Chapter 2

Every day, I was put through mandatory rehabilitation sessions. I did not really have time to think about Kris.

When I finally got my phone back, it was filled with missed calls from Kris and his assistant.

I called him back.

Kris’ voice was razor-sharp. “Where the hell are you? Where did you hide the files from my office drawer?”

I was stunned for a moment.

He continued aggressively, “You have thirty minutes. If you don’t bring those documents back, I’m calling the police. Simone, don’t test what’s left of my patience.”

Bewildered, I looked at the female officer beside me.

She had heard everything. She motioned for me to hand her the phone.

She took it and said sternly, “Mr. Flynn, your wife was just released from detention. Her fine hasn’t been paid yet. If you wish to file a police report, you’re welcome to do so here at the precinct.”

Kris simply scoffed and said, “Simone, I’m not in the mood for jokes.”

The next second, he hung up.

I had no idea what was going on, but the officers told me to wait. They would notify Kris to come and pay the fine.

Half an hour later, Kris shoved the door open and strode in.

His face was grim as he confirmed something with the police.

“She’s really been right here for the past ten days? You’re sure she hasn’t left at all?”

The officer said impatiently, “Believe what you want. Just pay the fine first.”

On the way back to the company, I pieced together what had happened from Kris’ conversation with his assistant.

Just yesterday, the bid documents Kris had kept in his drawer had vanished.

It was the company’s most important and tightly guarded project of the year. The only complete copy existed in Kris’ possession.

The bidding deadline was tomorrow.

I could not help but ask, “Did you not create a backup for such important documents?”

The assistant lowered his voice to explain. “Ms. Dynevor accidentally spilled water on Mr. Flynn’s computer. The hard drive was completely destroyed.”

Kris said sternly, “Ruby already feels terrible about it. She’s sensitive. You are not to bring this up around her.”

The entire office was in a state of siege, and everyone scrambled in frantic, silent urgency.

That was everyone except Ruby, who was sitting in Kris’ office chair and idly scrolling through fashion websites.

When she saw me, she smiled and walked over briskly.

“Kris, you found Simone? Did you find the documents as well?”

She intertwined her fingers around Kris’ and gave them a little shake.

“See? I told you she just took them to spite you. You can stop worrying about the bid now.”

Kris’ face was unreadable. A taut silence hung around him.

Ruby’s smile stiffened. Her gaze shifted to me.

“Simone, you didn’t lose the documents, did you?”

When I did not respond, she frowned.

“Simone, I heard that Kris brought up the divorce. What he did wasn’t right, and understandably, you’re upset. But you shouldn’t have taken the documents. Everyone worked hard on it.”

Then, she said softly, “Just return the documents. I’ve talked to Kris. He won’t hold this against you.”

Kris opened his mouth in reluctance. “She didn’t take them.”

Ruby froze. “How’s that possible?”

At that moment, the system issued another command. [Slap her hard. Now!]

I would not dare in a million years to touch the woman Kris loved.

But looking at what was unfolding in front of me, I finally understood.

The system had made me smash the police car to give me an alibi.

Those self-sabotage acts were not meant to destroy me at all.

With that clarity, I swung my arm with every ounce of strength I had and smashed my palm across Ruby’s cheek.

“Stop pretending!” I spat the words the system fed me.

“Who do you think you are, meddling in someone else’s marriage? If you’re so eager to help, focus on yourself first. Keep your eyes off someone else’s husband! You knew I couldn’t produce the documents, so you fanned the flames on purpose. I think you’re the one who took them!”

The air went dead still.

Ruby clutched her face and stared at me in disbelief. “You…”

I slapped her again.

“What? What are you going to do? Don’t talk to me like that! I don’t speak to homewreckers. It makes my skin crawl!”

Chapter 3

“Simone, have you lost your mind?”

Kris finally snapped out of his shock and grabbed my wrist.

Following the system’s instructions, I picked up the glass of water on the desk and threw it in his face.

Kris was stunned as the hot water splashed against his face.

He stared at me as if he were looking at a stranger.

“What’s wrong with you? If I’d known you’d be this excessive, I wouldn’t have—”

I cut him off. “If I’d known you were the kind of man who cheats without shame, I never would’ve saved you!”

The year the Flynn family went bankrupt, Kris’ father jumped from a building. His mother followed him to death soon after.

Creditors broke Kris’ leg and threw him into the sea.

I was passing by in my fishing boat, pulled him out, and took him home.

I thought we were all that we had in this life.

Then, Ruby’s return turned my eight-year marriage into a joke.

The system’s spoilers and interference caught me completely off guard.

Staring at Kris in his wretched state, I regretted saving him for the first time.

Suddenly, Ruby let out a scream.

She swayed and grabbed the desk for support.

“Kris, I feel so dizzy…”

Without even wiping the water from his face, Kris turned and lifted her into his arms.

Without sparing me a glance, he carried Ruby to the sofa and set her down.

I turned to leave, but he called after me.

“Ruby fainted because of you. You’re not going anywhere.”

He hit the intercom and summoned his private doctor.

After listening to Kris’ instructions, the doctor wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.

“Mr. Flynn, although Mrs. Flynn and Ms. Dynevor are both type A, anemia doesn’t necessarily require a blood transfusion. Even if a transfusion is needed, there are other options—”

“That’s too much trouble.” Kris’ voice was icy cold. “Since Simone hit her, she should take responsibility. Draw her blood.”

The system urged me on. [Don’t just stand there. Make trouble now!]

I steeled my nerves and shoved the office door open.

“Urgent need for Type A blood! $100,000 for every 100 ml of blood!”

I turned back and met Kris’ stunned gaze head-on.

“What? Don’t tell me you can’t spare a little money.”

People began to gather.

“Mr. Flynn, Mrs. Flynn, I’m type A. I even have a blood donation certificate. Are you really offering $100,000 for every 100 ml?”

I smiled. “Mr. Flynn here is desperate to save Ms. Dynevor. The more blood, the better.”

Then, I simply walked through the crowd and went home.

Guided by the system, I spent the rest of the day drafting a new divorce agreement.

Kris did not return home until 2 a.m.

He carried the scent of lilies with him.

He had forgotten that I was allergic to lilies.

He picked up the divorce agreement I had prepared and scoffed.

“Simone, are you trying to make me walk away with nothing? Have you lost your mind?”

He tossed another document at me. It was a voluntary organ donation form.

“Enough games! Sign it yourself, or I’ll have someone sign it for you.”

I opened it. As expected, he wanted my kidney.

Kris scribbled an amendment onto the divorce agreement. “Ruby’s health has taken a turn. Help her. Consider it as doing me a favor. I’ll give you $1 million in return.”

He stared at me coldly. “Don’t get greedy. Otherwise, it’ll make me think you saved me all those years ago because you had a hidden agenda.”

He was getting too confident. After that, he went into the master bedroom to sleep.

A cold draft blew in from the window and chilled me to the bone.

Following the system’s instructions, I turned on the computer in the study.

Kris’ social media password was easy to guess. I got it right on the first try. It was the day Ruby went abroad.

He had once tattooed that string of numbers on his ankle.

I took a photo of the organ donation agreement and posted it online.

I also captioned it.

[High reward offered for a matching kidney. $1,000,000 for a match. Serious inquiries only.]

Below it, I attached Kris’ phone number.

At five a.m., the police were pounding on our front door.

Kris was escorted to the precinct in his pajamas.

As both a witness and a family member, I went along too.

The police presented screenshots of posts made from Kris’ social media account, along with records of the IP addresses used to log in.

Chapter 4

“Any form of organ trafficking is a serious criminal offense. Do you understand that this is a crime?”

I nodded. “I know it’s illegal, and even more so to conduct such transactions on an online platform that’s public.”

If it were not illegal, the system would not have told me to post it.

After looking more closely, Kris frowned. “I didn’t post that.”

He shot me a glance. He looked livid.

“Are you denying it?” The officer slammed the table impatiently.

“Take a look at this! Your company employees posted this on a forum last night. You openly ordered a doctor to draw someone else’s blood for Ruby Dynevor and even offered money to encourage people to donate blood. Do you know that’s illegal?”

Kris pursed his lips for a second before saying, “The transfusion didn’t happen in the end.”

The officer snorted and said, “You showed the intent to commit the act. It just didn’t go through.”

Just then, another officer escorted Ruby into the room.

Tears streamed down her face as she threw herself into Kris’ arms.

“Kris, are you okay? This is all my fault. If I weren’t sick, none of this would’ve happened.”

Behind her was the familiar female officer.

The moment she saw Kris and me, her face stiffened. “This case needs a thorough investigation. Their marital relationship presents complicating factors. We cannot treat this as a simple case of disturbing public order.”

Seeing that Kris was about to be handcuffed, Ruby panicked.

She stepped in front of the officers. “Kris didn’t commit any crime!”

As the officers tried to pull her away, she blurted out in panic, “I’m not sick! I don’t need a kidney transplant at all, so he couldn’t have actually been trying to buy organs.”

As soon as she said that, Kris shot to his feet.

“You’re not sick? When you left the country back then, you said it was because you were ill and that your family was forcing you to go for treatment—”

“I got better!” Realizing what she had said, Ruby hurried to explain.

“I was treated overseas. I’m completely cured now.”

Watching from the side, a cold detachment settled over me.

After learning that the Flynn family had gone bankrupt, Ruby had immediately gone abroad, using her illness as an excuse.

At that moment, anyone with eyes could see her excuse for what it really was.

Kris’ lawyer arrived. After negotiating, Kris was released after paying a fine.

On the way home, he was silent the entire time.

I sat in the front passenger seat. In the rearview mirror, I saw Ruby cautiously reach out and rest her hand over the back of his.

“Kris, I didn’t mean to hide it from you. My illness really was cured overseas. You can verify it if you want.”

Her eyes welled up again. “I lied because I wanted to see if you still cared about me. If you hate me for it, you can hit me.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I could never hit you.” Kris turned his hand over to clasp hers.

I turned my head away and ignored them.

The system issued another command in my head. [When you get out of the car, take Kris’ phone.]

I did not argue. It barely counted as theft.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Kris glance at his phone screen at Ruby’s prompting.

Then, he looked up and watched me in the passenger seat.

After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded.

The driver dropped Ruby off first, then turned toward our house.

When we got out of the car, I tapped Kris on the shoulder. “There’s a bug here.”

When he turned his head, my fingers slipped into his pocket and retrieved his phone.

He turned back to the driver and told him to send all the staff away for the day.

“My wife and I need to talk.”

I quickly glanced at the screen. The latest message was from Ruby.

[What happened today was definitely Simone’s doing. Kris, you have to teach her a lesson. Lock her in the house. Get some men to come and scare her.]

I understood at once. That was what Kris was nodding at.

The system asked me, [Do you know what to do this time?]

I nodded. After all the servants left, I followed Kris into the house.

He turned around and said, “I’m going out—”

I kicked him hard in the knee.

Before he could react, I darted out slammed the front door shut.
