Chapter 7: Sold to the Highest Bidder**
The darkness was suffocating. It pressed against me from all sides, making it impossible to know where I was. My body ached, especially my neck where I had felt the sting before everything went black. Slowly, the world started to come into focus. My head pounded, and a dull pain throbbed behind my eyes. I tried to move, but something cold and heavy bit into my wrists. Chains.
Panic surged through me as I realized I was bound. My heart raced, and I struggled to free myself, but the chains only rattled with each attempt, mocking my efforts. I forced myself to stop and take deep breaths, trying to calm the wild beating of my heart.
"Celeste," I called out weakly, reaching for my wolf. But she was silent, too weak to respond after the chase and whatever had been injected into me. I was on my own.
As my eyes adjusted to the dim light, I could make out the outlines of other figures in the darkness. I wasn't alone. The sound of shallow breathing and quiet sobs filled the small, enclosed space. Other girls, just like me, chained and scared.
One of them, a girl with matted brown hair and tear-streaked cheeks, looked up at me. Her eyes were wide with fear, and when she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper. "They took us... we're going to be sold."
The words sent a chill down my spine. Sold. Like cattle, or property. My blood ran cold as the reality of my situation sank in. I had been captured by rogues, and now they intended to auction me off. I couldn't help but wonder who would want to buy someone like me—a disgraced, broken wolf who had just been banished from her pack.
The door to the room creaked open, and the sound of heavy boots on the wooden floor echoed ominously. A large, burly man with a scar running down his face appeared in the doorway. His eyes were cold and cruel as he surveyed the room, taking in the sight of the girls chained to the walls.
"Get them ready," he growled to someone behind him. "The auction is starting soon."
Two other men stepped into the room, each holding a set of keys. They began unlocking the chains, roughly yanking the girls to their feet. When they reached me, I tried to resist, but a sharp tug on the chains around my wrists forced me to comply. My legs were unsteady, and I nearly collapsed when they pulled me upright.
The girls were herded out of the room, one by one. The hallway outside was narrow and dimly lit, the walls lined with crude wooden planks that creaked underfoot. I could hear distant voices and the clinking of coins, growing louder as we were led further into the building.
We were ushered into a larger room that was filled with an oppressive heat. The stench of sweat and unwashed bodies was overwhelming. I glanced around, my heart sinking as I took in the sight of a makeshift stage at the far end of the room. A group of men and women—rogues, by the look of them—were seated around the stage, their eyes gleaming with anticipation.
A tall, thin man with a greasy smile stood on the stage, addressing the crowd. "Welcome, welcome!" he announced, his voice oily and smooth. "We've got a fine selection for you tonight. All strong, healthy, and ready to serve in any way you see fit."
My stomach churned with nausea. This was worse than I had imagined. We were nothing more than merchandise to these people, objects to be bought and sold at their whim.
The first girl was dragged onto the stage, her eyes wide with terror. The bidding began almost immediately, the crowd shouting out numbers with greedy excitement. I tried not to listen, but the sound of their voices was impossible to ignore. Each bid was like a nail being driven into my heart, a reminder that this was my fate now.
One by one, the girls were sold off to the highest bidder. Some went quietly, their spirits already broken. Others struggled and fought, only to be subdued by the guards and dragged away like animals. I clenched my fists, trying to keep my own fear at bay. I couldn't let them see how scared I was. I had to stay strong, had to find a way out of this nightmare.
Finally, it was my turn. The greasy man on the stage grinned as I was pushed forward, his eyes raking over me with an appraising look. "And now, we have something special," he purred, his voice dripping with sleaze. "A fresh capture, straight from the Nightwalkers Pack. A real beauty, and strong too. Just look at her!"
I stood frozen, my heart pounding in my chest. The crowd murmured among themselves, their eyes locked on me with a mix of curiosity and desire. I wanted to disappear, to vanish into thin air and escape this hell. But there was nowhere to go, no way out.
The bidding started, and I felt like I was standing outside of myself, watching as they shouted out numbers, each one higher than the last. The room seemed to close in around me, the air thick with the scent of desperation and greed.
"Sold!" the man on the stage finally declared, his voice cutting through the noise. "To the Alpha King of the Blackwood Pack!"
The room fell silent. My heart skipped a beat. The Alpha King? What did he want with me? A murmur of surprise rippled through the crowd, but no one dared to question the decision.
The man who had bought me stepped forward, his face hidden in the shadows. He was tall and imposing, his presence commanding the attention of everyone in the room. His eyes, dark and intense, locked onto mine as he approached.
For a moment, I felt a flicker of something—fear, curiosity, maybe even hope. But it was quickly snuffed out by the harsh reality of my situation. I had been sold, and now I was at the mercy of the Alpha King.
As I was led away from the auction, I couldn't help but wonder what awaited me in the Blackwood Pack. I had heard stories about the Alpha King—stories of his ruthlessness, his power, and his ability to crush anyone who stood in his way. Would he be just another tormentor, another cruel master who would use and discard me like so many others had? Or was there something more to him, something that I couldn't yet see?
The chains around my wrists clinked softly as I was escorted out of the building and into the cold night air. The stars above twinkled brightly, indifferent to the pain and suffering that had just taken place below. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I glanced back at the building, my mind racing with thoughts of what might come next.
Whatever awaited me in the Blackwood Pack, I knew one thing for certain—I would not go down without a fight. I was Luna Nightingale, and I would survive this. I had to.
The night air felt cold against my skin as I was led out of the auction hall. My mind was still reeling from everything that had just happened. I had been sold like an object, something to be bought and owned. I wanted to scream, to fight back, but my body felt too heavy, too exhausted to resist. Not that I could fight back anyway. The person who had both me was an Alpha , my tiny hits would be brushed off like dust.
As I glanced up, I finally got a clear look at the man who had purchased me. He was tall, with dark hair that seemed almost black under the moonlight. His eyes were intense, a deep shade of blue that made me shiver for reasons I couldn't understand. There was something about him, something that made the air around him feel charged, like a storm was brewing just beneath the surface.
And then it hit me, hard and fast, like a punch to the gut. That feeling—the pull, the unmistakable connection—he was my mate. My second mate. It was almost impossible, something that was supposed to be a legend, a myth. But here he was, standing right in front of me, and I couldn’t deny the bond that tugged at my very soul. My second mate? An occurrence as rare as the Blood moon.
I tried to keep my face neutral, tried to hide the shock and confusion that threatened to overwhelm me. This couldn’t be happening. After everything with Ryker, the betrayal, the rejection, how could the Moon Goddess do this to me? Was this some kind of twisted joke?
He hadn’t said much since buying me, just a few words to the rogues who had been handling me, and now here we were, standing in front of a sleek black car. He opened the door and gestured for me to get inside. My body moved on its own, obeying the silent command even as my mind screamed at me to run, to get away from this stranger who was supposed to be my second chance at love.
But as I slid into the passenger seat, the warmth of the leather against my skin, I couldn’t help but feel the exhaustion creeping up on me. It had been so long since I’d had any real rest, and the stress of the day was starting to take its toll. I wanted to stay alert, to stay on guard, but the comfort of the car was too much. My eyes grew heavy, and despite my best efforts, I felt myself slipping into unconsciousness.
I fought to stay awake, but the fatigue was too strong. As the car started to move, the gentle hum of the engine lulled me further into a daze. I could feel his presence beside me, strong and steady, and for a brief moment, I allowed myself to feel safe, to let my guard down just a little.
But the last thought that crossed my mind before sleep claimed me was that nothing could ever truly be safe for me—not anymore. Not after everything that had happened.
As darkness took over, I was left with one final, lingering thought: Why him? Why now?
What kind of game did the moon goddess decide to play with me again. Have I not suffered enough?
Did she dislike me that much ?
When I finally gave in to sleep, I could still feel the strange bond pulling at me, like a thread connecting my heart to his. But whether it was a blessing or a curse, I couldn’t yet say.
The only thing I knew for sure was that things were about to get even more complicated.
The car came to a gentle stop, and I was pulled from the depths of my restless sleep. My eyelids felt heavy, and it took a moment for me to remember where I was. The scent of leather and pine filled my senses, grounding me as I slowly opened my eyes.
The first thing I noticed was the firm grip around me. I was no longer in the car; I was being carried. Panic surged through me, but then I caught his scent again—strong, comforting, and undeniably my mate's. It was the same man who had bought me at the auction. Atlas. The Alpha of the Blackwood Pack.
I tried to steady my breathing as I looked up at him. His expression was unreadable, a mask of cold indifference, but his arms held me with surprising gentleness. It was a strange contradiction—his hard, imposing exterior and the way he cradled me like something fragile. I didn’t know what to make of it.
We passed through the entrance of what must have been his pack’s territory, and immediately, I could feel the tension in the air. The members of the Blackwood Pack were gathered, their eyes filled with suspicion and curiosity as they watched their Alpha carry me in. Whispers spread like wildfire through the crowd, and I could feel their judgment seeping into my bones.
I stiffened in his arms, wanting nothing more than to shrink away from all the attention. I was an outsider, a stranger to them, and worse—I was an omega from a different pack. To them, I was nothing.
Atlas’s grip on me tightened ever so slightly, as if sensing my unease. He said nothing, his expression still cold and distant, but the way he held me made it clear that he wasn’t going to let anything happen to me. At least, not yet.
He finally came to a stop in front of the gathered pack members. I could feel their eyes boring into me, each one silently questioning why their Alpha had brought me here. The tension was palpable, thick enough to cut with a knife.
“This is Luna Nightingale,” Atlas said, his voice calm but authoritative. “She will be staying with us from now on.”
There was no explanation, no further details, just a simple statement of fact. But it was enough to send ripples through the crowd. I could hear the murmurs, the disbelief, and the skepticism. Why would their Alpha, a man as powerful as Atlas, bring someone like me into his pack?
As he spoke, I could feel a few sharp glares directed my way. Among them was a woman with striking silver eyes. Her gaze was particularly intense, filled with something between resentment and curiosity. I didn’t know who she was, but the look she gave me made it clear that I wasn’t welcome.
Atlas ignored the stares, turning away from the crowd and carrying me through the grand doors of what must have been the packhouse. It was massive, the architecture elegant and sturdy, a reflection of the strength of the Blackwood Pack. Everything about this place felt foreign to me, and I couldn’t help but feel out of place.
We moved down long hallways, each one more lavish than the last. The décor was rich, with dark woods and deep colors, creating a sense of power and prestige. It was nothing like the cold, stone walls of the Nightwalkers’ packhouse where I had spent most of my life.
Atlas didn’t say a word as he carried me up a grand staircase. His silence was unnerving, and I found myself wondering what he was thinking. Was he regretting buying me? Did he see me as nothing more than a burden?
Finally, we reached a large door at the end of the hallway. With a swift motion, he pushed it open and stepped inside. The room was expansive, dimly lit by the soft glow of a fireplace. It was undeniably masculine, with dark furniture and heavy drapes that blocked out most of the moonlight.
He gently set me down on a large, king-sized bed. The softness of the mattress felt foreign against my tired body, and I sank into it, feeling the exhaustion of the day catching up with me.
“This will be your room,” Atlas said, his voice devoid of any warmth. “You’ll stay here until we figure things out.”
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. My throat felt tight, and I didn’t want him to hear the vulnerability in my voice. I didn’t know what to expect from him, and that scared me more than anything.
He turned to leave, but paused at the door. “Luna,” he said, his tone softer now, though still guarded, “get some rest. We’ll talk more in the morning.”
With that, he left, the door clicking shut behind him. I was alone, left to process everything that had happened in the past few hours.
My mind was racing with questions, but there were no answers in sight. All I could do was curl up under the covers, the warmth of the bed doing little to ease the cold fear gnawing at my insides. Atlas was my second mate, but there was no joy in the bond that tied us together. Not now. Not with so much uncertainty hanging in the air.
As I lay there, staring at the flickering flames in the fireplace, I wondered what tomorrow would bring. What kind of life awaited me in this new pack, with a mate who seemed as distant as the stars?
Sleep was elusive, but eventually, the exhaustion won out. My eyes drifted shut, and I slipped into a restless slumber, haunted by dreams of a past I couldn’t escape and a future I couldn’t see.
