Chapter 1

It was the day Jessica Goldenfold got the International Wealth Club Charity Award. My doctor pronounced me dead, for I could not afford the artificial heart needed for my survival.

The show's host asked Jessica to call the one whom she had the most regret about. She called my number.

I picked it up. She asked, "Do you ever regret leaving me for money?"

I stared at the obscene bill for the artificial heart. Then, I chuckled. "You're a rich girl, Jessica. How about a loan of 30 grand?"

She killed the call. I watched her telling everyone in front of the cameras, "No more regrets."

She had no idea at all. She had no idea that I was the one who gave my heart to her when she had heart failure. I did it behind her back.

The Past

Once the live show was over, I got a transfer. Thirty grand from Jessica Goldenfold. That was surprising. I had no idea what to feel about this.

I used that money to pay off my bills, then I heard a familiar voice coming from outside. Through the crack of the door I looked, and I saw Jessica.

She was as beautiful as I remembered, but the one beside her was no longer me. She came straight to the hospital right after the award ceremony, and she didn't even get to change her clothes.

All because her husband's stomach protested. I saw her gently rubbing Christopher Landton's stomach to relieve his pain. I hung my head low and tried to pretend I hadn't seen anything.

Quietly, I pulled the door shut, but Jessica yanked it back before I knew it. That made me jump. I raised my head and met her eyes. She was scanning me, but the look in her eyes was colder than any biting wind.

"Been a while. Aren't you going to say hi?"

I stared at her and opened my mouth. Yes, I had so much I wanted to talk about, but all I said was, "A loan of 45 grand this time?"

That made her freeze, and then flames of fury melted some of her frigidity. She grabbed my hand. "We've gone seven years without seeing each other, and that's all you have to say to me?"

The needle marks on my wrists were shooting pain up my arm. I took a deep breath and said quietly, "You're rich, Ms. Goldenfold. If you won't lend me any money, Mr. Landton might get the wrong message."

That made her freeze again. There was something in her eyes. Something more than emotions. She was about to say something, but Christopher grabbed her hand. "Is that your ex-husband, my love?"

He looked at me and, with pity dripping from his voice, said, "What can you do with 45 grand? The suit Jess gets me alone cost 75 thousand. Pity you failed to treasure her, Mr. Shawlesque. But lucky me. If you hadn't so heartlessly abandoned her, I'd never have met her."

Silence fell upon me as my mind drifted back into the past. I met Jessica in college, then we fell in love and dated for five years. She was not a billionaire or an entrepreneur back then. I was healthier than I was.

We were both poor orphans who found love in each other. For the first time in our lives, we had someone we cared about, and we worked hard just to start a family of our own.

Just when our careers were starting to look better, Jessica was diagnosed with a serious heart disorder. Treatment and transplant cost a ton of money. We spent all the savings meant for our business just for the treatment.

I worked multiple jobs and only had one meal a day. Every single cent was only spent after I thought about the purchase ten times at least. I worked myself to the bone just to get medicine money. Even her medicine had to be swapped out for the cheapest option because we didn't have enough money.

Yet no suitable heart showed up. I could only watch as she wasted herself away. She lost so much weight that there was barely any flesh on her bones. Despair was slowly becoming her only companion, but the doctor came in with news of hope.

They found a match.

Me.

Chapter 2

Cruel Man

My train of thought came to a stop. Jessica stood on tiptoe and kissed Christopher's forehead. Her eyes were overflowing with tender love for him. "And if he hadn't been heartless enough, I'd never have met you, my guardian angel. You wanted that wallet? The 45 grand one? I'll get it for you. Pick a more expensive one next time. I can afford it."

I watched them glow and bask in love, while the pain in my wrist gnawed at my bone. Breathing itself was becoming laborious, yet I found the strength to pull my hand away from Jessica's.

Just when I was about to leave, Christopher stretched his leg out and tripped me. "Oh, you should watch where you're going, John."

I fell to my knees, and my medical history fell open like white flowers. They fell right beside Jessica.

Jessica's face tightened up, and she extended a hand without thinking. Christopher grabbed it and gasped. "What is this?"

The medical history caught Jessica's attention. "Artificial heart transplant…" A hint of fury flared on her face. She hurled the file into my face. "You'd stoop this low just for money, Jonathan? I knew it. You haven't changed in seven years! Money, money, money! It's all you care about!"

I got back up and stared at the woman's perfectly healthy body. A small smile curled my lips as I quietly collected the papers. "Yeah, I love money, Ms. Goldenfold. Mind lending me more?"

Christopher gently took Jessica's hand, but when he looked at me, there was only mockery and malice in his eyes. "Maybe he's telling the truth, my love. Besides, you only got that heart because he left you. Let's help him out."

That reminded Jessica that I left her for money. The fury and hesitation in her eyes were frozen.

"No heart can save a heartless man. He doesn't deserve it."

Jessica grabbed Christopher and turned around. Christopher was still begging her to help me, but when he turned, I saw a smile curving his lips. A smile oozing with derision and venom.

As I picked up the papers, all covered in Christopher's shoe marks, my mechanical heart was trembling faster than ever. It should not be trembling like this.

My pupils were starting to dilate, and the couple that was leaving me behind became nothing but blurry circles.

A long, long time later, I wiped the blood off the corner of my mouth. As I stared at the papers that read 'artificial heart transplant,' my fingers brushed across the scar on my chest. The one that'd been there for seven years.

Even now, Jessica had no idea that the heart that was beating in her chest was mine.

Seven years ago, Jessica was inching closer to death with every passing moment. We still could not find a match for her.

Artificial hearts were not as advanced as they were. They could technically keep the patient alive for days at a time, but there were a lot more downsides than ups.

Once they confirmed that my heart was a match, I gave it to her. Me? I got an artificial heart that technically could keep me running for seven years. I got the cheapest option to save money.

Since then, my chest would throb with pain whenever I least expected it. Coughing up blood and constant lethargy was normal.

Money was tight, so the literal change of heart was delayed again and again. It was the seventh year now. The artificial heart beating in my chest shot pain throughout my body for the seventh time. I knew it was reaching its limits.

I left the hospital and returned to my rental. The place was small, humid, and wet. Winter was torture. I swore I could freeze. Summer was hell. I thought I would burn just living in the place. The only perk was that the place was cheap.

I used to live with Jessica here. Here, we talked about the future we wanted. When I found out my heart was a match for her, I put up a gold-digging act, and I served her the papers.

Chapter 3

Foolish Choice

We spent five years together. No matter how hard life got, I never complained. I always stayed by her side. She knew how deep my love for her ran, and she never believed I'd leave her.

I knew she loved me deeply as well. She loved me so much, she'd never let me sacrifice myself just to save her. There was only one path left for me. I had to swallow my pain and pretend that I'd had enough.

I had to pretend I'd had enough of living a miserable life with her. I had to act like I hated living with her, where hope was nowhere to be found. I had to pretend that I had enough of one meal a day, cheap medicine, and a rough life.

I told her I had had enough of thinking too much just to buy a simple thing.

And that day was torturous. Even now, I could still see it in my mind. The girl who was always so headstrong and fearless shed tears for the first time as she signed the papers.

I signed the organ donation papers at the same time as well. After the surgery, I left her, and the world called me all kinds of names over it. I returned to the rental. The place where we spent five years together.

This was where I would wait until death took me into its arms.

It was surprising that I would see Jessica again. Now, she was getting further and further away from me. She became the kind of woman she said she would. I could never go back to those days.

I watched her. The woman the news wouldn't stop talking about. My heart broke, yet I felt proud.

And then my phone rang. That was it for memory lane. I picked up the phone, and the banker told me the 30 grand was a wrong transfer. I needed to give the money back, or I'd be sued.

I hung up and smiled bitterly. There was nothing I could say. A moment of silence later, I called my buddy and asked him to get me a job so I could clear my debt.

Jessica hated my guts. If she knew a gold-digger like me had to pay her back in instalments, she'd accept it happily. She would watch me work myself to the bone to pay her off.

Thanks to my heart, I had no strength at all, and most jobs were closed to me. All I could work on were odd jobs, and they were barely enough to keep me alive.

Christian Chandler, my buddy, knew that my health was a mess. He got me a waiting job at a banquet hall. Easy job. I could make 75 dollars a day.

I changed into my uniform and put on my mask, then it was time to work. As I served the guests drinks, I ran into Jessica again.

She was in an expensive gown and looked like the perfect picture of elegance. Christopher was in a crisp suit and looked sharp. They were hand in hand, the epitome of a perfect couple. Everyone couldn't get enough of them.

I only had a glance, and I hung my head low. The tray was up, and Jessica did not recognize me. As I turned, Christopher said, "Hey, do your job properly, waiter. You just splashed wine all over my suit!"

I stopped in my tracks and checked his clothes. There was only a patch on the suit's corner. Instead of saying anything, I kept my head low and wiped the patch away.

Jessica was looking at me, a frown creasing her forehead. Her lips were nothing but a fine line now.

Evil spread in Christopher's eyes. He slammed his foot into my chest. Pain pierced every inch of my body. I crumpled to the ground and gasped in agony.

"Take your filthy hands off me! Security, get him out of here!"

Though there was fury on his face, the smug smile on his lips betrayed his cruel delight. Even though I had only exposed my eyes, when I met Jessica, she recognized me.

Her lips trembled, and a hint of pain flickered in her eyes. She was feeling for me, but only for a moment. Then, it was replaced by derision. She raised her hand and stopped the guards, then she pulled my mask off. "You should be saying hi to your ex-wife, Jonathan."
