Donatello tilted his head and smirked.
“ I wouldn't touch you even if I was paid to do so”.
Camilia fumed “Do you think this is a joke huh...you monster!!” she yelled gripping the collar of his shirt.
Donatello stood up instantly, he loosened Camilia’s grip and threw her to the ground.
“I see you’ve lost your train of thoughts. How is it my fault that you choose to drink yourself to stupor last night? I only pushed you, you are lucky I didn’t kill you”
Camilia winced, “Is he trying to say he doesn’t know I’m Camilia.” ‘No, I don’t trust this devil’ she thought to herself.
She got up and charged towards Donatello but came to a halt at the sound of the document hitting a side table by the couch.
“Sign it” Donatello said, his hands in his pocket.
Camilia glanced at the document then back at him with a glare.
“What sly game are you playing?” she said.
“Don’t you understand plain English?? Do I have to speak in Spanish… uhh senora?” Donatello whispered.
Camilia picked up the document, flipping through the pages she gagged.
“What is this?” she asked raising the folder above her head.
“Exactly what you think it is” Donatello said smiling.
But Camilia could see something else…disgust and danger all wrapped up in his ocean blue eyes. His raven black hair was well groomed to perfection just above those eyes. His well pointed nose and rosey lips stood out the most . He had the build of a warrior, the face of a god and the height of celebrity model, his intellect too was extremely sharp like that of Einstein.
No wonder he caught the attention of people everywhere he went, especially the attention of women and ladies, ‘But…’ she thought to herself, ‘…of what use is all these features if they were owned by a monster.’
Well guess is not entirely wasted, even the devil is said to be the most beautiful right?
“I am not marrying you.” She spat.
“Feisty… I see” Donatello replied, “If I recall correctly, you have been the one chasing after me all these years using the excuse that we are betrothed to make people know you have a sort of claim to me?... Hmmm. I am only doing this because of my parents.” He said.
Donatello stepped forward and stood in front of Camilia.
“Whats’s wrong Katherine? Don’t tell me you have changed your mind.” He frowned.
“No one is capable of loving someone like you, you are despicable.” Camilia said through gritted teeth.
“True true, I agree” Donatello said heading towards the open window, “…but I don’t need people to love me, I need people to fear me and bow at the mere mention of my name.”
Leaning on the wall, he turned and faced Camilia.
“After a year of our marriage we will get a divorce, you will get 25% of my wealth and leave my life for good. I never want to see your face ever again.”
“Rest assured, you won’t have to wait a year of marriage for that. You won’t see my face again cause I’m leaving now” she said tossing the contract on the table.
“I am not signing anything.”
Camilia wondered how Katherine had lived with a ruthless being like him. He did not even like Katherine.
“Are you trying to paint me as the villain here, make me lose face in front of my parents? Well… that’s not possible, you will sign it.”
Camilia was about to leave his room when Donatello called in two of his men.
“Raphael, Leo…”
Two hefty men entered the room and chorused “Yes Boss”
“Take her to her room and lock her up. Maybe that would knock some senses back into her.”
The two men bowed and held Katherine’s arms. Camilia kicked, fought and scratched but it was all to no avail as she was no match for the them.
“You monster… I hate you and I will never marry you.” She yelled as she was being dragged out of his room.
Donatello stared at the window laughing.
“We will see about that.” he said.
A ringing sound caught his attention and pulled him out of his thoughts. He picked up the call, bringing his phone close to his ear.
“WHAT?!?!?!” he yelled. His phone came crashing to the ground.
His breath caught , he gasped.
Donatello could not believe what he had just heard.
“This can’t happen to me; I won’t let it” Camilia declared pacing round the room.
She had spent days locked up in a cell by Anthony, she was not going to let that happen again.
“How dear you??Open this door!!!” she yelled, banging on the door, her tone intense.
“Please… I am not Katherine, you have the wrong person” she voiced.
Seeing they were not going to open the door, Camilia dragged her feet to the end of the bed. She sat on the soft fluffy rug, leaning her back on the bed stand. Her lips quivered, she bowed her head, wrapping her arms around her now slender body. Her long coffee brown hair covered her face and legs.
Camilia bit her bottom lips, sobbing as tears rolled down her slightly red cheeks. Katherine’s dove like eyes and healthy glamorous skin commanded attention wherever she went. Unfortunately, she ended up with a man who did not even care about her.
“What will I do?” Camilia murmured. “I can’t go back to Anthony and Rosita because they won’t believe me. They will think it’s just another plan by Donatello to bring them down unless I have proof.”
Camilia raised her head and wiped her tears with her palms. “Yes, proof, I have to get them proof that shows that I am Camilia , only then will they truly believe me.”
“Donatello definitely has a hand in this for all I know he has a hand in my framing.” Camilia frowned as she narrowed her eyes
“If marriage is what he wants, that’s what he’ll get” Camilia mouthed as she got up to her feet
“I’ll play the role of dear ol’Katherine and make sure I pull him down” Camilia fumed.
She walked to the door and knocked on it quietly “ I am ready to sign the contract, I will do anything he wants, just get me out of here”
Immediately a click sound was heard and the door knob turned. The door flung open, Camilia stepped backwards and in front of her stood Leo. Hid face calm and calculative. He bowed his head and stepped to the side.
Camilia scoffed and made her way to Donatello’s room.
Rapheal stood at the side of the door, his hands crossed and in them was a document.
“You can’t go in” Raphael said as Camilia was about to pull the door handle.
“Why??? I am here to sign the contract he so badly wants.” Camilia responded.
Raphael handed Camilia the marriage contract and a pen, “He ordered that no one be let in Miss”
Camilia clenched her fist, she snatched the contract and signed it, ‘K,’ after signing she gave it back to him.
Just as she was about to leave, she heard a loud crash, and a shattering sound from Donatello’s room.
“I hope that was the sound of him dying” she said smiling as she hummed away.
Pieces of broken glass was scattered on the ground. Sand and flowers from the ceramic flower pots littered everywhere, spilled wine and shattered bottles filled the whole space.
Donatello sat at a corner in the room, his legs were straight and pointed forward.
He turned his head to stare at a picture in his left hand. He swallowed hard, his chest tightened, breath quickened and his lips trembled. Donatello picked up a piece of glass from the floor with his right hand, he tightened the hand to form a fist.
He winced as the glass cut deep into his palm. Blood flowed from his hands to the floor.
“You will pay for this” Donatello said, his voice almost inaudible “I will strip you of everything you have until you are left with nothing. I will make you miserable and you will crawl to me begging for mercy.”
“Ohh, you look so beautiful my darling” Mrs. Elenora commented walking towards Camilia.
Camilia sat on a wooden chair, her coffee brown hair curled and styled in a bun with silver hairclips that glittered in the sunlight.
Her long and white lace floral gown spread out on the floor.
This was the second time Camilia wore a wedding dress but unlike the first , she was not glad about it.
“What’s the matter love?” Mrs. Elenora asked, staring at her daughter’s emotionless face.
“You know you can tell me anything Katherine, I am your mother… Don’t you like the dress?? Is that the problem?? ” she said fixing the sleeves of the off-shoulder gown.
Camilia smiled at Mrs. Elenora, she did not know what to tell her, how to tell her that she was not her daughter…she was not Katherine but someone else stuck in her body.
Mrs. Elenora exhaled deeply, she took another chair by the side and sat beside Camilia. “I know you Kat” she said taking Camilia’s hands into hers, “You have not been happy the whole of today, as a matter of fact for some months now. What happened to my lovely princess? The cheerful one that always light up the room. What happened to her?”
Camilia sobbed as tear drops fell down her face.
Camilia never got to know her mother. She was just 2 years old when her mother died shortly after giving birth to her sister. Ever since then, it had been her, her sister and her dad. Sadly, her father died some years ago in an accident.
One fateful day her and her dad were heading to a conference together, they were going by road as the place was at a drivable distance , a truck collided into their car and took his life. Luckily for her she was saved and rushed to the hospital by a stranger, a man. This man was who she later came to know as Anthony, that was how she met him and eventually fell in love with him over the years.
Hearing Mrs. Elenora’s voice , it reminded her of her father who did everything in his power to make his two girls happy.
“Talk to me” Mrs. Elenora said handing her a handkerchief.
“I am scared and I feel stuck… I am not supposed to be here. I really don’t know what to do and how to sort this out” Camilia lamented.
“Do whatever you want to, like I always say follow your heart” Mrs. Elenora smiled, “You two have been betrothed since you were seven and you have loved him deeply but if you are not sure about this, say the word… your father and I will do
anything for you”
Camilia could not quit now, she had to find evidence that linked her death to Donatello. Out of all the women in the world she came as his fiancée, definitely he had a role to play in this. She needed proof that she was actually Camilia and if
getting married to the devil was what she had to do, she would face it head on.
Camilia shook her head
“It’s noting, I will be fine’
“ Are you sure about that?” Mrs. Elenora asked.
“Yes” Camilia replied
“Well, if you feel like you want to talk or something is bothering you, you know where to find me” Mrs. Elenora said kissing Camilia’s forehead.
“We best hurry, you can’t be late to your own wedding”
Camilia chuckled, her face brightening up a bit.
Camilia’s heels clicked softly against the white carpet as she walked down the aisle.
Leading her was a man, he had grey hair and a great set of dentition that showed when he smiled, even in his fifties he had the body of a thirty-year-old.
Mr. Elenora smiled as he walked his daughter down the aisle, preparing to hand her over to Donatello. At the far end stood Donatello, his black suit tailored to perfection, a rose was tucked into his breast pocket and his hair neat and well-trimmed. Camilia’s heart skipped a beat, her face flustered, her cheeks bright red as she stared at the gorgeous figure in
front of her.
“Snap out of it Cam” she said to herself shaking her head as she tried to remove any unwanted thoughts of Donatello. “You
can’t get distracted… he’s just a jerk”
Donatello was in fact a jerk but a handsome one at that.
Camilia reached him and he offered his hand to her, his face blank . She rolled her eyes and scoffed as she took his hand.
“Dearly beloved, we have gathered here in the presence of God Almighty to witness the matrimonial union between these
two souls, Donatello Moreni and Katherine Elenora…” the priest began. Camilia tuned him out as she stared aimlessly into Donatello’s icy cold eyes.
‘I thought this was just going to be a court wedding” she thought to herself eyeing him, “ at least he still has a sense of responsibility”
“…as long as you both shall live” the priest paused. “Do you Donatello Moreni take Katherine Elenora to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“I do” Donatello declared but his expression said the complete opposite.
“And do you Katherine Eleonora take Donatello Moreni to be your lawfully wedded husband?’
Camilia hesitated, looking at the new faces around her. Katherine’s parents, relatives, and friends were all seated, smiles beaming on their faces. She was pulled out of her thoughts by a tight squeeze on her hand.
Donatello held Camilia’s hand firmly, squeezing it with all his might like he intended to crush it. Camilia winced in pain, she let out a low sigh.
“I do”
“We lay to rest today Mrs Camilia Armandez, a woman of strength, dignity and honour. May she have a peaceful departure and may her soul find comfort in the afterlife “. The priest declared.
Next to him was a wide hole that measured almost seven feet deep. He raised one hand above it and in the other, he held a Bible as he quoted departure scriptures and heart-throbbing statements.
Camilia leaned on a tree as she watched her former self being laid in the ground. Although she stood afar to avoid raising questions and causing a scene, she could clearly feel the tension and grief in the graveyard.
“I thought we were going to be together forever. How could you do this to me?? Why did you break the promise you made?” Rosita said sobbing uncontrollably. She went on her knees facing the grave “ After father left, I had no one to rely on except you…you are the only family I have. Please come back to me…I cannot live without you “ Rosita wept.
Camilia's heart bled at the sight of her weeping sister. The last time she saw Rosita in that situation was when their father died eight years ago. Camilia had been the one comforting her but now, Rosita was all alone.
“Please forgive me sis…I cannot be there this time around, I have my own battles to fight” She said, fighting back the tears.
Camilia looked around, searching for a little hope. Maybe his presence would relax her a bit.
She sighed…what was she even expecting
The mourners were few, just some distant relatives, Rosita's friends and a few socialites. Camilia had no close friends, she only spent time with Rosita and Anthony.
“ He did not even come. I thought our love was stronger than this!” Her heart stung, she cried covering her mouth with her hands in order not to make a noise.
A part of her was already dead and it wasn't coming back.
The service ended, they all said final prayers and threw roses into the grave and slowly they left. Camilia quickly covered her face with a black scarf as her mourners passed by.
“Imagine…all this time I actually admired her” One of the women scoffed.
“Me too”. Another replied.
“She always acted so angelic and perfect, she even rejected all our invites and friendship gestures…such pride!”
“What kind of a woman plots to kill her own husband? She really had us all fooled” .
“At least she got what she deserved, let's see how she would plot another attack in the grave”.
They all nodded as they walked away, their daughters echoing in Camilia's head.
Camilia swallowed hard, her legs nearly gave out. She wiped a tear from her eyes as she stared at her grave. She watched a maid help Rosita to her feet and gently guide her to a waiting car. The car drove off and Camilia was the only person left behind. She remained still for some minutes reminiscing her past life and time with her family.
As she was about walking towards the grave, she saw a bright light. She looked closer and realized it was the headlight of a car. Camilia's breath caught, her chest tightened. She quickly hid herself behind the tree as a black Mercedes rolled into the graveyard.
“Anthony” She mumured, a smile came across her face.
She peeked through the low branches of the tree as the car door opened. A tall man wearing a black suit stepped out, his hair was styled backwards and he held a bouquet of flowers. Together with one of his men, he walked towards Camilia's grave.
Camilia's smile withered and it turned into a frown
“Donatello?” she spat. “ What is that bastard doing here?”.
Donatello squared, he placed the bouquet of lilies gently on the mound of dirt and ran his hand across the headstone that read
‘Camilia Armandez, forever in our hearts’ .
Camilia couldn't quite make out his expression as he faced the grave and could only see his back. She stretched her body, holding one of the tree branches tightly. The fragile branch snapped due to Camilia's weight on it.
She quickly hid at the back of the tree. She squatted hoping Donatello didn't hear the sound. Camilia sat there for a while and when she was sure that she would not get caught, she stood up and turned to the grave.
Camilia was stunned to realize it was empty.
“Where did he go?” She thought to herself.
Immediately, someone grabbed her hand and forcefully pinned her to the tree.
“You!” he said, his cold eyes piercing through her soul.
He held her neck firmly “ what are you doing here?”
“I should be the one asking the question” Camilia said as she struggled to remove Donatello's hand from her neck, her lungs begging for air.
“You made a big mistake coming here. Does not matter how much you try to hide it…I know who you are!” He smirked but his grip only grew tighter.
Camilia felt all her strength leaving her body.
“Is this it? Is this really how it all ends?” She asked herself as her life began to slip away.
