picked up the phone slowly.

"Speak up" he ordered.

After a pause came a voice, a woman's voice. Smooth, confident and annoyingly calm.

"You're about ten minutes too slow." came the voice on the other end.

"Who is this?" Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

"The person currently tracking your son."

Silence crawled in as every man in the car tensed.

"Explain." Lorenzo's voice dropped dangerously low.

On the other end, Sofia leaned back in her chair, one leg crossed over the other, eyes still scanning the screens.

"They took him eighteen minutes ago," she said casually. "In a black SUV with no plates, they changed route twice which was smart, but not smart enough."

"How do you know this?" Lorenzo asked as his grip on the phone tightened.

"Because I'm watching them." Sofia responded.

"Send the location." he replied

Sofia smirked slightly, that's so straight to the point and she liked that.

"Ah," she said, "see, that's where things get interesting."

" Look if you're wasting my time..." Lorenzo's patience snapped just a fraction.

"I'm saving your son," she cut in smoothly. "Let's not confuse the two."

After a sharp and tense bout of silence Lorenzo spoke again.

"Who are you?"

Sofia tilted her head slightly, considering.

"Well...I'm the reason Isabella stayed hidden for five years."

That got his attention and she could feel it through the phone.

"And what's your name," he demanded.

"Sofia." "You'll want to remember it." she added, almost playfully.

Lorenzo's eyes darkened as it all clicked. The missing piece. She was the one who helped Isabella disappear, the one who built the life he couldn't find.

"You helped her run," he said.

"I helped her survive," Sofia corrected.

"Send. The location." Then Lorenzo spoke again.

Sofia's fingers hovered over the keyboard clicking some keys "Already did."

Lorenzo looked at it. There were moving coordinates and then at the road ahead.

"Drive," he ordered.

The car accelerated immediately.

******

Back in her apartment, Sofia watched the feed closely. Her expression shifted slightly, something wasn't right. The SUV had begun slowing down before it turned and came to a stop.

Her brows pulled together.

"Shit! This is... not good." She leaned forward, zooming in.

The doors opened as heavily armed men stepped out, they're where more than before

And then another car pulled up behind them.

Sofia's stomach dropped.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me..." Her fingers moved fast, pulling more feeds, widening the view.

This wasn't just a pickup.

It was a transfer point. A handoff.

And that meant...

"Lorenzo,You're walking into something bigger." she said sharply into the phone, all the playfulness gone now.

"I know." Then his voice came through, cold and unbothered

Sofia's eyes widened slightly, that definitely wasn't the reaction she expected. Then she saw it, on another screen where multiple black cars were moving in from different directions.

Her lips parted slightly.

"Wait...You didn't come alone." she whispered, then laughed softly, low and impressed.

Lorenzo didn't respond, she now understood that this wasn't just a rescue. It was retaliation and a very brutal one.

Sofia leaned back slowly, eyes gleaming with interest.

"Well then, Let's see how this plays out" she murmured.

_____________

On the dark, empty road outside the city, the SUV doors slammed shut. Guns were raised and engines roared.

And in the middle of it all was a small boy sitting trapped between enemies... As Lorenzo De Luca stepped out of his car, walking straight into war.

Chapter 9

The night air was cold and deadly. Lorenzo stepped out of the car without hesitation or fear just like a man who had already decided how this would end. Behind him, doors slammed open in unison as his men followed, armed, silent and waiting for the command that would turn tension into violence.

Across the empty stretch of road, the black SUV idled, its headlights cut through the darkness, blinding and provocative but

Lorenzo's gaze didn't waver.

"Stay behind me," he said calmly.

But his men spread out anyway, they knew this wasn't just a confrontation. It was a setup.

From the phone pressed to his ear, Sofia's voice came through, sharp and controlled.

"Six visible," she said. "There are two more behind the second car that just pulled up."

Lorenzo's eyes flicked slightly to the left, he didn't turn or react but he saw them.

"They're definitely waiting for something," Sofia continued. "This isn't just a simple exchange."

"I know," Lorenzo replied, his voice quiet.

The SUV door opened as a tall, confident man stepped out. He was armed but wasn't the one Lorenzo focused on. His eyes locked onto the backseat as he caught a slight movement from the small figure behind the drivers' seat.

That was his son. Matteo.

His chest tightened for a second, then the feeling was gone replaced by something colder.

Possession.

The man leaned casually against the car.

"You're early," he called out.

"Bring him to me," he replied calmly.

"That's not how this works." The man chuckled. As a second car door opened behind him, more men stepped out with their weapons visible now.

"Lorenzo... something's off. They're too relaxed." Sofia's voice cut in again.

"I can see that." he rasped.

"Then don't walk into it."

Lorenzo began walking in slow, measured steps forward.

"Stop right there," the man warned, lifting his gun slightly.

Lorenzo stopped.

"State your terms," he said.

"It's simple, you walk away," he said.

Lorenzo scoffed as he laughed. His laughter came out cold and dangerous.

"You took my son," he said. "And you think I'm here for negotiation"

"You are not negotiating, you're surviving" he corrected, his smile still plastered on his face.

"Because if you take one more step... he dies," he added.

The words cut through the air like a blade, everything stilled, even the wind seemed to stop.

Lorenzo's gaze sharpened, behind him, his men stood tensed; waiting and watching. One wrong move and it would all explode.

"They're not bluffing." Sofia's voice dropped to a whisper.

Lorenzo didn't respond. His eyes never left the man in front of him.

"Who sent you?" he asked.

"You really don't know?" The man asked, tilting his head slightly.

That was just enough for Lorenzo to know that they weren't a random rival gang. This was someone who knew him. Someone close and bold enough to use his son.

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

"This is your last chance to walk away," the man drawled.

"Mommy...?" A soft, shaky sound broke through the heavy silence.

Lorenzo's breath hitched as he squeezed his eyes shut. That was Matteo's. His son's voice was filled with fear and confusion, looking for someone who wasn't there.

Something inside Lorenzo shifted and it wasn't rage. It was something more deeper and dangerous.

He took a step forward.

"Lorenzo, DON'T," Sofia snapped through the phone.

"I said stop!" The man raised his gun instantly.

Lorenzo didn't stop. Didn't slow down or even blink.

"You don't touch what's mine," he said quietly.

And immediately everything exploded. Gunshots tore through the night and bullets flew around in the air, glass shattered as engines roared.

Lorenzo moved faster than anyone expected and in one clean and precise shot. The man in front of him dropped instantly. It wasn't over yet as more men rushed in from behind and from all sides.

That was exactly what Sofia warned about.

"It's an ambush!" one of Lorenzo's men shouted.

It was too late. The second group opened fire as Lorenzo ducked behind the SUV his son was in, grabbing the door handle, his eyes locked onto Matteo.

The boy was frozen and terrified.

"Stay down!" Lorenzo barked.

Matteo didn't understand and stayed exactly where he was. Another shot rang out too close and fast. Lorenzo's instincts kicked in.

He reached in, pulled the boy out, holding Matteo's small body in his arms just as he was about to turn, a shot tore through the air, heading straight toward them.

Chapter 10

The gunshot cracked through the night, shifting everything. Lorenzo turned fast, too fast for the eye to fully catch as his arm tightened around Matteo, pulling the boy hard against his chest as he twisted his body...shielding him.

Then a sharp impact hit as a bullet tore into Lorenzo's side, he let out a low, controlled grunt but he didn't fall or even slow down.

"Get down, Now!" he barked.

This time, Matteo listened, the boy dropped, crouching behind the SUV door as Lorenzo shoved him there, positioning his own body between the child and the gunfire.

Chaos erupted around them with Lorenzo's men returning fire with brutal precision. One went down, then another, the third dropped behind the second car.

But the attackers weren't retreating rather they were relentlessly pushing forward.

"Lorenzo, you're hit!" Sofia's voice cut sharply through the phone.

"I'm fine." he mustered be he wasn't because bllod was already seeping through his shirt, warm and steady.

But it didn't matter, nothing mattered except his son; Matteo.

Lorenzo crouched lower, grabbing the boy's shoulder.

"Look at me."

Matteo's wide, frightened eyes lifted slowly, tears clung to his lashes, but he didn't cry or scream. He was calm and strong and those blue eyes; quite identical to his, Loreenzo saw all of it immediately.

This is definitely his son.

"Stay behind me," Lorenzo said firmly. "Don't move unless I tell you to".

Matteo nodded.

Another gunshot rang out, too close shattering the side mirror above them, the glass exploded.

Matteo flinched.

Lorenzo's hand tightened slightly on his shoulder and his body still shielding him.

"It's okay," he said, his voice calmer now, steadier than the storm around them. "I've got you."

And he meant it.

"Take the kid!" one of the attackers shouted from across the road,

And that was the line, something in Lorenzo snapped completely as he stood, fully exposed with his gun raised, he fired lethal and precise shots.

Two men dropped instantly.

The rest hesitated, for a second and that second was all Lorenzo needed.

"MOVE!" he ordered his men.

They surged forward, closing distance and breaking formation. Turning defense into offense.

From the phone, Sofia's voice sharpened again.

"Lorenzo, there's another vehicle approaching fast from your left!"

He turned to the black sedan speeding towards them, it's headlights cutting through the darkness.

"Seems like backup, boss" one of his men muttered.

"No,it's extraction" Lorenzo said coldly.

The car swerved sharply as the doors flung open before it even fully stopped. There were more men; armed and organized.

This wasn't a random hit. It was all planned.

"Lorenzo... you need to get out of there. This is bigger than we thought." Sofia's voice dropped.

"I'm not leaving him." he replied simply

"I know...but if you stay, they'll box you in..."

A bullet struck the ground near Matteo. Lorenzo reacted instantly, pulling him tighter behind cover. His jaw clenched.

"Put in some smoke!" he barked.

One of his men tossed a canister, it hit the ground and exploded into thick gray smoke. Visibility dropping instantly as shouts of confusion filled the air.

"Stay with me." Lorenzo grabbed Matteo, then he moved fast through the smoke.

His men covered them, firing blindly but effectively, keeping the attackers disoriented.

"Right side... go!" Sofia guided him through the phone.

"There's a gap between the vehicles, move now!"

Lorenzo followed without hesitation through the smoke and the chaos. Bullets tore through the haze, grazed his arm.

He didn't stop or even react. All that mattered the most to him was the small hand gripping his shirt.

They broke out of the smoke into an open space. One of his cars screeched to a halt beside them as door flung open.

Lorenzo pushed Matteo inside first, then climbed in after him.

"Go!" he ordered.

The driver didn't hesitate, the car shot forward, gaining distance from the assailants and heading towards escape.

Behind them, gunfire still echoed but was fading getting further and softer, until finally, there was silence.

Inside the car, everything felt heavy and different for Matteo as he sat pressed against the seat, breathing fast, his eyes wide, trying to process everything that had just happened.

Lorenzo looked at him, really looked at him for a calmer first time.

His son. Blood and Legacy.

"You're safe now," Lorenzo said quietly.

" Uhhh....you got shot." Matteo blinked painting at Lorenzo's stained shirt.

Lorenzo glanced down briefly at the blood. Then back at him.

"It's nothing." he replied.

Matteo didn't look convinced but didn't say anything as awkward silence settled between them.

"...are you my dad?" hw asked softly.

The question hit harder than the bullet but Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He leaned back slightly, exhaling slowly.

Then he looked at the boy again.

"Yes, I am"

Matteo stared at him, processing what he just heard.

"Mommy said you were dangerous." Matteo continued.

A faint, almost invisible shift crossed Lorenzo's face.

"I am." he responded, his honesty surprised even him.

Matteo hesitated.

" So...are you going to hurt us?" he asked, his blue eyes glistening with the car's dull lightening.

"No." Lorenzo's gaze hardened.

The car sped through the city streets, taking them to somewhere safe and controlled. But Lorenzo's mind was already moving ahead because this wasn't close to over.

They had planned this, layered it and anticipated him. It only meant one thing. This wasn't just an attack, it was a message.

And Lorenzo De Luca does not ignore messages. Instead, he answers them with interest.

His phone buzzed again, he stared at it for a second.

"Speak." he clipped.

"You know... you should have just walked away, Lorenzo." the voice came through, calm and dangerously familiar.

Lorenzo froze, he knew that voice and knew it too well.

"Marco." His grip on the phone tightened.

"Took you long enough." the voice tinged as a soft chuckle echoed through the line.

Lorenzo's eyes darkened completely. He had just found the final piece and just confirmed the betrayal.

"You used a child, My child" Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to lethality. "."

"Awww... don't make it emotional. It's all business." Marco sighed softly.

"Then it's over." Lorenzo finished. Marco laughed again.

"No, It's just beginning, nothing is over until I say so" he said quietly.

The line went dead.

Lorenzo lowered the phone slowly, his expression unreadable but in his eyes was war.

Pure war.
