After treating Jenna's wound, Matthew passed her the white roses he bought. With a grin, he said, "Here. I bought you flowers to make amends. There's a fireworks show by the river tonight. Don't you love watching fireworks? How about we go together?"
Jenna was uninterested and was about to say no when he swore sincerely, "Don't worry, Jenna. I'll arrange a wheelchair so that you won't be exhausted. I'll also protect you closely to make sure that the crowd won't bump into you."
Hearing his words, Jenna could only agree.
Matthew immediately smiled and kissed her forehead. "Let's go, then."
The river was crowded with people because of the fireworks show.
Matthew found a relatively safe place and gently lifted Jenna into a wheelchair. He half crouched down in front of her, took the blanket from the bodyguard, and gently covered her legs with it. "The fireworks show will start in ten minutes. Let's wait here for a while."
Jenna hummed in response and looked into the distance.
The breeze blew as the river rippled. The place looked like a scene out of a painting, but she was not in the mood to enjoy the view.
While waiting, Matthew watched her and took care of her at every moment as usual. Since she was injured, he was even more alert as he protected her closely. He was afraid someone might bump into her.
His behavior made Jenna somewhat dazed.
Matthew thought she was worried and comforted her with a smile, saying, "Don't worry. I'm always here to protect you."
'Will you always be here...' Jenna thought as she smiled, but she said nothing.
When there were only three minutes left before the fireworks show, Matthew's phone kept ringing with notifications. He took it out, and a conflicted look appeared in his eyes after his gaze landed on the screen.
Jenna instantly figured out that the lady from the hospital was reaching out to him.
"Did something happen?" Jenna stared at Matthew's face quietly, wanting to know what his ultimate choice would be.
The seconds passed…
Matthew looked down at his phone and finally made a decision. "Jenna, there's a major problem with an order contract. I need to go back immediately and settle it. I'll get the bodyguard to stay here and guard you. I'll hurry back to accompany you as soon as I'm done, okay?"
He chose that lady in the end.
Jenna's hands clenched tightly, and her sharp nails pierced her skin instantly. It stung slightly, like being pricked by a needle. Her heart was experiencing the same pain. "Do you have to deal with it now?"
'Do you really have to see her?' Jenna wondered as she stared at Matthew and demanded an answer from him, but she was destined to be disappointed.
He only coaxed her apologetically, saying, "Jenna, be good. I'll hurry back as soon as possible, okay?"
This time, Jenna said nothing more. Watching Matthew stride away, she calmly ordered the bodyguard, "Wheel me and follow him."
The bodyguard took the handlebars of her wheelchair and followed Matthew without asking much.
From a short distance, Jenna watched as Matthew walked through the crowd and arrived in front of the lady waiting on the opposite shore, bringing her into his embrace.
Loud bangs followed one after another. Clusters of brilliant fireworks exploded in the night sky, blooming fleetingly in the dark sky.
Under the dazzling brilliance, Jenna's gaze once again fell on the two figures opposite who were now locked in a kiss. The emotions that welled up in her heart swallowed her like a thick fog.
"I heard that the boyfriend of the famous love blogger, Luna, specially arranged this fireworks show to confess his feelings to her."
"You're talking about Luna and Matt, right? They're super sweet."
"Yes, those two. They are very sweet!"
Jenna heard the conversation of the two women beside her, and her heart clenched. Her intuition told her that Matt was Matthew.
With trembling hands, Jenna pulled out her phone and searched for Luna's blog. Thanks to her high profile and Matthew's affection, Jenna found her blog almost effortlessly. Her full name was Luna Zachary, and she was seven years younger than them. Matthew affectionately called her Luna Bear.
All her blog posts were filled with Matthew's affection for her. In one instance, she complained about not getting along with her roommate, so he rented her an apartment outside the university and gave her a car with a driver.
Luna loved plush toys, so he gave up his business deals for her and went to buy her two big boxes full of plushies. She filled her couch with them and took a photo for Matthew.
Luna: [This is a love that's exclusive to me, right?]
Matthew: [Of course, it's exclusive to you.]
Jenna read through the blog post and suddenly stopped at one of them.
Luna pestered Matthew for a love confession, and he made her a promise.
Matthew: [I'll surprise you and fulfill your wish in a month.]
Jenna's fingertips on the screen slid down inch by inch, becoming increasingly weak. She pondered, 'It's exactly one month today. It turns out that he had already prepared everything and decided that he wouldn't be accompanying me until the end today. What am I, then? A witness to their love?'
Her heart ached as she pressed her chest hard. The intense pain forced her to bend over and gasp for breath while tears fell from her eyes.
Her love for Matthew had also begun with fireworks. The 18-year-old Matthew had a lot going for him; he was smart, had a strong family background, and was good-looking. He was the Prince Charming of most girls at school, but he only had eyes for Jenna.
Back then, he never avoided his feelings and was not worried about getting lectured by the teachers. He just declared openly, "It's my decision to like Jenna. What does it have to do with her? If you want to punish someone, just punish me. She doesn't know anything. What do you mean by puppy love? There's no such thing. It's unrequited love as I'm still pursuing her."
When faced with everyone's teasing, Jenna would only raise her book and silently hide away. However, her ears would turn red behind the book.
Matthew stood in front of the school building on the eve of graduation with the brilliant sky behind him. He cupped his hands around his mouth to mimic the effects of a megaphone and shouted in Jenna's direction while she was surrounded by people upstairs, "Jenna, I like you! You'll become my wife!"
That year's spring breeze was full of gentleness as it carried her sweet thoughts and blew his white shirt. His school uniform was the ultimate symbol of his youth.
Everyone called them the perfect match and said that they would be together forever. Jenna believed that too, but he had shattered this certainty. He had given away what had once belonged solely to her.
The bodyguard next to her saw that she was crying uncontrollably and hurriedly handed her a tissue. "Mrs. Simmons, are you okay?"
Jenna took it and said hoarsely, "You'd better keep what happened tonight to yourself. If he knows that I saw them, this marriage won't be able to continue, and you'll be punished as well."
"I understand, Mrs. Simmons," the bodyguard replied.
Jenna did not even look back when she left.
Fireworks faded away quickly, and it was hard to return to the past.
From the moment Matthew betrayed her, her relationship with him could no longer be restored.
The first thing Jenna did when she got home was to get rid of all the maids. She held her breath as she ignored the pain in her calf and cleared all their matching items at home. She had bought them over the past few years.
When she saw them, she remembered how Matthew had pestered her to use matching items when they were still passionately in love—keychains, mugs, toothbrushes, and even jackets...
Although they were of little value, he was elated. As far as she was concerned, what had once brought unlimited sweetness was now just a bunch of junk.
Halfway through cleaning up, Jenna received a call from the hospital, saying Matthew was sent to the emergency room.
Staggering, Jenna hurriedly asked the driver to take her to the hospital.
Upon closer questioning, she found out that Matthew was somehow hit by a chandelier. The chandelier was so heavy that it fell on Matthew, causing several fractures to the back of his shoulder and arm. Fortunately, he did not suffer any fatal injuries.
Matthew only woke up the next evening.
Before then, his phone constantly lit up and dimmed. They were all notifications of unread messages and multiple missed calls. Jenna tapped on them to find messages from Luna.
Luna: [Matt, are you okay? Why won't you let me see you?]
Luna: [Shall we give up the plan? I don't want you to arrange a job for me anymore. I just want you to be safe and sound.]
Luna: [Matt, I miss you so much...]
'Plan? A job?' Jenna pondered, confused. Just as she was about to take a closer look, Matthew, who was on the bed, coughed several times and was about to wake up. She had no choice but to mark the messages as unread and put his phone back.
The first second Matthew opened his eyes and saw her, he immediately complained coquettishly to her, "Jenna, my dear Jenna, I'm in so much pain."
Jenna had already kept her emotions in check and calmly asked, "What happened to you? How were you hit by a chandelier?"
Matthew paused for a moment, his expression looking a little evasive. "There was a chandelier that was no longer in use on a shelf in the company's storage room. I accidentally bumped into the shelf and got hit when I went there to get something."
Without waiting for Jenna to say anything, Matthew grabbed her hand, pressed it against his face, and muttered, "It hurts so much. My dear Jenna, hug me and kiss me."
In the past, Jenna loved this childish side of him that he only showed in front of her. Whenever he acted coquettishly, she would put everything aside to coax him. However, this time, she pulled her hand away wearily. "I'm exhausted. I need to get some sleep."
Matthew froze for a moment, but he immediately endured the pain and moved aside to make room for her when he saw her haggard look. "Come on, Jenna. Lie down."
The worry in his eyes did not seem fake. He looked like he was so distressed that he was about to cry. However, the man who loved her so much had repeatedly deceived her.
Jenna tried hard to control her emotions. "Okay, let me know if you need anything."
Matthew immediately covered her with the blanket and gently patted her with the only hand he could use.
For the recent events, Jenna had become a light sleeper. Therefore, when she heard slight noises behind her in the middle of the night, she woke up almost instantly. She did not move and just lay in bed, silently listening as Matthew walked into the bathroom.
He made a phone call. "Stop crying, Luna Bear. I'm fine. Be good. I'll come up with an identity for you in a couple of days and tell Jenna that you're my savior. That way, we can solve the issue of you becoming my assistant. Jenna is grateful and kind-hearted. She'll agree as soon as I mention it. Stop crying, okay? Once you're my assistant, we can be together every day."
The moonlight was ghastly pale, shining through the tree leaves.
With her back to him, Jenna pretended to be asleep but was crying incessantly.
Love was completely subjective. Unfortunately, Matthew had never thought of it as something that should be exclusive. That was why he already had someone else just after 12 years despite promising a lifetime with just Jenna. He even went as far as to set up a plot to trick her, just so his Luna Bear could become his assistant, making it convenient for him to see her every day.
A night breeze blew in through the slightly open window, carrying a slight whistling sound. Jenna clutched the blanket as she cried more violently.
