In the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a sudden power outage occurred.
As the doctor on night duty, I remained calm and didn't panic, nor did I call for help.
I calmly waited as the temperatures of the incubators where the babies lay slowly dropped...
In my previous life, when the pediatric department lost power, I immediately switched to the backup power sources to ensure the children's safety.
After doing everything I was supposed to do, I sat down to take a breather and took a sip of water.
Suddenly, my coworkers rushed in, waking me up.
"Dr. Luther, you're a healthcare staff, how could you kill those children?!"
"You froze them to death! How vicious! You'll pay for this!"
Only then did I realize that all the children had died, without exception.
The police took me away. They said I was the only one in the room and they found my fingerprints on the thermostat.
My son then produced a video to assist in the investigation. "She often complained about the patients being a bother and hoped they would all die."
Enraged family members cornered me in an alley and tortured me for ten hours until I died.
But until my last breath, I couldn't understand how the children could have frozen to death in a thermostatically-controlled environment.
And why did my own son provide a fake video to frame me?
Suddenly, I jolted awake. I found myself waking up on the day of the power outage.
The cold air from the air conditioner jolted me awake.
"Mom, the power's out! What do we do? I don't know how to fix it!"
My son, Shawn Giddey, asked anxiously.
I calmly turned on the flashlight on my phone.
Shawn had just graduated from medical school and was interning at the hospital where I worked.
In my previous life, when the power went out, he went to report to the hospital higher-ups, and I stayed behind to connect to the backup power.
But even after I got into trouble, he never came back.
"Mom!" When he saw that I wasn't moving, he stomped his feet anxiously.
"Why are you just sitting there? If the kids die, we're done for!"
Clearly, he understood the gravity of the situation. Then why didn't he come back in my previous life?
Several babies sensed the change in temperature and started to wail.
The children on ventilators began to turn pale, their lips turning blue.
Although my heart ached, I knew that nothing would happen in the short term, so I feigned indifference.
Shawn became even more agitated. He yelled at me, "You're the head of pediatrics, how can you be so cold-blooded?!"
If it were before, I would have gone to check the children's conditions and argued back.
But having gone through the experiences of my previous life, my mindset had long changed.
After I calmed down, I noticed that, although he looked anxious on the surface, there was a hint of cunning and triumph in his eyes.
Could he really be involved in setting me up?
I shrugged and replied nonchalantly, "What do you want me to do? There are over 100 children here. Do you want me to push the incubators out one by one?"
Shawn looked unhappy, and his tone grew more impatient.
"You're the head of pediatrics, who will save them if you don't? You can't just watch them die!"
I helplessly pointed to the crying children, raised my eyebrows, and looked at him.
"It would take a long time to push all those children out. Maybe after we saved a few, the rest would be dead. Tell me, who should I save first and who should I save last? Rather than being caught in that dilemma, I might as well let all of them die, then wait for the parents to beat me to death."
Before he could react, I pulled him down to sit with me and showed him a calm smile.
"At least I get to die with my son."
Shawn stood up and shook off my hand violently.
"You're insane. I can't believe you want me to die with you. You don't deserve to be my mother!"
With that, he ran away so fast it was as if a ghost was chasing him.
As I watched him open the door and run away in panic, a chill spread throughout my body.
I had loved him for over twenty years, but he abandoned me to escape by himself, yet he had the gall to say that I did not deserve to be his mother.
More and more children started crying. Their cries grew louder and louder, engulfing the ICU like a flood.
Yet, I merely stared at the tightly shut door while smiling serenely.
The power outage lasted a long time, so long that I thought the hospital had forgotten about us.
At about seven o'clock in the morning, the visiting parents were already waiting outside.
They saw the darkness inside through the visiting window and shouted anxiously.
"What's going on? It's always bright when we come to see the kids, why is it so dark today? Is there a power outage?"
"Don't scare me. Are the kids okay? I had the baby through IVF. I'd die if anything happened to him!"
"Why don't we break down the door and push the children out along with the incubators? There's electricity outside, maybe they can survive if we push them out!"
The parents were frantic, and they all agreed to this suggestion.
Just as they were about to break the door down, I opened it from the inside.
"Dr. Luther, there you are. Thank goodness. With you here, we feel much better."
"That's right. I told you not to do anything rash. Dr. Luther is a very responsible doctor. We can entrust our children to her."
"Dr. Luther, can we go in to see the children now? It's been a week, I want to see how he's doing..."
Several parents' eyes turned teary. Nearly all the children who were sent here were facing life-threatening situations.
The weekly visiting day had become the parents' only hope.
I was about to say something when a person squeezed out of the crowd and pointed at me accusingly.
"Even though you're my mother, I'm not gonna defend you today. What kind of evil doctor are you, watching the patients freeze to death during a power outage?! You said you would wait for all of them to die and drag me down with you. Not only are you letting me down, you're also letting down the white coat you're wearing!"
Shawn glared at me as if he were looking at a sworn enemy, determined not to let me get away with what I did..
He was my son. With him accusing me, the parents instantly exploded with emotion.
Some mothers couldn't bear the shock; their legs weakened, and they collapsed to the floor and wailed.
The fathers clenched their fists, trying to restrain themselves. They looked like they wanted to beat me to death on the spot.
Some who were quick to react had already run past me and were smashing the PICU door, hoping to rush in to save their children.
But it was an airtight steel door, and no one but me could open it.
Right then, I saw a figure join the crowd.
It was my husband, Ian Giddey.
Good. He was finally here.
In my previous life, if I hadn't drunk the tea he prepared for me, I wouldn't have slept so soundly, and the children wouldn't have died so mysteriously.
All the things I couldn't understand before had become clues now.
Since they wouldn’t let me off the hook, I might as well escalate the situation further.
I crossed my arms and said in an extremely indifferent tone, "There are over 100 children in the PICU. Who should I have saved first and who should I have saved last? I'm not a superwoman. I can't push all the children out at once. Since I can't push them all out, the children who are left behind will die. Which of you is willing to have your own child left behind?"
This was actually what I wanted to say in my previous life.
Back then, I used all my strength to connect all the backup power supplies. Each power supply weighed dozens of pounds. After I was done, I collapsed on the chair, completely exhausted.
But when I saw the children breathing steadily and sleeping peacefully, I felt that it was all worth it.
However, when I woke up, everyone was blaming me for freezing the children to death.
Even the parents who had always trusted me wouldn't listen to my explanation.
They dragged me into an alley, then beat me up and yelled at me for ten hours until I died.
As a doctor, I never expected gratitude, but since they wouldn’t believe me anyway, I couldn't be bothered explaining.
Hearing what I said, the parents could no longer remain calm.
Their faces flushed red, they approached me slowly with the same momentum as when they beat me to death in my previous life.
Ian felt that the time was ripe. He stepped forward and slapped me.
"Joyce, you're the head of pediatrics. How could you do such a thing? Shawn exposed you even though he's your son, yet you still argue that you did nothing wrong? Aren’t you afraid the children will come back as vengeful spirits to haunt you? None of the parents want their children to be harmed, but if you had saved a few, at least it showed that you tried! But now, look at you with your indifferent attitude. Where has your conscience gone?"
The way he and Shawn glared at me was exactly the same. I held my face and remained silent, quietly watching what other tricks they had up their sleeves.
After Ian finished speaking, he gave Shawn a look and motioned for him to play the video on his phone.
In the video, I looked like a madwoman, roaring, complaining, and cursing.
"There are so many sick children every day. I'm so tired that my body hurts!"
"These premature and severely-ill children don't deserve to live! They're wasting medical resources and should just be euthanized!"
"They keep crying and crying, it's so annoying. I'll kill them all sooner or later!"
After Shawn posted this video on social media in my previous life, the parents were so enraged that they lost their rationality.
They used sticks, iron bars, and stones to torture me for ten hours until I drew my last breath!
Thinking of this, I trembled with anger and looked up at the Giddey family.
Ian couldn't mask the smile in his eyes, though he maintained a facade of righteousness.
"Joyce, we've been married for 25 years, but I've never realized you were such a cold-blooded woman! The entire hospital was fine, only the PICU where you're on duty had a power outage for several hours. If you didn't do it, who did?"
Shawn played along. "I'm ashamed to have a mother like you! You caused over 100 deaths! You deserve to be tortured to death!"
They incited the parents' emotions, and the parents all turned red-eyed, like man-eating wolves.
"You monster! I thought of you as my child's savior! Are you even human? How could you do this to the young children?"
"You're simply a devil! I was 40 years old when I had this child. You've ruined our family!"
"We heard that you're a better doctor than the ones in our city, so we traveled hundreds of miles to send our daughter here, but you killed her. I'm going to kill you!"
The parents who were smashing the door also turned around and advanced on me fiercely.
Right then, a stern shout was heard.
"Stop!"
