Chapter 3

Life after rejection had a particular texture.

Aurora had expected devastation.

She hadn't expected the mundane continuation of everything. The way the sun still rose. The way the pack dining hall still filled with noise and laughter every morning. The way her assigned duties waited for her exactly where she'd left them - the library books to be cataloged, the correspondence to be filed, the small invisible work of a woman the pack had collectively decided didn't require acknowledgment.

She did the work.

She moved through the corridors.

She kept her face neutral and her head down and her hand away from her stomach in public because she was learning, very quickly, that the body had its own agenda and that agenda didn't care about secrecy.

She was managing.

Barely.

But managing.

---

The changes were small enough that she hoped they were invisible.

She stopped going to the dining hall for breakfast - mornings were still the worst, the nausea cresting before she'd fully woken, and she couldn't risk anyone watching her face while the smell of pack food moved through the room.

She ate crackers in her room.

She drank the herbal tea Maren had slipped under her door two days after the annex visit, wrapped in plain cloth, no note attached.

She wore her looser clothes.

She moved carefully.

She was eight weeks along now. Still nothing visible. Still safe, technically.

She kept telling herself that.

She almost believed it.

---

It was the dining hall she missed most.

Not for the food. Not even for the routine of it.

For the invisibility of it - the way a crowded room made one quiet woman easier to overlook. Her absence, she was beginning to understand, was more visible than her presence had ever been.

People noticed she wasn't there.

She knew because she heard them talking about it.

She was good at being overlooked. She was not good at being discussed.

There was a difference, and she was learning it now in real time.

---

Selene noticed on the fourth day.

Aurora knew the moment it happened.

She was crossing the courtyard after her morning library shift - head down, moving quickly, running the mental calculations she ran constantly now: who was watching, which routes were emptiest, how long before her absence from meals prompted someone to ask a question she couldn't answer.

She looked up at the wrong moment.

Selene was standing at the top of the steps outside the main building, talking to Mira and Liss. She was mid-sentence about something that made both girls laugh.

And then her eyes found Aurora.

The laughter continued.

But Selene's eyes didn't laugh.

They sharpened.

That particular, cataloguing sharpness that Aurora had learned to recognize as the opposite of careless - the look of a woman who had built everything she had through the careful observation of potential threats.

She looked at Aurora and something shifted in her expression.

Something that wasn't quite suspicion yet.

Something worse.

Curiosity.

---

Aurora looked away first.

She kept walking.

She counted her steps until she was out of sightline.

Then she exhaled.

*She doesn't know anything,* she told herself. *She can't. There's nothing to see yet. You're fine.*

She pressed her hand against her side - not her stomach, never her stomach in public - and kept moving.

Behind her, she heard Selene's laughter resume.

But she could feel the weight of those eyes on her back long after she'd turned the corner.

---

She tried to return to normal patterns where she could.

She made herself go to the dining hall for lunch, where the smells were more manageable and she could eat enough to look present without risking the morning's particular cruelty.

She made herself walk the regular corridors.

She made herself respond when spoken to - which wasn't often, but often enough that complete silence would have been noticed.

She was performing ordinary.

She'd been performing ordinary her whole life.

She was very good at it.

But she'd never had this much at stake before.

---

She overheard them on a Thursday.

She hadn't been looking for anything. She'd been returning a stack of old correspondence files to the administrative annex off the main corridor - routine work, the kind that required her to move through parts of the pack house she usually avoided.

She was almost to the annex door when she heard Selene's voice from the small meeting room around the corner.

Not raised. Not dramatic.

Selene never needed to be loud. She had the particular skill of making quiet words land harder than shouting.

Aurora stopped.

She knew she should keep walking.

She didn't.

---

"She hasn't been eating with the pack." Selene's voice was precise and unhurried. "Four days now. She leaves the main areas before midday and doesn't return until the corridors are empty."

"Maybe she's just embarrassed." Mira's voice. "After the ceremony, I'd hide too."

"She's not hiding." A pause. The sound of deliberate movement - heels on stone, Selene pacing the way she did when she was working something through. "Embarrassed women mope. They cry in front of witnesses because they want to be seen suffering. They don't move through a pack house like they're calculating every step."

Silence.

"She's calculating," Selene said. "Aurora Vale has been calculating something since the night of the ceremony. I want to know what."

"She's a rejected omega." Liss, this time. Dismissive. "What could she possibly-"

"She was alone with Kael before the ceremony." Selene's voice cut across the other woman's cleanly. "More than once. The Solstice gathering. There were others. I wasn't paying enough attention then." Another pause. "I'm paying attention now."

Aurora pressed herself flat against the corridor wall.

Her heart was hitting her ribs so hard she was certain they could hear it.

*Keep still. Don't move. Don't breathe too loud.*

"What are you saying?" Mira asked.

A long pause.

When Selene spoke again, her voice had dropped further - lower, more deliberate, the tone she used when she wanted to make sure words landed exactly where she aimed them.

"She's not eating. She's avoiding crowds. She moves like someone who is protecting something." Another pause. "She keeps her hand at her side - always her right side, always below the ribs - when she thinks no one is watching."

Silence.

Then Mira's voice, very quiet:

"You think she's-"

"I think it's possible." Selene's voice was completely controlled. Clinical. The voice of a woman making calculations that had nothing to do with emotion. "And if I'm right, it changes everything. A rejected mate carrying the Alpha heir's child is not just an inconvenience." A pause. "She's a threat."

"To the engagement?"

"To everything." Selene's footsteps stopped. "Pack law would give her standing. Not much. But enough. Enough to complicate the succession. Enough to give Kael's father a reason to question the engagement. Enough to make certain council members ask questions about bloodline rights that I do not want asked."

Aurora's hand moved to her stomach before she could stop it.

She caught herself.

Pulled it back.

Her whole body was cold.

"What do you want us to do?" Liss asked.

The question landed simply. Without hesitation.

This was what years of loyalty to Selene produced - women who moved from *what do you think* to *what do you want us to do* without passing through conscience in between.

Selene was quiet for a moment.

One moment.

Two.

"Watch her," she said. "I need to be sure before I do anything. I need you to watch where she goes, when she goes, who she speaks to. I need to know if she visits the healer's annex again."

*Again.*

Aurora's blood went cold.

She already knew about the first visit.

"And if she is?" Mira asked. "If she's actually carrying his-"

Selene's voice came back flat and final.

"If she's carrying his child, get rid of her."

---

The corridor was completely silent.

Aurora stood against the wall with both hands pressed over her mouth and her heart in her throat and every rational thought she had dissolving into the single, overwhelming necessity of not making a sound.

*Get rid of her.*

Not the child.

Her.

She stood there for five seconds.

Ten.

She heard Selene's heels resume their movement inside the room - a different direction, moving away from the door.

Aurora moved.

She walked. Quickly. Quietly. Away from the annex, away from the meeting room, away from Selene's voice still murmuring instructions she could no longer make out because she was already turning the corner and then the next one and then she was outside and the cold air hit her face like something physical.

She pressed herself against the exterior wall.

She breathed.

She looked up at the sky - grey, overcast, a winter sky that offered nothing.

*Get rid of her.*

She pressed both hands against her stomach.

She thought about Maren's voice: *This child should not exist.*

She thought about the voice in the dark: *Protect the heir.*

She thought about pack law and Selene's flat, clinical certainty and the two women in that room who would do exactly what they'd been asked without losing a night's sleep over it.

She thought about how much time she had.

Not much.

She thought about what she was going to do with that time.

That part, she realized, was suddenly very clear.

---

*She didn't go back to the library.*

*She went to her room.*

*She closed the door.*

*She sat on the edge of her bed with her hands in her lap and her mind running faster than it ever had.*

*She had one priority now.*

*Not surviving the rejection.*

*Not managing the grief.*

*Not performing ordinary for a pack that had never seen her as anything more than background.*

*One priority.*

*Get out.*

*Before Selene's watchers confirmed what Selene already suspected.*

*Before get rid of her stopped being a future plan and became a present one.*

*She pressed her hands against her stomach.*

*"I'm getting you out," she whispered.*

*To the small, impossible, world-changing life inside her.*

*"I promise."*
