Chapter 3

The sky was just beginning to turn pale when I walked out of the Miller mansion.

For a moment, I stopped at the top of the wide stair case. My fingers tightened around the handle of my small suitcase as I looked back at the place I had called home for three years.

The house looked exactly the same as it always had—grand, quiet, untouchable.

But it no longer felt like home.

Maybe it never really was.

I slowly walked down the steps. Each step felt heavier than the last, as if my feet were trying to hold me back.

Three years.

Three years of trying to be the perfect wife.

Three years of loving a man who had never loved me back.

When I reached the gate, the security guard looked at me in surprise.

“Mrs. Miller?” he said carefully. “You’re leaving so early?”

The title made my chest tighten.

I forced a small smile.

“Just Leah now.”

Before he could ask anything else, I walked past him and stepped onto the quiet street.

A taxi was passing by, and I quickly raised my hand.

The car stopped beside me.

“Where to?” the driver asked.

I hesitated for a moment before answering.

“Downtown. Maple Street.”

As the taxi pulled away from the mansion, I leaned my head against the window.

The city of New York was filled with tall beautiful buildings and it was already very bright.

My hand slowly moved to my stomach.

Lucas didn’t believe me.

The thought hurt more than I expected.

But maybe it was better this way.

If he didn’t believe me, then he wouldn’t try to take my child away from me.

I closed my eyes briefly.

“It's just you and me now,” I whispered softly.

My phone suddenly vibrated in my bag.

I frowned slightly and pulled it out.

An unknown number.

For a moment I almost ignored it, but something made me answer.

“Hello?”

“Miss Leah McGraw?”

The man’s voice was calm and professional.

“Yes… speaking.”

“This is Attorney Daniel Carter from Hayes Conglomerate.”

I was surprised.

Hayes Conglomerate?

“I think you have the wrong number,” I said slowly. “I don’t have any connection to Hayes Conglomerate.”

The man chuckled lightly.

“Oh, Miss McGraw. You have a very big connection.”

My heart began beating faster.

“I’m calling regarding the late Mr. Andrew Hayes.”

The name sounded unfamiliar.

“I don’t know anyone by that name,” I replied.

There was a brief pause on the other end.

“Mr. Andrew Hayes was the founder of Hayes Conglomerate.”

My eyes widened slightly.

Everyone in New York knew that name.

Andrew Hayes had built one of the most powerful corporate empires in the country.

But what did that have to do with me?

“I’m sorry,” I said carefully. “But I think there has been some mistake.”

“There is no mistake,” the lawyer replied calmly.

“Mr. Hayes listed you as one of the legal heirs in his will.”

My breath caught.

“…What?”

“Yes. According to his will, you own twenty percent of Hayes Conglomerate.”

The world seemed to stop.

Twenty percent?

“That’s impossible,” I said immediately.

“I’ve never even met him.”

“Actually,” the lawyer said slowly, “you have.”

My heart skipped.

“What do you mean?”

“You were just too young to remember.”

My grip on the phone tightened.

“Miss McGraw, there are documents explaining everything. Your birth certificate… medical records… and letters Mr. Hayes left behind.”

My mind spun.

“I… don’t understand.”

“You will,” he said gently. “But there is another reason I’m calling.”

Something about his tone made my stomach twist.

“What reason?”

There was a short pause.

Then he said quietly,

“You’re currently in danger.”

The words made my heart slam against my ribs.

“…Excuse me?”

“Your inheritance was kept secret for years,” he explained. “But now that Mr. Hayes has passed away, certain people are trying to take control of the company.”

Cold fear crept into my chest.

“And what does that have to do with me?”

“Everything,” he replied.

“Because if you claim your shares, their control becomes impossible.”

The taxi suddenly slowed down at a traffic light.

I looked out the window absentmindedly.

Then my breath caught.

A black car had stopped behind us.

Its windows were dark.

And it had been following us for the last three blocks.

My heart started racing.

“Attorney Carter,” I whispered, “I think someone is following me.”

His voice immediately turned serious.

“Listen carefully. Do not go to your original destination.”

My fingers trembled.

“What?”

“There should be a black car waiting two streets ahead. Our driver will take you to Hayes headquarters safely.”

I turned to look through the rear window again.

The black car was still there.

Still watching.

Fear crawled up my spine.

“Miss McGraw,” the lawyer said firmly, “you need to understand something.”

“What?”

“You are not just inheriting money.”

His voice dropped lower.

“You are inheriting power.”

The traffic light turned green.

The taxi started moving again.

Behind us, the black car followed.

My heart pounded loudly as I realized something terrifying.

My life hadn’t just changed.

It had just become very dangerous.

And somewhere in New York City…

Someone had already started moving their pieces against me.

Chapter 4

My heart was pounding so loudly I could hear it in my ears.

I slowly turned my head and looked through the back window of the taxi again.

The black car was still there.

Still following us.

A cold chill crawled down my spine.

“Driver…” I said carefully, trying to keep my voice steady. “Can you take the next right turn instead?”

The driver glanced at me through the mirror.

“But you said Maple Street—”

“Please,” I said quickly.

Something in my voice must have convinced him because he nodded and turned the wheel.

The taxi took a sharp right turn.

For a moment, I held my breath.

Then I looked back again.

The black car turned too.

My stomach dropped.

“They’re still behind us,” I whispered into the phone.

Attorney Carter’s voice remained calm, but I could hear the urgency in it.

“Two streets ahead you’ll see a black car with a Hayes Conglomerate driver. Step out of the taxi immediately and get into that car.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What if they follow that car too?”

“They won’t,” he replied. “Our driver is trained for situations like this.”

Situations like this?

My life had fallen apart only a few hours ago.

Now I was suddenly in the middle of something that felt like a dangerous movie.

The taxi slowed as we approached the next street.

Then I saw it.

A black car parked near the corner.

A tall man in a dark suit stood beside it, scanning the street carefully.

“That’s him,” the lawyer said.

“Get out now.”

The taxi stopped.

I quickly paid the driver and stepped out with my suitcase.

The moment my feet touched the ground, the man in the suit opened the car door for me.

“Miss McGraw,” he said quickly. “Get in.”

I didn’t hesitate.

The moment I went into the back seat, he closed the door and rushed to the driver’s seat.

Seconds later, the car sped away.

I glanced through the rear window again.

The black car that had been following my taxi drove past the street.

They hadn’t seen me switch cars.

A shaky breath escaped my lips.

For the first time since leaving the mansion, my heart slowed slightly.

The driver spoke through the mirror.

“Don’t worry, Miss McGraw. You’re safe now.”

I nodded quietly, though my hands were still trembling.

The car drove smoothly through the city streets before finally stopping in front of a massive glass building.

I slowly stepped out and looked up.

HAYES CONGLOMERATE

The name stretched across the top of the building in bold silver letters.

My stomach twisted.

This was one of the most powerful companies in New York.

And somehow… I was connected to it.

The driver led me inside.

The lobby was enormous, filled with polished marble floors and glass walls. Employees in expensive suits walked confidently through the building, carrying files and tablets.

Everything felt intimidating.

A woman at the front desk immediately stood when she saw me.

“Miss McGraw?” she asked politely.

“Yes.”

“Attorney Carter is waiting for you.”

She guided me toward the elevator and pressed the top floor button.

As the elevator doors closed, my reflection stared back at me in the mirror walls.

My hair was scattered from the wind outside, my eyes still red from crying.

I barely recognized myself.

The elevator finally stopped.

The doors opened into a quiet hallway.

The receptionist led me to a large office and knocked gently before opening the door.

A middle-aged man stood near the window, holding a thick file.

“Miss McGraw,” he said warmly. “I’m Daniel Carter.”

I stepped inside slowly.

He gestured toward the chair across from his desk.

“Please sit.”

I placed my suitcase beside the chair and sat down, my heart still beating nervously.

The lawyer opened the file in front of him.

“Before we discuss the company shares,” he said, “there is something important you need to know.”

My stomach tightened.

“What is it?”

He pulled out a document and slid it across the desk.

I looked down at it.

It was a birth certificate.

My name was on it.

But the name under Father made my breath stop.

Andrew Hayes.

My fingers trembled as I looked up at the lawyer.

“You’re saying… he was my father?”

“Yes.”

The room felt like it was spinning.

“But… my parents died in a car accident when I was ten,” I said slowly.

“That is correct,” the lawyer replied.

“But they were not your biological parents.”

The words hit me like a stone.

“What?”

“They adopted you.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“My entire life… they were my parents.”

“And they loved you very much,” he said gently. “But Andrew Hayes was your biological father.”

My mind struggled to process everything.

“Then why didn’t he come for me?” I whispered.

The lawyer sighed.

“He wanted to.”

He pulled out a small envelope and placed it on the desk.

“This letter was written by him for you.”

My fingers shook slightly as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The ink looked slightly faded.

I began reading slowly.

Leah,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer alive.

I regret every day that I could not raise you myself. Powerful enemies forced me to keep your identity hidden to protect you.

But the day will come when you must take your place in the Hayes family.

When that day comes, trust only one person.

Ethan Hayes.

I looked up suddenly.

“Who is Ethan Hayes?”

Before the lawyer could answer, the office door opened.

A tall man stepped inside.

He looked around thirty-four, with calm eyes and sharp features. His dark hair covered his forehead, and his presence carried a quiet confidence.

The lawyer stood.

“Perfect timing.”

The man’s gaze slowly moved to me.

Something about his expression softened slightly.

“Leah McGraw,” he said.

My heart skipped.

“Yes?”

He stepped closer.

“My name is Ethan Hayes.”

Then he said the words that made my entire world shift again.

“I’m your cousin… and the next CEO of Hayes Conglomerate.”

And judging by the serious look in his eyes…

My arrival had just changed everything.

Chapter 5

For a few seconds, I could only stare at him.

“My cousin?” I repeated slowly.

The man standing in front of me—Ethan Hayes—nodded calmly.

“Yes.”

My mind was still struggling to process everything that had happened in the past few hours.

Divorce.

Pregnancy.

Inheritance.

Now suddenly… family I never knew existed.

Ethan pulled a chair and sat across from me. His movements were calm and controlled, like someone used to making careful decisions.

“You look overwhelmed,” he said.

I let out a small, breathless laugh.

“Overwhelmed is an understatement.”

Attorney Carter closed the file on the desk and spoke gently.

“Miss McGraw, there are things you need to understand about the Hayes family.”

I tightened my grip on the letter in my hand.

“Start with why my father never came for me.”

The room fell quiet.

Ethan leaned back slightly in his chair before answering.

“My uncle, Andrew Hayes, had many enemies,” he said. “Powerful ones.”

I frowned.

“What kind of enemies?”

“Corporate rivals,” he replied. “People who would do anything to control Hayes Conglomerate.”

Attorney Carter added quietly, “When you were born, there was already a plan to kidnap you.”

A chill ran through my body.

“What?”

“Your father had no choice,” Ethan continued. “The safest way to protect you was to hide you completely.”

My chest tightened.

“So he gave me away?”

“No,” Ethan said firmly.

His calm eyes met mine.

“He placed you with a family he trusted. Your adoptive parents.”

Tears burned behind my eyes.

“They died when I was ten.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“Yes. After that… your father wanted to bring you back.”

My breath caught.

“But by then his enemies had grown even stronger. Bringing you into the Hayes family would have put a target on your back.”

I lowered my gaze.

“So he stayed away.”

Attorney Carter pushed another document toward me.

“But he never forgot about you.”

I looked down.

It was a financial record.

My eyes widened.

“He’s been paying for everything?” I whispered.

School tuition.

Living expenses.

Even the apartment I lived in before marrying Lucas.

All paid through hidden accounts.

A lump formed in my throat.

“He was watching over you,” Ethan said quietly.

Silence filled the room for a moment.

Finally, I spoke again.

“Why reveal everything now?”

Ethan’s expression turned serious.

“Because he’s gone.”

The weight of his words settled in the room.

“With my uncle gone, the people who want control of Hayes Conglomerate are already making their moves,” he continued.

Attorney Carter nodded.

“They believed Andrew Hayes had only one heir.”

“Ethan,” I said.

“Yes.”

“But now they know there’s another.”

My stomach twisted.

“Me.”

Ethan leaned forward slightly.

“You owning twenty percent of the company changes the entire balance of power.”

I blinked.

“Wait… twenty percent?”

He nodded.

“Your father made sure you had equal power to mine.”

I froze.

“You mean…”

“Yes,” Ethan said calmly.

“You and I together control the majority of Hayes Conglomerate.”

The realization hit me slowly.

Which meant something else too.

Anyone trying to take the company would see me as a threat.

My hand moved to my stomach.

Ethan noticed the gesture.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“Is something wrong?”

I hesitated.

Should I tell them?

After everything that had happened with Lucas…

Part of me wanted to keep it secret.

But these people were now connected to my future.

“I’m pregnant,” I said quietly.

Both men looked surprised.

Attorney Carter adjusted his glasses.

“Does the father know?”

I let out a bitter laugh.

“He thinks I’m lying.”

Ethan’s expression hardened slightly.

“Lucas Miller.”

It wasn’t a question.

“You know him?”

“Everyone in the corporate world knows him,” Ethan replied.

His look sharpened.

“And I know he just made the biggest mistake of his life.”

I looked down at my hands.

Lucas’s cold voice echoed in my memory.

“Sign the papers.”

“Stop embarrassing yourself.”

Pain twisted in my chest again.

Ethan noticed the shift in my expression.

“Forget Lucas Miller,” he said calmly.

I looked up.

His voice was firm now.

“You’re not the same woman who walked out of that mansion this morning.”

He gestured around the office.

“You’re Leah Hayes.”

The name sounded strange.

Unfamiliar.

But something inside me stirred when I heard it.

Ethan stood and walked toward the window overlooking the city.

“Right now, the board of Hayes Conglomerate believes they can control me,” he said.

He turned back toward me.

“But they have no idea you exist.”

A small, dangerous smile appeared on his face.

“And that’s about to become our biggest advantage.”

My heart began to beat faster again.

“What are you planning?”

Ethan picked up a folder from the desk and handed it to me.

“Tonight there’s a board meeting.”

I opened the folder slowly.

Inside were documents about Hayes Conglomerate… and its shareholders.

Then my eyes landed on one familiar name.

Miller Industries.

My breath caught.

Lucas’s company.

Ethan watched my reaction carefully.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

“Miller Industries is one of our biggest partners.”

My heart started pounding again.

“You’re not saying…”

Ethan’s smile returned.

“Oh, I am.”

He leaned slightly closer.

“Tonight, Lucas Miller is going to attend that meeting.”

My pulse quickened.

“And when he does,” Ethan continued,

“He’s going to discover that the woman he divorced this morning…”

His eyes locked with mine.

“…is now one of the most powerful shareholders in New York.”
