Chapter 2

The storm of passion passed, leaving a quiet stillness in its wake. Julian moved to get out of bed, his movements efficient and detached. He would go to the guest room, or perhaps drive back to his estate in Greenwich. It was their unspoken rule, the one line they never crossed: they never spent the entire night together.

Chloe watched the muscles in his back shift as he reached for his pants. Eleanor's words echoed in her mind, a relentless, cruel mantra. The game is over. A panic she had never known before seized her, cold and sharp. This was it. This was the last time.

Logic screamed at her to let him go, to start the clean break Eleanor demanded. But her heart, that foolish, traitorous organ, refused to listen. She couldn't let it end like this, with him walking out the door as if it were any other night.

His hand was on the doorknob when her voice, small but clear, cut through the silence.

"Julian... can you stay? Just for tonight."

He froze. Slowly, he turned, his expression a mixture of surprise and scrutiny. In three years, she had never asked this. She was always the one who understood the boundaries, the one who never demanded more than what was offered. She was always, as Eleanor had once put it, "sensible."

Her heart hammered against her ribs. She was already preparing for the rejection, for a coolly logical reason why it was impractical. She even had an excuse ready—I just had a nightmare—to cover for her lapse in composure.

But he didn't refuse. He just stared at her for a few long seconds, his gaze unreadable. Then, he let go of the doorknob and walked back to the bed.

He didn't speak. He simply lay down beside her and pulled her into his arms, her head finding its familiar place on his chest.

The unexpected tenderness broke something inside her. A hot sting filled her eyes, and she buried her face against him, inhaling his scent, trying to absorb a warmth that was never truly hers to keep. The words—We have to end this—were right there, lodged in her throat, but they wouldn't come out. It felt like trying to swallow shards of glass.

His arm tightened around her, as if sensing the tremor that ran through her body. His voice was a low rumble against her ear. "Go to sleep."

But she didn't sleep. She lay awake all night, listening to the steady, even rhythm of his breathing, her mind a battlefield. She tried to rationalize his staying. He was tired. It was a whim. It was anything but love. The clarity of that thought was a separate, sharper pain.

In the suffocating darkness, she rehearsed the breakup speech over and over, a silent, desperate play. Each time, the words failed her. She had allowed herself to fall for him, far deeper than she had ever admitted, and the knowledge was devastating.

As the first hint of grey light filtered through the windows, she felt him stir. She squeezed her eyes shut, her breathing even, feigning sleep. She felt his gaze on her for a moment before he carefully slipped out of bed. His movements were quiet, deliberate, so as not to wake her.

The door clicked shut, leaving her alone in the vast, silent room. She had lost her nerve, defeated by one last, stolen moment of warmth.

Chapter 3

The morning sun streamed into the room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Julian was long gone. On the nightstand, a crisp piece of his personal stationery lay where his phone had been. It held a single line of neat, decisive script: the number for his private driver.

It was so typically Julian. Thoughtful in its efficiency, yet reinforcing the unbridgeable distance between them.

Chloe stared at the note, the weakness of the previous night burned away by hours of silent anguish. She couldn't delay any longer.

Taking a deep breath, she picked up her phone and dialed his number. It rang five times before he answered, his voice sharp and preoccupied. In the background, she could hear the muffled sound of a senior executive giving a report.

"Chloe?" he asked, his tone all business.

Her stomach clenched. She closed her eyes, summoning every ounce of strength she possessed. "Julian," she said, her voice flat and steady. "Let's end this."

The line went dead silent. Even the background noise vanished. She could picture him perfectly: frowning, raising a hand to dismiss everyone from his office.

After what felt like an eternity, his voice came back, colder than she had ever heard it. "Reason." It wasn't a question. It was a command.

She delivered the line she had rehearsed in the dark. "I'm tired of it. I want a different kind of life."

Another silence, this one heavier, more suffocating than the last. She held her breath, waiting for the explosion, the dismissal, anything.

Finally, two words. "Understood."

The click of the disconnected line was deafening. No questions. No arguments. He had processed her departure like a failed merger, a line item to be closed out.

The strength drained out of her. She collapsed back onto the bed, a choked sob finally escaping her lips. The tears came then, hot and useless.

Just as she felt herself starting to unravel completely, her work phone buzzed on the nightstand. The caller ID read Megan Price, her intern.

Megan's voice was thin and panicked, on the verge of tears. "Chloe! It's gone! The Sterling merger contract, the one for the board presentation on Monday—I can't find it anywhere!"

A jolt went through Chloe, pulling her abruptly from her personal hell. She remembered the contract. A thick, blue folder. She had been the last one to handle it after Julian reviewed it.

"I've looked through the entire filing room, twice!" Megan wailed. "If we don't have it for Monday, we're dead!"

Chloe's head throbbed, but a sense of duty overrode the pain. "Don't panic, Megan," she said, her voice regaining its professional calm. "I'll handle it. Just stay put."

She hung up and forced herself off the bed, her limbs feeling like lead. She walked towards the bathroom, the reflection in the mirror showing a pale, hollowed—out version of herself. The breakup had shattered her, but her responsibilities wouldn't wait. She had to go back to the one place she never wanted to see again.
