Chapter 1

My father-in-law had been in a serious car accident, with a steel rod piercing his body and his life hanging by a thread.

The rod was dangerously close to his heart, making the surgery extremely difficult, and it had to be performed by my wife, who was an experienced surgeon.

At that moment, however, my wife was in bed with her first love, completely unaware of the emergency.

I urged her to come back, but she accused me of using this situation as a tactic to get her attention.

On the way back from burying my father-in-law, I ran into Grace Lynn. She rushed over and slapped me hard.

"So, you've been following me here? Can't live without me, can you?"

I shot back, "Whether I can live or not, I don't know, but your father is dead because of you."

Early one morning, I received a call from the hospital.

The doctor informed me that my father-in-law had been in a car accident, with a steel bar piercing his body, and his life was in grave danger.

I immediately dropped everything and rushed to the hospital.

Upon my arrival, I saw a large group of doctors pushing my father-in-law into the intensive care unit.

The attending physician approached me, patted my shoulder, and sighed deeply.

Anxiously, I grabbed his hand and asked about my father-in-law's condition.

The doctor, with a heavy heart, said, "I'm very sorry. Your father-in-law has a steel bar embedded in his body, and it's too close to the heart. I'm afraid there's not much we can do."

Hearing this, my heart sank, and I collapsed onto the floor.

"Doctor, please, you have to save my father-in-law! I'll pay whatever it takes!"

The attending physician looked at me and shook his head.

"This isn't a matter of money; we simply don't have anyone here capable of performing the surgery. If we could get Dr. Lynn, the medical expert, to do the operation, the chances of success would be higher. But... Dr. Lynn is extremely busy and has many patients. It's unlikely we can get her here."

At that moment, hope ignited within me.

Dr. Lynn was my wife, my father-in-law's own daughter.

If I could just get her to come back, my father-in-law would have a chance.

Without hesitation, I dialed my wife's number.

After many attempts, she finally answered.

I could hear her breathy voice on the other end.

I wasted no time and urgently told her to return.

"Where are you? You need to come to City Second Hospital right away."

There was a pause on the line, and then she lazily replied, "What's going on? I'm at work, and I don't have time for your nonsense."

"Your dad was in a car accident and is in critical condition. You have to come back to perform the surgery!" I insisted.

I expected her to rush back upon hearing the news, but instead, she laughed.

"What? You think you can trap me like this? You think this cheap trick will get my attention?"

"You want me to come back? Not a chance! If you tell my dad, I won't return. Let's see what you can do about it!"

With that, she hung up the phone.

Chapter 2

I was extremely anxious and immediately called back, but I couldn't get through again.

Now I was completely panicked.

In this situation, letting my father-in-law wait even a second longer could be life-threatening!

Although my relationship with Grace had broken down, my father-in-law treated me like his own son, and I didn't want anything to happen to him.

I rushed to the hospital where my wife worked, but I came up empty-handed.

I was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, but I was helpless.

I opened social media and saw a post from my wife, who said she was working late, posted an hour ago.

[First time cooking porridge, not good at cooking, but someone drank a lot, I'm very pleased, such a good son.]

The photo was a sweet picture of the two of them hugging, with the address of my wife's first love also attached.

The scene in front of me was painful, but I couldn't care about that anymore.

Right now, my father-in-law's life was more important.

I rushed to my wife's first love's house again. Before I even entered, I heard the sound of moaning from inside.

I barged right in and saw my wife lying on top of her ex, applying medicine to him.

When she saw me, my wife's expression froze, and their playful sounds abruptly stopped.

But only for a second, then my wife calmly got off her ex, looking disdainfully at me and saying, "Well, well, so you dare to stalk me?"

"I work so hard every day, can't you even give me a little basic trust?"

I looked at her and laughed.

Trust?

Is trust that you cheat on me, and I still have to swallow my anger and bear it?

I couldn't be bothered arguing with her, she was already rotten, I didn't want to deal with who she was with anymore.

After dealing with my father-in-law's situation, this marriage must be divorced.

But right now, my father-in-law's life was still more important.

I couldn't be bothered arguing with her, I just grabbed her hand, "No time to waste words with you, if you want to save your dad's life, come with me right away, your dad is still waiting for you in the ICU."

I tightly grabbed my wife's hand, wanting to take her out, but before we reached the door, we were blocked by my wife's ex, Ethan Reed.

Chapter 3

He pushed my hand away and held Grace tightly in his arms.

"You hurt Grace, didn't you? Don't you realize that?"

"I told you, there's nothing between us anymore. Why can't you just believe me?"

I was too tired to argue, so I simply punched him down to the ground and pulled my wife away.

"Our family matters are none of your business."

Ethan lay on the bed, groaning in pain.

Upon hearing this, my wife immediately slapped me, breaking free from my hold, and rushed over to Ethan, her face filled with worry. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, don't worry about me. He's just jealous that I might take you away from him." Ethan pretended to clutch his chest, gasping for air. "I can take a few hits; it's nothing. Just don't let this ruin your relationship."

Seeing Ethan act this way made my wife completely panic. She frantically checked on him all over.

"Are you okay? Is it your heart condition acting up again?"

"How are you feeling? Is there anything wrong?"

Seeing Ethan act this way made me laugh.

Her own father was fighting for his life in the hospital, and here she was, fussing over a man who was clearly faking it.

"I'm really okay, Grace," Ethan coughed a few times for effect. "Your husband thinks we're too close, and I understand his jealousy. We should see each other less from now on."

"Please, don't let me be the reason for any issues between you two!"

I looked at him, smirking sarcastically.

"You're not even convincing at this point!"

"Who has a heart on the right side?"

At this, Ethan's face turned pale, clearly embarrassed.

But it only lasted a second before he composed himself, casually explaining, "It's just that I'm in so much pain that I can't pinpoint where it hurts. If you don't believe me, that's fine; no need to mock me."

Grace held him tightly, her expression showing clear concern. She turned to me and shouted, "Shut up!"

"Is this how you treat him when he's already in this state? How can you be so heartless?"

"I told you, there's nothing between us! Why can't you just believe me? You're the one making a scene here!"

"I'll tell you this: if anything happens to Ethan, I'll divorce you!"
