On my way back from a business trip, I scrolled past a video.
A newborn was abandoned by the roadside, crying so hard.
As a first time dad, I couldn’t help looking at the baby a little longer.
I froze because that baby looked exactly like my son.
I had booked the best confinement center in the city for my wife. I had checked them into a VIP suite. I had employed a nanny and a nursing team to look after my wife and my son full-time.
I broke out in a cold sweat.
My wife didn’t check her phone, so I immediately called the center's manager, Ms. Thompson.
She laughed lightly. “Don’t worry, Mr. Smith. Your wife and baby are perfectly fine. They just fell asleep.”
The next second, she sent me a photo of my sleeping baby.
I stared at the tiny, unfamiliar face.
In that instant, the blood in my body turned to ice.
I was only gone for four days.
So how was my son a different person?
After I got out of the train station, I quickly rushed toward the location of the abandoned baby that appeared in the video.
“Officer! That's my son!”
I squeezed in the crowd, but was stopped by the police. “This abandoned baby was found. We plan to send him to the orphanage. If this were your son, do you have any proof?”
I immediately took out my phone, opened my photo album, and showed the police the baby’s birth certificate and my baby photo when he was born.
After verifying the details, the officer looked at me with a hint of reproach. “Mr. Smith, you need to be more careful with your son. In such cold weather, a baby staying out for half an hour is extremely dangerous.”
I nodded my head and thanked the officer.
I held Lucas tightly and rushed to the confinement center.
I needed to find out what had happened!
When I pushed the door open to the VIP suite, the nanny, Amy Shuman, was arranging the baby supplies.
She had worked at my home for twenty-three years. She was close to me like my mother.
Before I went on a business trip, I had told her to take good care of my wife and my baby.
After hearing the door open, the nanny lifted her head up.
She frowned when she saw the baby in my arms. Her eyes were filled with hatred.
I asked hastily, “Why was Lucas left on the street? Thanks to me…”
She interrupted me and spoke harshly. “Eason. Lucas is fine at the confinement center. Why did you bring back a random baby? What’s going on?”
I was stunned. “A random baby? Amy, what are you saying? This is Lucas!”
Amy took a step forward, wanting to take the baby in my arms.
“I think you have gone mad. Hurry and throw out this random baby!” She was so strong that I almost lost my hold of Lucas.
I was utterly confused.
“Amy, you look closely. This is definitely Lucas.”
Amy moved back as if she saw something dirty.
At this moment, the bedroom door swung open.
My wife, Susan Blackwood, walked in. I immediately relaxed for a bit.
As the mother of her baby, she definitely could recognize her own son.
Unexpectedly, Susan screamed and pointed at the baby in my arms.
“Eason Smith, did you do something behind my back? Why did you bring back a random baby?”
I was completely stunned.
Susan warned me, “Eason, send this baby away! If not, I will divorce you!”
I couldn’t believe what I heard.
Lucas seemed to understand and started crying out loud. He held my shirt tightly with his tiny fist.
Susan and Amy were both closest to me. Why did they team up and deny my son?
I held Lucas in my arms and kicked the door open of Ms. Thompson’s office.
I questioned her angrily, “Why was my son, Lucas, abandoned on the roadside? Who is the baby in the photo you sent me?”
The manager smiled. “Mr. Smith, I think you are mistaken. I will show you the security footage.”
In the footage on her laptop, it was clear that the imposter baby on the bed had never left the room since birth.
“Have a look. Your son has been well taken care of. The baby in your arms…I have no clue where you found him. Only you know the truth.”
In disbelief, I yanked the mouse over and fast-forwarded.
The footage was real, nothing was edited.
Suddenly, the office door was pushed open. Susan’s brother, John Blackwood, brought a few relatives and rushed in.
He patted my shoulder and said, “Eason, are you out of your mind? Why didn't you let Suzy rest when she just gave birth? We’re both men, so I get you…but let’s discuss this after Suzy comes home.”
“That’s right. Do you know how hard it was when Susan was pregnant? How can you bring back a random baby from outside? How can you mistreat your own wife and child for the sake of another woman?!” Susan’s relatives were warning me.
I was so furious. I pointed at the red mole behind Lucas’s left ear and said, “Look closely! My son has a red mole over here, does that baby have it too?”
Susan suddenly rushed in and cried. “John, I’m so wronged. I give him a son, but he brings home a random baby and wants me to pretend it’s mine!”
The manager, Ms. Thompson, wrapped it up and said, “Mr. Smith, look how upset your wife is. How about this? I’ll let the nurse feed some milk to the baby in your arms. You try to calm down, then we'll talk.”
She didn’t wait for me to agree. She quickly called in the nurse and passed me a baby’s milk bottle.
Lucas was hungry. When he saw the bottle, he shook his tiny hands.
I didn’t manage to stop the nurse. She immediately popped the milk bottle into Lucas’s mouth.
Within two minutes, Lucas suddenly started vomiting vigorously. His face turned red and purple, looking as though he was going to die.
I quickly picked him up and patted his back. I saw the nurse secretly hide the bottle behind her back and wanted to sneak out without notice.
I rushed over and snatched the milk bottle. “What kind of milk powder is this? Why does it seem diluted?
The nurse looked away. “It’s…It’s our center’s own formula…”
I looked at the manager, Ms. Thompson. “The milk powder I ordered is imported from Europe and is of premium quality. Why do you switch it and let my son drink something else?”
Ms. Thompson replied with confidence, “Your son Lucas at this center is fed with the best milk powder, but as for the baby you are holding…it’s already a blessing if he gets fed.”
Just when I wanted to argue, Ms. Thompson suddenly reached over and pinched Lucas hard in my arms. He scolded, “How can an abandoned baby be picky about what’s being given?”
Lucas was weak generally. The moment Lucas was pinched, he started crying out loud.
Rage filled me. I clenched my fist and swung at her.
John suddenly charged in from the side and yanked me by the collar. He warned me, “Eason, don’t push your luck. If you keep this up and break my sister’s heart, I swear I won’t go easy on you.”
At this moment, Lucas started vomiting repeatedly again. Every time he took a breath, he shivered hard.
I stared intensely at Susan’s relatives. “If anything happens to my son, Lucas, I will make you all pay!”
Before I could finish speaking, I pushed John away, and rushed out while holding Lucas.
I ran two red lights, and burst into the ER while holding Lucas in my arms.
“Doctor! Please save my baby!”
The nurses and doctors immediately came to help. The red light outside the operating room came on. I took a deep breath in, forcing myself to calm down.
The most important thing right now was to save Lucas. After that, I would look for evidence to prove Susan and her family had been lying all along.
The strongest evidence would be a paternity test!
I took several strands of Lucas's hair off my shirt, then turned around to go to the hospital’s DNA testing center.
When I reached the stairs, a familiar figure suddenly stepped in my way.
“Eason, where do you think you’re going?” Amy stood there, looking at me scarily. Two bodyguards from the confinement center followed her behind.
Amy spoke coldly, “Susan is bleeding heavily at the center after giving birth. She’s in danger so you must come with me!”
I came to my senses. This must be one of their tricks! I stepped back.
Amy looked at me sharply and saw the hair in my hand. “What are you holding in your hand? Are you up to something? Please hurry up and come back with me!”
I shouted, “Amy, you have watched over me growing up. Why are you helping them instead?
Amy looked away for a bit and said sternly, “If you don’t come with me, don’t blame me for getting rough!”
Once she finished talking, she signaled the bodyguards behind her. Two of them immediately came forth and grabbed me by my arms.
I fought back but their strength outweighed me. I could not budge at all.
I was forcefully taken back to the confinement center.
When I pushed open the VIP suite door, I saw Susan lying on the bed, with tears in her eyes.
Ms. Thompson and several nurses by her bedside looked worried.
Seeing that I was being pushed in, the manager blamed me. “Mr. Smith, you’re finally back. What you did at the hospital today was unacceptable! Susan has just given birth, so her body is weak. After you provoked her, she suddenly experienced massive bleeding. They almost had to remove her uterus…”
I looked at Susan sarcastically. “If it were that serious, how can you still be here at the center? There’s nothing here that can save you.”
I walked toward the cradle and looked at the unfamiliar baby’s face. “That's not my son!” I switched on my phone, and opened my photo album. I looked for Lucas’s video and photo when he was born so I could compare them to this baby.
I noticed everything was gone! But a few hours ago, I still showed them to the police!
I panicked.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was a call from the hospital. I answered, “Doctor, how is my son doing?”
The doctor replied, “Mr. Smith, your son has a serious infection and breathing difficulty. He needs a blood infusion now. But his blood type is RH negative, and we don’t have enough blood in our blood bank. Are you or your wife RH-negative? We hope you can come to the hospital and donate right away.”
RH negative! That was not my blood type, but Susan's!
I looked at Susan and begged her. “Lucas needs a blood infusion. Please go to the hospital and save him!”
She stared at me mockingly. “That baby has nothing to do with me. Why must I save him?”
I grabbed hold of her hand and asked her, “He’s the child you’ve been carrying for nine months. You suffered so much when you were pregnant with him. How can you be so heartless now?”
Susan jerked her hand out of mine and let out a cold laugh.
“My son is doing just fine in his cradle. The one in the hospital isn't mine!”
