Seven Years as a Secret Lover, One Month to Become His Regret Chapter 1

I had been the off-the-books woman of my brother's closest ally for seven years, and we had been whispering about making it permanent.

No church ceremony, no public claim before witnesses. Just Damien's low voice in the dark of the safehouse suite, his mouth against my temple, promising me that when the time was right he would bring me before his father's people and name me openly. Seven years of that promise. Seven years of closed curtains and back entrances and a life lived in the negative space between what the Families saw and what I was allowed to want.

I followed the location he had shared with me earlier that evening and found his gathering at Luca's, the private dining club on Mulberry Street where the younger sons of allied Families drank too much Barolo and spoke too freely behind doors that were supposed to be soundproof. The street outside was quiet, two soldiers leaning against the hood of a black sedan, cigarettes cupped in their palms. They recognized me well enough not to stop me but not well enough to show respect; I was no one's wife, no one's publicly claimed woman, and the hierarchy of this world had no courtesies to spare for a ghost.

I climbed the narrow staircase. The oak door of the private room was heavy, old-world, the kind that swallowed sound. But it had been left ajar by an inch, and the voices inside traveled through that crack like smoke through a keyhole.

"Damien Valenti, your Cinderella is back in the city." A low whistle, someone's glass hitting the table. "So what are you going to do about that stand-in little sister you've been keeping?"

My hand froze on the railing. My thumb pressed into the inside of my wrist, the small motion I had never been able to explain to anyone, a private test of my own pulse before I decided whether to stand or run.

Damien did not reply.

The silence should have been reassuring. It was not. Silence in this world was never neutral; it was permission for the next man to speak, and the next man always spoke the cruelest truth.

……

The atmosphere behind the door turned tense, a held-breath quality I could feel through the wood, and then another voice laughed, the careless, brandy-warmed laugh of someone who had never loved anyone enough to be afraid.

"You have to hand it to Damien, though. Impressive how bold he is. He actually dared to go after Dante Moretti's little sister. Now he's used her up and tossed her aside, and yet here comes Alessia, walking right back into his life…"

"She left so decisively back then. She deserves to have a stand-in to irritate her when she returns."

Laughter. Low, ugly, conspiratorial laughter, the sound of men who understood the rules of ownership and found the violation entertaining.

I stood on the other side of that door and felt every year of my silence settle on my shoulders like a physical weight. Stand-in. The word was so small, so ordinary, and it unmade everything. Every night I had spent waiting for him in the penthouse he leased under a shell company. Every bruise-gentle kiss he pressed to my forehead after coming home smelling of cigar smoke and someone else's agenda. Every time he told me patience was the price of a future together. Stand-in. A placeholder. A warm body in the seat Alessia had vacated, kept only until the real woman decided to reclaim it.

I did not open the door. I turned, descended the stairs, and walked past the soldiers without seeing them.

The next day, Damien took me to Alessia's welcome banquet.

It was held at the Palazzo, the casino-hotel front the Valenti Family operated through their hospitality shell on the Upper East Side. Crystal chandeliers threw fractured light across white marble. The room was full of silk and threat, wives of capos seated at round tables like jeweled sentinels, their husbands circling with tumblers of scotch and smiles that never reached their eyes. Damien kept his hand on the small of my back the entire first hour, his touch warm and proprietary, guiding me between conversations, leaning down to murmur something soft against my hair whenever someone important looked our way.

Affectionate gestures. The kind he had never shown me in public before. For one treacherous, stupid moment, my heart tried to believe the display was real, that last night's overheard conversation had been misunderstood, that stand-in had meant something less lethal in context.

Then Alessia left her table. She moved quickly, her hand pressed to her mouth, her eyes bright with tears that caught the chandelier light as she fled toward the corridor.

And Damien's hand fell away from my back as though my skin had burned him.

He did not look at me. He did not excuse himself. He simply turned and went after her, his stride lengthening with a panic I had never once seen him show on my behalf, not in seven years, not in the dark, not ever. The room noticed. Of course the room noticed. In a world built on what is seen and who is claimed, his departure was a public sentence, and I was the one left standing in it.

Someone's elbow caught the edge of a serving tray as I tried to step out of the way. Hot soup arced across the front of my dress, scalding through the thin fabric, searing the skin of my forearms and chest. I gasped but did not scream. Screaming would have drawn eyes, and the eyes in this room belonged to people who would remember my humiliation and file it away for leverage.

I left through a service corridor, soup cooling into a damp, stinging film against my burns, and took a car back to the penthouse alone.

The door to his study was unlocked. He never left it unlocked. He never allowed me inside that room; it was the single hard boundary he maintained in a space we otherwise shared, and I had respected it the way you respect the closed doors of a man whose world runs on secrets and Omertà.

Tonight, I pushed the door open.

The room smelled of leather and old paper and the faintest trace of Alessia's perfume, something floral and deliberate that did not belong in a space where I had never been permitted to set foot. His desk was dark walnut, immaculate, a single lamp casting a warm circle of light across its surface. And there, in the center of that circle, angled as though he looked at it often, was a framed photograph.

Damien and Alessia. His arm around her shoulders, her head tilted toward his chest, both of them younger, lighter, untouched by the politics that had eventually pulled her away. The silver frame was polished. No dust. Someone had been maintaining it, picking it up, setting it back down with care, in a room I was forbidden to enter.

My heart turned to ash.

I stood there long enough for the burns on my arms to stop hurting, or maybe I simply stopped feeling them, the way you stop feeling rain once you accept you are already soaked through. Then I walked to the living room, picked up the phone, and called my brother overseas.

The line connected on the second ring. Dante's voice was clipped, alert, the voice of a man who managed the Moretti Family's operations across the Atlantic and never fully slept.

"Brother," I said, and my voice was steady, which surprised me. "I've made up my mind about the arranged marriage. I agree."
