Chapter 2

Maya POV

I spent the morning scouring my skin until it turned raw. I tried to scrub the scent of him from my pores. I packed away the photos on the mantle, turning their faces to the wall.

Every item that even faintly smelled like him felt like poison.

I hid the evidence in a cloud drive, encrypted with a password Liam would never guess.

Suddenly, the front door opened.

Liam walked in, holding a bouquet of Moonflowers. My favorites.

"Hey, beautiful," he said, flashing that smile. The smile that used to make me melt. Now, it just looked like a mask painted over a rotting skull.

He moved to hug me. My body went rigid instinctively. I stepped back.

He paused, confused, his arms falling to his sides. "Everything okay?"

"I'm just... tired," I lied, forcing a weak smile. "Pack business."

"You work too hard," he crooned. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek black credit card. "Here. Go buy yourself something nice. You deserve it, my Luna."

A black card.

He was buying my silence before I had even spoken. He was paying penance for his guilt.

"Thanks," I said, my voice flat.

His eyes flickered with annoyance-just for a second-before the mask slipped back into place. "I have to head out. Emergency border patrol. I might be late."

"Of course," I said. "Go."

He leaned in and kissed my cheek. I wanted to scrub the skin off with steel wool the moment he pulled away.

He left. I watched from the window as his car disappeared down the drive. He wasn't going to the border. He was going to her.

My stomach churned again. It wasn't just disgust. It was a physical sickness that had been plaguing me for days.

A delivery drone buzzed at the window, startling me. I opened the latch and retrieved a small package. No return address.

Inside was a velvet box. I flipped the lid.

An engagement necklace.

It was old silver, heavy and ornate, bearing the Goldstein family crest. It was the necklace the Alpha gave to his true chosen mate. I had never received one. Liam had always claimed it was "lost."

Underneath it was a printed photo of an ultrasound. A red circle was drawn explicitly around the fetal heartbeat.

And a note, handwritten in elegant script:

Liam says this is his 'transition' gift to you. You don't matter anymore, Maya. He loves me. And our child.

The room spun violently.

I looked at the necklace. I looked at the note.

My hand went to my stomach. The nausea. The fatigue. The missed cycle I had ignored because of stress.

I ran to the bathroom again, heaving. I dug through the cabinet for a pregnancy test I had bought months ago, hoping for a surprise back then.

I sat on the cold tile floor, waiting.

Three minutes felt like three centuries.

I flipped the stick over.

Two pink lines.

Pregnant.

I was pregnant with the child of a man who was planning to replace me.

The world tilted on its axis. I wasn't just losing a husband. I was bringing a life into a war zone.

Chapter 3

Maya POV:

I stared at the two pink lines until they blurred into a smudge of condemning color.

My wolf whined, a low, mournful sound vibrating against my ribs. She wanted to be happy. A pup was a blessing. But under this roof, with this Alpha? It was a sentence.

He cannot know, I told her, my mental voice sharp with panic. He will use this. He will take the pup and give it to Ava to raise.

The thought made me nauseous.

I dressed quickly, pulling on oversized sweats and a hoodie to hide a figure that hadn't even changed yet. I slipped out the back entrance of the pack house, avoiding the guards. I needed air. I needed to think.

I ended up at a small coffee shop on the edge of our territory. It was a neutral zone, quiet, a place where I used to feel human.

I sat in the back, nursing a herbal tea that had long since gone cold. Then, I heard a voice that made my blood freeze.

"Alpha, are you sure about this?"

It was Marc. Liam's Beta.

I sank lower in my seat, pulling my hood further down. They were in a booth behind a decorative partition, close enough that I could hear the leather creak as Liam shifted.

"Ava is pushing for the announcement," Liam's voice replied. It was cold, detached, purely business-like. "She wants the Luna ceremony before the pup shows too much."

My hand flew to my mouth to stifle a gasp.

"And Maya?" Marc asked, hesitation heavy in his tone. "She's your fated mate, Liam. The pack loves her."

"Maya is... convenient," Liam said. I heard the clink of a cup hitting a saucer. "She's a good administrator. But she's boring, Marc. She has no fire. No ambition. Ava brings connections. Ava brings an alliance. And she's giving me an heir."

"What will you do with Maya?"

"I'll set her up in a nice house somewhere. Keep her as a mistress, maybe. She's domestic. Or just let her fade away. She's too weak to fight back. She'll accept whatever I give her."

Too weak.

Tears pricked my eyes, but they were hot, angry tears now.

"Besides," Liam laughed, a cruel sound that scraped against my nerves. "The Luna position requires strength. It requires a queen. Maya is just a library mouse."

I put my hand over my flat stomach, protectively. We are not weak, I thought. And we will not be your spare parts.

I waited for them to leave, counting the seconds until the bell above the door chimed. Then I pulled out my phone and messaged the contact from the Phoenix Initiative.

Me: I'm pregnant. Can I still sever the bond?

The reply was instant, as if they were waiting for me to break.

Phoenix: It is dangerous. The pain will be doubled. The child will survive, but the connection to the father will be destroyed. He will not sense the child. He will not feel you.

Me: Good. Do it.

Phoenix: We need you to initiate the Rejection publicly. It weakens his claim. Then we extract you.

I walked back to the pack house. My legs felt heavy, but my spine was steel. Every step was a promise.

That night, Liam came home late. He smelled of expensive perfume, stale whiskey, and sex.

"Hey," he said, loosening his tie as he walked into the bedroom. "Missed you."

The lie hung in the air, thick and suffocating.

"Did you?" I asked, not looking up from my book.

"Of course." He sat on the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight. "You look pale."

"Just a bug."

He didn't touch me. He didn't check my temperature. Instead, he picked up his phone-the secret one-and typed a message.

Ava: She suspects nothing. Soon, my queen.

I closed my eyes, feigning sleep so he wouldn't see the hatred burning in them.

Soon, I agreed silently. Soon you will lose everything.

Chapter 4

Maya POV

The Annual Pack Gala.

The entire Silver Claw Pack was gathered in the grand hall. Crystal chandeliers dripped light from the vaulted ceiling, and the air grew heavy with the rich scent of roasted meat and expensive wine.

I wore white. A simple, elegant gown that skimmed the floor. I stood beside Liam, playing the part of the dutiful Luna to perfection.

The event was being live-streamed to the entire werewolf network. Thousands of eyes were watching.

Liam took the microphone. He looked handsome, powerful. The perfect Alpha.

"Tonight is a night of celebration!" he announced, his voice booming. "We celebrate our strength. Our future."

He paused, looking out at the crowd with a practiced smile.

"And tonight, I have a special guest. Someone who represents the future of this pack."

My heart stopped. No. He wouldn't. Not here. Not like this.

The doors opened.

Ava Sinclair walked in.

She wore a dress the color of fresh blood. It was tight, deliberately sculpted to show off the slight, undeniable curve of a pregnancy bump.

And around her neck, glittering obscenely under the lights, was the Goldstein engagement necklace.

A gasp went through the room.

Liam stepped down from the stage and took her hand. He led her up the stairs like royalty. He didn't even look at me.

"Ava," he said into the mic, his voice thick with emotion. "My queen. You carry the future of the Silver Claw."

He turned to the camera. "I am announcing that Ava Sinclair will be taking a prominent role in our leadership."

It was a soft launch. A public humiliation.

I stood there, frozen. I felt the eyes of the pack on me. Pity. Scorn. Confusion.

Marc stepped towards me, grabbing my arm urgently. "Luna, come with me. Let's go backstage."

"No," I whispered.

I yanked my arm away. The movement caught Liam's attention.

"Maya, don't make a scene," he Mind-Linked me. His voice was cold in my head. "Go to your room."

I looked at Ava. She was smirking. She touched the necklace, fingering the diamond that was supposed to be mine.

My wolf roared. It wasn't a sound of pain anymore. It was rage.

I stepped forward. I grabbed the necklace around Ava's neck.

"This," I said, my voice shaking, "does not belong to you."

I pulled. The chain snapped.

Ava shrieked. "Liam!"

Liam moved faster than I could react. His hand lashed out.

Smack.

The sound echoed through the silent hall like a gunshot.

The force of the blow knocked me to the ground. I tasted copper. Blood trickled from my lip.

The room went deathly silent. An Alpha hitting his Luna. It was forbidden. It was barbaric.

Liam stood over me, his chest heaving. He looked at his hand, then at me. But there was no regret. Only anger that I had ruined his moment.

"Get her out of here," he snarled to the guards.

He turned back to Ava, checking her neck. "Are you okay, my love?"

I sat on the floor, wiping the blood from my mouth. I looked up. The camera was still rolling. The red light was blinking, capturing every second of his cruelty.

I stood up. My legs shook, but I forced them to hold me.

I looked directly into the camera lens.

"Liam Goldstein," I said. My voice was quiet, but in the silence, it carried like thunder.

"You have tainted our bond. You have betrayed your vows."

Liam turned, his eyes narrowing. "Maya, shut up."

I reached into my mind, finding the thick, golden cord that connected our souls. It was rotting, black and oozing.

"I will sever the link," I said, quoting the warning I gave him years ago. "You will never smell me again. It will be as if I never existed."

I turned and walked out.
