Chapter 2

Siena POV

The security buzzer echoed sharply through the cavernous penthouse.

Leo jumped off the sofa with a squeal of excitement.

"I'll get it!" he declared, already a blur of motion.

He ran past me without a second glance, throwing open the heavy front door.

A man in a dark suit stood in the hallway.

He was a florist working for one of the Syndicate-owned front businesses downtown.

He carried a massive, sprawling bouquet of rare pink peonies.

Tucked between the delicate petals were dozens of crisp, newly minted hundred-dollar bills.

It was a classic, vulgar display of mafia wealth.

Valentina walked over, her hips swaying with a practiced, deliberate languor, and took the massive arrangement.

She feigned a modest blush.

"Oh, he is too much," she cooed.

She buried her face in the flowers, inhaling deeply as a triumphant smile spread across her lips.

The private elevator chimed, its polished brass doors sliding open to reveal Mrs. Russo, the wife of a neighboring mafia associate. She stepped directly into our private foyer, holding a gift wrapped in gaudy foil.

She stopped and clapped her hands to her cheeks in a pantomime of shock.

"Valentina, look at those blossoms!"

Mrs. Russo leaned in, her eyes gleaming with gossip.

"The Capo is always sending you flowers. I have never seen a man so passionately devoted."

The florist nodded respectfully, adjusting his collar.

"Don Cassio ordered these himself," he confirmed.

He looked at Valentina with a knowing smile.

"He has been ordering this exact arrangement for you for seven consecutive years, ma'am."

The florist chuckled softly.

"He even takes those heavy prescription pills to suppress his severe pollen allergy just so you can have fresh peonies in the house."

The math hit my brain like a hollow-point bullet.

Seven consecutive years.

I had been married to Cassio for eight.

The number meant their affair began in the second year of my marriage.

It started long before I was ever deployed to the cartel warzone.

An invisible hand seemed to close around my heart.

I remembered standing in a cold, empty kitchen on our third anniversary.

I had asked Cassio why he never bought me flowers.

He had looked at me with cold, calculating eyes.

"We are in the underworld, Siena," he had reprimanded. "Practicality is survival. Flowers are a waste of resources."

I realized in that moment he was never against romantic gestures.

He was never against wasting resources.

He simply reserved every ounce of his devotion for his mistress.

Valentina puffed out her chest, showing off the diamond bracelet and the cash-stuffed flowers to the neighbor.

"Cassio provides for me."

She lowered her voice, though she made certain everyone could hear.

"He funnels almost all of his Capo earnings and his offshore accounts directly to my private trust."

Valentina sighed happily.

"I am the luckiest woman in the Family. He ensures I never have to lift a finger."

I stood frozen by the console table. I stared fixedly at the words 'seven consecutive years' on the florist's bill. My mind, like a set of rusted gears, began to turn, fitting the memory of me standing alone in that cold kitchen on our third anniversary perfectly into this sordid new timeline.

Cassio was a struggling Capo when we married.

He had no real influence, no generational wealth.

I was the elite Fixer.

I owned the legitimate front businesses, the penthouses, and the high-risk operational payouts.

Cassio had insisted we keep our illicit operations separate for the sake of our safety.

It became sickeningly clear that he had systematically drained my legitimate funds under the guise of protecting our assets.

My blood-soaked hazard pay.

The money I earned taking bullets in the dark.

It was nothing but an extra revenue stream for Cassio to fund Valentina's lavish lifestyle.

To avoid arousing suspicion, I kept my head down and began to slowly gather the discarded wrapping paper from the floor. The menial task was a convincing excuse to remain in the room.

Seven years. For seven years, every bullet I took, every drop of blood I spilled, every scar I earned in the Syndicate's dark wars—had been converted into peonies and diamonds for the woman who was now sleeping in my bed, raising my son, and spending my money. And the man I had called my husband had been the architect of it all.

Chapter 3

Siena POV

Mrs. Russo delivered her gift and offered a final, conspiratorial wave, stepping back into the private elevator alongside the florist.

The heavy steel doors clicked shut, sealing us inside the oppressive luxury of the penthouse once again.

I tightened my grip on the handle of the cleaning caddy, the bones of my knuckles showing white under the strain.

I kept my head bowed, scrubbing at a nonexistent scuff on the marble floor to justify my lingering presence.

Valentina's diamond-encrusted phone buzzed, the sound loud against the countertop. She glanced at the screen, a triumphant smirk crossing her face, and tapped the speakerphone button.

"Carmela, darling," Valentina purred.

My mother-in-law's raspy voice crackled from the device. "Is everything ready for the Blood Oath today? I want that useless ghost's memory erased completely."

Valentina paused in her arrangement of the peonies, running her hands down her perfectly flat, sculpted stomach in a gesture of vain satisfaction.

"Everything is perfect. And don't worry, Carmela. I never had any intention of ruining my body with a pregnancy."

"Cassio understood that completely," Valentina continued, her voice dripping with venomous pride. "So, he simply borrowed Siena's womb to breed his heir. It was the perfect plan."

The marble floor seemed to drop out from under me.

The low-frequency hum of the high-end ventilation system suddenly became deafening, vibrating up through the rubber soles of my cheap work shoes until my knees felt numb.

Under the cover of my oversized uniform, my thumb pressed the record button on the concealed Syndicate device in my pocket, capturing every damning word.

She cast a proprietary glance at Leo, who was busy playing with the empty velvet jewelry box on the rug.

"We are taking our Blood Oath before the Don today to make our union official."

Valentina smiled, a chilling, predatory curve of her lips.

"After today, Leo will finally call me Mother."

The word 'Mother' hit me harder than any bullet ever had. The child I had carried, nursed, and loved—the child whose first word had been 'Mama'—was about to be handed to another woman as if I had never existed.

A memory flashed behind my eyes.

It was five years ago.

I was at the zenith of my career, handling a massive weapons shipment for the Family, and my mother-in-law, Carmela, had stormed into the Syndicate warehouse.

She caused a massive scene in front of the underbosses, her voice a shrill echo against the corrugated metal walls as she screamed that I was a barren, useless wife who cared more about guns than giving her son an heir.

The public humiliation had threatened my standing in the Syndicate.

And Cassio had played the peacemaker.

He had convinced me to step back from active duty, just for a year, to have a child and calm his mother down.

I had trusted him completely.

I had been naive enough to believe my birth control had failed.

The chilling truth now settled into my bones. I dug the nails of my rubber-gloved hand into my palm until the slight, sharp pain forcibly halted the spinning in my head.

My pregnancy was a calculated sabotage by Cassio and Carmela from the start.

I was nothing more than a high-ranking breeding mare, a vessel designed to give Valentina a clean, perfect life.

Valentina snapped her lacquered fingers at me, a sharp sound that broke my trance.

"Stop standing there like an imbecile."

She pointed to a stack of large, framed canvases leaning against the far wall.

"Clear out those old wedding portraits. They are refuse. I want them in the incinerator before Cassio gets home."

I looked to the corner.

My own face, smiling in a white dress next to Cassio, was half-hidden behind a potted plant.

In its place of honor hung a massive, newly framed Family Portrait.

It was a masterpiece of studio lighting and composition, printed on archival paper that gave the subjects the solemn gravity of old royalty.

Cassio sat in a deep-buttoned velvet chair, looking regal and powerful.

Valentina stood behind him, her hand resting intimately on his shoulder, as Leo sat on Cassio's knee.

Standing proudly next to Valentina was Carmela, smiling warmly at the woman who had stolen my life.

Carmela had known all of it.

She had endorsed this entire, ruthless usurpation from the very beginning.

I stepped closer to the painting, my eyes scanning the bottom corner of the heavy, gilded frame.

There was a small brass plaque stamped with the photographer's mark and the date.

May 18th.

The exact day I was taking cartel bullets in a dusty Mexican courtyard, bleeding out for the very family that had already erased me.

They had posed for this portrait while I was choking on my own blood, while the medic was digging shrapnel out of my chest, while my heart stopped twice on the operating table. They had smiled for the camera. And I realized, staring at their frozen, perfect faces, that my death had not been an accident they adapted to—it had been a gift they had been waiting for.
