Chapter 3

Five years later.

The sleek fuselage of a Gulfstream G650 cut through the New York haze, touching down on the private tarmac at JFK with barely a whisper.

The door opened.

A woman emerged, her silhouette framed against the bright afternoon sun. She wore a pristine white Chanel suit and dark, oversized sunglasses that concealed her expression. Her movements were fluid, economical, radiating an aura of quiet, untouchable authority.

This was not Adaline Sinclair.

This was Dr. Elara Vance.

Following her down the steps were two small children, a perfectly matched set of five-year-olds.

The boy, Caleb, was a miniature CEO in a tailored blazer and anti-glare glasses. He held a tablet, his brow furrowed in concentration as he scrolled through what looked like stock market data. His serious expression was a startling echo of a man he'd never met.

The girl, Aria, was his opposite. Dressed in a frothy pink dress, she clutched a plush unicorn and surveyed her new surroundings with wide, curious eyes. Her eyes were the exact shade of emerald green as her mother's.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom waited silently on the tarmac.

A woman with fiery red hair rushed forward, bypassing the chauffeur. "You're finally back!" Amy Sullivan cried, pulling Adaline into a fierce hug.

Adaline returned the embrace, a small, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time. She removed her sunglasses, revealing eyes that were calm, steady, and held no trace of the broken woman who had fled five years ago.

"It's good to see you, Amy."

Amy's gaze dropped to the children, her expression softening into pure adoration. "Caleb! Aria! Did you miss your Aunt Amy?"

Caleb looked up from his tablet, giving a solemn nod. "Aunt Sullivan. Your portfolio's risk-to-reward ratio is suboptimal. We need to discuss diversification."

Aria, however, launched herself into Amy's arms. "Aunty Amy! I brought you chocolate from Switzerland!" she chirped, her voice sweet as a bell.

They settled into the plush leather seats of the car as it glided away from the airport.

"Are you sure about this, Elara?" Amy asked, her voice hushed with concern. "Aunt Eleanor's case... it's a long shot."

Adaline stared out the window at the blur of the city. "She's the only family I have left that matters," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument. "I have to be the one to do it."

Her aunt, Eleanor Sinclair, was dying. Pancreatic cancer. The surgery was radical, experimental, and Adaline-Dr. Elara Vance-was the only surgeon in the world with the skill to even attempt it.

Amy sighed, twisting a strand of her red hair. "And what about... him? Aren't you afraid you'll run into him?"

A wry, humorless smile touched Adaline's lips. "New York is a big city. And besides," she said, her gaze turning cold, "Adaline Sinclair has been dead for five years."

Her voice dropped, becoming flat and hard as steel. "There is only Dr. Vance now."

From his booster seat, Caleb spoke without looking up from his screen. "Mommy, my algorithm indicates a 37.8% probability of a chance encounter with 'that man' within a seventy-two-hour window, localized to the Upper East Side of Manhattan."

Adaline and Amy both stared at him, stunned into silence.

Adaline reached over and ruffled his perfectly combed hair. "What systems did you hack this time, sweetheart?"

Caleb adjusted his glasses with a sigh of adult-like patience. "It's a simple predictive model based on his publicly available schedule and municipal traffic data. It's just math."

A knot of unease tightened in Adaline's stomach. Five years of carefully constructed peace felt suddenly, terrifyingly fragile.

The car pulled up to the Waldorf Astoria. They were escorted directly to the presidential suite.

Adaline immediately shifted into work mode. She opened her laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she pulled up her aunt's complex medical files. 3D models of organs and surgical plans filled the screen.

Aria settled on a plush rug, happily drawing in her sketchbook. Caleb found a discreet corner, his own fingers a blur as he typed lines of code into a custom interface. A tracking program was running on his screen, its target designated by an encrypted codename: 'Project Chimera.'

He was building a digital fortress around his mother. It was his way of protecting her.

Adaline glanced at her children, and the professional mask she wore softened. A fierce, unshakeable love filled her eyes. They were her reason. Her armor. Her entire world. And she would burn down anyone who tried to harm them.
