The first thing Jenna did when she got home was to get rid of all the maids. She held her breath as she ignored the pain in her calf and cleared all their matching items at home. She had bought them over the past few years.
When she saw them, she remembered how Matthew had pestered her to use matching items when they were still passionately in love—keychains, mugs, toothbrushes, and even jackets...
Although they were of little value, he was elated. As far as she was concerned, what had once brought unlimited sweetness was now just a bunch of junk.
Halfway through cleaning up, Jenna received a call from the hospital, saying Matthew was sent to the emergency room.
Staggering, Jenna hurriedly asked the driver to take her to the hospital.
Upon closer questioning, she found out that Matthew was somehow hit by a chandelier. The chandelier was so heavy that it fell on Matthew, causing several fractures to the back of his shoulder and arm. Fortunately, he did not suffer any fatal injuries.
Matthew only woke up the next evening.
Before then, his phone constantly lit up and dimmed. They were all notifications of unread messages and multiple missed calls. Jenna tapped on them to find messages from Luna.
Luna: [Matt, are you okay? Why won't you let me see you?]
Luna: [Shall we give up the plan? I don't want you to arrange a job for me anymore. I just want you to be safe and sound.]
Luna: [Matt, I miss you so much...]
'Plan? A job?' Jenna pondered, confused. Just as she was about to take a closer look, Matthew, who was on the bed, coughed several times and was about to wake up. She had no choice but to mark the messages as unread and put his phone back.
The first second Matthew opened his eyes and saw her, he immediately complained coquettishly to her, "Jenna, my dear Jenna, I'm in so much pain."
Jenna had already kept her emotions in check and calmly asked, "What happened to you? How were you hit by a chandelier?"
Matthew paused for a moment, his expression looking a little evasive. "There was a chandelier that was no longer in use on a shelf in the company's storage room. I accidentally bumped into the shelf and got hit when I went there to get something."
Without waiting for Jenna to say anything, Matthew grabbed her hand, pressed it against his face, and muttered, "It hurts so much. My dear Jenna, hug me and kiss me."
In the past, Jenna loved this childish side of him that he only showed in front of her. Whenever he acted coquettishly, she would put everything aside to coax him. However, this time, she pulled her hand away wearily. "I'm exhausted. I need to get some sleep."
Matthew froze for a moment, but he immediately endured the pain and moved aside to make room for her when he saw her haggard look. "Come on, Jenna. Lie down."
The worry in his eyes did not seem fake. He looked like he was so distressed that he was about to cry. However, the man who loved her so much had repeatedly deceived her.
Jenna tried hard to control her emotions. "Okay, let me know if you need anything."
Matthew immediately covered her with the blanket and gently patted her with the only hand he could use.
For the recent events, Jenna had become a light sleeper. Therefore, when she heard slight noises behind her in the middle of the night, she woke up almost instantly. She did not move and just lay in bed, silently listening as Matthew walked into the bathroom.
He made a phone call. "Stop crying, Luna Bear. I'm fine. Be good. I'll come up with an identity for you in a couple of days and tell Jenna that you're my savior. That way, we can solve the issue of you becoming my assistant. Jenna is grateful and kind-hearted. She'll agree as soon as I mention it. Stop crying, okay? Once you're my assistant, we can be together every day."
The moonlight was ghastly pale, shining through the tree leaves.
With her back to him, Jenna pretended to be asleep but was crying incessantly.
Love was completely subjective. Unfortunately, Matthew had never thought of it as something that should be exclusive. That was why he already had someone else just after 12 years despite promising a lifetime with just Jenna. He even went as far as to set up a plot to trick her, just so his Luna Bear could become his assistant, making it convenient for him to see her every day.
A night breeze blew in through the slightly open window, carrying a slight whistling sound. Jenna clutched the blanket as she cried more violently.
The day Matthew was discharged from the hospital, Jenna picked him up.
The two of them had just gotten into the car when his phone started ringing non-stop.
Matthew glanced down, emotions secretly surging in his eyes. His Adam's apple rolled as he apologized to Jenna, "Jenna, I'm sorry. There's an urgent matter that I need to deal with at the office. Shall I ask the driver to take you back first?"
It was a question, but he did not even wait for Jenna to respond. He hurriedly kissed her on the forehead, got into another car, and drove off.
On her way home, Jenna received an unfamiliar text message as soon as she turned on her phone. It was a screenshot of a chat that included a photo.
In the photo, Luna was wearing a spaghetti-strap slit dress and leaning against a huge floor-to-ceiling window behind her. Her left leg was slightly bent as she looked hazily into the camera.
Luna: [Mr. Simmons, you just recovered from a serious illness. Now, it's time to make your choice.]
Luna: [Are you going to teach me a lesson or are you going home with your wife?]
Matthew only replied with five words: [I'll teach you a lesson.]
Then, Jenna received another text.
[Ms. Scott, I believe we'll meet soon. I look forward to it. ]
Jenna turned off the screen and closed her eyes, trying hard to suppress the pain in her heart. She thought she would get used and grow numb to it after experiencing Matthew's countless lies and betrayals. However, the uncontrollable pain still engulfed her body and seeped into her bones.
Matthew came home late, and Jenna was already asleep. He lay down behind her, wrapping her in his arms as usual. "I missed you so much even though we were only apart for just a while." He nuzzled her neck with the tip of his nose as he spoke. "My darling Jenna, did you miss me?"
Jenna shifted slightly, rejecting his touch and struggling out of his embrace.
Matthew paused. "What's wrong, Jenna?" It was the first time she had rejected his touch. An indescribable sense of panic could not help surging in his heart.
She mumbled as she had her back against him, "It's nothing. I might have caught a cold. I don't feel well and don't want to pass it on to you. You should sleep in the guest room for the next couple of days."
She could not bring herself to share a bed with him any longer. She was afraid she would not resist stabbing him with a knife in the middle of the night.
Sensing the firmness in her tone, Matthew only hesitated for a moment and did not refuse. "Alright. I'll have the family doctor come check on you tomorrow."
Matthew went to sleep in the guest room.
Soon, Jenna's phone vibrated again. It was another message from Luna.
Luna: [Does he never touch you?]
Luna: [Look at what he's done to me. He nearly wore me out. Oh...]
Soon, Jenna received Luna's selfies. All these photos had one thing in common—her neck and collarbone were covered with red marks.
They were so glaringly red that they made Jenna's eyes redden involuntarily. She sat up in bed and quietly gazed at the moon hanging high outside the window.
Matthew had left, but his scent still lingered in the bedroom. It was a minty lemon scent from the cologne that Jenna had personally commissioned for him. However, it was mixed with the cloying scent of jasmine perfume. She smelled it when he hugged her. It was Luna's scent.
Jenna opened the window to let the cool night breeze in. She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, sat at the desk, took out a notebook, and recorded the date.
'Matthew, since you've betrayed our marriage, I'll record the process of your betrayal and lies. This will be the final gift I give you,' Jenna thought.
Perhaps Jenna had caught a cold from the cold breeze all night, but she felt unwell and had a slight cough when she woke up the next day.
Matthew was heartbroken when he saw this. Seeing that she had no appetite, he ordered her favorite stew.
However, the delivery did not arrive for a long time. Jenna called to ask, yet the food delivery platform said that the seller would deliver it themselves. When she tried to contact the seller, she could not get through to them.
After an hour and a half, the doorbell finally rang.
The moment Jenna opened the door, her face was already tinged with anger. "How could you have taken so long..."
Jenna froze before she could finish speaking.
The person standing at the door was Luna. She was covered in mud, carrying a takeout bag. She was staring at Jenna without blinking. After a long time, she smiled faintly and answered, "We finally meet, Ms. Scott. I came to surprise you."
Jenna clenched her fists.
The next second, Luna dropped the takeout bag to the floor. At the same time, she plopped down on the ground, and her eyes reddened immediately. "I'm sorry. I accidentally fell on the way here and hurt my leg. That's why I'm late..."
Jenna said nothing but waited quietly for her next trick. As expected, Matthew's figure soon appeared. He first asked Jenna who was standing in the doorway with an indifferent expression, "Jenna, what happened?"
Then, he looked down at Luna sitting amidst the mess on the ground. He was so shocked that his tone changed. "Why are you here?"
Luna was huddled on the ground with red eyes. The stew had spilled all over the ground, staining her clothes and making her look particularly disheveled.
"Sorry for being late, Mr. Simmons. Your wife probably pushed me out of anger. She didn't push me hard. It's my fault for losing my footing... I just hope you'll intercede for me. It took me a lot of effort to find this job."
Jenna looked down at the pitiful Luna before looking up at Matthew.
However, Matthew did not even look at her. He strode to Luna and helped her up. "What happened to your foot?"
Luna's ankle was still bleeding. "I accidentally fell on the way here..."
"Let's go to the hospital first!" Matthew picked up Luna in his arms and was about to leave.
Jenna could not help calling to him, "Matthew, aren't you going to give me an explanation?"
He paused for a moment before turning around with his eyes lowered. "Luna saved me the day I was hit by the chandelier. Jenna, what you did today has let me down." With that said, he hurried away with Luna in his arms.
Jenna saw Luna turn around and flash her a triumphant smile when she got into the passenger seat of Matthew's car. Jenna's phone suddenly vibrated, and she tapped on it to find a voice message from Luna.
As soon as it played, Matthew's voice rang out. "I only asked you to pretend to be a food delivery rider and deliver her order. How did you get yourself into this mess?"
Luna answered coquettishly, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. I'm just too clumsy."
He sighed helplessly. "I don't mean to blame you. I just feel sorry for you. But don't worry, I'll tell Jenna to arrange a job for you when I get home."
Luna responded, "Okay. You're the best, Matt. I love you."
Jenna then received a provocative message from Luna.
Luna: [Do you like this gift, Ms. Scott?]
