Rejected as Barren, Pregnant with the Alpha King's Twins Chapter 1

For three years, Silvercrest called me Luna while its elders counted every month I failed to give them an heir.

Ethan used to squeeze my hand under the table and tell them he had chosen me, not my womb.

I believed him because I had sold my mother’s moonstone pendant when his wounded guards needed medicine and wore his mark through every ugly year of his rise.

Then Sophia came home with a two-year-old boy who had Ethan’s eyes.

A doctor pressed a report into my hands and called me permanently barren.

The next morning, servants stripped the Luna cloak from my shoulders before the inheritance hall opened.

Sophia sat beside Ethan with her son on his knee.

I asked for one independent test.

Ethan did not even look at me.

“Your tests are final, Mia. You cannot give Silvercrest an heir.”

“So you are choosing her?”

“I am choosing my Pack.”

“And what happens to me?”

“You leave before sunset. You are no longer my Luna.”

"Leave the cloak on the stand."

The young attendant froze with both hands hovering over the silver-gray velvet. Before she could obey, Elias, Silvercrest's chief steward, entered the dressing room and lifted the ceremonial cloak from its hanger.

"Alpha Ethan ordered it sent for cleaning," he said.

I stared at him. "The succession ceremony begins in twenty minutes. A Luna does not walk into that hall without her colors. Put it back."

Elias folded the cloak over one arm. His face stayed carefully blank. "The Alpha expects you downstairs immediately."

That was not an answer.

I followed him into the corridor, my bare arms prickling in the draft. The West Wing nursery door stood open. Yesterday, the room had been empty. Today, a polished wooden nameplate hung beneath the silver wolf crest.

OLIVER.

Two doors farther down, three leather suitcases sat outside the suite beside Ethan's bedroom. Sophia Bennett's initials gleamed on the brass tags.

My pulse slowed instead of quickening. Details mattered when people wanted you too emotional to notice them.

Sophia had returned to Silvercrest five days ago with a two-year-old boy and a claim that should have required weeks of verification. She said Oliver had been conceived shortly before Ethan and I married, during the last winter she lived in the territory. Ethan told me she would remain in the outer guest house until an independent paternity test was complete.

Last night, he had kissed my forehead and told me not to let the elders frighten me.

Now her luggage was outside his door.

I pushed open the succession hall.

Hundreds of Pack members turned. Conversations died so quickly I could hear the fire snap in the braziers.

Sophia sat in the front row, in the carved chair reserved for the Luna's family. Oliver rested on her lap. Beside his small shoe lay a tarnished silver wolf badge I recognized immediately. Ethan had worn it as a child.

Dr. Malcolm Voss stood at the central podium with a thick medical folder.

"The results are conclusive," he announced. "Mia Arden's recent scans indicate congenital infertility. The condition is permanent."

The room broke into whispers.

I walked down the aisle without hurrying. "Then send my blood and imaging to the Alliance Medical Board. No doctor has ever diagnosed me with a congenital condition."

Elder Grayson took the folder from Voss and handed it to Ethan along with a second report. "The Luna cannot produce an heir. Sophia's preliminary paternity test indicates a ninety-nine percent probability that Oliver is Alpha Ethan's son. The succession cannot proceed under this uncertainty."

"Preliminary," I repeated. "Was it verified by a neutral lab?"

Ethan looked down at the papers instead of at me.

"Was it?" I asked again.

Voss adjusted his glasses. "The Pack clinic followed approved procedure."

"That was not my question."

A restless murmur spread through the elders. Sophia shifted Oliver higher on her lap. She did not smile. She was smarter than that.

Oliver looked at Ethan and held out the silver badge.

"Daddy."

The single word changed the room.

Ethan's shoulders tightened. For three years, the elders had demanded an heir. Three years of appointments, bitter tonics, calendars, expectations, and apologies I had never owed anyone. Ethan once swore he would never let them reduce me to a womb.

During the border famine, I sold my mother's moonstone pendant to buy antibiotics for his warriors. Ethan had closed the empty jewelry box in his hands and promised I would never have to surrender another piece of myself for his title.

He stepped down from the dais.

For one foolish second, I thought he was coming to stand beside me.

Instead, he raised both hands to my neck and opened the clasp of the Luna emblem.

The chain slid cold across my skin.

He placed it on the ceremonial table.

"Mia no longer represents Silvercrest as Luna," Ethan said.

No one moved.

I looked straight into his eyes. "You are ending a three-year marriage over one clinic report and an unverified paternity test?"

"The Pack needs a stable succession."

"I kept this Pack stable while you fought at the eastern border. I rebuilt the clinic accounts. I negotiated the winter grain routes. I buried our dead beside you."

His jaw flexed. "Your sacrifices are recognized."

"Recognized?"

Grayson shifted impatiently. "This is not a trial of her service. It is a question of bloodline."

"Then test the bloodline properly."

Sophia lowered her eyes as if embarrassed by the attention. The brass key ring around her wrist caught the firelight.

My keys.

The keys to the private Alpha residence.

I turned back to Ethan. "When did you give her access to my home?"

He did not answer.

Elias stepped from the side aisle. "Sophia and Oliver will move into the core estate today. Mia's rooms will be inventoried before sunset."

There it was.

This had been decided before I entered the hall.

"I want my personal property and my complete medical records," I said.

Ethan's expression hardened. "Pack ceremonial property stays. The Luna accounts are frozen pending formal rejection."

"Those accounts contain money I brought into the marriage."

"The finance office will review your claim."

I almost laughed. He had already taken the title, the rooms, the keys, and the accounts. Now he wanted me to petition his staff for pieces of my own life.

By dusk, I stood outside the main gates with a cardboard box and one winter coat.

The guards had taken my wedding comb, two family bracelets, my riding saddle, and even the ledger I used to run the clinic charity fund. Elias called each item Pack property.

Ethan watched from the manor steps. Sophia stood behind him with Oliver tucked against her side.

"If an outside review proves the diagnosis false," I called across the drive, "what then?"

Ethan's face did not change.

"Then today will still have happened," he said.

That answer hurt more than the rejection itself.

He turned away.

I carried the box toward the East Wing guest house, where I had been given one night before the formal Council hearing. Halfway there, my fingers brushed the toiletry pouch stuffed between two sweaters.

Something glass knocked against my knuckles.

I pulled out the amber bottle of fertility tonic Dr. Voss had prescribed eight months earlier. Ethan had poured the first dose for me himself.

I tilted the bottle toward the fading light.

A tiny silver leaf was engraved into the base.

Silvercrest's clinic did not use that supplier mark. I had approved every vendor contract in the medical wing for three years.

I slipped the bottle into the inside pocket of my coat.

If they wanted me gone before I could ask questions, I finally knew which question to ask first.
