Chapter 1

By the third year of our mate bond, I was diagnosed with a rare werewolf disease that threatened to consume my life. Maverick, my Alpha and mate, didn’t hesitate to donate his healing essence to save me. Yet, less than an hour after the ceremony, he betrayed me.

In the infirmary of the Blue Moon Pack, I activated the security link connected to our den, just as I had done countless times before. To my horror, I saw two figures entangled on the bed that was supposed to be ours. The other woman, Siena, a rogue werewolf, was as stunning as ever. She cupped Maverick’s face and asked if he’d mark her as his Luna. Maverick denied it, but when he saw her tears, he leaned in to kiss them away. In that moment, I knew—our bond had shattered.

Right after the healing ritual, I mentioned feeling cold. Maverick, ever attentive, told me there was a new ceremonial fur in the den, and he offered to bring it to me. Seeing his gentle expression, I thought I had chosen the right mate. Despite my diagnosis, Maverick had stayed by my side, even volunteering to share his essence with me. A perfect match, and the ritual had been completed that day.

But I never imagined that while fetching the fur, he would betray me. Through the security link, I initially wanted to mind-link him to suggest he take something for himself too, only to find him tangled with Siena on our bed. Above the headboard was the ceremonial marking photo we’d taken after he’d marked me as his Luna. During that moment, he had whispered how strong I was and vowed to face any challenge together. Yet now, he was pouring his energy into someone else.

As they neared the end, Siena spoke up suddenly. “Maverick, will you mark me as your Luna?” I watched Maverick’s face freeze, instinctively replying, “I have a mate.” Immediately after, Siena started crying, and Maverick, in a panic, lowered his head to kiss away her tears. At that moment, I felt utterly hollow. I tried to wipe my own tears but accidentally triggered the mind-link. The connection buzzed over and over, but Maverick kept consoling Siena in his arms.

Once Siena softly apologized, “I’m sorry, Alpha. I was too greedy,” he sighed, lifted her gently, and escorted her to the cleansing chamber before finally responding to my link. “What’s wrong, Luna? Are you feeling unwell?” His voice was still soft, but all I could envision was the stark image of him with another woman wrapped around him. Somehow, my legs gave way, and I collapsed onto the infirmary floor.

Chapter 2

The sharp crash startled Maverick, his Alpha instincts kicking in as he hastily pulled on his ceremonial jacket, ready to rush back to the pack infirmary where I lay. But before he could step out, a panicked scream echoed from the bathroom. He froze, torn between his duty to me and the urgency in that cry.

He turned back, his tall frame filling the doorway as he glanced at the rogue werewolf, Siena, who stood there with fear in her eyes, her ankle swollen from the fall. She looked like a cornered rabbit, vulnerable and pleading. Maverick hesitated for only a moment before scooping her into his arms, his muscles flexing under the weight of his decision. He carried her to his car, his voice firm but laced with concern. "I’ll take you to the infirmary, but you must not cause trouble for my Luna."

Meanwhile, Kylee, the pack’s skilled healer, had already found me near the sacred fountain where I’d collapsed. She helped me back to my bed in the infirmary, her hands steady and reassuring. My condition was critical—a rare werewolf disease had left me weak, and the recent transfer of Maverick’s healing essence had left my body in a fragile state. The fall had only worsened things, and the lead healer warned that I might need intensive care if my vitals continued to decline.

When Maverick finally arrived, his Alpha aura was unsteady, his eyes bloodshot and his face etched with guilt. He took my hand in his, his grip firm but trembling. "Hallie, I’m so sorry," he murmured, his voice heavy with regret. His eyes, usually so commanding, were filled with something that might have been love, but the faint scent of Siena’s floral perfume clung to him, and the sight of her lipstick on his collar was a glaring reminder of the betrayal I’d been trying to ignore.

The pain in my chest flared, my wolf whimpering softly in the back of my mind. Maverick’s presence, once a source of strength, now felt suffocating. My vitals began to plummet, the machines around me beeping frantically. Maverick’s eyes widened, and he barked at the healers, his Alpha tone sharp and urgent. "Do something!"

They rushed me back into the emergency room, where I remained for a full day and night. Through the fog of my exhaustion, I could see Maverick pacing outside the door, his tall, muscular frame rigid with tension. He gripped the lead healer’s arm, his voice low but desperate. "Do you need more of my essence? I’ll give it. Whatever it takes."

The healer shook his head, and Maverick’s face paled, his Alpha aura dimming for the first time since I’d known him.

I lay there, my thoughts a chaotic storm. He cares, doesn’t he? His concern, his willingness to sacrifice—it had to mean something. But then why? Why was he with her? Why was Siena, a rogue with no pack, no standing, so important to him that he’d risk everything?

My wolf stirred again, her voice faint but clear. *He’s lost, Hallie. But you can’t let his weakness destroy you.*

I clenched my fists, the pain in my chest deepening. Maverick might have been my mate, but the bond between us was cracking, and I wasn’t sure it could ever be repaired.

Chapter 3

Maverick Williams and I met during our training at the pack academy. We both came from smaller, less prominent packs, our lives shaped by the challenges of proving ourselves in the werewolf hierarchy. The year we completed our training, I struggled to find a stable position within any pack. Maverick, already showing the promise of a future Alpha, used his influence to secure me a place in his pack, the Blue Moon Pack. He even arranged for me to stay in a comfortable den within the pack’s territory, ensuring I had everything I needed while I prepared for my rank assessment. At that time, his resources were limited, but he spared no expense to support me. He worked tirelessly, taking on extra patrols and training sessions to earn the credits needed to provide for me. Meanwhile, he survived on basic rations, often skipping meals to ensure I had proper sustenance.

The day I passed my rank assessment and was officially recognized as a Delta warrior was filled with joy. I held Maverick’s hand, saying we should solidify our mate bond. But he refused. He said he wanted to offer me a better future and couldn’t let me become his Luna while he was still establishing himself as Alpha. He wanted to ensure our bond would be a source of strength, not just for us but for the entire pack.

He made it happen. He worked tirelessly, day and night, proving his leadership and dedication to the pack. Within a few years, he was officially named Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack. He then led his warriors to victories in inter-pack challenges, solidifying his reputation as a strong and capable leader.

In our seventh year together, Maverick organized a grand ceremony under the full moon and proposed the mate bond to me in front of the entire pack. With tears in my eyes, I accepted. We exchanged the sacred vows: “I, Maverick Williams, Alpha of the Blue Moon Pack, take you, Hallie, as my mate, bound by the Moon Goddess’s will, for all eternity.” And I, in turn, pledged my loyalty and love to him.

For the three years following our marking, we were deeply supportive of each other. Even when I was diagnosed with a rare werewolf disease, Maverick never gave up on me. He even risked his own health to donate his healing essence to save my life. I used to think we were meant for each other, that even death couldn’t tear us apart.

But it felt like the Moon Goddess played a cruel joke on me. Maverick, who had risked his life for mine, had another she-wolf in his life. Silent tears rolled down my cheeks, and the intense emotional turmoil only worsened my condition.

The third time I was rushed into the pack infirmary, Maverick fainted. At that moment, my heart felt a painful squeeze. I even thought, after ten years, maybe occasional slip-ups could be forgiven? But the bond between us, once unbreakable, now felt frayed, and the weight of his betrayal pressed heavily on my chest. My wolf whimpered in the back of my mind, a quiet plea for strength, but I knew deep down that nothing would ever be the same again.
