Chapter 5.
Evelyn POV.
Our mouths laid on top of each other like we have been lovers.
I looked into his eyes. I squeezed my brow, curiosity filled me. I hope he will say something. Something meaningful about these unknown entities.
Who barged into the room, not just any room. One of the rooms in the palace mansions where the newly wedded alpha and his Luna are sleeping. In short, one of the safest rooms in the pack.
"Never mind," He whispered back. His warm breath laced with alcohol, caressed my skin.
"Have you ransacked the bathroom?" Their leader asked. His voice was distant.
The other quickly moved into the bathroom. I could hear the footsteps of his shoes approaching.
Our eyes lit up in shock behind the door. Alpha James quickly placed his finger tip on my lips. A sign of quietness.
Do not shake. Danger lurks. My breath seized. I looked into his eyes and fear gripped me. Sweat trickling down my face.
Hand on the knob. It turned. The bathroom door creaked open. It made a funny sound that danger is here. We glue ourselves like well flattened snakes at the bark of a tree, ready to attack his prey.
"Let's get out of here!" The voice from the bedroom snapped, "no sign of anyone here."
The one peeping into the bathroom replied, "cleared!"
He turned, and looked at the other wolf who was pacing around the room in anger.
"I saw Alpha James coming into the room not long ago, and Luna Evren had been in the room just immediately after the party. I asked guys to keep their eyes on them."
He retracted his footsteps back into the room. If he had fully gotten into the room, tilted the door a little bit, behind him, he would have seen us. He would have seen how we had perched to the back of the door.
"When you are not smart enough to give correct intelligence!" The other wolf voice snapped.
"Let's get out of here before anyone meets us here."
Not long. Their footsteps disappeared. The door shut.
I heaved a sigh but something caught my attention. Something important.
Alpha James wanted to hug me but I held back his arm.
"But, wait..."
He turned and looked at me. His eyes were devoid of nervousness or panicking which was the exact opposite of mine.
I just saw death. Someone just came in to threaten or exterminate me.
"Those guys called my name..."
I sought alpha James' faces for an answer. Still nothing.
"Why are they after my life?"
He looked into my eyes, smiled, and placed a wet peck on my forehead. It is nothing,
"Nothing?" I quickly cut-in.
"Yes nothing, " he answered, putting up a smile.
I didn't want to press too much. All I want for us is to continue what we started. So it could afford me the opportunity to carry out my plan. Sorry, my father's plan.
I paced my footsteps behind him as we walked out of the bathroom in stack nakedness.
"It's just normal pack business between some unruly people who don't want to see us together. Unfortunately, they have chosen today to strike."
He picked his clothes on the floor and started to put them on.
He turned to me, bent low and pecked me on the forehead.
"Give me a few minutes, my Luna. I have business to handle."
He stepped out of the room fuming with rage. I could hear his footsteps fading away.
"Fuck!" I balled my arms into fist as I slammed it onto the mattress repeatedly.
'Plan failed. Is he coming back into the room?' I said to myself.
If he failed to come back. It means I am screwed. What will I tell my father? That I couldn't chip Alpha James.
A baby task of this manner I couldn't successfully carry out? I think I am screwed.
Father wouldn't blink twice before he removed me from his plan. From the scheme of things.
I pray within me for Alpha James to come back into the room. But minutes turned to hours but yet, he didn't show up.
I looked around but I couldn't find anything that was close to a male possession to signify that this room is his .
I gravitated to the wardrobe. Just a few female shoes and bags. This room is meant to house alpha James'concubine or one night stand or...
I picked my undies, scattered on the floor. Would It be stupid of me to remove the hair clip and hide somewhere safe since I was not sure if he is coming back into his room.
The following morning I woke from bed with a knock.
Check everywhere in the room. Alpha James didn't show up.
"Fuck!" I muttered. Balled my hand and jammed it against the other in disappointment. I ran my hand through my hair.
Alpha James didn't show up. Not even his break light.
Then a knock on the door.
I rearranged myself properly. No one should see me moody.
" Please, your breakfast is ready," the word emanated from the doorway. "Can I bring it now?"
I paused a little bit before answering.
"Yes, you can come in."
Antonia, one of the attendants who had applied my makeup the previous day, entered the room wearing her palace uniform. She carried a tray laden with food and fruit, which she carefully set on a nearby stool.
She looked around, checked corners of the room and bathrooms to see if there was anyone.
She brought out a piece of paper from her inner wear and gave it to me.
"Boss said, I should give you this."
Chapter 6
Evelyn POV.
"You mean my father?" The words slipped out of my mouth before I could swallow them back. I knotted my brow, my throat dry as sand.
The lady quickly replied, "Yes, you call him father, we call him our boss."
I quickly unwrapped the paper.
It reads : Meet me at Hall 31L by twelve noon today. If you are a minute late, you know the damn consequences.
I folded the paper into a ball as I handed it over to her. My breathing spiked. I knew what this meant.
"Where is Hall 31L?" I asked, as fear enveloped me. "I am new here, I don't know anywhere here."
"He asked me to take you, when it is time."
I checked the time, I have less than two hours to show up.
Father's word means all. Especially not to mention how I had failed my first task on the mission.
Only the moon goddess knows where the bastard had been since yesterday night.
No brake light. Nothing.
The maid was about to step out when I immediately asked, "have you by chance seen Alpha James this morning or did you know his room?"
She pressed her hand on the door knob as she turned to me. She looked at me dejectedly and shook her head. Like I meant nothing.
Like a child that had come home with terrible grades after his father had sold his last cow.
"I have not seen him today," she moved a little bit away from the door. She lowers her voice I knew mostly because of eavesdroppers who may be sticking their ears probably to the door.
"Let's assume, I have seen him today, so you want me to take you to his bedroom? To do what exactly? That's too immature and a rookie move or have you forgotten the first rule?" The lady let out.
I was shocked to see her say such things, because it was barely twenty-four hours ago she and her friend, Leticia, were the most friendly people on earth. I thought I had seen some companions in the palace.
"Noo... I was just trying ..."
She didn't allow me to finish my statement. Like my words never carried weight in front of her. She turned her back, approached the door, and slammed the door and left.
I could hear the sound of her shoes fading away from the door.
A few hours later, I was in hall 31L, an empty abandoned hall. Everything in it looked perfectly neat.
I never knew there were numerous halls like this in the palace grounds. We walked past hundreds of them before we got there. Even my legs were almost aching.
It was like an empty hall. Not a sort of hall if I am to put it properly, but a kind of interrogation room. Or some kind of empty warehouse. Only two chairs and a table sat at the center of it.
A warning signal that this type of hall does not hold a good review of good things.
Antonia, the young lady who had brought me in, had instructed me to sit and wait. For the next line of action.
It was not until ten minutes later that I sat on a chair, when I heard the footsteps of my father, Elder Cedric, Antonia, and two other hefty guys. Marched in.
Heavy. Determined. I knew I was dead.
Suddenly, my father smiled. While approaching me.
"Oh you have really done well my lovely daughter," my father let out, his walking stick tapping faster as he approached me."I hope you are not hurt in there."
"Father," I breathed, my chest swelling with relief. A relief of acceptance and encouragement.
I sprang up from my feet and opened my arms like a lost daughter who had finally found her father's embrace.
I hardly moved closer to his embrace, very unusual of him, though. When...
A heavy slap landed on my cheek. Like a whip, it cracked through the hall.
So heavy that it took me off balance and the next seconds I found myself on the ground. My butt landed with a heavy thud.
Like that wasn't enough, his walking stick landed on my ribs.
Ahh!" I cried out in pain.
I held my ribs as a sharp pang of pain erupted through my spine.
"You incompetent piece of trash!" My father bellowed. His voice shook the foundation of the building. "I gave you a very simple task to do and you failed!.."
"You bloody fucking fail, Evelyn!"
My chest heaved. Tears swelled my eyes but I swallowed them back.
"It wasn't my fault father..." the words escaped from my mouth.
As I held my ribs, clutched it in pain and held the other hand to my face.
"Shut your trap, stupid fool..." My father bellowed at me.
His voice sent a quake to the foundation of the building as everything on it vibrated under my feet.
"I...I will n...never..."
Three hot slaps rolled in again.
"Please father!.." I begged him as I rolled on the floor like a kid exhibiting the spanking after stealing a portion of cake from her mother's pan.
"...I can never give birth to an incompetent fool." He fired back. His voice was laced with anger which I have never seen before.
"It's ok, friend..." Elder Cedric quickly cut-in, "don't forget she is going back to the palace and you don't have to inflict injury on her that would be obvious and suspicious."
"Going back where?" My father quickly turned to Elder Cedric. Like he had spit out venom.
A dangerous one.
The hall suddenly went silent.
Even the two guards and Antonia shifted backward nervously.
I knew that was the end. It was my fault. I should have gotten the job done. No matter what, I should have.
My father gave out a wicked giggle, " I am warning you for the last time, Please don't get me even angrier with these utterances of yours."
He turned back to me, his jaw clenched so tight as thick vein bulged in his neck
"This discarded piece of trash," he pointed his walking stick at me like a sword, " you will not go back into that palace again."
