Chapter 2

Chloe swiped her security badge at the electronic turnstile of the Harrison Properties building in Manhattan. The machine beeped, and she pushed through the glass gates.

She rode the crowded elevator to the 15th floor. A woman from accounting, Lisa, glanced at her. “Heard you had a rough weekend, Hayes. Everything okay?” Chloe nodded stiffly. “Fine, thanks.” Lisa didn’t push further. As she stepped out, she immediately noticed an unusual, tense silence among her colleagues in the open bullpen. People avoided her eyes.

Chloe walked to her desk. It was the prime window spot, a reward reserved for the project lead. She set down her heavy leather tote bag on the polished surface. A junior staffer, Kevin, passed by and mumbled, “Good luck today.” Chloe frowned. “Why? What’s going on?” He just shook his head and hurried away.

Diane Miller approached her desk. Diane's face was grim, the usual corporate cheerfulness completely gone. She quietly asked Chloe to follow her to the main boardroom. “What’s this about?” Chloe asked. Diane didn’t answer. “You’ll see.”

Chloe walked down the carpeted aisle. Her stomach tightened into a hard knot. She glanced toward Ethan Foster's desk—it was empty, his chair pushed back as if he had just stood up. She didn't have time to wonder where he'd gone. She entered the boardroom.

Inside, Mr. Harrison sat rigidly at the head of the long mahogany table. Arthur Finch, Julian's executive assistant, sat to his right. Arthur's posture was relaxed, representing Beaumont Corporation's absolute power in the room. And near the back, his jaw clenched, Ethan Foster was already seated. Chloe caught his eye. He gave her a small, worried nod.

Mr. Harrison cleared his throat. He did not make eye contact with Chloe. He announced a sudden, immediate restructuring of the joint venture project. He stated flatly that Beaumont Corporation had explicitly requested a change in leadership to ensure better corporate synergy. Mr. Harrison finally looked directly at Chloe. He officially stripped her of her project lead title and the massive completion bonus associated with it.

Chloe’s voice was tight. “On what grounds? My performance reviews have been excellent.” Mr. Harrison sighed. “It’s out of my hands, Chloe.”

Chloe's heart sank straight into her stomach. A cold sweat broke out on the back of her neck. She realized instantly that this was Julian's direct, vindictive retaliation from the weekend.

Ethan Foster abruptly stood up from his leather chair. He slammed his palm flat on the mahogany table in open protest. The loud smack echoed in the quiet room. “This is ridiculous,” Ethan said, his voice shaking with anger. “Chloe is the reason we even have this deal.”

Ethan argued passionately. He stated that Chloe was the most qualified person in the building. He reminded them that she had worked unpaid overtime for six months to secure this specific deal.

Arthur Finch looked at Ethan with dead eyes. He coldly replied that Beaumont Corp, as the primary investor, had the final say on all personnel for the joint venture. “Your opinion is noted, Mr. Foster,” Arthur said. “It is also irrelevant.”

Mr. Harrison glared at Ethan. He sternly warned him to sit down immediately or face severe disciplinary action. “Ethan, sit. Now,” Mr. Harrison snapped. Ethan didn’t move. “I won’t just—”

Chloe reached across the table. She gently squeezed Ethan's forearm. She could feel the tense muscle under his dress shirt. She stopped him from ruining his own career for her sake. “Ethan, stop,” she whispered. “It’s not worth it.” He looked at her, his jaw tight, then slowly sat back down.

She looked Mr. Harrison in the eye. She forced her voice to remain perfectly level and calm. She stated that she accepted the demotion and would assist the new lead in any capacity required. “I’ll do whatever is needed for the project,” she said. Mr. Harrison nodded, relieved. “Good. That’s settled, then.”

Arthur Finch smirked slightly. He packed up his legal files, snapped his briefcase shut, and left the boardroom without offering another word. Mr. Harrison quickly dismissed the room. He walked out, leaving Chloe and Ethan alone in the quiet, tense space.

Ethan turned to her, apologizing profusely for not doing more. “I should have pushed harder,” he said. Chloe shook her head. “You would have gotten fired. Then where would I be?”

Chloe shook her head. She thanked him sincerely for his bravery, her voice quiet but firm.

She walked back out to the main bullpen. She went straight to the supply closet and picked up an empty, flat cardboard box. She assembled it with quick, jerky movements. A nearby colleague, Sarah, watched her. “Chloe… I’m so sorry.” Chloe kept packing. “Don’t be. It’s just a desk.”

She returned to the window desk and began packing her personal items. She carefully wrapped the framed photo of her grandmother in a sweater. She gathered her favorite pens and dropped them into the box. She carried the heavy box across the floor. She set it down in a small, cramped cubicle right next to the noisy, industrial printer station. This was her newly assigned desk.

She sat down, and the chair squeaked loudly. A passing intern snickered. Chloe ignored him.

She sat down in the uncomfortable, squeaky chair. She pulled her phone from her pocket and opened her mobile banking app.

She stared at the bright red negative balance on the screen. She looked at the pending medical bills for her grandmother's heart medication. She swallowed the bitter taste of her pride, knowing she desperately needed this reduced paycheck just to survive.

Ethan appeared at her cubicle entrance. “You okay?” he asked softly. Chloe locked her phone and forced a smile. “I will be.” He didn’t look convinced, but he nodded and walked away.

Chapter 3

Chloe locked her phone screen. The red numbers disappeared into black glass. She placed the phone face down on the cramped laminate desk and pushed back her squeaky chair.

She needed to move. She walked past the humming, heat-radiating printers, heading toward the employee breakroom at the far end of the hall. She needed a coffee to stop the dull throbbing behind her eyes.

The breakroom was completely empty. The fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead. She opened the overhead cabinet and grabbed a standard, thick ceramic company mug.

She placed the mug under the spout of the large commercial espresso machine. She pressed the glowing green button.

The machine whirred loudly, grinding the beans with a harsh, mechanical screech. The noise completely masked the sound of the heavy breakroom door opening behind her.

Chloe turned around, holding her steaming mug of dark coffee. She gasped audibly.

Julian stood perfectly still in the doorway.

He stepped inside. His expensive, perfectly tailored suit looked entirely out of place against the cheap linoleum floor and sterile lighting of the breakroom.

He reached a hand back behind him. He pushed the heavy door closed until the metal lock clicked shut. They were completely isolated.

He took a slow, deliberate step toward her. The rich, earthy scent of his expensive vetiver cologne cut through the air, completely overwhelming the smell of roasted coffee.

Chloe instinctively backed up. Her heels scraped against the floor until her hips hit the edge of the laminate counter. She gripped the handle of the ceramic mug. Her knuckles turned stark white.

Julian stopped mere inches away from her. He looked down at her. His dark eyes held zero warmth, zero familiarity. It was as if he was looking at a disgusting insect.

He warned her in a low, dangerous voice.

"I told you to stay far away from Poppy," he said, the words vibrating in his chest. "Stop playing your manipulative games, Chloe."

Chloe's jaw tightened until her teeth ached. She stood her ground, refusing to shrink away.

"I have absolutely no interest in you, or your new girlfriend," she stated, her voice tight but steady.

Julian sneered. He leaned in closer, his face inches from hers.

"If you upset Poppy," he threatened, his breath warm against her cheek, the scent of his vetiver cologne suffocatingly close, "I will destroy your career. I will ruin your family. Don't think for a second I don't know exactly how much debt your pathetic, gambling father has racked up this month. I can call in those markers with a single phone call. Do you understand me?"

Chloe's heart broke all over again at his casual cruelty. The man who used to kiss her forehead was now threatening her livelihood. She forced her facial muscles to remain frozen, presenting a stoic, unreadable mask.

Seeing her lack of reaction, Julian scoffed in disgust. He adjusted his pristine cuffs, took a step back, and left the breakroom as abruptly as he had entered.

The moment the heavy door shut, the adrenaline left Chloe's body. Her trembling hands failed her.

Her fingers went numb. She dropped the ceramic mug.

It hit the linoleum floor and shattered into dozens of jagged pieces. Hot, black coffee splashed violently onto her bare ankles and black pumps.

The door pushed open a second later. Ethan rushed in. He had heard the crash from the hallway.

He saw the mess and immediately pulled a thick stack of brown paper towels from the wall dispenser. He dropped to his knees and began wiping the hot liquid away from her shoes.

Ethan looked up and noticed Chloe's pale, shell-shocked face. He stood up, gently gripping her elbow, and guided her away from the broken glass.

He led her out of the breakroom. He bypassed the bullpen and pushed open the heavy fire door to the deserted emergency stairwell.

The door closed behind them, plunging them into the quiet, hollow echo of the painted concrete stairwell.

Ethan handed her a clean, dry tissue from his pocket. His voice was soft and deeply reassuring.

"What did Julian do to you?" he asked, his eyes searching her face.

Chloe shook her head. She gripped the tissue tightly. She refused to explain the humiliating details of her past.

"He just hates me," she whispered, her throat burning.

Ethan sighed heavily. He ran a hand through his neat hair, looking frustrated. He leaned against the concrete wall and revealed a piece of critical information he had just learned from HR.

"Julian isn't just an executive," Ethan said quietly. "He is the newly appointed lead director for the entire Harrison partnership."

Chloe closed her eyes. The crushing reality set in. Her chest felt like it was bound in iron bands. Julian would be her ultimate, direct boss for the next year.

Ethan placed a comforting, warm hand on her shoulder. He didn't pull her into a hug, just offered solid, physical support.

"I will watch your back, Chloe. I promise," Ethan said.

Chloe leaned the back of her head against the cold, painted concrete wall. She clutched the crumpled tissue in her fist. She realized with absolute certainty that her nightmare was only just beginning.
