Chapter 1

Thunder slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, echoing the mess in my chest. Midnight. All of New York blurred into neon streaks and rain pretty, sure, but I didn't have time to care. I was on my knees behind a huge mahogany desk, fingers fumbling so badly I almost couldn't get my backpack open.

Come on, Clara, just get the ledger and get out, I kept repeating in my head.

Julian's life was hanging by a thread somewhere inside the locked-down database of Vance Enterprises. My little brother well, not so little, but he's always been reckless had screwed up royally two days ago. A junior accountant, of all things, getting tangled in a financial mess he barely understood. He panicked and lost a critical encryption key, causing millions to vanish in the company's systems. Sebastian Vance, the ice-cold CEO, didn't lose sleep over accidents. For him, a problem was just a liability to crush.

If I didn't find proof Julian'd been set up, he was looking at ten years behind bars, no questions asked.

I dug out a black flash drive from my pocket and shoved it into the computer tower. A soft blue glow from the monitor splashed across the room, painting weird, shifting shadows. Progress bar creeping forward. Downloading Secure Files... 14%.

"Faster, come on, faster," I hissed, clutching my knees, desperately trying to get my shaking under control. Every tick of the clock felt like I was testing a loaded gun one twist, everything explodes. Sebastian Vance they called him the Tyrant of Wall Street for a reason. He tore people apart. Brilliant, sure. Heartless, absolutely.

45%... 68%... 89%...

And then-click. A heavy, deliberate sound sliced through the storm: the office door unlocking.

Ice shot up my spine. I stopped breathing, frozen solid. The flash drive was still in the computer. I couldn't move, couldn't yank it free. Then came footsteps. Slow. Sure. Far too expensive to belong to anyone nice. Every footfall brought a rush of rain, the scent of leather, expensive cologne cedarwood, sharp and suffocating.

Suddenly, the room snapped alive as the chandelier came on, harsh white light burning straight through the shadows. I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed myself flat under the desk, willing myself invisible.

"You can come out now," someone said. Deep voice, smooth as glass, dripping authority. "The desk won't hide you, little thief."

Well, that was that. I forced myself to stand, gripping the desk so hard the wood bit into my palm. I looked up and yeah, there he was. Sebastian Vance, in the flesh, staring back with eyes like a lightning storm.

He looked unfair it wasn't just money; the man was genetically engineered for intimidation. Six-foot-three, lean but solid, dark hair wet from the rain, suit jacket gone. White dress shirt, sleeves rolled, veins and muscle on show. His face razor sharp lines and a jaw you could cut yourself on. And in his hand, carelessly spinning: a slim, silver encryption key. The key.

"Looking for this?" His lips pulled into a smirk, almost lazy. He caught my stutter like it amused him. "M-Mr. Vance," I managed. "I can explain. I wasn't"

He cut me off. "Save it, Clara." He circled the desk, each step slow and deliberate, and I honestly wanted to run, but my back met the credenza and there was nowhere left.

He stopped just inches away. Heat rolled off him

real, not metaphorical and I flinched as his hand grabbed my wrist, firm and unyielding. My backpack thudded to the floor. His grip burned, and his eyes traced my expression, reading every word I didn't say.

"Your brother's not a thief," he said quietly. "I knew someone was coming the moment you broke through security." His gaze lingered on my lips, his tone dropping lower. "I've been waiting for you."

I swallowed hard. "If you know Julian didn't do it, let him go!" I yanked at my arm, but his hold only tightened, pulling me closer until I felt the steady beat of his calm heart. His composure was infuriating.

"No. Business doesn't work that way, Clara." His other hand trailed down my neck so slow it turned my nerves to static. "Your brother's mistake cost me ten million dollars. That debt gets paid, one way or another. He's got nothing. So it's your turn."

"Me?" My throat burned. "I don't have ten million dollars! Take my life if you have to, just let Julian go!"

"I don't want your life," he whispered. His thumb pressed against my pulse. He watched me fall apart with clinical interest. "I want your face."

"What?"

He almost smiled almost. "The board is threatening to kick me out. They think I'm too ruthless. They want stability an engagement. Tomorrow morning. You're quiet, spotless record, no messy connections-"

"You're insane," I muttered. "Fake an engagement? Never."

He laughed, low and cold, and reached into his pocket for his phone. 9-1-1 lit up the screen. His thumb hovered, ready. "If you walk out, I dial. Julian goes to prison. Or you sign the papers, move in tonight, and put on a show for the world."

For a moment, all I saw was blurred light on the phone screen. I looked up, and his eyes-stone cold gave not a hint of mercy. I was trapped. Say no, lose Julian. Say yes, lose myself.

"I hate you." I spat the words out. They tasted sour.

Sebastian's smirk turned positively devilish. He tossed the phone on the desk, pressed a heavy gold pen into my hand, and wrapped his own over mine, guiding it toward the legal contract waiting next to us. "Good. Hate makes things interesting. Sign, Clara."

My hand shook, but I pressed pen to paper. Just as the ink touched down, the double doors crashed open. A security guard stumbled in, white-faced and out of breath, clutching a tablet.

"Mr. Vance there's a problem. The press just leaked a live video. Someone knows she's in here."

Chapter 2

My hand gave out and the gold pen tumbled from my fingers, making a sharp noise on the desk. I stared at my signature still wet, glaring up at me like proof I'd just given up everything.

Sebastian's voice broke the room in two. "What do you mean, a live video?" He sounded dangerous. The security guard shrank back, trying not to make eye contact. Sebastian's arm tightened around me, pulling me close like I was something expensive he'd just brought home and didn't intend to lose.

No one was breathing easy. The only thing that felt real was the heat from his body pressed against mine. My mind spun out with panic.

"An anonymous source streamed live to a celebrity blog, sir," the guard stammered, holding out a tablet with trembling hands. "They caught Miss Clara entering the VIP elevators with a stolen keycard. The caption says you have a secret midnight guest. Paparazzi are already swarming the lobby."

Sebastian snatched the tablet and studied the screen, jaw clenched so tight a muscle twitched along his cheek. I leaned over before I could stop myself. On the screen, my silhouette flashed through the halls of Vance Enterprises, pixelated but obvious. The comment section rolled by in a blur thousands of people guessing who the mystery brunette could be.

Sebastian cursed under his breath and slammed the tablet onto the desk next to my pen. His glare pinned the guard in place. "Lock down the freight elevators. Nobody from the press gets past the lobby. Clear the garage," he ordered.

"Yes, Mr. Vance," the guard croaked, and slipped out in a hurry, closing the heavy double doors behind him.

Silence settled like a lead blanket. Outside, a storm pounded the windows, thunder rumbling. I forced myself to breathe and tried to shove Sebastian back, but he barely budged. At least he let me step away.

"This doesn't change anything," I managed. My voice cracked. "You've got your contract. Now call off the police. Keep your word. Clear Julian's name."

Sebastian gave a short, bitter laugh, and a chill ran straight through me. He shoved his hands into his pockets and stalked to the window, gazing down at the sirens blaring in the street below.

"You don't understand, Clara," he said quietly, too calm. "The board wants an excuse to get rid of me. They're looking for a scandal. Give them one with you a mysterious guest, the sister of an accountant accused of stealing ten million dollars and they'll shove me out. This isn't a romance; they'll see collusion."

I tried anyway. "Then let me leave another way. I'll slip out the back. No one'll know it was me."

Sebastian finally turned, cold smile erasing every ounce of hope I had left. "You're too late. Algorithms are already matching the footage. But this is just a new angle. Media wants a secret girlfriend? Fine. We'll give them one. We're stepping things up. Tomorrow, you're not just my secret fiancée anymore, Clara. You're my live-in fiancée. As of now."

My chest went ice cold. "What? No. The contract was clear-"

He stepped in, looming close, cutting me off. "The contract says you do everything necessary to protect Vance Enterprises. That's what you signed." He tilted my face up, holding my chin. His eyes burned right through me. "Pack in your head. You're not going back to your apartment. You're with me now."

Before I could shout, he pressed on a hidden panel in the wall. A private elevator slid open, lined in black velvet and gold.

He looked back. "Move."

So that was it. I walked into the elevator, chin high, heart sinking. Sebastian stepped in behind me and the doors closed smooth and final, like a cell door. No trip to the lobby, no cameras. We went straight up, all the way to his penthouse.

When the doors slid open again, my jaw dropped. The place was pure luxury glass walls, white marble everywhere, zero warmth. No photos, no comfort, just empty perfection.

Sebastian didn't miss a beat. He tossed his silk tie onto the couch. "From now on, you don't leave without security. You don't contact your brother or use your old phone. My people will collect your things tomorrow. Officially, you live here."

I just stood there by the door, hugging myself against the chill. My clothes were still damp and the central air bit into my skin.

"And... behind closed doors?" My voice shook. I stared at the massive, empty living room. "What happens here? What do you want from me when it's just us?"

He stopped, stared me down, then prowled across the marble like a predator. He stood too close. I could see the silver flecks in his eyes.

He touched my bottom lip, soft and deliberate. I couldn't move. My brain screamed at me to run but my body wouldn't listen.

"First rule, Clara: in private, we keep this strictly business. We don't share a bed and I don't touch you. But tomorrow, in public? You're mine. You'll smile like you adore me. You'll hold my hand. No one will doubt it."

I swallowed past the fear and forced out, "I get it."

He nodded, finally stepping away. "Second door on the right down that hall's yours. Clothes are in the closet. Get some sleep. Tomorrow, we go live."

I didn't argue. I ran down the hall, ducked into my new room, crawled into the huge bed, and let myself fall apart. I cried for Julian, for my freedom, for signing myself away to a man who could end me.

At some point, I passed out. When I woke up, sunlight flooded the windows. Someone was banging on the door, frantic.

"Clara! Open up!" Sebastian's sharp voice cut through the haze.

I jumped out of bed, yanking the silk shirt straight, and cracked the door. Sebastian stood there, jaw set, flashing a tablet at me.

"What happened?" I asked, heart pounding. "Is Julian all right?"

He barely looked at me. "Julian's fine. But now we have a much bigger problem. It's not just last night's video. Someone leaked a photo of my real ex-fiancée landing at JFK twenty minutes ago and she's posted that we're still engaged."

Chapter 3

The penthouse felt like it shrank around me the second Sebastian shoved his tablet in my hands. My eyes darted over the headline shouting in ugly, red letters on a celebrity news app:

"THE TYRANT'S TRUE BRIDE RETURNS? HEIRESS VICTORIA STERLING LANDS IN NYC AFTER SCANDALOUS SECRET LIAISON AT VANCE HEADQUARTERS!"

Right under that, there she was: Victoria Sterling, breezing through an airport. Honestly, she looked like she was born for this world tall, flawless, wrapped in a cream trench and giant sunglasses, blond waves practically glowing. But it was the screenshot of her social media post that really made my blood freeze:

"Heading home to my one and only, @SebastianVance. Distance only makes the heart grow fonder. See you at the altar, darling. 🤍"

I could barely get my voice out. "Who is she?" I whispered, glancing up at Sebastian's rigid, furious face. "The contract said you didn't have any old family ties or drama. You told me you needed a quiet woman because you were single."

He snatched the tablet back, jaw locked. "We broke off the engagement six months ago," he growled, pacing in front of my bedroom door like he was about to fly apart. "Her family's Sterling Global they own half the phones on the East Coast. It was all a business merger. When I caught her feeding her father insider info, I ended it. Immediately."

"Then why is she saying you're still getting married?" My voice sounded steadier than I felt as I crossed my arms, trying to hide that I was shaking. "If she's leaking this stuff, she's tearing up everything we just agreed to."

He spun toward the window, fists clenched tight behind his back. "Because my board votes on my CEO position at noon. Victoria knows if the board wants 'stability,' a public reunion with her shoots my stock price back up. Her father wants into my company, and this is how they're going to force it. They're cornering me into marrying her."

All I could hear was my own heartbeat stuttering in my chest. Corporate money and boardroom coups meant nothing compared to what really mattered to me. "What about Julian?" I couldn't keep the fear out of my voice, so I just let it out. "If the board pushes you out, you can't protect my brother. You promised me, Sebastian!"

Something inside him shifted when I said his name. He turned, eyes stormy and dark, something wild and dangerous simmering behind them. For a second, I wanted to take a step back. But I forced myself to stand my ground.

Two strides, and he was in front of me, reaching out his hand landing around the back of my neck, steady but not painful. He tilted my face up, letting me see every flicker of the hurricane in his eyes. The scent of him cedar and mint swirled in the air between us. My heart tripped over itself.

"I don't break promises, Clara," he said, voice barely above a growl, vibrating through my bones. "But the rules just changed. Victoria thinks she's trapped me. She thinks I'll pick her money over a scandal. She has no idea who she's threatening."

I could barely breathe. "So what now?" My lips were a whisper from his, and my pulse thudded hard enough he couldn't miss it.

He grinned, slow and deadly. "We're playing her game. Only dirtier. She wants a media circus? I'll give her the whole damn show. You're coming to headquarters with me, right now."

I blinked down at myself oversized silk shirt, bare feet. "Like this?"

"My stylists are already waiting." His thumb brushed under my jaw, gentler, and then his hand dropped away, cold and impatient. "You have thirty minutes to become Mrs. Vance. If you don't sell it to the press, your brother's in an orange jumpsuit by tonight."

Twenty minutes later, I sat frozen in front of a vanity, three stylists attacking me with curling irons and lip gloss. My hair got swept into soft waves, my face painted flawless, and they slid me into an emerald-green dress so expensive it probably had its own security guard.

I barely recognized myself a stranger in the glass: sharp cheekbones, emerald silk, gold stilettos.

Then Sebastian walked in, dressed like a thunderstorm in a midnight three-piece suit. He paused at the door, perfect and powerful, his gaze dragging over every inch of me. I caught a crack just for a second-in his icy mask. He looked almost... impressed.

I tried to cover my nerves with a joke. "Will this do, Mr. Vance?"

He was all business again in a blink. "Perfect." Then he reached out his arm. "Remember, Clara. As soon as we step into that elevator, you are madly in love with me. Don't break the act-not even for a second."

I slid my hand into the crook of his arm, feeling the muscle tense under my palm. "Don't worry, I can act when my brother's life depends on it."

We rode the private elevator down in silence. The air felt like a death sentence. When the doors slid open to the VIP garage, chaos hit a wall of paparazzi, flashes exploding, reporters screaming. Security barely held the line.

Sebastian's arm tightened around my waist, yanking me close as we headed for the armored car.

"Sebastian! Are you back with Victoria Sterling?" someone shouted.

"Who's the brunette? Is this some PR thing?" another voice yelled.

He ignored them, face stone-cold, steering me straight through the blinking madness. I forced myself to look up at him soft smile, adoring gaze. We'd practiced this. I pretended he was my whole world.

Once we were in the backseat, the noise cut out. The SUV peeled away. I let out a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding.

"You did well," Sebastian said, adjusting his cuffs, eyes anywhere but me. "But that was just the warm-up. Victoria's already inside, waiting. She thinks she's running the show."

The air in Vance Enterprises was thick with nerves. Through the glass-walled boardroom, I saw investors shifting, tense. But right outside the doors, sipping a macchiato in her designer suit, stood Victoria Sterling.

As we stepped out of the elevator, Sebastian's hand gripping mine, Victoria spun around. She was all smirks until she saw us. Her good mood curdled in record time.

"Sebastian, what is this?" Her voice went shrill as she pointedly ignored me. "Who is she?"

He pulled me closer, his thumb stroking the back of my hand like he meant it. "Victoria, meet Clara. My real fiancée. We're here to sign before the board."

She actually laughed. "Fiancée? She doesn't even have a ring. The board will never believe this..."

I glanced at my ringless left hand, stomach dropping. She was right Sebastian had forgotten the one thing that mattered most in this show.

But he just smiled, eyes glittering. He turned, blocking Victoria out. "Forgive me, darling," he said loud and clear. "I shouldn't have kept it in my pocket this long."

He reached into his vest not for a box, but for a massive, emerald-cut diamond ring that looked like it belonged in a museum. He slid it onto my finger. Cold, heavy... perfect.

Victoria's mouth dropped open.

"Now," Sebastian said, smiling like he already owned the world, "let's tell the board why you're taking her place."

But before he could open the boardroom door, chaos broke through again his assistant sprinted down the hall, terror written on her face.

"Mr. Vance! Stop! Someone just leaked the accountant's confession the country knows who your new fiancée really is. She's trending as a federal criminal!"
