After My Fiancé Cheated, I Destroyed His Empire Chapter 1

The bag from Julian's favorite deli was starting to leave a grease spot on my wrist by the time I reached the music building. Turkey club, no mayo, extra pickles. Six years of remembering the small things — that was supposed to be love, or close enough to it.

The practice room door was cracked open. I heard the piano first, just a few stray notes, unfinished. Then I heard him laugh — that low, easy laugh I used to think belonged only to me.

I pushed the door the rest of the way open with two fingers.

Julian Ross had his hand fisted in someone's hair, her back against the wall between two cellos, her mouth on his throat. I knew her. Willa Chavez. Sophomore. Always in the front row of Julian's economics lecture, always laughing a half second too long at things that weren't funny.

I didn't scream. I didn't drop the sandwich. Something in my chest went very still, very cold, like a lake freezing over in one clean sheet instead of cracking.

I pulled out my phone. Thirty seconds. His voice, breathless, saying her name like he'd never said mine. I didn't need more than that.

Then I turned around and walked out, and neither of them ever knew I'd been standing there at all.

—

The campus radio station was two buildings over. I don't remember the walk. I remember the host's face when I stepped into the booth — a junior named Diego, headphones half off, mouth opening to ask what I was doing.

"I need thirty seconds of air time," I said. "Now."

He looked at my face and didn't argue.

I plugged my phone into the board myself. My hands did not shake. That surprised me more than anything else that day.

Julian's voice went out over every dorm room, every dining hall speaker, every car radio tuned to 91.5 within a two-mile radius. I stood there and listened to it with the rest of the campus, like I was hearing it for the first time too.

Then I unplugged my phone, thanked Diego, and left.

By the time I got to the parking lot, my name and Julian's were both trending in four different group chats. I didn't check a fifth.

—

Haven picked up on the first ring.

"I need you," I said.

"On my way." No questions. That's Haven Berry — my roommate freshman year, my best friend every year since, the only person who's ever loved me without needing anything back for it.

She showed up twenty minutes later with two coffees and her laptop already open, like she'd started building a case in the car.

"Okay," she said, setting a cup in front of me. "Are you okay?"

"I'm better than okay," I said. "I'm clear."

She studied my face for a second, then nodded once, like that answer satisfied something in her. "Then let's get to work."

—

Julian showed up at nine that night. I opened the door because some old, tired part of me still expected an apology.

He didn't have one.

"Sloan, baby, I still love you," he said, and then, in the same breath, "Do you have any idea what you just cost this family? My mother is already making calls."

I looked at him. Really looked — at the wrinkled collar, the panic sitting behind his eyes where guilt should have been.

I didn't say a single word. I just closed the door. I heard him say my name once more through the wood, and then I slid the chain lock into place and walked back to the kitchen table like nothing had happened at all.

—

Palmer Ross arrived at Montgomery Enterprises the next morning in a cream suit and a smile that looked borrowed from a funeral home.

I was two steps behind her, unseen, when she let herself into my father's office like she owned the floor.

"Arthur," she said, settling into the chair across from him without being asked. "I think we need to talk about your daughter's little performance yesterday."

My father — Arthur Montgomery, the man who built this company out of one logistics office and a handshake — didn't move.

"It was quite a scene," Palmer went on, folding her hands. "Very public. Very messy. I do hope Sloan understands that Ross Capital doesn't have to remain invested in your expansion deal. It would be such a shame for something so avoidable to cost you thirty years of partnership."

"Are you threatening me, Palmer?" my father asked, quiet.

"I'm advising you," she said, smile never slipping. "A retraction. A quiet apology from Sloan. Handled correctly, before this gets any further out of hand."

I watched my father's face go pale in a way I had never seen it go pale before — not at board meetings, not at funerals. Pale like the ground had shifted under a house he'd spent his whole life building.

And standing there in that doorway, listening to a woman try to buy my silence like it was a line item, I understood something with total clarity.

I had spent six years being managed. Folded smaller. Kept quiet so someone else could take up the room.

That was over now.

I stepped inside.

"Palmer," I said. "You're going to want to say that part again. Slower. So I can make sure I understand exactly what you think you're offering me."
