The Forgotten Luna Chapter 1

For nine long years, Asher Eldridge, heir to the Crescent Moon pack, had given me nothing but empty promises and carefully controlled affection. On the night of my naming-day, he surprised me with something uncharacteristically thoughtful—a carved wooden box filled with vials of moonlit elixir, a rare and powerful healing tonic.

At first, I was touched. The elixirs were valuable, and Asher’s gift seemed genuine. But when I opened the box to examine them more closely, I noticed an inscription on the underside of the lid: “To Lila Thorn—For the brightest light in my shadow.”

My chest tightened. It wasn’t meant for me.

I didn’t confront him immediately, but my instincts told me there was more to uncover. That night, I followed Asher’s scent trail to the cliffs of Shadow Vale, where the wind carried the voices of two wolves deep in conversation.

Asher and Lila Thorn, the pack’s golden diplomat, stood close, their figures illuminated by the moon. I crouched behind a jagged rock, ears pricked as their words drifted to me.

“She’s too soft,” Asher muttered, his tone laced with disdain. “Astrid doesn’t have the strength or the wit to lead beside me. She’s a liability, not a luna.”

Lila chuckled, her voice honeyed yet sharp. “You’re only with her because the elders demanded it. Astrid may have the lineage, but she’s nothing more than a shadow. You deserve a luna who matches your ambition.”

“I know,” Asher sighed. “I’m biding my time. When the season of the blood moon arrives, I’ll challenge the elders. Astrid will step aside, and you’ll take her place.”

My breath hitched. So this was his plan? To cast me aside like a pup no longer useful to the pack?

I didn’t wait to hear more. Bursting from my hiding spot, I approached them with a calmness that belied the storm inside me.

“Planning my replacement already, Asher?” I asked, my voice cold and steady.

Asher didn’t flinch, though Lila stiffened slightly. He turned to me, his expression one of calculated indifference. “Astrid, you shouldn’t eavesdrop. It’s unbecoming of a future luna.”

I barked out a bitter laugh. “Future luna? Is that what you’ve been telling yourself while plotting my downfall with her?”

Lila stepped forward, her gaze dripping with false concern. “Astrid, you misunderstand. Asher and I were discussing the pack’s future, nothing more. You’ve always been too sensitive.”

Asher’s amber eyes hardened. “Astrid, this obsession of yours with proving everyone wrong is exhausting. You’ve always been insecure, always doubting me. No wonder the pack doesn’t respect you.”

I could’ve let their words pierce me, as they had so many times before. But this time, I was done. I removed the carved wooden necklace he had given me, the symbol of our bond, and tossed it at his feet.

“Keep your trinkets,” I said quietly. “And keep her. I won’t play the fool any longer.”

Back at the quarter, I sent a message to the elders, formally renouncing my bond with Asher and my claim to the role of luna.

Asher responded swiftly in the group howl, painting a picture of me as irrational and reckless: “Astrid is overreacting. I’ve done everything to support her, yet she continues to doubt me. This is why she isn’t fit to lead.”

The pack, predictably, turned against me. My mother, ever loyal to tradition, growled: “Astrid, how could you disgrace yourself like this? Asher is the heir! You should be grateful he even looked at you.”

She threatened to disown me, claiming I was squandering the only chance at honor our family had left.

Her words used to sting. Now, they barely registered.

Asher had once been my refuge, his charm and ambition a light in the darkness of my fractured youth. After my father’s betrayal fractured our family, I clung to Asher, believing he could protect me from the chaos.

But his charm was a mask. His ambition came at the cost of anyone who stood in his way—including me.

For years, I had endured his barbs, his manipulation, and the weight of his expectations. Tonight, I finally let go of the burden.

The next morning, Asher returned to the lodge, carrying a necklace of gleaming obsidian beads—the very symbol of leadership I had once yearned for.

“You’re still sulking?” he asked, tossing the necklace onto the table before me. “Astrid, stop acting like a pup denied a treat. You’re making a spectacle of yourself.”

I stared at the necklace, its beauty tarnished by the knowledge of who he truly was.

“I don’t want second-hand symbols,” I said, my voice sharp. “And I certainly don’t want a second-hand mate.”

Asher growled, stepping closer, his dominance radiating off him in waves. But I didn’t flinch.

“You’ve underestimated me for the last time, Asher,” I said, meeting his gaze with unyielding strength. “You may be the heir, but you’ll never be the Alpha of my heart.”
