Infertile
I squeezed my eyes shut. At this moment, my feelings for Jessica gradually faded away.
By the time three tubes of blood had been drawn from me, I was already lightheaded. Still, Jessica clutched my arm and asked anxiously, "Doctor, since the baby is losing so much blood, shouldn't you take a few more tubes?"
The doctor quickly shook his head and replied, "Madam, we can't do that. Mr. Miller will die if we continue to draw his blood.
Even so, Jessica extended my arm upward without hesitation.
Ultimately, I was forced to have two more tubes of blood drawn. As a result, I collapsed to the ground due to excessive blood loss.
A look of distress flickered across Jessica's eyes as she reached out, trying to help me up.
But the next second, Callum called her name frantically from inside the ward. Without hesitation, she turned and left.
…
After the transfusion, I was chained beneath Isabella's hospital bed, utterly humiliated and stripped of all dignity.
Molly Spencer, Jessica's mother, glared at me. Seeing that I was awake, she abruptly slapped me hard across the face. "You son of a bitch! I definitely made the right decision not to let you be with Jessica back then! How could you harm a baby like that?"
Since I was already weak, I felt as if I were at death's door when Jessica's parents beat me. Meanwhile, Jessica just stood by and watched. Her eyes, which originally had been full of love, were now only filled with indifference.
"Eric, this is what you deserve!" Thomas Burke, Jessica's father, sneered and kicked me in the groin.
At once, I felt a sharp pain in my lower body and screamed in agony.
In the last moment before I closed my eyes, I saw Jessica running anxiously toward me.
…
When I woke up again, I heard Jessica's voice before I even opened my eyes.
"Maybe it's for the best that he can't have children anymore. If Eric could hurt Isabella before having a child of his own, who knows what he would do if he really became a father?" she remarked.
She paused before continuing coldly, "Besides, my mother would never acknowledge Eric's child anyway. The heir of the Burke family will only be Callum's child."
A tear silently rolled down my cheek as I wondered if Jessica ever truly loved me.
I opened my eyes only after the footsteps had faded away. My hand trembled as I touched the stitched wound on my lower body.
Just then, Callum walked into the ward. He sneered upon seeing my weak state.
"Eric, you're neither male nor female now. Plus, you don't even have a child of your own. So, does that mean we should start calling you an old bachelor now?"
After he finished saying these words, he burst into laughter.
With my last bit of strength, I smashed the IV bottle against him.
However, Callum wasn't angry at all. Instead, he deliberately fell to the ground.
The next second, Jessica slapped me hard across the face, and I vomited a mouthful of blood.
"Eric! What are you doing?"
In a tearful tone, Callum explained aggrievedly, "Jess, please don't hit Eric. I only came in because I wanted to thank him for donating blood to Isabella…"
He sniffled before adding, "But he probably thought I was provoking him and attacked me without warning. It was my fault."
Jessica cast me a look of sheer disappointment before helping Callum up.
"Eric, I never imagined you would become such a vile person. You really are nothing like Callum. Maybe I should have listened to my mother back then."
With that, she turned around and left without hesitation.
Looking at Callum's smug expression, I laughed until tears filled my eyes.
Jessica was not the only one who had made the wrong choice. I had too.
Let's Get a Divorce
A week later, I was finally discharged from the hospital.
When I got home and opened the door, I saw Callum and his daughter.
Jessica immediately stepped forward and stood in front of them. She frowned as she said, "Because of what you did, Isabella is still traumatized. Bringing them here will make it easier for me to take care of them.
I glanced at her expressionlessly and nodded.
When she saw how calm I was, Jessica was stunned for a moment. As if sensing something was wrong, she reached out to grab me.
Just as I was about to dodge, Callum intercepted Jessica's outstretched hand. "Jess, if Eric doesn't want us here, Isabella and I can stay somewhere else."
After he finished speaking, Callum gave me a smug look. Even so, I still looked at them calmly.
Upon seeing this, Jessica uttered out of spite, "This house belongs to the Burke family. I can let whoever I want to stay here. I'll kick Eric out if he refuses to let you stay!"
After that, she looked at me tentatively, as if waiting for me to lose my temper or give in.
Indeed, I would have already made a scene if it were in the past. But now, I just forced a smile and said, "Jessica, I'll let you two be together. Let's get a divorce."
A flash of panic darted through Jessica's eyes, and she snapped in anger, "Fine! Let's get divorced! Let's see if a man like you, who can no longer have children, can still find another rich woman willing to marry him after leaving me!"
As if feeling she had gone overboard, she softened her tone for once. "I'll send them away once they're better. Don't be angry, okay?"
She reached out to hug me, but all I felt from her was something rotten and suffocating.
To me, Jessica had already decayed from the inside.
I dodged her reaching hand and prepared to go upstairs to get my documents, but when I turned around, I discovered that Callum had found the urn I had put away.
He poured the ashes on the ground and purposely let a stray dog urinate on them.
The sight of it instantly tore my heart out, and I rushed over immediately.
"You son of a bitch!" I cursed. "Don't touch my mom's ashes!"
Maliciously raising the corners of his mouth, Callum then mixed the ashes with the stray dog's urine right in front of me.
I abruptly lunged forward, desperately trying to pick up the ashes from the ground.
However, he stepped heavily on my hand.
As I looked at the pile of ashes soaked in dog urine, I couldn't take it anymore and pushed Callum to the ground.
The next second, something smashed against the back of my head. A sharp crack rang out.
Dizziness overwhelmed me, and I collapsed backward onto the broken shards. Blood blurred my vision.
Holding Callum in her arms, Jessica glared at me resentfully. "Eric, how could you be so evil? How could you hurt Callum out of jealousy?"
After glancing at me smugly, Callum played the victim and said, "I'm fine, Jess. Don't hurt Eric because of me."
When Jessica heard his words, her gaze turned even colder as she looked at me. "Eric, it seems I've been too kind to you. That's why you dared to hurt Callum. Go to the storage room and reflect on what you've done."
With that, she ignored my wounds, dragged me into the storage room, and slammed the door shut.
The Humiliation at the Hospital
I was locked inside until the housekeeper let me out the next day.
Looking at me with disdain, she added, "Hurry up and leave. Ms. Burke said she's letting you off the hook."
I stumbled out of the storage room. Only a tiny bit of my mother's ashes remained.
…
On the way to the hospital, I had already bought my plane ticket. I only needed to get my resignation approved.
Once that was done, I would leave this place with all my documents.
After I submitted my resignation letter, the hospital director sighed. "Well, you dug your own grave when you offended Callum. Ms. Burke values her husband and child the most. Now, no one can protect you."
My numb heart ached again.
Since the Burke family did not acknowledge me, my relationship with Jessica remained a secret even now.
I forced a smile and waited for the hospital director to approve my resignation letter.
Just then, a commotion broke out inside the hospital.
I instinctively rushed outside, only to see Callum standing proudly in the lobby, scattering photos everywhere.
Meanwhile, behind him, a red banner stood out prominently.
"Thank you, Dr. Miller, for satisfying my wife's needs. I'm willing to offer three dollars as a token of appreciation for his service."
Everyone around immediately cast strange glances at me when they saw me come out.
For a second, the world spun, and I nearly collapsed.
Seeing my pale face, Callum added without hesitation, "Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce Eric Miller, the man having an affair with my wife. Remember this face. Never let your wife bring your child here for treatment, or she might be targeted by Dr. Miller too."
At once, everyone around looked at me with disgust.
"I never expected Dr. Miller to be such a jerk!"
When Callum saw that everyone was condemning me, his face immediately crinkled with a smile.
Suddenly, he stepped forward, grabbed my hair, and punched me hard in the face.
I struggled to break free. Then I looked at the crowd with a pale face and anxiously explained, "No, that's not true. Jessica and I have a marriage certificate. Callum is the other man."
With that, I took out the marriage certificate, which had my name and Jessica's printed on it, from the documents I was carrying.
After reading it, the crowd looked at each other in confusion. They were unsure whether to believe me.
Callum's expression instantly twisted with rage at the sight of it.
At the height of the stalemate, Jessica showed up with her daughter, Isabella.
She frowned deeply after noticing that I was holding a marriage certificate.
Some busybodies told her everything.
"Ms. Burke, which one is your husband exactly?"
I held up the marriage certificate and stared intently at her.
A moment later, Jessica's cold voice rang out. "Eric and I have no relationship. He forged the marriage certificate all for the sake of his vanity. Callum is my only husband."
My eyes were bloodshot as I looked over in disbelief.
Jessica avoided my gaze and hurriedly left with Isabella in her arms.
As for me, Callum stripped me of my clothes and kicked my lower body dozens of times amidst the crowd's scornful stares.
Only after he had vented his anger was I thrown out of the hospital like a dog.
I picked up my resignation acceptance and limped home.
After packing all my documents, I tore up the marriage certificate and threw it into the trash can without hesitation.
From this day forward, I would have nothing more to do with Jessica.
…
Third-person POV
After carrying Isabella home, Jessica could not stop thinking about Eric's empty, lifeless eyes. Her heart began to ache uncontrollably.
With that in mind, she texted Eric. "Honey, what happened today was my fault. I'll sleep with you tonight and let you do me in whatever position you want. Please don't be angry anymore, okay?"
She sent the message, only to be horrified to find that she had been blocked.
At last, Jessica's panic became uncontrollable.
She rushed to the hospital, but there was no one at the entrance.
With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone and called the hospital director, asking, "Where's Eric? Where did he go?"
The hospital director answered cautiously, "Dr. Miller has already resigned, but he forgot to take his mother's death certificate with him."
