It rained heavily on the day of my discharge. I was soaked through when I returned to Quest Villa.
As soon as Zac saw me, he covered his nose in disgust. "You reek!"
The summer rain had a muddy smell, but it was not unpleasant. He was saying that just to make Winona smile.
Sure enough, his exaggerated performance made Winona, who was wearing my pajamas, cover her mouth and chuckle softly. Her eyes were brimming with pride and provocation as she looked at me.
I simply ignored her and turned around to go upstairs.
Sterling hurried out of the kitchen, frowning and looking at me with disgust. "Winona put aside work today to spend time with Zac. It's one thing that you're not grateful, but who are you showing that attitude to?"
I stood on the steps, my gaze indifferent. "Yeah, that's why I'm letting her have you. Let's get divorced."
My voice was soft but clear.
A trace of disdain flashed in Sterling's eyes. "Sienna, where did you learn this bad habit? You're always threatening to divorce. Do you think you can threaten me?"
Winona also stood up, speaking in a coquettish voice as she advised me, but she was actually fanning the flames. "Sienna, don't get me wrong. Sterling and I may be childhood sweethearts, but he's a good husband who puts his family first. You should cherish him. How can you threaten him with divorce at every turn?"
Sure enough, Sterling's eyes showed even more disgust toward me after she finished speaking.
I nodded nonchalantly. "You're right, so you can have this man. Cherish him."
After saying that, I turned around and went upstairs, ignoring the secretly delighted Winona and the gloomy-looking Sterling behind me.
I packed everything that belonged to me in the bedroom into the suitcase and put the signed divorce agreement and the mother-son disownment letter on the dressing table. Finally, I took off the wedding ring on my ring finger.
Sterling did not catch up with me. He thought that I was just throwing a tantrum, so he went into the kitchen to continue cooking. He was not good at cooking, but he could learn patiently for Winona.
As for me, he had only ever fed me a bowl of cold oatmeal in the six years of our marriage. He had even bought it from a shop outside.
Winona posted a photo of the table full of delicious food and Sterling's busy figure on social media.
The caption wrote: [There'll always be someone who remembers what your favorite food is.]
Just one minute after the photo was posted, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law eagerly liked it.
My mother-in-law even commented: [Winona's lovable, unlike the woman who married into the family with great effort but is still annoying after six years.]
My sister-in-law also chimed in: [I'll just say it straight. Please marry my brother. His current wife is just not good enough!]
I casually liked the post, but it disappeared when I refreshed the feed again. I did not bother with it and went downstairs with my suitcase.
Seeing me carrying my suitcase, Sterling scolded me coldly, "Winona's social media post was a joke. Do you have to make a fuss?"
Winona's eyes were also red as she gave a crocodile-tear apology. "Sienna, I didn't know you would get jealous. If I had known, I wouldn't have come here today and pissed you off..."
I looked at Sterling calmly and said indifferently, "I've put the divorce agreement on the dresser. See you at the courthouse tomorrow morning."
While we were talking, the cab arrived. I turned around to leave.
Sterling was about to say something, but Zac stopped him. "Let her go!"
He seemed to hate me to the core, his expression showing his disgust for me. He spat at me, pulled off the good luck charm that I spent a lot of effort getting, and threw it at me. "Get lost! Ms. White will be my new mother from now on."
"Okay." I threw the charm into the trash can at the gate, opened the car door, and got in. "Let's go, sir."
The car drove away, leaving Quest Villa far behind.
The reason why the Quest family had always looked down on me was my poor background.
To graduate from university, I worked part-time at Quest Villa as a caretaker, taking care of Sterling's seriously ill grandfather, Henry.
Henry was an antique enthusiast and a renowned archaeologist. Henry and I got along very well because our majors were related. He even wanted to adopt me as his goddaughter and cover all my university tuition fees.
Sterling had just been dumped by Winona at the time. He spent his days racing and drinking heavily, living a muddled life.
I originally had no contact with him because he did not often come home. Even though he and I were studying at the same university, he never knew me. He only went back to visit Henry during the holidays.
It was not until Winona got engaged abroad that he got dead drunk again. I got pregnant with Zac because of his drunken episode. Sterling was nearly beaten to death by Henry after that day.
My marriage to Sterling was also arranged before Henry's death. No matter how Sterling's mother resisted, it was useless.
I was secretly happy when I learned that I was going to marry Sterling. I had been secretly in love with him since I started university. However, Sterling and I slept in separate rooms after our marriage. We just slept together several times a month like it was a task.
Only when something happened with Winona would Sterling drunkenly break into my bedroom and want me passionately.
I got pregnant with our second child on the day of Winona's wedding, but she unexpectedly ran away that night.
At the wedding, she cried and said that her wilfulness had cost her the man she loved the most. She said she had come to her senses and had to return to find him. Thus, she flew back to the country.
When Sterling learned the news, he ran to the airport, ignoring me, who was bruised and battered in bed.
After Winona returned, she gradually took over my marriage and family until my husband and son became her most loyal fans.
The car came to a halt at the staff dormitory building of the museum.
I carried my suitcase upstairs and opened the single apartment that my boss, Alex Darmon, had reserved for me. Before I could even unpack, I received a call from Alex.
"Sienna, there's a mission from above. A large tomb has been discovered in the Patagonian Desert. They need urgent restoration of cultural relics. I booked a flight for tomorrow for you. Hurry up and pack your luggage! This mission is important. Don't worry, I'll go with you to apologize to Mr. Quest when you come back..."
"No need, Mr. Darmon. I'm planning to get divorced. I'll focus on the restoration of cultural relics from now on," I replied softly.
Sterling had never liked me devoting myself entirely to the restoration of cultural relics. He did not have any respect for the work and said that it would prevent me from concentrating on taking care of Zac. I cared about him and Zac, so I always rejected business trips that Alex arranged.
Only now did I understand that the only ones who would never betray me were those seemingly cold cultural relics in the museum.
When Alex heard me say that, he let out a sigh of relief, though his tone was tinged with regret. "Oh... Sienna, it's good that you've figured it out. You're brilliant. To be honest, we all think Sterling doesn't deserve you!"
A warm current flowed through my heart. Over the years, Alex had always treated me like his own daughter.
I smiled with relief. "Yeah, I think so too."
This night's sleep was the most peaceful one I had had in recent years. I did not need to prepare supper for Sterling, who got off work, nor tuck in Zac, who always had nightmares.
I slept till dawn. I washed up and dragged my luggage to the courthouse. However, Sterling did not show up after I waited for three hours. I called him more than a dozen times, but he never answered.
The boarding time was getting closer and closer, so I could only leave first.
After checking in, a gossip article popped up on the news interface before I turned off my phone.
[The president of Quest Group announces his investment in a movie based on the award-winning screenwriter, Ms. Winona White.]
[Childhood sweethearts are indeed invincible.]
'Is Sterling finally going to support Winona directly?' I thought as I sneered. I exited the news interface and switched off my phone.
Looking at the scenery outside the window getting smaller and smaller, I felt calm. No matter what happened to them, it had nothing to do with me.
Putting on the eye mask, I fell asleep until a violent turbulence woke me up.
The passengers around me were in a panic. I did not even have time to figure out what had happened. The next second, the plane suddenly lost altitude, and my head unexpectedly hit the luggage rack.
...
In the office of the president of Quest Group, Sterling had just finished the meeting specially held regarding Winona's script when he found more than a dozen calls from Sienna on his phone. He had set it to silent mode.
His business partner joked, "Mrs. Quest is still as clingy as ever. I envy you."
However, Sterling sneered, "She's asking for forgiveness. I have to ignore her so that she knows not to take advantage of others..."
He was interrupted by an unfamiliar call. "Hello, is this Mr. Quest, the husband of Ms. Sienna Summer? The flight that Ms. Summer took at 11:00 am unfortunately crashed due to a mechanical failure..."
