Chapter 5

Naomi left Ethan's office with her thoughts tangled and heavy. The street outside felt quieter than before, as if the city itself were holding its breath. She pulled her jacket closer and walked without a clear destination, letting the weight of everything she had learned settle in her mind.

Her father had not been careless.

He had been brave.

The realization hurt more than any lie ever had.

She reached a small park a few blocks away and sat on an empty bench beneath a tree stripped bare by the season. The air was cool, carrying the scent of damp earth. For the first time that day, Naomi allowed herself to feel the fear she had been holding back.

They were powerful.

They were watching her.

They had already destroyed one life.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket.

She did not need to look to know who it was from.

Are you done pretending you are in control?

Naomi stared at the screen, her heart pounding. Her hands shook, but she did not let go of the phone.

You are following me, she typed.

Yes.

Her chest tightened. She scanned the park, her gaze moving over strangers passing by. Any one of them could be watching her. Any one of them could be reporting her movements.

You should stop now, the message continued. This ends badly for people like you.

Naomi took a deep breath.

People like me, she typed back, are already ruined.

The reply took longer this time.

Then prove it.

A chill crept down her spine.

Naomi stood and left the park, forcing her steps to remain steady. She knew fear was what they wanted. Panic would make her careless.

She remembered Ethan's words. That she was dangerous because she had nothing left to lose.

Her apartment was no longer an option. Too many memories. Too many places someone could be waiting.

Instead, she checked into a small motel on the edge of town under her real name. If they were watching her, hiding would only confirm their power.

Inside the room, she locked the door and sat on the bed, staring at the wall. The silence was thick, pressing in on her thoughts.

She could walk away. Disappear. Live quietly and let the truth die with her father.

Or she could fight and risk losing what little safety she had left.

Naomi closed her eyes and thought of her father's tired smile. Of the nights he spent chasing answers he knew could destroy him.

She opened her eyes.

"I choose the truth," she whispered.

Outside, a car engine started and drove away.

Naomi did not know if it meant anything. But she knew one thing for certain.

She had crossed the point of no return.

Chapter 6

Naomi barely slept that night.

Every sound outside the motel room made her heart race. Footsteps passing the door. A car slowing in the parking lot. The distant hum of traffic. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling, listening, counting her breaths.

Morning arrived quietly.

Gray light slipped through the thin curtains, revealing a room that felt smaller than it had the night before. Naomi sat up slowly, her body stiff, her mind sharper than it had been in days.

Fear had not left her. It had settled into something else.

Awareness.

She showered quickly and dressed in simple clothes that would not draw attention. Before leaving, she paused, scanning the room. The window was untouched. The door lock intact. Nothing appeared disturbed.

Still, she trusted nothing.

Outside, the motel parking lot was nearly empty. Naomi walked toward the bus stop, her gaze moving deliberately, watching reflections in windows, checking who slowed when she slowed, who crossed when she crossed.

No one followed.

Or no one obvious.

At a small diner nearby, she ordered breakfast and took a seat where she could see both the entrance and the street. As she stirred her coffee, she replayed Ethan's words in her mind.

You inherited his evidence.

That meant the fight did not begin with strength or power. It began with information.

Naomi pulled out her phone and searched again. This time, she did not look for Ethan Rowe. She searched for the people connected to the files he had shown her. Companies. Foundations. Legal firms.

Patterns emerged.

The same names appeared across different boards. The same addresses linked to multiple shell organizations. It was subtle. Easy to miss if you were not looking closely.

Her father had been patient. Methodical.

Naomi understood now how he had fallen into this web. Once you noticed the pattern, you could not unsee it.

A waitress refilled her cup. Naomi thanked her with a small smile, then returned to her screen.

One name stood out.

A foundation tied to legal advocacy. Public image spotless. Donations generous. And buried in its history, a sudden restructuring that coincided with the beginning of her father's investigation.

Naomi's pulse quickened.

This was not coincidence.

She finished her coffee and left cash on the table. Outside, the air felt colder, sharper. She wrapped her coat tighter and began walking toward the public library a few blocks away.

If she was going to fight, she needed access. Records. Archives. Things that could not be erased with a court order.

As she pushed open the library doors, Naomi felt something shift inside her. She was no longer reacting. She was choosing.

They were watching her.

So she would start watching back.
