Chapter 8

Charlotte POV:

The day of the Gala arrived with a storm. Thunder rattled the windows of my shack, but I wasn't there.

I was in the presidential suite of the city's finest hotel, surrounded by a team of stylists Jaden had sent.

My hair was styled in cascading waves of gold. My makeup was flawless, hiding the dark circles and the fading bruise on my cheek.

But it was the dress that mattered.

It was royal blue. The color of the deep ocean, the color of the night sky. It was made of AURA's finest silk, designed to ripple like water with every move. It was a dress fit for a Queen.

My parents were there. My father, the old Alpha Glover, looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"We were blind, Charlotte," he said, his voice thick with regret. "We let the Barnes family trample on us because of the old alliance. But seeing what he did to you... throwing you in a silver cage..."

He gripped my hand. "Tonight, the Glover Pack breaks the alliance. We stand with you."

I nodded. "Thank you, Papa."

We drove to the Barnes Estate. The rain had stopped, leaving the air crisp and clean.

The ballroom was packed. Every Alpha from the surrounding territories was there. The air was thick with pheromones and power plays.

When I walked in, the room went silent.

I wasn't the crippled girl in the grey rags anymore. I walked with my head high, my limp barely noticeable thanks to the adrenaline. The blue dress caught the light, making me glow.

Bryant was on the stage, giving a speech about the "prosperity" of the pack. Kalia stood beside him, wearing a white dress that looked like a cheap wedding gown.

He saw me. He faltered in his speech. His eyes widened.

For a second, I saw the old desire in his eyes. The Mate Bond flickered, trying to reattach itself.

But it was too late.

I walked to the center of the room. The crowd parted for me like the Red Sea.

"Charlotte?" Bryant said into the microphone, his voice echoing. "You... you look..."

He didn't finish.

Because the double doors at the far end of the hall were blown open.

A pressure descended on the room. It wasn't just an Alpha Aura. It was heavier, ancient, crushing. It felt like the sky was falling.

Every wolf in the room, from the lowest Omega to the visiting Alphas, fell to their knees. Their instincts screamed at them to submit.

Only I remained standing.

Through the doors walked a man. He was tall, with shoulders broad enough to carry the world. He wore a black tuxedo that seemed to absorb the light. His eyes were the color of molten gold.

Jaden Holt. The Lycan King.

He didn't look at the kneeling crowd. He didn't look at the trembling Bryant on the stage.

He walked straight to me.

The scent hit me then. Not rain and mud. But a storm. Ozone, lightning, cedar, and something uniquely him . It rushed through my veins, waking up every cell in my body.

Mine, my inner wolf whispered. Not with sadness, but with triumph.

Jaden stopped before me. The crushing pressure vanished for me, replaced by a warm, protective blanket.

"My Queen," he said, his voice deep and smooth like velvet.

He took my hand and kissed my knuckles. Sparks-literal, blue sparks-danced across our skin where we touched. The crowd gasped.

Bryant scrambled off the stage.

"King Holt!" he stammered, bowing low. "We... we weren't expecting you."

Jaden ignored him. He offered me his arm.

"Shall we?" he asked me.

I took his arm. We turned to face the stage. To face Bryant.

Bryant looked confused, terrified, and jealous all at once. "Charlotte? What is this?"

I took a deep breath. The microphone was near. I stepped up to it.

I looked Bryant in the eye.

"I, Charlotte Glover," I said, my voice ringing clear and strong, "reject you, Bryant Barnes, as my mate."

The silence that followed was deafening.

Chapter 9

Charlotte POV:

The words hung in the air, heavy and final.

Rejection is not just words. It is a metaphysical severing. It is tearing a soul in half.

Bryant staggered back as if I had physically punched him. He clutched his chest, his face turning pale.

"No..." he whispered. "You can't."

"I can," I said coldly. "And I do."

I felt a sharp pain in my own chest, like a rubber band snapping, but then... relief. The constant, aching pull toward him was gone. The muddy scent that had plagued me for years vanished, replaced entirely by the crisp, electric scent of the man beside me.

Bryant fell to his knees. He gasped for air, sweat pouring down his face. The pain of being rejected by a Fated Mate is excruciating-it feels like your wolf is dying.

"Why?" he wheezed, looking up at me with bloodshot eyes. "I am your Alpha!"

"You were never my Alpha," I said. "An Alpha protects. You destroyed."

I stepped forward, pulling down the collar of my dress to reveal the angry red scars on my neck and shoulder. The crowd gasped.

"These are burns from a silver cage," I announced, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Bryant Barnes locked me, his mate, in a cell coated with silver because his mistress wanted a spa day."

Murmurs erupted in the hall. Locking a pack member in silver without trial is a violation of the Great Covenant. Doing it to a mate is blasphemy.

"Lies!" Old Alpha Barnes, Bryant's father, rushed the stage. "She's a liar! She's mentally unstable!"

He raised his hand to strike me.

A low growl vibrated through the floorboards.

Jaden didn't move a muscle, but a wave of pure kinetic force slammed into the Old Alpha. The old man flew backward, pinning him against the wall.

"Touch her," Jaden said, his voice calm but terrifying, "and I will erase your bloodline from history."

He stepped up beside me, placing a possessive hand on my waist. The sparks flew again, visible to everyone.

"She is my mate," Jaden announced to the room. "My chosen. My second chance. And the future Queen of all Lycans."

The crowd went wild. A Second Chance Mate for the King? It was the stuff of legends.

Bryant looked up, tears streaming down his face. The realization was finally hitting him. He hadn't just lost a girl. He had lost the Queen. He had thrown away a diamond to play with a piece of glass.

"I... I accept your rejection," he choked out. He had no choice. The pain wouldn't stop until he accepted it.

The moment he said the words, the bond shattered completely.

I felt light. I felt free.

Jaden turned to the crowd.

"The Barnes Pack is under investigation for crimes against the Crown," he declared. "Until further notice, their Alpha status is suspended."

He looked at me. "What is your will, my Queen?"

I looked at Bryant, huddled on the floor, and Kalia, who was trying to sneak out the back door.

"Get them out of my sight," I said.

"Guards!" Jaden barked.

Royal enforcers swarmed the room. They grabbed Bryant and his father.

As they dragged Bryant away, he looked back at me. His eyes were empty. He looked at Jaden standing beside me, radiating power and love, and then he looked at himself.

"Charlotte!" he screamed, a sound of pure regret.

I turned my back on him.

I looked up at Jaden. His golden eyes were warm, full of a promise that terrified and thrilled me.

"Let's go home," he whispered.

I nodded.

As we walked out of the ballroom, leaving the ruins of the Barnes dynasty behind us, I felt something stir deep inside me.

My wolf.

She didn't just howl this time. She stretched. She growled. And for the first time in my life, I felt her claws prick the back of my mind, ready to break free.

The White Wolf was waking up.
