Chapter 2

I hurried to the hospital ward.

Mother's face was pale. She wasn't happy to see me coming alone.

She held my hand and said, "If I'm gone, you must take good care of them. They are your only family in this world..."

My heart ached again. I knew my mother was afraid that I would argue with my wife because of this.

"Oh, by the way, there is a small hidden compartment in the wardrobe at home. You know about it. I have some savings and some things left for you, all in there..."

Mother's words were like a final testament.

I quickly asked her to rest and not think too much. "Mom, don't say so much. You will live a long life. Mom, please don't talk. Let me tell you the story that you love most. I specifically learned the tone from the professional teacher. I will definitely tell it well this time."

"Okay... okay..."

With her eyes closed, my mother still tightly held my hand.

I could feel her trembling, and a tear slid down her cheek.

While I was telling the story, I felt her hand gradually loosened.

"Mom? Mom!

"Wake up!

"Doctor!"

My mother had entered eternal sleep and would never wake up again.

I completely broke down.

I had never shed so many tears in my life.

The doctors hurriedly came and advised me to grieve.

But at this moment, I saw Hazel's ex-boyfriend, Terry Watson's Instagram profile, [In this world, everything is changing rapidly, and any feelings can be broken at any time, only the purity between her and me will not change!]

The picture showed Hazel cleaning up the messy bedroom for him, and Hazel smiling gently at the camera.

There were many people who liked it below.

I couldn't help but comment below, [It's nice].

Seeing my comment, Terry immediately replied, [Eugene, don't misunderstand, I just can't breathe because of the pain in the wound. I can't do housework, so I asked her for help.]

I didn't look anymore.

I was busy dealing with my mother's affairs in the hospital.

Not long after, Hazel called me. "Eugene, I will bring Lucas to see our mother later."

How ironic her words are.

My mother has passed away.

"No need," I said lightly.

Hazel thought I was angry and impatiently said, "Are you jealous again?

"I've explained it to you countless times. Terry shielded me from a knife attack. If it weren't for him, I would have lost my life!

"Are you really getting angry over such a small matter?

"Can't you show a little understanding?"

I'd heard this before. "Got it."

I didn't feel like saying another word, so I hung up the phone.

In the past, I never hung up her calls. I always waited for her to hang up first.

But now, I thought it was good to hang up the phone.

It seemed like there wasn't much to say to her anymore.

Chapter 3

I hung up the phone, which seemed to make Hazel uncomfortable. She called again and said, "Can you stop messing around?"

I didn't reply. I was ready to hang up the phone again.

"You're tough, I'll bring Lucas to visit our mom right away, okay?" Hazel said angrily and then hung up the phone.

"Ha ha," I laughed.

How funny.

How ironic.

Do you want to come and see my mother's body?

Yes, for so many years, Hazel had been using these excuses.

At first, I sometimes thought it made sense, after all, her ex saved her life.

And at that time, Terry's contact with Hazel was not much. They just occasionally greeted each other, and we gathered a few times a year.

But everything changed since Terry got divorced.

Their contact became frequent and somewhat different.

It seemed like they were as intimate as a couple in love.

As long as Terry called, Hazel would drop everything to accommodate him.

I remembered the year my mother had just been discharged from the hospital.

After I took her home, she missed Hazel and her grandson very much, and asked me to call Hazel and Lucas to come back to the village together.

I begged Hazel for a long time, and she reluctantly agreed.

My mother was extremely happy about this and got up early in the morning, dragging her weak body that had just recovered from a serious illness to help me.

I told her to rest and said that I could handle it.

But my mother smiled and said, "My grandson will be back soon. He likes the dishes I cook. I have to show off my cooking skills and not let my grandson down."

Seeing my mother happy, I also smiled with relief.

We prepared a table full of delicious food.

We waited a long time. Hazel and Lucas didn't appear until all the food was cold.

I called Hazel again, feeling angry. I wanted to ask her loudly why she stood us up. But her phone was turned off the whole day.

Later, I found out that she was with her ex-boyfriend.

She even justified herself and said, "He got stabbed for me, so I have to take responsibility for him!"

Chapter 4

I finished dealing with all the matters at the hospital, called the car and prepared to take my mother's body home, but she still didn't show up.

Sure enough, it was the same as always.

I secretly laughed at myself. I shouldn't have any expectations or illusions.

Even if she comes now, what can she do?

What she faces is nothing but my mother's cold body, what else can she do?

Cry a few times?

She was unfilial while my mom was alive, but cries when she is dead.Who would care?

Is it meaningful?

I silently lit a cigarette.

My weak heart still held a glimmer of hope.

The driver of the hearse urged me, "Gene, it's time to go."

"Sure." I got on the car.

Back in the village, I knelt down to my mom and started arranging my mother's funeral.

I was the only child of my mother, so I had to handle everything on my own. I was busy with all kinds of trivial matters and felt overwhelmed.

Hazel called and got angry, saying, "Eugene, where are you guys?"

"I have already taken my mother home," I said calmly.

"Eugene, are you playing me?" Instead of apologizing for her repeated lateness, Hazel began to blame me.

I said weakly, "I didn't play you. My mother really needs to go home."

Hazel was very unhappy and scolded me on the phone, "In the morning, you were the one who said mom wanted to see her grandson and asked me to come with Lucas. You kept urging me on the phone one by one. Now that I'm here, you're gone!

"Even if there's an emergency and you need to leave the hospital in a hurry, can't you wait for me a little longer?

"Terry wanted me to stay and have dinner with him, but I refused. But you..."

When I heard her mention her ex's name, I hung up the phone directly.

I didn't know when it started.

All of this seemed to be taken for granted by her.

Just like last year, when my mother had her 70th birthday, we planned to have a simple gathering with our family because my mother was not in good health. We were all happy as a family.

But when it was time to eat, because of a phone call from Terry, Hazel immediately asked me to drive her back to the city to meet Terry.

She didn't think it was strange at all, and even thought it was natural.

I got angry with her.

But she didn't care and said, "We can celebrate birthday every year, do you really need to make such a fuss?"

She left in a taxi with a displeased look on her face.

But when it was Terry's 31st birthday, she acted like Terry's own parents, helping him clean the house, decorating the venue, and helping with buying groceries and cooking, without any complaints.

I argued with her again, "Who do you think you are to him? Do you really need to be so involved?"

With a joyful expression on her face, she said, "Come on, don't be jealous. Terry rarely celebrates his birthday. It's a rare and festive day today. Don't spoil the mood. Next time it's your birthday, I'll make it up to you, okay?"
